TL;DR
Budget-Friendly Options
For travelers seeking affordable accommodations in Finland, Omena Hotels are frequently recommended. These hotels are known for their competitive pricing and no-frills approach, making them suitable for budget-conscious visitors [1:2],
[5:8]. Another option is Forenom Hostels, which provide basic amenities like TV and shared kitchen facilities at a low cost. However, guests have noted that the soundproofing can be lacking
[5:5].
Central Locations in Helsinki
If you're looking for a centrally located hotel in Helsinki, Hotel Finn offers an affordable stay with a prime location [1:4]. While it may not be luxurious, it provides easy access to the city's attractions. Radisson Blu Plaza is another centrally located option, though it may not fit the "affordable" category as closely
[1:5].
Unique Experiences
For those interested in unique experiences, Saariselkä in Lapland offers a less touristy environment with opportunities to enjoy skiing, sledging, and viewing the Northern Lights. This area is slightly less crowded than other popular destinations like Rovaniemi and Levi [2:2]. Additionally, Kemi Ice Castle provides a magical experience even for locals
[2:1].
Considerations Beyond Discussions
When choosing a hotel, consider factors such as seasonal pricing fluctuations, especially during high-demand periods like festivals [5:5]. It's also worth checking if the hotel offers amenities that suit your needs, such as saunas or breakfast options. If you prefer modern amenities, look for hotels with walk-in showers and decent air conditioning, similar to Ibis hotels
[1].
I'm a fan of small, modern, inexpensive, smartly located hotels. Part of "modern" includes walk-in showers and decent AC. For example, Ibis hotels can be great for me. And I recently stayed at Comfort Hotel Xpress by Stockholm Central Station. They have one in Oslo as well. The hotel met all of my criteria. I couldn't have asked for a better location and the price was competitive with airport hotels. I don't think they make hotel rooms any smaller than that one lol but I have np with a tiny room if the hotel meets all of my other criteria.
It doesn't look like there are any Ibis hotels or Comfort Hotel Xpress locations in Helsinki. Are there any types of similar hotels that you would recommend along these lines? I recently stayed @ Hotel F6 in Helsinki City Center and that was a lovely hotel but obviously that's a nicer and more upscale hotel than what I'm looking for. Looking for something more cost optimized as described in my first paragraph
Scandic are similar to the Ibis chain. Helsinki has plenty.
Then there's omena hotel.
Try Valo, not sure how inexpensive it is, but passes the vibe check. Also, sauna on the rooftop is nice.
I stayed at a place in January called Hotel Finn that was nothing very special but nice enough, pretty cheap and very central. Could be worth looking into.
I've like Radisson Blu Aleksanteri.
Radisson Blu Plaza is perfectly located.

Hey hope everyone is doing well. As the title suggests, newly weds looking for a winter honeymoon and believe Finland would be a beautiful and unique experience. Neither of us have previously been, but we've seen some of the cozy hotels/cabins with beautiful views, potential to see Northern lights, etc.
Anyone previously honeymoon in Finland?
Locals, do you have any advice about coming in January? How harsh are the winters?
Thanks!
For a newly wed couple I’d say Saariselkä. It tends to be slightly less popular among tourists, with less party-people and families with small children than Rovaniemi and Levi which are big on tourism. Yet, it hosts all the classical Lapland experiences with skiing, sledges, aurora, and even a spa
https://www.icehotel.com/ is just across the border in Sweden.
It's expensive but wildly romantic
This winter seems to be pretty bad for snow according to current info... Saariselkä would be the best bet I can think of.

Kemi Ice Castle was magical even for a Finn. Just like in the James Bond movie.
Aloituksena pyydän anteeksi koska aivan varmasti tätä kysytty täällä muutaman kerran.
Onko suositella oikeasti hyvää hotellia keskustassa? Saunallinen taikka sitten yleinen sauna hotellissa.
I am finnish myself and travelling at a business trip. Sauna is small and maybe like 10 stones in kiuas but still it is a sauna. Not all hotelrooms have sauna in Finland though. Price per night is about 180€/dollars
Having an in-room private sauna when I stayed in Helsinki is possibly the most luxurious thing I have ever experienced in a hotel.
What? No "benches too low" from any of you Finns? It's in Finland, so I guess it's OK. I wonder what type of comments we would have seen here if this sauna was in the U.S.?
U need go to härmän häjy
So one that is private so no issue about having a sauna the most comfortable way, without swimwear.
That’s the way in Finland, even in public saunas. And actually swimwear is usually prohibited.
I just came from a hotel sauna. No swimwear in women's sauna on anyone. One woman and I chose to wear a towel in the gender-neutral turkish sauna, and while I was there, one guy with trunks on and two naked guys entered the sauna and bathed.
Nothing unusual about that, like you said.
Swimwear is not allowed if pool has chlorine. That turn in to gas in sauna
What hotel?
Basic not fancy hotel in Seinäjoki
Sauna in a room is not common in Finland
Name?
That escalated quickly
Edullisista vaihtoehdoista on pulaa.
Hi fellow travellers,
in december we would love to spend some time in the snowy nature. We though about booking a small hut with sauna and chimney somewhere in the forest and of course Scandinavia is the first thing we thought of.
However, it seems a bit expensive for us. Do you have some recommendations for alternative countrys or even regions in europe? I heared a lot of good things about the baltic countrys recently.
Thank you!
Baltic states aren't cheap really, but certainly cheaper than the Nordics. They're obviously also further south, but still plenty cold, plenty of saunas, and plenty of forest. Doesn't sound like you want a city, but Tallinn is super cool.
I’m in Talinn right now and it certainly feels more scandinavian than Baltic. Restaurant prices are Scandinavian price but hotel is pretty cheap
Quebec
Magical in the winter, consider Winter Carnival in Quebec City in February, have a drink at an ice bar, saunas, go cross-country skiing or snowmobiling in the forest
Slovenia has Alps, much cheaper than Nordic countries
Poland, Slovakia, on the Tatra mountains. Slovenian Alps.
I just spent a few days in Tallin, Estonia. It was phenomenal. It's small with not a ton to do, but the old city is magical. You could stay there and day trip to Helsinki on the ferry.
I'm in Helsinki right now and everything tripled in price stepping off the boat.
Vår absoluta go to, för romantik och fet frullen!
Hi, we're visiting finland for Christmas and New Year's breaks. We made hotel bookings through booking.com. However, on a non-refundable booking, they messaged asking for twice the amount and when we declined to do that, they canceled our booking. Are there any local websites that could be more reliable? All other hotels in the area in our budget are now booked so this experience has really made our trip planning difficult. Any help appreciated!
There are 2 bigger hotel groups, Sokos Hotels and Scandic Hotels. I usually book directly with either of those. If the place I'm visiting doesn't have one of the 2 I'll use booking.com or hotels.com.
Directly from the hotel website. You can use booking.com etc to browse hotels, then go to the hotels website to book
Usually way more expensive unfortunately
That is actually not correct. Third party systems show usually the prices set by the hotel or hotel chain. The cheapest options in booking.com are non-refundable and can be obtained also on hotel websites. It used to be a bit different, but especially with smaller independent hotels you may well get the best price by contacting the hotel directly.
Direct from the hotel is also the best way if there are any requests or changes to the booking. The middleman often complicates things.
The webpages of that specific hotel/hotel group.

An Estonian’s Perspective: Discovering Latvia’s Hospitality
We’re currently on a little getaway in Latvia, and as an Estonian, I’ve been genuinely impressed by the experience. The accommodation we found is spotless, thoughtfully designed, and perfect for families—with everything from a sauna to safety features for kids.
What stands out the most is the warm hospitality. Our host has been incredibly accommodating, offering to prepare the sauna while we were out and letting us check out at our convenience. It’s clear that the focus here is on making guests feel welcome and at ease.
While I won’t dwell on prices, it’s worth noting that this level of quality comes at a more reasonable cost than what we’re used to in Estonia. But for me, it’s not just about the price—it’s the attention to detail and genuine care that have made this trip so memorable.
Latvia has so much to offer, and I’m already looking forward to discovering more of its hidden gems!
Latvian going to Tallinn in january.. haven't been in 20 years, can't wait!!!
Nice! 20 years is a long time, and Tallinn has changed a lot. It’s definitely going to be an exciting experience, especially if you have previous memories to compare it to. Have an amazing trip! 😊
I highly recommend visiting Telliskivi Creative City, which has plenty of amazing dining places, and the Noblessner area, known for its unique vibe. Of course, the Old Town is a must-see for tourists, but compared to 15–20 years ago, it has lost some of its charm among locals and isn’t quite the same as it used to be.
Then why tf I went to Tervis SPA. 🤔
Estonia's top SPAs, in my opinion, are undoubtedly Vihula Manor Spa and Wagenküll Castle Spa—both provide an exceptional experience with the perfect blend of relaxation, luxury, and a unique atmosphere. That said, I’m not saying anything bad about Tervis SPA either; it’s a great place to relax! But it’s good to know there are plenty of other amazing options to explore in Estonia. 😊
Summer 2024 we had very poor experience of Latvian hospitality. not in Riga city center but in subburbs the restaurants show at google open till 21.00 - if you arrive at 20:00 they tell you "sorry we are closing" - what bad service attitude - reminds me somehow to the dark times when this country was occupied by foreign power....
I am sorry, but wtf. 1h in a slow food restaurant is simply not a thing for dinner. I think for dining that actually is not unreasonable to be told that. In most western countries you have to reserve a table at least a day prior and the time slot will never be just 1 hour. On top of that, google opening times are not always updated. It is especially true if the next day is a national holiday.
I am struggling to understand how you found a correlation between a shop closing an hour earlier and the soviet regime...
We are very hospitable because we have 6 toes.
I couldn’t agree with you more.. Latvia has some awesome venues with awesome hospitality. They are a proud people who want to display the best their culture has to offer.
I know here must be a numerous number of post with this question but I want something updated...
So, can you guys recommend some not so cheap but also not so expensive hotels in Oslo? Not primary in city center...

Thank you :)
I've stated at Anker Hostel before for super cheap, but that was outside tourist season. They have private room options as well.
$400.00 US is budget?
No, it's a maximum amount of money I'm willing to pay for a hotel. Total budget for a week trip is about 1.500 USD.
Are you looking for a hotel for a week for 400 US dollars??
That makes more sense.
I'd check out airbnb to get the most for your money. You'll struggle finding hotels for 400$ total for a week.
I have an air mattress you can crash on for 200 a nigth! I really need money 😅
200 a night? Op might as well book a hotel
I would be interested in that myself.
