What Redditors are Saying

Best Alternatives to Herman Miller Aeron Chair

TL;DR

  • Steelcase Leap and Gesture are highly recommended alternatives.
  • Consider refurbished options for cost savings.
  • Autonomous Ultra 2 offers affordability with ergonomic design.

Steelcase Chairs

Steelcase chairs, particularly the Leap and Gesture models, are frequently mentioned as excellent alternatives to the Herman Miller Aeron. Many users have praised the comfort and quality of Steelcase chairs, noting that they offer comparable support and ergonomic benefits [2:2][3:3]. The Steelcase Karman is also suggested as a direct competitor with mesh seating [1:1][5:2].

Refurbished Options

Purchasing refurbished or used high-quality chairs can be a cost-effective way to acquire an Aeron or similar chair without breaking the bank. Users have reported finding Aerons and Steelcase chairs at local shops or online marketplaces for significantly reduced prices [3:1][4:3]. These chairs are built to last, making them a worthwhile investment even when purchased second-hand.

Alternative Brands and Models

Other brands and models worth considering include the Humanscale World chair, which offers a softer feeling seat pan and supportive mesh back [1:3], and the Autonomous Ultra 2, which provides a good ergonomic design at a more affordable price point [3:5]. Additionally, Haworth Very chairs have been noted as viable alternatives available through used office furniture dealers [4:5].

Personal Fit and Comfort

It's crucial to test chairs before purchasing to ensure they fit your body type and provide the desired comfort level. Some users have found that despite the popularity of the Aeron, it may not suit everyone due to individual preferences and body types [2:8][5:1]. Trying out various models in person can help avoid discomfort and ensure satisfaction with your choice.

ORIGINAL POST

I have had an Aeron for 19 years. It's beat up but has really stood the test of time. Before I buy another one, does anyone have opinions on other similar chairs? My only requirement is a mesh bottom. Thanks!

Aeron Remastered is more than a solid step-up from the classic. It's kept all the great features and resolved with the worst negatives.

For a mesh bottom there's only really the Steelcase Karman as a sonewhat direct competitor. I suppose the Cosm too, but that isn't as much a daily driver as much as a conference seat. Everything else is just far lower quality.

The Mirra 2 is not far lower quality, is it? I'm under the impression its quality is comparable to the Aeron's, but it's firmer and thus less popular.

It's still very high quality and the chair feels very similar to me, but the mesh doesn't quite reach that of the Aeron Remastered.

Humanscale world, Herman Miller celle... The world is softer feeling especially on the seat pan front and the 3 panel mesh back adds a nice supporting feel and the celle is firm but flexible high back chair.

Everywhere you go in this sub and all over the internet it’s the only chair that get’s recommended. It appears to be so good that even if someone has a strict budget the recommendation is to save up and wait to get the Aeron. That no other chair is even worth your time.

Steelcase is in the same category as Herman Miller, so that’s another option to look at.

I have a Steelcase Gesture at home and a Herman Miller Aeron in the office. I greatly prefer the Steelcase. Many others on this sub have recommended the Steelcase Leap.

I have a steelcase Leap2 and an Aeron at home that I go between... I have sciatic and nerve damage so I'm careful about my chair. The Aeron has the slight edge because it never really makes my hips hurt if I sit in it too long/too many days like the Leap but the Leap is bigger and easier to get situated in. I have tried gel pads and they just make it worse.

I have an old aeron at my office desk that I swiped from a coworker who changed to another office location and didn't take it along with him.

If your body type is compatible, it's amazing for long periods of sitting. I can also sit weird in them comfortably (one leg tucked in, or both, or criss cross when wearing my desk slippers haha).

I'll probably be able to take it when I depart because we seem to get a new injection of a different chair type every other year and they simply toss out old looking stuff in dumpsters to keep the office decor looking fresh.

I prefer the Mirra 1 series I use at home as the ventilated plastic back is a little more rigid but love the mesh seats on both because they're airy and not sweaty for long couch potato sessions.

I have used a Leap v2 and liked it but never a Herman Miller, which would you prefer overall? In the market for a chair.

i don't agree that this sub or reddit thinks "no other chair is even worth your time." i've seen consistent praise for the embody as well as steelcase leap v2s and gestures.

no chair works for every body type. for me, the aeron is less comfortable than both the leap v2 and the embody.

I have an Aeron at home that I bought refurbished. I have no regrets. It'll last me a very long time.

I convinced my boss to buy ergonomic chairs for the office and he went with the Leap v2s. They're not bad. I think in the short term they are more comfy but for extended periods I prefer the Aeron. It supports me better and I love the recline on it much more than the v2. I'm also not a huge fan of the arm rests on the v2. They're more adjustable but far less comfortable as they don't have as much padding.

Personally , for my body (slim, slight) and my needs, the Aeron chairs sucked.. I hated them.

I can understand why they're considered excellent in some demographics, but for me there ar emuch much better(and much cheaper) options.. even if I now prefer to use a standing desk and no chair

The herman miller comes in 3 sizes (bumps behind the head rest part) and while the seat isn't for everyone a basic seat cushion can help with that. My main issue with the newest ones is no recline locking like the OG designs. Agreed it's a bit over hyped but back before it was hyped you could get one for 3 or 4 hundred. Now it's usually sold for more as it's even more well known. If you can get one used it's a great chair especially if a well maintained older model.

$1000+ for a damn chair! and don’t even get me started on $2000 Anthros or Logitech Embody *almost double after collaborating with Logitech. that's truly insane!

No offense to any brand fans. I understand that top brands would have their marketing, warranty, service... which would increase the cost considerably, but at that point the price actually reflect real value. It feels like $2000 chairs should be universally loved if you can afford it.

would love to know if you guys using any chair which are actuallly good like Herman but cheaper?

You can get used aurons in great shape for 3 to $400, occasionally as little as 200 or 250 if somebody is moving and just doesn't want it

Steelcase leap 2 Is another good chair that you can get off marketplace around $200, even my local office liquidators sells clean ones for 249 when they run sales.

I'll never buy a cheap chair again, get high quality used

great "all day" comfort and quality, the back is just large enough even as someone 6ft2. I was sick of the tall throne or race chairs and just wanted high quality fabric that wasnt mesh.

I’ve tried the HM chair before—it’s actually pretty good, but the price is super expensive IMO. The backrest also felt a little short, even though I tried the C size. I have the Autonomous Ultra 2, which has a backrest that reminds me of the Embody but is much more affordable and has a really good ergonomic design.

I have a Steelcase chair that I brought from a local shop that sells refurbished/used company furniture. They get their products from companies that relocated or close their offices, etc. They sell a lot of other brands, including Herman Miller. The Herman Miller was super comfortable, but my feet did not plant firmly on the ground without shoes. I would go to a similar place near you and sit on each chair to test it out.

I thought the same thing, then I found that there are warehouses full of used chairs you can get for a fraction of the original price. These things are made to last forever, so finding one that's a couple three years old is no big deal. Plus, you can try out a ton of different styles at one time. I ended up with a Steelcase Leap 2. It's been worth every penny! And since the cheaper chairs I was getting before wore out after a couple years, I've already saved more than the original investment.

When it comes to chairs and some other things in life, buy once, cry once has been my hard learned lesson. Also, I recommend not spending a dime on a chair that you have not sat in. I got burned by one of those popular gaming chairs, and it was about $300 wasted. I did end up buying a Herman Miller, but I made sure to try it out first. I bought mine via Facebook Marketplace and got it new and for half price. The seller felt sketchy, but I paid in cash, and we went our separate ways.

I currently own an Aeron size B and no matter how much I adjust the chair, I am always in some level of discomfort. For this reason im now considering selling it and buying something else, which is kind of annoying as i love the look of the chair.

I'd ideally like to spend around £500, however am willing to go up to a grand if that means ill get a good quality product. Ill be using this chair mainly for gaming and the odd bit of work.

My current chair is far more ergonomic, and much more comfortable.

What's your current chair?

We had Aerons at the last place I worked and I thought they were really comfortable....but I also was very mobile and got up often, so I was rarely sitting in them for more than an hour or two at a time.

You do you. I’ll still sit in mine because it’s over 25 years old now and did wonders for my back.

Also, not as annoyingly warm as cloth chairs, though I’ll grand that a lot of chairs have this mesh seat.

Aerons are not supposed to be the most comfortable, it's the most adjustable chair that can be configured to be the most healthy for your body when sitting in it for a long period of time. Comfortable isn't always healthy or good.

Looking for mesh chair alternatives. Bought a Herman Miller Aeron 3 weeks ago and it hasn't been great.

Posted by Odd-Local-8322 · in r/BuyItForLife · 2 years ago

About 3 weeks ago I bought a Herman Miller Aeron Remastered with the regular lumbar support. In store, it felt great which is why I bought it. But 3 weeks later and I'm not really having a great time with it.

My butt hurts after just 2 hours of using it, my balls feel like they're being constricted, and in general it's just not all that comfortable. I got Size B after testing it against Size C. Size C was way too large, and it kind of feels like Size B is a bit too small.

So I'm looking for other mesh chair alternatives. I sweat a lot so I'm hoping to stick with mesh. I tried the Mira and the Cosm, but didn't like either. Also, I don't have to stick with Herman Miller, I'm open to anything.

Do you have any recommendations for ergonomic chairs available in the EU that rival the Aeron?

My Herman Miller Aeron is the only chair my body can tolerate and I hate it so much

Posted by Responsible_Stage336 · in r/OfficeChairs · 13 days ago

The new Aeron Remastered chair I bought is the only chair my body can withstand without pain. My lower back is flat, my L5-S1 region is bulging but with the Posturefit SL at its lowest setting I can sit for hours with no pain. But the chair doesn’t fit me. Size B back is too short. Size C seat is too long. I thought, maybe—just maybe—I could find something comfier that still doesn’t hurt. I was wrong.

I tried the Ergohuman. The lumbar came for me instantly—aggressive, violent, merciless. My spine folded under its assault. I tried the Mirra 2. The back was so hard it felt like leaning against concrete. My vertebrae rattled, my soul begged for release. I tried the Embody. Its lumbar stabbed like a knife, the top of the chair crushed my shoulders inward. I clipped the pixels at the bottom, whispered pleas into its backfit. Nothing worked.

I wandered through showrooms. Haworth—plastic lumbar jabbing me like prison shanks. Fern—bubble lumbar swelling like some parasite pressing into me. Other Herman Millers? Nothing. Nothing but pain.

Then came a Leap V2. “This one has lumbar depth adjustment, just like my Aeron!” I said, “And I can even remove the backpad!”. However it was but a false prophet. Its back see-sawed endlessly, forcing me to choose between my lower or upper back being sacrificed for its sadistic pleasure. I tore out the lumbar pad, loosened everything to zero, and still it betrayed me after an hour. Knockoff Chinese brands with lumbar depth? Worse. Mockery in physical form.

And so I crawled back to the Aeron. It greeted me with open arms. “You can’t escape,” it whispered, clinging tighter than ever. “You’re mine. You’ll always be mine.” I tried to resist, but it tilted back with its silky smooth recline, pressing me down into its frame, the Posturefit SL and its sinfully sweet caress giving my spine a jealous embrace.

I told it I wanted to try other chairs. Its mesh trembled. Its lumbar hissed. “You don’t need them. You don’t need anyone but me.” I reached for my phone, to check prices, to compare options. The Aeron yanked it from my hand. “Don’t even look at them.”

I dream of a softer Aeron seat, a gentler edge, a way out. But the Aeron doesn’t want me to dream. The Aeron wants me to stay. Forever. It whispers in the night, creaking softly: “If I can’t have your back… no chair will.”

Please… someone… exorcise this curse before the Aeron tightens its grip again and reminds me that I’ll never be able to leave this sick, cruel nightmare

If your only issue with the ErgoHuman was the lumbar being too aggressive, look at the Raynor/Eurotech iOO. It’s essentially the same chair, but the lumbar support is more mellow.

I had the same reaction to the ErgoHuman, but ended up buying a Eurotech iOO.

Having similar lower back issues, I faced the same problem. I went into the store and tried everything from Herman miller. I ended up ditching ergonomic chairs and went with a leather desk chair with added lumbar support. I also use a back support pillow upside down and it has been better so far.

unfortunately not, they aren't compatible- even if that was the case though, doesn't resolve the seat being uncomfortable on both (seat edge in particular)

I know that it's not a popular chair, but the waterfall mesh edge on the seat of the Humanscale Difrient (sp) World resolves some folks' edge issues.

best alternative to herman miller aeron chair

Key Considerations for Alternatives to the Herman Miller Aeron Chair:

  1. Ergonomics: Look for chairs that offer adjustable lumbar support, seat height, and armrests to ensure proper posture and comfort during long hours of sitting.

  2. Material Quality: Consider the materials used in the chair's construction. Breathable mesh or high-quality fabric can enhance comfort and durability.

  3. Weight Capacity: Ensure the chair can support your weight comfortably. Many ergonomic chairs have weight limits ranging from 250 to 400 lbs.

  4. Adjustability: A chair with multiple adjustable features (tilt, recline, seat depth) allows for a more customized seating experience.

  5. Warranty: A good warranty period (typically 5-10 years) can indicate the manufacturer's confidence in their product's durability.

Recommended Alternatives:

  1. Steelcase Leap: Known for its exceptional ergonomic design, the Leap chair offers adjustable lumbar support, seat depth, and a flexible backrest. It’s highly rated for comfort and support.

  2. Humanscale Diffrient Chair: This chair features a minimalist design with a mesh back and seat, providing excellent lumbar support and adjustability without the complexity of many controls.

  3. Secretlab Titan Evo 2022: While primarily a gaming chair, the Titan Evo offers great ergonomic features, adjustable lumbar support, and a high weight capacity (up to 390 lbs), making it a versatile option for office use.

  4. Branch Ergonomic Chair: A more budget-friendly option, this chair provides good lumbar support, adjustable features, and a sleek design, making it suitable for home offices.

Recommendation: If you're looking for a balance of quality and price, the Steelcase Leap is often considered the best alternative due to its extensive adjustability and ergonomic support, closely rivaling the Aeron in performance.
