TL;DR
Recommended Brands and Models
Several brands stand out in discussions about air purifiers for pet allergies. The Coway Airmega is frequently recommended for its effectiveness, especially with models like the AP-1512HH and 200M that have specific pet filters [1:2]. The Blueair Blue Pure series is praised for its washable prefilters, which are effective at capturing larger particles like pet hair and dander
[4:1]. The Alen BreatheSmart FLEX is noted for significantly reducing allergy symptoms, thanks to its genuine HEPA filter
[3:1]. The Winix 5500 is also a popular choice, with users appreciating its performance in both bedrooms and offices
[2:2].
Filter Types and Maintenance
The type of filter is crucial when choosing an air purifier for pet allergies. True HEPA filters are essential as they effectively capture allergens like dander [5:1]. Some models come with washable pre-filters, which can help reduce costs by catching larger particles before they reach the main filter
[4:1]
[4:3]. It's important to regularly check and replace filters according to actual need rather than relying solely on manufacturer recommendations
[5:1].
Room Size and Placement
When selecting an air purifier, consider the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) to ensure it's suitable for your room size [5:1]. Many purifiers overestimate their coverage area, so aim for a model that can achieve four air changes per hour in your space
[4:2]. Placement is also key—positioning the purifier where pets spend the most time can enhance its effectiveness
[5:1].
Additional Considerations
While air purifiers are effective for reducing airborne allergens, managing pet hair often requires additional solutions like regular vacuuming or using a robot vacuum [1:3]
[3:5]. Combining these methods with an efficient air purifier can create a more comprehensive approach to managing pet allergies.
I share a ~2900 sq ft home with my wife and 2 Dogs and 1 cat, and we have guess pets come over all the time. With all the pets, we’re looking for an air purifier that can handle pet hair and dander effectively. Does anyone have recommendations for a good option for up to $500?
Some brands that I heard of
Thanks!
I have 3-4 Coway Airmegas and Winix 5500s. I found them all on my local Facebook Marketplace for $50-75 over the last 12 months. All in great condition. Previous owners sold because they were moving (college students; young professionals).
Agreed on coway! They have a pet filter for two of their units too, the AP-1512HH and the 200M. It specifically tackles pet odor, dander and ammonia stuff in the air from pet waste.
Pet hair is more of an iRobot Roomba Combo kinda thing? Typically not much of the hair is floating around. Even the lower end models work really well, and having themm set to vaccum when you are not there or sleeping is amazing at how much less hair you have to deal with. Just remember to dump the bin daily if you get a smaller one.
If you are talking dander, then Nuwave OxyPure ZERO Air Purifiers. Not expensive when you understand it has a washable filter that lasts 20 years. Seriously better than a hepa, as it filters more, and is washable, so no wondering if you need to change it out, or have to wait to order spares, etc. Best I have run across yet. The hepa type filters will clog and need to be tossed so often it becomes tedious, so it is nice to get away from them. Rated for about 2k space so I'd grab 2 if I had my druthers.
If you are after house size filtration, just go with something rated merv 13 or higher to stop anything airborne. Just find the size that fits your AC. It is worth modifying your box to handle a 4" filter it if doesn't have it already.
I personally put an electrostatic air filter in front of the normal filter intake. That way It catches all the large items like hair that gets kicked up. Makes the more expensive merv13 filters last much longer.
I've found a air purifier super effective for pet hair and dander in my home, you might wanna try something similar.
i love my blueair. i have two cats, one is as floofy as they come, and it keeps up easily. the outside cover is machine washable and i wash it every time i do laundry. my only complaint is the filters are pricey and they’re often sold out during allergy and wildflower season. you can’t find them on their website or amazon or anywhere. and the generic ones are garbage. i’ve learned to keep a couple extra on hand.
Hello!
I am here seeking the best air purifiers for people with multiple allergies - specifically animal related allergies! Hopefully looking for a HEPA filter but open to one that is close and works just as well! I would prefer one that we don’t have to buy filters for but that we can rinse out one. I’m not opposed to a good air purifier if I have to change filters, though!
Please let me know what you all recommend!
This seems to be a common question recently you could search or check out the air purifier sub.
Size of room and your budget would be helpful.
I have a Winix 5500 in both my bedroom and office and like them both
I've said it before, I'll say it again: Levoit 💯
Anyone have a recommendation for the best air purifier for pet allergies? Any price range just looking for the best one.
Allerair has the superior filters. Allerair 6000 models. Unbeatable carbon quantity (20-39 lbs). Also a super HEPA filter which this link will explain https://www.allerair.com/pages/super-hepa-filtration-optimal-indoor-air-quality. All I will say is the HEPA filter is H14 rated which is top dog.
Carbon filters are not necessary for pet allergies.
Hi, for good choice you should check :
I echo this. Air purifiers are great but keeping floors cleaned with a good vacuum is just as important.
Any HEPA filter will help. You have to vacuum frequently...maybe get a robot to vacuum daily between deeper vacuuming. You'll likely need more than one to cover an entire house.
Did you make any effort to search at all?
Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed today? Or allergies got you down? Either way, try to be nice or just be quiet.
Yes, but the most recent post in here was from 2021. So I wanted to see if anyone had updated recommendations.
Who cares if they searched? Did you make an effort not to be rude before you commented?
Well, I’ve been struggling with seasonal allergies for as long as I can remember and the Alen FLEX (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M6YMWNA/) helps me out a ton. I keep it in my office next to my desk and I bring it with me to the bedroom when I sleep, and I haven’t been on Allegra for almost a year now. I don’t even use nasal spray anymore, so I’ve been singing its praises ever since I got it. The genuine HEPA filter in there is a literal life-saver.
Now, since you’re dealing with pet allergies, without getting too technical, I’d say you have to focus on three things: size, CADR, and filters. You have to find something that’s suited for your space. Ideally, you’ll want to get a purifier that’s rated for about 20% more than the size of your room to get the most out of it. Also, look at the CADR. That’s basically the number that represents how efficient your machine is. For pet allergies, I’d say you want a CADR of at least 200 so that the purifier sucks in the airborne hairs as soon as possible. Finally, always go for a genuine HEPA filter. That’s the only thing that’ll help you out.
I need your help I’ve been dealing with pet hair and dander for years, and lately, my allergies have been acting up. Between my dog’s shedding and my cat’s well, everything, the air in my home feels heavy.
I’ve been researching air purifiers to help with pet odors, hair, and allergens, but the options range from barely effective to overkill for my space. I’m looking for something that actually makes a difference.
My budget is around $500. Some brands I’ve seen:
Ask r/airpurifiers
IMO the Coway is the only one worth considering on this list - blueair and Levoit are junk to be honest. Add Alen and Winix to your list.
Also, 2 things to keep in mind with air purifiers.
the advertised sqftage of the machine is usually grossly overestimated. Typically these estimates are based on cleaning all the air in a room once per hour. If you’re serious about purifier air. You need four air changes per hour.
Curb your expectations about it handling hair. Sure it may be able to catch come hair in the general vicinity of the machine. But hair is too heavy to suck in from across the room. To deal with hair and visible dust look at a corded and bagged vacuum. Which will also help tremendously with allergies.
Look for one with a washable pre-filter so you won't have to spend a fortune on filters clogged by fur.
I recently did an analysis on reddit data on air purifiers, basically ranked them by aggregated sentiment. Maybe you'll find the results helpful, especially if you're looking for something tried and tested: https://redditrecs.com/air-purifier/ You can filter for comments for pets and see a tldr the good / bad that was said for each model.
Wash the pets.
Blueair imo because they have washable prefilters, and pet hair and dander is large and honestly doesn't need HEPA filters to clear it out the way, say, smoke does.
That being said, a robot vacuum that runs daily will be more useful overall than a filter, and a nice hand vacuum you don't mind using for upholstery
I’m on the hunt for an air purifier that actually does a solid job tackling animal dander. I've got a couple of fur babies at home, and while I adore them, my sinuses aren’t always as enthusiastic. 😅
I’ve been doing some Googling, but honestly, I find myself overwhelmed by the endless list of brands—many of which I’ve never heard of. What I have noticed, though, is that this community tends to mention brands and products that don't even show up in search results—and that kind of insight is gold.
If anyone has a purifier that’s really helped with pet dander (especially from cats or dogs), I’d love to hear about it. Bonus points if it’s also quiet and doesn’t cost a fortune in replacement filters. Y’all are like my personal product review crew, and I’m super grateful for it.
Thanks in advance—and happy hump day! 🐪✨
I had a similar issue with pet dander and found that the key wasn’t just in the purifier itself, but in understanding the type of filter it uses—specifically looking for a unit with a true HEPA filter rated for allergens, not just “HEPA-type.” I also learned to check the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) to make sure it’s appropriate for the room size, and placing it where my pets hang out most made a noticeable difference. For long-term efficiency, I track how often I actually need to change filters versus what’s advertised—some models stretch that timeline more than you'd expect if your space is well-ventilated.
I’ve got a cat and a dog, and no matter how much I clean, the air still feels dusty. My allergies flare up constantly.
I found this article on the best air purifiers for cat allergens and I’m tempted to try one that’s geared towards pet homes instead of a generic purifier.
Has anyone noticed a big difference after adding one?
One of my roommate's has an (admittedly mild) cat allergy, and so does my father who occasionally visits. I have a small HEPA filter air purifier in our living room and each bedroom. I honestly think it makes a difference, as they tend to have no issues (unless the fuzziest baby rubs RIGHT up on their face).
Frequent brushing also makes a difference. Brushed out fur = less shed = less particles hanging around the air.
It’s absolutely worth it. Also brush them daily, it will help a lot.
Thanks for the tip.
There’s a cat food that’s supposed to help with allergies, I think it’s Live Clear or something similar, Purina has it. I’ve heard good things. It’s just expensive.
If you don't have an air purifier, you ARE the air purifier. I'd also recommend looking into Liveclear cat food/egg enzyme to help control cat allergies if you haven't already
Thanks for the tip, will look around
I recently adopted two adorable cats and while they’ve brought so much joy into my life, they’ve also brought a ton of fur, dander, and the occasional litter box odor. My allergies have been acting up, and I’m worried about the air quality in my small apartment. I’ve been researching air purifiers, but there are so many options out there.
I consider these brands for my air purifier
I’m looking for an air purifier that can handle pet hair, dander, and odors without breaking the bank. Ideally, it should be quiet since I work from home and energy-efficient. Please help me find one thanks
Maybe try posting on r/airpurifiers ?
Brands don't matter just look for something with a hepa filter
With pet hair, nothing beats regular vacuuming since air purifier is not made for to pick up pet hair. With odors, you would need one that uses carbon filters as air filter themselves dont do anything to odors.
if you are on a budget, IKEA air purifier does a good enough job and filters are cheap to replace with.
My roommate brought home a cat apparently I am very allergic so I’ve been thinking about buying an air purifier for my bedroom. My bedroom is around 15-20 m2 (161-215 sq ft). I’m moving out in 6 months so it's a temporary solution but it is neccesary for now since my allergic reaction is pretty bad.
I have been looking online and in this subreddit to look at some suggestions but I’m quite lost on which one would be good for collecting the cat hair/ dust particles (i am also allergic to dust mites)
Of course I keep my room closed so the cat can’t come in but I can’t really avoid dragging any hair at all in
I hope some of you can help me with this issue and thank you :)
Edit: thanks everyone for the recommendations and the help! I definitely know what to look for more and what to avoid etc. :)
Ok, so first things first, stick to HEPA Air Purifiers. These are essentially mechanical air purifiers that suck air in using a fan and then pass the air through a series of filters to clean it.
Basically, HEPA is one of the filters that these air purifiers use, hence the name. This filter removes both large and small particles (as small as 0.3-0.1 microns). Additionally, they have a prefilter for capturing larger particles like dander and fur and activated carbon that removes smoke and odors. Avoid opting for ionizers or ozone generators.
I personally use Morento HY4866-WF ( https://www.amazon.com/Purifiers-Display-Quality-MORENTO-Double-sided/dp/B0C1MPDTG7) in a similarly sized room. While it's actually designed to handle spaces as large as 100m2, using it in a smaller room allows for a much faster cleaning or more air changes per hour. I just find that arrangement to be working great for me.
Plus, I recommend that you learn more about CADR and air changes per hour. These both are key metrics for determining how well and how quickly the air purifier cleans the air. Morento HY4866-WF actually has dual intake or 2 x HEPA + activated carbon filters giving it a CADR of 300. For the price, it has one of the highest CADR ratings.
Pretty much anything with a HEPA filter will get rid of the particles causing you issues. There's no special requirement. See the stickied thread for some recommendations and just be sure to avoid ionizers.
Alright perfect thank you so much! Super helpful!
Fine
Agree
In addition to what everyone else has said:
If the weather outside is nice, consider keeping the window open all the time.
Consider getting a spirometry test. Many people with allergies also have asthma. I'm not a doctor.
Consider installing a MERV 13 air filter, as thick as possible, with low air resistance, in the furnace filter holder, if you can. 3M Filtrete brand is probably a good choice. Replace it per the manufacturer's recommended replacement schedule. Set the furnace fan to run 24/7.
It’s quite cold here now but I will try to when it’s a bit warmer! I had never really considered that to be honest but I do have some similar symptoms, I will thank you so much for the advice!
After days of research and reading hundreds of reviews, I finally settled on this Alen FLEX purifier in Oak.
https://www.amazon.com/Alen-Purifier-Cleaner-Allergens-Filter/dp/B01M6YMWNA/
It's a beautiful air purifier, and if you have a home with a more natural aesthetic like we do, the "wood" front helps the machine blend in more with its surroundings instead of sticking out like a sore thumb. We tend to like wood, natural fibers, ceramics, etc. for our decor, and I wanted a purifier that was barely noticeable at a glance because it somewhat camouflaged with its surroundings.
Because it has such a minimalist design and few obvious vents, I feel it would blend well with most decors, and it's so great that this model also has numerous colors and wood types to choose from.
As for how well it works, I could not confirm its effect on my health immediately but 3 weeks later, I absolutely noticed a reduction in the frequency of my allergy symptoms. With cats in the house, things are never going to be 100 percent perfect but this air purifier has made significant improvements. I also wake up a lot less with puffy red eyes or a scratchy throat.
For the price point - neither cheap nor extremely expensive, I honestly do feel that Alen FLEX may be the best (if not, one of the best) options on the market, and is a wonderful combination of effectiveness and good design.
The negatives…It can be a bit loud when on the highest setting, which may be an issue for some, but didnt bother me. Not overly loud but it depends on your personal opinion/perception of what constitutes "loud" for such a machine. Personally, I don't really notice the noise anymore - it's almost like white noise in the background. And I think that if it's bothersome at night, you can put it on the low setting, which significantly reduces the noise when you sleep.
Hey there, fellow allergy sufferers! If you're anything like me, you know how frustrating it can be dealing with those pesky allergens in the air. Luckily, Reddit's got our back when it comes to finding the best air purifiers for allergies!
To come up with this awesome list, I scoured through countless Reddit threads dedicated to allergies and air purifiers. I took note of the most recommended and highly praised models mentioned by real people who use them. I then compiled all that valuable information and gathered the top contenders for the title of the best air purifiers for allergies.
So, whether you're looking to zap away pet dander, pollen, or dust mites, keep on reading and discover the Reddit-approved air purifiers that will have your sinuses feeling clear and your allergies at bay. Let's breathe in that clean, allergen-free air together!

Air purifiers are definitely a great help when it comes to improving air quality. They can remove really tiny particles like allergens which are as small as 0.01 micrometers. The Coway Mighty, recommended by the WireCutter, is a fantastic air purifier that many people say has changed their lives. It costs around $200 to buy, and you'll need to spend about $60 each year on filters.
If you're looking for more affordable options, the Winix 5500-2 and Winix 5300-2 are also highly recommended. They are cheaper than the Coway Mighty but still do a great job.
However, I would suggest avoiding the LEVOIT and Medify brands. These air purifiers haven't been certified for their effectiveness, and their specifications can be misleading. They also seem to be rebranded Chinese products. Plus, they only sell online and have somehow managed to manipulate the rankings to show up in the top 10 everywhere. So it's best to steer clear of them.
Thank you so much! I will soon receive a Coway air purifier.
You have chosen wisely :)
Thank you so much for the reply and tips!!!
The Purina LiveClear products have been amazing for my allergies! They help prevent the protein in cat saliva that causes allergies. Before using this product, I used to have watery eyes and sneezed every day. But now, I hardly have any symptoms! It's great because I can still have my cats with me. Plus, my cats really enjoy the food, which is a big bonus.
So, I actually bought the same air purifier a few months ago, the LV-H128. I think it's pretty good.
I can't say for sure, but my allergies seem to have improved a bit since I got it. However, I've noticed that there are still allergens on our bedsheets, and apparently, carpets, especially older ones, can be full of allergens too. So, on days when we change our sheets, give the carpet a good vacuum, and have the air purifier on, things definitely feel better. But unfortunately, the purifier alone isn't a magic solution. But then again, my allergies are really bad.
Oh, and we like to keep the window cracked open for fresh air. I guess it might lessen the impact of the purifier, but it really depends on what you're allergic to. If it's just pollen that's coming in from outside, then it's best to keep your windows and door closed all day with the filter running, so you can sleep in a room with nice, clean air at night. As for me, I'm allergic to pets and hay, which we keep in a separate room, so having the window open doesn't matter in the winter... until summer arrives and the hayfever starts up again, of course.
I don't know what's causing my sneezing every morning. It's not pollen season because it's winter and I don't have any pets. I think it might be because of dust mites. I try to clean my bed sheets and vacuum often, but it doesn't help. I'm going to try using an air purifier as a last option because I wake up sneezing a lot and I have to take antihistamines all the time.
I understand your frustration of constantly having allergies. I have several allergies myself, such as pollen, hay, animal dander, animal saliva, dust, certain foods, and chemicals. Because of my constant allergic reactions, a growth called a polyp has formed in my nose, which causes my sinuses to get blocked and infected. I am supposed to have surgery to remove the polyp, which might help with my allergies, but it keeps getting postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
I suggest talking to your doctor about your allergies. My doctor prescribed me a medication called fexofenadine, which has been helpful. However, on days when my allergies are particularly bad or when I visit places with animals, like friends' houses with dogs, I also take acrivastine and cetirizine hydrochloride. Maybe a medication like fexofenadine could help you too. It's more affordable to get a month's supply of fexofenadine through a prescription than purchasing acrivastine, which can be expensive.
Do you have any health issues before you purchase the air purifiers? Like allergies or a little cough? We used to live in an apartment with bad window seals, so dust, pollen, and smoke from our neighbors would always come in. Our toddler had a persistent cough that wouldn't go away.
As we were trying to move out and end our lease, we asked our child's doctor if using air purifiers would help. Guess what? Not only did she say it would help, but she even wrote us a prescription for it! She told us to buy whichever ones we liked, and her office would provide us with a letter confirming the prescription. We then sent that letter to our insurance company, and they reimbursed us for the cost.
We chose two air purifiers that cost around $110 each, and we got our money back. And thanks to our doctor's recommendations, we were able to break our lease and find a much better place to live. Our doctor called it "environmental allergies" that were causing our toddler's prolonged cough. It might not work for everyone, but it's definitely worth looking into. Good luck!
I have the worst allergies ever, but luckily I found an air purifier that has been a total game-changer. My allergist recommended the Rabbit Air brand and let me tell you, it's absolutely amazing. Yeah, it's a bit pricey upfront, but when you consider the overall cost per use, it's actually cheaper. The one I got covers 600 feet, but they also have a bigger one that can cover 1000 or 1200 feet, I think. Mine cost around $400-450, which is definitely an investment.
Before getting the Rabbit Air purifier, I had a cheaper one that cost $120, but it didn't help me as much. And you know what? It ended up costing me way more money in the long run. With the Rabbit Air, I only have to replace the filters every 1.5 years, and it costs $90 for all the filters. On the other hand, with the cheaper Honeywell one, I had to replace the filters every 3 months, and they cost around $10 or $27 each, so I was spending around $150 a year just on filters. With the Rabbit Air, I only have to vacuum the filters every 3 months and replace them every 18 months for a total cost of $90. I've had mine for 4 years now and haven't had any technical issues, so it's definitely been worth the money.
By the way, most cat allergies are actually caused by saliva, so an air purifier won't solve everything. But let me tell you, it has made a huge difference for me in terms of reducing hair, dander, litter dust, and pollen. There are also special foods available that can help reduce the allergen FEL D 1, which is what causes allergies in the first place.
To manage my allergies, I vacuum every single day and wash my sheets at least once a week. I even replace the pillowcase I use on my face every day. I have a ton of allergies, not just related to cats, so I have to do a lot of cleaning to keep everything under control.
Wife and I are looking for recommendations on a good Hepa air filter or two to work with pet dander/allergy stuff (cats) in our open living room and kitchen.
I've been going blind in research. I know the Winix 5500-2 is always highly recommended, but I think I need something a bit stronger. Wife wants something in white; 5500-2 is only in black. I know, I know...
So 12ft ceilings and about 1200 sft max between the two rooms. I was reading that it sometimes make more sense to get two units vs. one for large areas.
I was looking at the Airmega 400, Blueair 605 Classic, and Medify MA-40 and Ma-50s, but keep reading such conflicting reviews on reddit and I try not to look at Amazon where it seems many are getting used units, but labeled 'new'.
My budget is around $650 for one or two units, and I'm really leaning toward two units and they don't have to be the same.
Help! Thanks.
I ended up taking care of this on Black Friday and got some pretty substantial discounts...
Large Room: Alen Breathesmart 75i.
Me & Wife's Bedroom: Coway AP-1512HH Mighty
13 year old's bedroom: Levoit Core 300S
I was looking hardcore at the Medify MA-112, Coway 400S, and two Winix HR900s. I'll update you all once we get them settled in place.
Cheers.
How's the Alen holding up? Is it great for pet hair?
It's holding up very well & yes, it does a good job with pet hair. The Coway Mighty also does a good job with pet hair; we have that one in our upstairs bedroom & the Alen for the entire downstairs.

And or Wirecutter - air purifiers for a list of the highest performing independently tested Hepa, purifiers.
i would definitely snag the airmega 400s or 400 from amazon today as they both look to be on sale at the moment
So having severe allergies what would you guys recommend for just one 400sqft room? Was looking at the IQair but not sure if that would sufficiently move air all over the room… specifically need dander/ hair to be removed (fel protein)

best air purifiers for pet allergies
Key Considerations for Air Purifiers for Pet Allergies:
HEPA Filter: Look for air purifiers with True HEPA filters, which can capture 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, including pet dander, dust, and pollen.
Activated Carbon Filter: This helps to reduce odors from pets and other sources, making your home smell fresher.
CADR Ratings: Check the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) for smoke, dust, and pollen. Higher CADR ratings indicate better performance in cleaning the air quickly.
Room Size Coverage: Ensure the air purifier is suitable for the size of the room where it will be used. Look for models that specify the square footage they can effectively cover.
Noise Level: Consider the noise level, especially if you plan to use it in a bedroom or living area. Look for models with a quiet operation feature.
Maintenance Costs: Factor in the cost of replacement filters and how often they need to be changed.
Recommendations:
Dyson Pure Cool TP01: This model features a HEPA filter, activated carbon filter, and a fan function. It's effective for large rooms and has a sleek design.
Honeywell HPA300: Known for its high CADR ratings, this air purifier is excellent for larger spaces and effectively captures pet allergens.
Levoit Core 300: A budget-friendly option that includes a True HEPA filter and is compact, making it suitable for smaller rooms.
Blueair Blue Pure 211+: Offers a combination of HEPA and activated carbon filtration, great for larger areas, and has a minimalist design.
Choosing any of these options will help reduce pet allergens and improve air quality in your home.
