TL;DR
Affordable Watch Brands Under $500
Several brands consistently emerge as favorites for affordable watches under $500. Seiko is highly praised for its variety of automatic and quartz watches [1:2], while Citizen offers reliable Eco-Drive models
[1:3]. Orient is known for its stylish yet affordable options like the Bambino
[4:5], and Casio provides excellent value with both digital and analog models
[1:2]. Timex is also a popular choice for those seeking classic designs at budget-friendly prices
[3:6].
Budget-Friendly Options Under $150
For those looking to spend less than $150, Watchdives offers both automatic and quartz options that are well-regarded for their quality [3:1]. The Casio Duro is often cited as a great budget diver watch
[3:3], and the Invicta Pro Diver provides an affordable automatic option
[3:3]. Timex also has several models in this price range, such as the Q Chronograph
[3:4].
Microbrands and Unique Finds
Exploring microbrands can yield unique styles and excellent value for money. Brands like Mido offer a long history and quality watches within a reasonable budget [5:7]. Other microbrands mentioned include Henry Archer and Balticus, which provide distinctive designs that stand out from mainstream offerings
[5:1]
[5:8]. These brands often have limited production runs, adding exclusivity to their appeal.
Considerations for Choosing Affordable Watches
When selecting an affordable watch, consider your personal taste and financial comfort [2:4]. It's important to choose a watch that fits your lifestyle and wrist size, especially if you prefer smaller or less bulky designs
[4:4]. Additionally, understanding the difference between quartz and automatic movements can help you make an informed decision
[4:3]. Lastly, shopping for used watches or exploring local listings can sometimes lead to great deals on vintage or discontinued models
[3:2].
Edit: I forgot my basic algebra, I meant less than $500
For me, it goes:
San Martin (Original Designs specifically)
Citizen
Bulova (vintage re-releases specifically)
Tissot
Orient
Seiko is by far my favorite with Casio taking a very very close 2nd. Very different watches for me though. I like my automatics and quartz's to come from Seiko. I like my digital watches to come from Casio.
Citizen, seiko, Casio, timex
A man with taste enjoys the sound of his Timex ticking from across the room.
My wife makes me keep my Timexs in a drawer. 😂
Citizen, Orient, Tissot, Glycine
I forgot about Quartz Tissots.
Seiko and Bulova are my top two. Currently wearing a Super Seville (outside of the stated budget though). Bulova has been killing it with the retro stuff lately.
I’m surprised there aren’t more Super Sevilles on the grey market.
Apparently Jomashop ran a sale on the them earlier this week. I think they were like… $400? $450? I got mine on sale at a jewelry store for just over $600 after tax.
Orient.
I've been doing ALOT of searching for a nice affordable watch. I see all these posts about affordable watches. Best brands, etc., and it got me thinking..
What makes a watch affordable? Myself, I think it's irresponsible to spend more money than you are able just to say "I have a (insert brand here)".
Do I like nice watches? YES!!! My wife would even say I'm a little obsessed. However, when it comes to collecting I think it's up to the individuals taste and finances and what they are comfortable with.
I have a few nice Citizens, a Fossil, a Gshock, and have my eye on some Orient Bambinos and Seikos. But that doesn't mean they are affordable for everyone. In truth... for me, anything over $300 is frivolous. This may not be the case for everyone, but it's my opinion for myself. If rather use the money for vacations, dinners with my wife, gifts for our children, etc.
I actually just purchased a Timex. Not the greatest specs and I replaced the leather strap (which was horrible) a decent bracelet and it's a nice looking piece. A lot of people will frown on that. But if I'm out at a dinner with my wife, then who will actually notice?
I think we all get caught up in what others think rather than holding true to our own values and what makes us happy.
Just a philosophical thought that I thought I'd throw out there too see what others think.
I completely agree with your point of view. Those post/videos of "affordable" $1000 watches dont resonate to me. $300 sounds like a good sweet spot.
I’ve gone the other way here - dinner with family of 4 can easily be $200 for a meh meal. I should be able to spend more than that on a watch that will last years. My most expensive watch is $270 and I don’t want a big collection, but I may extend to the $1000 range for my next watch. I’ve talked myself into the fact that I have “room” for 1-2 more so I’m in no rush.
And I don’t want to buy any more sight unseen so it’ll be a while unless I dedicate serious time to shopping as options are limited where I am (Massachusetts) except in Boston.
Edit: but agree I don’t care about what others think of my seiko /citizens. I love them and enjoy them.
I completely agree about the price of dinner with the family. But with that said, I've had some health issues, and my mother is beginning to show her age (that's just a fact of life) . So when if the price of dinner is the same or more, the time we have with our family is more important and meaningful - IMO.
Now... I do have a couple that were $250'ish and I have my eye on a few that are under $500. Those are on my list and always prefect the " watch savings account". I doubt I'd really ever need, or want, to go above that.
This goes back to your point that "affordable" is not a number but unique to each person. But other than "watch" people - no one knows or cares what your watch cost. A Rolex may get a "wow" or autocorrected to capital R (just happened) but beyond that it's just a watch.
One simple guideline could be: if the idea of losing or breaking a specific watch is stressful for financial reasons, it's not affordable.
Insurance makes my higher end watches more wearable.
I was taught something different about luxury items
To afford them, you have to be able to buy 2 of them and throw them away without it financially impacting you.
Personally I bought a tag heure automatic aquaracer last week as a birthday treat to myself. I'm an electrician and plan to wear this watch daily and don't care if it gets scuffed (braclet already has minor scratches after a week) To most people this is horrible and my watch should be in a safe! To me it's as much a tool as my drills or pliers and financially if I damage it, it'll annoy me obviously but will not change my bearing one single bit
Could I save money and buy a seiko sports 5 that'd do the same job? Sure! However my last tag lasted 15years in the trade, I fancied an upgrade and trust the brand!
I wear my watches under similar conditions. Did something bad happen to the first Tag? Or did you just mean you wore it for fifteen years before upgrading?
FULL DISCLOSURE... I do have a more expensive watch. My smartwatch!! I've always been against them. But it was bought on the advice of my cardiologist (and wife) after my heart attack and open heart surgery. I still prefer my normal watches.
I just got the Samsung ring, same reason, to go back to my nice automatics.
I think I might like shopping for watches more than actually owning them. I enjoy looking around seeing the designs and craftsmanship and I have a whole folder of favorited marked watches on my browser. But probably 99% of the time I will be wearing my smartwatch as it gives me quick easy access to some health monitors I need and depend on. I did take the plunge and finally got a watch I went with a nice looking "affordable" casio ediface as this will be a date night at most wearable. But yes youtube cracks be up lets look at the top 5 most affordable watches less than $10K. We have different definitions of affordable.
That's funny.... I enjoy "shopping" for them as well, though maybe not as much as wearing them. My smartwatch is also on my wrist 90% of the time as well for the same reason. But often, like today, I'll wear one of my others just for the HECK OF IT!!.
The Ediface is definitely in my shopping g cart wish lists. Nice choice.... enjoy!!
Hi everyone, what are your favorite watch brands under $150? Could you mention if you have automatic watches (at that price point) or just quartz? Don't limit yourself to big well-known brands; I want your best finds.
Chinese manufacturers such as steeldives\watchdives are objectively the best bang for buck and use seiko movements (quartz and automatic)
Cheaper seiko\citizen\orient lines
Lots of good vintage swiss\japanese quartz as well
If your budget is low I also highly recommend hunting local listings and clearance in nearby retail stores and trying to find a good deal, my favourite grabs for 150> were sourced this way.
Also timex is great, the q chronograph is exactly that price and is one of my favourites
Casio Duro is the budget GOAT. However, if you want an automatic, look at the automatic Invicta Pro Diver (but they have quartz too, so read carefully before purchasing) or a Used Seiko 5 on chrono24 or Jomashop.
I also saw that you can make cool mods with the Casio Duro, sapphire crystal, mineral oil, bezel change.
People certainly do mods on all kinds of cheap watches. Duro is no exception!
Also I love the Invicta 1953 coke
Casio (including g shock) and Timex are your best bets at that price. Maybe some Citizen Eco-drives.
Vostok is a very good option. The problem is getting them, especially the new models, which is complicated due to the global context.
The problem I've had with Vostok is that most watch repair places for me refuse to work on em, and if they do, you're paying double what you paid for the watch for a service.
I have a Bambino as my dress watch, I wear it occasionally and prefer divers for the most part, it’s perfectly good for the price point.
The Mako line is great too. Not sure what they go for now but I have a Ray II that I got for around $150 in 2012 that has been amazing
Under $150; Watchdives (both auto and quartz options.
I am looking for a timepiece that would look great suitable for everyday use. I would like to spend around 100$ but can go up to 200$ but I would prefer to spend as little as possible. My wrists are quite small (15-16cm I think) so I don’t want a bulky watch.
Currently, I have found the Orient bambino and Seiko tank look good to me but I would like to hear some opinion/advice/suggestions. Thanks
Casio
Seiko 5
Timex
If you are new to watches, make sure you understand the difference between a quartz and an automatic watch.
Seiko SNE529 100m water resistant so it is safe for pool or shower. Solar powered so it doesn't need battery changes.
I have the white dial version of Vaer’s field watch and really like it - would have probably gone with this one if I didn’t have mostly black dials otherwise:
https://www.vaerwatches.com/products/s3-calendar-field-watch
Since I've been on a Vaer kick I'll add that their site has a pre-owned section that's good for 20ish% off normal prices.
Bambino is a great choice. I love mine, and other people regularly comment on it positively.
There are tons of Seiko 5s under $200
Yeah but which one :D
Hey folks! I'm finally diving into the watch world, but my wallet isn't quite ready for a Rolex level commitment yet. My current budget is around 1000 bucks.
I'm looking for brands that offer great quality and style without needing to drop several grand. I've been eyeing Seiko and Tissot, but I know there's a whole world out there.
What are your go to brands for someone starting out? Also, are there any specific models you think are an absolute steal right now?
Microbrands, vintage, anything goes, I'm just trying to learn. Thanks in advance for the help!
Take a look at Mido, they have long history as a brand and some very nice offerings in your price range.
I have a Mido Commander II that I really enjoy
But I also agree with other folks who are suggesting microbrands. I have a number of microbrands and the dollar to value ratio is fantastic.
Seiko has some sub-$500 watches that are very nice.
That also have not resale value.
Get a used Swiss watch and you can always sell it for what you paid
The sub-$1K microbrand world is where I play.
There's *_so much_* excellent stuff out there, it's actually mind-boggling.
Here's my microbrands list as it existed as of like 4:30 AM (puppy just got neutered, "Look how they massacred my boy!") on 9/25. I've added a few more since then, LOL. Know that there are *many* more microbrands out there, this list is just my personal "hit list," makers who have stuff that I'm interested in, in one way or another. I've got a number of microbrands since I decided to not go the way of the luxury watches and thus could spread the love, but I ain't rich, so this is not what I've got in my own personal inventory, ROFL!
That said, I do have a few.
"Even" at the sub-$1K mark, the quality is just amazing. There's a couple in my collection -a Wise and a Henry Archer, to be specific- that have absolutely *perfect* dials. There's not a single thing out of place, there's not a single piece of debris or dust under the crystal: which is oftentimes more than I can say for even luxury (non-bespoke) watches, like Rolex.
And the lume - wow, the lume.
I'm an academic scientist by trade, so I try to look at things objectively, Even my most prized possessions - I'm usually pretty fair in my assessments of where they're outstanding, and where they could use a bit of improvement. Towards that, I'm always surprised why not more of us watch-nerds would spend the $30 for even an el-cheapo clip-on macro lens for our smartphones....until I remind myself that not everyone wants to know the ugly. =D
There's also a lot of great high-end productions out there, but I'm out of my lane to speak on those. If you'd like to play with microbrands, though, I'd be more than willing to nerd out with you for a bit!
You should add Makoto watches from Toronto and Alanti watches from Arnprior, as well as Worden watches from Guelph to your list.
Thanks! I'll definitely check those out and add as-appropriate!
ETA: I'm definitely going to be adding Makoto to my list. Definitely right up my alley! Thank you!
Is there a website for Alanti? I couldn't find it, even after I also searched with Arnprior or Ontario....
And while I found myself smiling in joy at the Worden offerings, alas, they're really not my thing. But they are definitely unique, and should make *somebody's* list! (The list only comprise of what I'm interested in, and is not meant to be a list of all available microbrands.)
That's a fantastic list! I completely agree about Henry Archer. Great watches and an incredible value.
Also, OP, you are on the right track with Tissot and Seiko. I own more of those two brands than anything else. One of my favorite (as in I wear it a lot) watches is a Seiko that I bought used.
Nice! Thank you!
I'll definitely have to have a look at those.
This isn't meant to be a complete list of microbrands. For example, there's Yema (which is classified by many as an "independent", and there's also the lager "Chinese Watch" houses, such as San Martin.
There's also several well-known brands that I did not include.
That's because this list contains only the brands that have one or more watches that directly spark my interest - either enough so that I've already moved on one of their pieces, or ones that I plan to hit or aspire to, at some point.
But thank you for your contributions, as I'm always looking to learn! I will definitely check out those suggestions, and, of-course, bookmark those that I like.
PS: My bank account does not thank you. LOL!
Oh, OK, OK.....I see what you've done, here. Nice!
I *love* the Balticus supercompressors. That's on the hit list.
Drooling over too many G. Gerliach watches for me too list. I didn't even think about a square-pillowcase with a 12-o'clock crown *and* pushers. My eyes have been opened. On the list, for sure.
Thank you!!!
Hamilton Khaki Field Auto is a great field watch.
Sure!
The Wise is an AD810A - https://wisetimepiece.com/products/adamascus-ad810a
The Henry Archer is a Havstrøm in the Atlas colorway - https://henryarcher.com/en-us/collections/havstrom/products/havstrom-meteorite-atlas
I've always gone with Casio as my non-smartwatch watch so to speak. I've always had a soft spot for the analog digital varieties. My current Casio is the GA-B2100 which I'm very happy with
Timex Expedition North
Timex is nice, Its like a more affordable Casio <3
Timex Weekender XL for me.
This one is a classic, too bad its kind of hard to get it here where I'm from
Casio Royale (AE1200)
What is that first Casio? I dig it.
Casio Duro
G Shock GW-6900 best 70 dollar watch, potentially the best watch in my whole collection.
I got my G-Shock for $50 and it was on my wrist for about 4 years
That depends largely on your definitions of "Cheap" and "suck".
Something around $50 or less that won’t fall apart after wearing it a few times. Sorry, I should’ve been more clear.
Not a worthy investment for a durable watch. I think save atleast 200 to buy a nicer one. Watches really are just fashion statements imo you can just use ur phone to tell time
Look at Casio and Timex.
MVMT is pretty good and its's not bank breaking, but it will still cost you more than a cheap one you can get at target. https://www.mvmtwatches.com/
“And today’s video is sponsored by MVMT watches”
nice
I'm not sure this qualifies as "affordable", but if it does, they are definitely at my limit of affordable. But.... I've got my eye on these two puppies.
I love the yellow and black contrast on the Bulova. That's my first choice. It will definitely be a while, but these two are at the top of my list.
I have the orient kanno in black and the mako in blue, and they are both good solid watched that deliver beyond their price. BUT, I also have my eye on the yellow Bulova. The sweep second hand in a quartz movement, and the dial details look awesome. Joma has it with a rubber strap for $365. It’s on my short list.
I'd like to say its on my short list too.... but it will take a while to save up.. I had some heart issues not too long ago, so Im quit eating out. I'm taking the money I would have spent on eating out, and seeing it back as my watch savings.
IT'S GONNA HAPPEN!!
Having owned two Kamasus, that's what I'd recommend. It's an incredible watch.
Yeah that's why it was on my list first. It's ot much different in looks than the Ray2 and definitely more affordable. That will be my downfall... I'll get impatient.
I have similar looking watches - no divers - but similar aesthetics (black/silver, blue/silver). The Bulova is completely different from anything I have.
In my opinion the Bulova tends to look a little cheaper in person, plus buying them at MSRP you're getting absolutely robbed. That precisionist movement does kick ass though, so there are definitely pros and cons.
The Kamasu comes in a variety of colorways, there's one with a teal dial and vintage style cream indices that has tempted me many times.
I love that bulova, smoothest sweep except for a spring drive too
The yellow dial is outstanding!!!
RIGHT????? I LOVE IT!!
You have smart eyes.
Casio is the best according to my opinion. I might be biased because Casios are the only affordable watches I've ever tried. Timex is good at making watches at affordable rates but sometimes it lacks design or sometimes it becomes a cheap knockoff brand. Titan gives a luxurious feeling without being too expensive but I don't think it has much fame among the watch community. Fossil makes nice watches too and it has a lot of good-looking watches and I don't know a lot about this company. If there are some nice brands that I missed, please let me know.
I really only wear Timex and Casio. affordable, reliable, and they always get compliments.
I love my Orient Mako, but the fact that I never have to worry about the battery in my Citizen makes it one of my favorites. Setting the time is one thing, but the Mako has day and date windows so it's just kind of a pain in the ass every time I go more than a day or two without wearing it - which makes me want to wear it even less.
Titan and fossil seem like gimmick pieces. Casio is definitely a timeless watch brand, the best of the bunch. Timex has a few good offerings but I wouldn’t spend my own money on them personally except maybe the marliner. I think other brands offer more for the same price.
Titan is an Indian brand. I use it. Not the best movements but all made in house so I can respect that. And in india they are like half the price of the equivalent Casio with much better leather strap quality.
> all made in house
No. I am an Indian and I have handled a Titan automatic that a friend of mine had. It had a Miyota movement.
Truthfully, Fossil has some nice pieces if you can get them on sale, especially double sale where they have the normal percentage off, and then a code for extra savings. That being said, other than an entry level watch, I would say go with Citizen, Orient or Seiko if you like the classical styles or if you like digital, Casio is always the best for those.
Everyone here hates on Fossil, but they're the first watch I remember owning and thinking 'I really like the way this looks' Second was a Skagen.
Casio, Seiko, Orient. The Japanese Trinity.
Fossil are meh, never heard of Titan.
EDIT: Let’s not forget Citizen. For whatever reason I thought I’m only allowed to pick three brands. Great brand if you dig their designs and sizes
You mention Orient before Citizen?! As Japanese trinity I would have listed Casio, Seiko and Citizen.
I actually wanted to mention Citizen, but for whatever reason I thought I’m allowed to only pick three brands lol.
Citizen is great too, if you dig their designs and sizes :)
Seiko owns Orient so in terms of independent brands,. The trinity of Japanese watch brands are Casio, Seiko, and Citizen.
I'm new to watches and seems like an interesting thing to get involved with.
I like a lot "Bulova Accutron II" with a leather strap. This is what I like. For a good watch, I find the price to be very reasonable.
How much are you willing to spend?
At most maybe $150?
Well, this is on sale right now. From 500 to 115$.
I live in Europe. This is actually cheap.
I’ll jump on the bandwagon and tell you to look at Seiko series 5. It’s a big joke around here that everybody has one but honestly outside of here and r/watchescirclejerk you don’t see them on too many wrists. I just picked up a Seiko SRPB79 and it sits shoulder to shoulder with Rolex and Jaeger watches in my Watchbox.
I second this. Seiko 5’s are a dime a dozen around these parts even though I’ve yet to see one in the real world. Buy a Seiko 5, throw a NATO strap on it and wear it with pride. Best option.
I haven't seen anyone mention Timex and Swatch in here yet!
Deep blue, especially when they run a 40% off sale, are great divers for the money.
I'll check them out!
"Deep" is the code.
What's relatively inexpensive to you? I look at the $1000-$1500 range as relatively inexpensive compared to the standard $3K-$8K that a lot of Omegas, Breitlings, Tudors, and Rolexes will set you back.
But if you're talking about $100-$150, that's a totally different list of suggestions.
Check out the watch buying guide in the sidebar.
Uh huh. Smells like someone has a Rolex BLNR on their wrist....
best affordable watches
Key Considerations for Affordable Watches:
Budget: Define what "affordable" means to you. Generally, watches under $200 can be considered budget-friendly.
Style: Determine the style you prefer—casual, dress, sports, or smartwatches. This will help narrow down your options.
Brand Reputation: Look for brands known for quality and durability. Brands like Seiko, Citizen, Timex, and Casio have a good reputation for affordable watches.
Movement Type: Decide between quartz (battery-powered) and automatic (self-winding). Quartz watches are typically more affordable and require less maintenance.
Features: Consider what features are important to you, such as water resistance, chronograph functions, or smart features.
Recommendations:
Seiko 5 Automatic: Known for its durability and classic design, this watch offers automatic movement and a variety of styles, typically priced around $100-$150.
Timex Weekender: A versatile and stylish option, the Weekender is known for its affordability (around $30-$50) and interchangeable straps, making it great for casual wear.
Casio G-Shock: If you're looking for a rugged, durable watch, the G-Shock series is excellent. Prices range from $50 to $150, depending on the model.
Citizen Eco-Drive: These watches are powered by light and never need a battery change. Prices typically start around $150, offering great value for their technology and design.
Choosing a watch that fits your style and needs while staying within your budget will ensure you get the best value for your money.
