TL;DR
Acura TSX
The Acura TSX is frequently recommended as an affordable yet enjoyable car. The 2004+ models, especially with a manual transmission, are praised for their handling and performance potential when paired with modifications like coilovers and good tires [1:6]. The TSX is also noted for its reliability, which makes it a great first car option
[2:1]. It offers a good mix of luxury and sportiness at a reasonable price point.
Acura Integra
The Acura Integra is celebrated for its reliability and strong aftermarket support, making it a popular choice for those looking to modify their vehicles [1:4]. It's often mentioned as one of the most reliable Acura models
[4:1], with some owners reporting high mileage without significant issues
[4:3].
Acura RSX
The RSX is another model that comes up in discussions about affordable Acuras. It has a fair amount of aftermarket support, making it suitable for enthusiasts looking to customize their ride [1:5]. Like the Integra, it's a solid choice for those interested in both performance and modification potential.
Acura TL
While the Acura TL is often compared to the Honda Accord due to mechanical similarities, it offers additional features like all-wheel drive and a more powerful engine [5:2]. However, it may come with higher maintenance costs and fuel expenses due to its larger engine and premium fuel requirements
[5:2]. Despite these drawbacks, some users prefer the TL for its luxury feel and driving experience
[5:1].
Considerations for First-Time Buyers
For those new to car ownership, focusing on reliability and ease of maintenance is key. Models like the TSX and RSX offer a good balance of performance and dependability, making them excellent choices for first-time buyers [2:2]. Additionally, the availability of parts and the community support for these models can make ownership more manageable.
I’m a new car lover with a passion to find a project car that’ll be worth the time and money to learn on. I’m on a $5k starting budget (not including parts) and would love to start out with an Acura. What’s the best year and model Acura I can modify easily on this budget?
What's your goal, to make power or to make a clean looking car?
If you're trying to make power you'll want to start with something like a GS-R or RSX Type-S. But at $5k you're getting pretty much just the car. You can find a base model easily but to make decent power you're going to need to shell out cash for a motor swap and around $2k in parts and (shop)labor. Also swaps require tuning which is expensive if youre dyno tuning. E-Tunes from reputable people are pretty cheap, usually around $250-300.
You can find a nice condition base model, you could easily get a set of springs, repo rims, and buff the headlights out to make a clean car worth showing off.
The first $5k is just the car. Parts’ll come later with extra cash. I’m looking for a mix of both. I want a car sexy enough to put a smile on my face when I look out the window and with enough power to put a smile on my face when I start the engine
A 6-speed TL would scratch that itch pretty well. 8th or 9th gen Accord coupe would be a good platform. They dont look great out the box but with wheels and aesthetic mods they pop pretty hard.
The 6-6 Accord coupe would also be a better platform to mod because they have 3.55 final drive while being open to the same mods the TL has.
Not quite an acura but close. Early 2000s Honda accord coupe v6-6mt. Not an acura but loads of fun stock and get even better with a suspension upgrade and good tires.
Got mine for $4000CAD @185000km a few years ago
It seems like Honda’s gonna be the way to go, but I love the extra small features of luxury brands
Ya I will agree with that. The acura line tends to come with the higher displacement and compression J-Series (V6) engines as well. But if you want cheap to mod and repair get something with a B- series or K- series (inline 4) engines.
The cars are all pretty easy to work on once you realize you have to remove the wheel cowling to get at most of the accessories and other components. The SUVs are a pain as that's not usually a great option (learning this on my current '03 MDX... looking at you power steering hose).
Even major work isn't terrible on these if you get yourself setup to drop the subframe easily and practice a few times. Just make sure to remember to get an alignment each time you do any work needing it.
The luxury features really do go a long way. Driving an Acura with some TLC and parts put into it would be a vastly different than a much-harder-tuned Honda.
To get a good experience out of a Honda you'd likely go a more "raw racer" route, with bucket seats and carbon fiber wings and racing steering wheels.
With an Acura, you'd probably rather reupholster the interior (if needed,) maybe do some body kits, aftermarket headlights, etc. Not as flashy and not as "fun," but definitely a more luxurious ride.
If you want a pinnacle "fun" project car, shoot for a miata. It's almost as stereotyped as a Civic but they're a hell of a good time, cheap, and have lots of options in the aftermarket
Generally, it's hard to find aftermarket parts for the majority of Acuras, as they're primarily a luxury market over a street-sports market.
That being said, the old early 2000s Acura Integra is a beautiful car with decent aftermarket support, and you can get a pretty good deal on em. Just make sure insurance isnt too high, as they are classified as a sports car
That is not true at all unless you are talking about the newer engines because the ILX and TSX, TL and TLX have a ton of aftermarket performance support especially for those with the K24A series engines.
The RSX is pretty decent too. There is a fair bit of overlap, but for a project car you wouldn't want something like a TL. Theres a few models with decent support, but Integra and 2000s RSX are all I would really recommend for a money pit
04+ TSX with a 6 speed manual. Cheaper than a TL, get a intake mani, header, and tuner and you can make good power. They handle amazing with coilovers and good tires too.
A 04+TL manual would be good too, but normally more expensive and I found them alot more beat on. They also handle worse, coming from a guy who has owned both. Fuel economy is horrible compared to the TSX as well
Look for a 08-12 TSX with an manual transmission (or 04-07) those came with the K24A series engines that are completely capable of 500 horsepower without touching the bottom end. The Boostedboyz use the K series in most of their builds and routinely push 600-1000 horsepower. They have a old Honda Odyssey they call the rowdasy with 1000+ horsepower, A MR2 with a K-series and close to 1000 horsepower a k swapped NSX and a few others. In fact there is a S2000 with a Kswap running compound turbos @90psi (100psi @ Dyno) running sevens and the bottom end is stock.
The K series is Hondas most powerful and capable engine ever built, it will be set along side the 2JZ and LS's in terms of importance.
Hello, I am coming up on the time to get my first car. If i’m gonna get an acura, I want a sedan, Manual, and preferably fast enough to be fun. If i’m lacking on the speed then I would like the car to be newer. I’ve also heard they have AWD options so that would also be preferred. I would like to pay sub 10k but I will consider cars a bit over aswell, as i’m not sure what my price range will be. Is this reasonable? any recommendations would be appreciated.
TSX or RSX…you don’t need a lot of power for your first car. You need reliability and a chance to learn and hone your driving skills
what would be the benefit of one of those over a TL? are they just more reliable?
More reliable, easier to work on and find parts for, also more fuel efficient
op said he wants awd tho
Nothing awd for that budget
Don't get the MDX, I love my MDX but boy 'o boy it eats gas like a crackhead lol
Understatement. I picked up a 22 and I’m absolutely shocked as it’s love of gas. Even idling it just sucks fuels back.
Hey hey you… check kijiji or market place for a cheap well maintained beater you might find your dream car. Some of older models look so nice are can be relatively easy to fix or find parts for especially online- have an 02 1.7 el and it’s great on gas and drive really nice with a beautiful interior I love old cars
07-08 tl type s manual would be great
If they can find it at a reasonable price lol
The TSX is an amazing choice for a first car. The K20s last for eternity, amazing gas mileage, and enough speed to have fun.
I’ve narrowed down to these two cars! I’m a first time buyer and rider!
I’m 28 and I feel the next car I’ll buy will be at 36? Idk, I’m scared if I don’t pull a trigger now, I might regret for a long time!
Don’t know the price or budget but hatchback will have more utility. The integra will be more comfortable on long drive and highways.
So Integra CPO at 27k Civic Sport Touring at 33k
Civic Hybrid, by far.
title
Anything with FWD B- or K-series, preferably manual but the four cylinder autos don’t have the same issues the six cylinder autos have had.
I agree with b series but k series some of them burn oil, my k24 accord had its engine replaced at 80k. what about the J series though?
Don’t say that lol, K24 in my ILX is at 53k!
For J series I had an 06 TL purchased with 100k, ran to 215k minimal problems. My advice would be FWD manual. I’m not convinced they figured out the auto and once you add SH-AWD, propeller shaft failures, all those extra moving parts, etc. Was a hard nope from me. Seems the MDX’s etc weren’t affected the same way as the TL’s?
However I’m sure they’re all fine for most people. I drive 20k a year though. The day I can find the same pay closer to home I’m getting something more fun and less “reliable.” WRX or STi is my affordable dream car atm.
Integra.
my 94 integra has 304000 miles on it
Jeez that is high.
304000 miles is 489240.73 km
6 speed 1st gen tsx

I love my TL and only had a problem with the bluetooth. So confirmation bias, I'm choosing TL
your mom's
So I've been looking for a car, and I was wondering which one is better. They're kind of the same, I think, but I was looking at the Accords, the 2008-2012 ones with the V6 3.5. I know they're a little less reliable, but it's a Honda that's kind of fast, not super expensive, and still reliable, but I was also looking at the Acura TL AWD, basically the same car but better. It's just a little more expensive. What would you buy if you had the money? I'm sorry if this post seems dumb lol.
It actually sounds like you've got a strong grasp on what these cars are. The TL is, mechanically speaking, a Honda Accord with an optional all-wheel-drive system and a bored-out engine that makes more power.
Despite this similarity, I would strongly advocate for the Accord between these two.
The Acura-specific 3.7L V6 brings extra oil consumption problems. The premium fuel recommendation adds nearly 50% to your overall fuel cost. I'd gladly pay this cost for a more exotic-feeling car, but it's still an Accord.
I also personally prefer lighter vehicles, which you may not notice or care about.
The TL. Like you said, it's the same car but better.
I am wanting to trade in my 4Runner for a sedan. Key reasons are: save gas, lower monthly payments and no longer need an SUV.
I work from home and therefore only drive around 7 to 8k miles a year for the 4Runner.
I’m currently paying around 780 a month for the 4Runner plus like 150-200 bucks in gas a month.
My considering options are: Tesla model 3 (used or new), Honda civic 2023 sport touring or si, Honda accord 2022, Acura integra 2023, Mazda 3.
It is important to note that this car will just be for fun driving and or errand runner, as we use my suburban for family trips, etc. I have a big fam.
So what do you guys all recommend based on my situation.
You’ll save a lot not getting a luxury vehicle. So if lowering your monthly payment is a key, go with the Honda Accord. Roomier than the civic and mazda3 and also the insurance is a lot cheaper on the Honda than the Acura or Tesla. Lots of pros getting the Honda
The Integra insurance is actually quite low. I was sincerely surprised.
If insurance is a factor definitely get a quote for each vehicle. It's been very inconsistent for us, we paid more for insurance on a 2020 Ascent touring, then we do for either our 23 MDX Type S advance, or our 22 x5m50i. Coverage is the same for all three other than the value of the vehicle itself, through USAA.
Just bought the 2024 integra and love it as a daily. Would recommend!
We bought a new Integra, fun car. Got the 6 manual. Another choice is the Subaru Outback, it goes from base up to Wilderness and Onyx trims.
Unless you need the hatch or 'sportiness' the TLX is such an upgrade over the integra. You get the 2.0T 10spd combo plus an actual acura interior. You can get a CPO Tech pack with AWD for around the same as the new integra
Only thing would be that fuel economy isn't there. Coming from someone with a CPO AWD Aspec haha
I have a new 2.0 turbo for a loaner and miss my v6 tlx dearly
Type S :)
Before switching from a SUV to a sedan, please consider that getting in and out of a SUV is easier than from a sedan. Don't know how old you are, but having the seat at "butt level" was an added bonus I discovered after switching from a sedan to a SUV which I appreciate more and more as I have gotten older. There are smaller crossover vehicles that sit up higher that get decent MPG if that is a priority for you.
Yeah okay but .. sitting higher is good for in out but sucks for actually driving
This, so true.
Help Me Choose a Car
Which car should I buy?
I’m looking for a cool looking used car that’s 27k or under and reliable. I’ve done some research, and these are the used cars that I’ve found. Lmk if there are better options or if there is a car I should choose over the others. Whatever car, I choose I will be driving to and from work, getting atleast 5 years out of it with little to no problems. I have about $15k to put down.
2023 Acura Integra a-spec (2k miles): $27k
2021 Honda AccordHybridSport(16k miles):$24k
2022 Mazda3 Hatchback (26k miles): $23k
2022 Honda Civic Sport (24k miles): $21k
2022 Honda Civic Hatchback (50k miles): $20k
2017 mazda6 Grand Touring (52k miles): $15k
Some of these cars probably get better mileage than others, if that is a factor for you. The Consumer Reports Used Car guide contains good information on reliability for different models and years.
Where can I attain this for free?
Check local libraries for Consumer Reports publications. Or perhaps take a quick look at a news stand or book store, but given the expense of a car and potential costs of choosing a bad one, the newstand price is small potatoes.
Edmunds also publishes used car ratings which I believe you can get online.
Go drive all of them.the seats in each have a totally different feel. Space for passengers is also something to consider.
If you want sporty and premium, go for the 2023 Acura Integra A-Spec.
If you want practical and efficient, the 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid Sport is the top pick.
If you want a balance of fun and affordability, the 2022 Mazda3 Hatchback hits the sweet spot.
Get the Mazda with a turbo.
Buy the 15K Mazda, or find a similar age Honda. Then, be prepared to spend a bit to maintain it for the next five years

What would the best Acura be for a first car. (I was thinking of a early 2000’s TL)
If you’re looking for a TL, consider the TSX! I originally wanted a TL but I discovered how great the TSX is. You do not get the V6 like the TL, but it is a smaller, simpler, and much more reliable car than the TL. It also has the K24a2 engine with a decent 200hp, and easily gets 25mpg. Specifically look for the first Gen TSX, which is 2004-2008, the 2nd Gen can get somewhat pricey.
The TSX is essentially a baby TL!
Acura RSX, TSX, ILX would all make great first cars. (you want a 4 cyl for your first car, not a thirsty V6)
You should consider Lexus because RWD
Those early 00s TL had a ton of problems, I'd avoid those and pick up a newer one
If you’re looking at the TL specifically, go 3rd gen (2004-2008). They look way better, for one, they have Bluetooth, and they look way better. If you can find a deal on a 2007-2008, they got a facelift and they fixed all the transmission problems. I had a 2005 and it was by far my favorite car I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned around 25 vehicles. I’m actively looking for another as we speak. Comfortable, quick enough to get out of its own way, they sound amazing, highly reliable, and VERY easy to work on considering they’re transverse V6s. Plus, driving it like a normal person, you can get upwards of 30mpg and even a little more.

Man I have a suggestion for you. Look into it at least a little bit. Try a Hyundai Veloster n 👍
Get a BRZ/FRS/86. Great drivers car
Get the Ford Pinto. It can’t be beat, just don’t get rear ended.
😂
A c6 corvette will be very reliable and more sporty then anything else under 30k
The civics will hold their value the best, Accords will drop a little faster because they are considered luxury and less desirable over time. Mazda doesn't hold its value well, so you would only buy it to drive personally.
so im a new driver looking to get a first car. I make enough to cover insurance on pretty much anything so im not worried about it, but my bike has been giving me problems so i do need a car somewhat quickly. looking for something reliable and luxury-ish(leather interior, electric seats, decent infotainment[i don't wanna upgrade it later on], and just something with a nice driving experience, I've had my eyes on a few acuras, mainly rsx's and this and some lexuses, I just need some good opinions on what to look into. repair costs are kinda a concern but a little higher than average is okay. if any more info is needed let me know im really stumped on what to get
get a GS300 with a good service history! i have an '03 IS300 that i will never sell cuz its such a tank but i bounce back and forth all the time about picking up an LS or GS as well. Acura from that time is just as good and reliable too but i like RWD personally.
Lexuses are pretty reliable as long as you get one with a good service history and keep up with the service. I don’t know what year or model will give you the things you’ve listed on there. I would not recommend Acuras.
really? I've heard really good about acuras, but the lexuses I've been looking at are pretty much any model es300 and gs300 from like super late 90s
Hey there! For a first car around $4-5k, I'd recommend looking at some reliable used models that still offer some comfort features. Honda Accord or Toyota Camry from 2010-2012 are solid choices - they'll give you that luxury feel with leather and electric seats, plus incredible reliability. Expect around 25-30 mpg and low maintenance costs.
A few other options to consider: Mazda6, which has a more sporty feel, or a slightly older Lexus ES if you want true luxury. Just make sure to get a thorough pre-purchase inspection - at this price point, maintenance history is key.
Pro tip: Check CarFax, look for one-owner vehicles, and prioritize service records. Since you're a new driver, something dependable matters more than flashy. Aim for under 100k miles if possible, and budget an extra $500-1000 for potential initial repairs or maintenance.
Facebook Marketplace and local dealerships can be good hunting grounds. Don't rush - take your time finding the right balance of features, reliability, and condition. Good luck with the search!
mazda depeciate hard, may get better deal
best affordable acura car
Key Considerations for Affordable Acura Cars
Model Options: The Acura ILX is often considered the most affordable model in the Acura lineup, providing a luxury experience at a lower price point.
Budget: Determine your budget range. The ILX typically starts around $27,000 for new models, while used models can be significantly less.
Fuel Efficiency: Look for models with good fuel economy. The ILX offers competitive mileage, averaging around 24 MPG city and 34 MPG highway.
Features: Consider what features are important to you, such as safety ratings, technology (like infotainment systems), and comfort options.
Resale Value: Acura vehicles generally hold their value well, which is a plus if you plan to sell or trade in later.
Recommendation: The Acura ILX is the best affordable option, especially if you're looking for a new vehicle. It combines luxury features, reliability, and a good warranty. If you're open to used cars, you might find even better deals on older models, which can provide excellent value without sacrificing quality.
