TL;DR Six Flags Over Georgia is widely regarded as the best amusement park in Georgia, offering a solid lineup of roller coasters and rides. However, it may not match the high-end resort parks in terms of theming and food options.
Six Flags Over Georgia
Six Flags Over Georgia (SFoG) is frequently mentioned as a top choice for amusement parks in Georgia. It has a strong coaster lineup, including popular rides like Goliath, Twisted Cyclone, and Batman [2:1]
[3:3]. The park is praised for its charming atmosphere and landscaping, making visitors feel like guests rather than consumers
[2:1]. While some reviews mention issues with ride operations and food service
[2:2]
[5:3], others still consider it worth visiting for the roller coasters alone
[5:4].
Comparison to Other Parks
When compared to other Six Flags parks, SFoG is considered to be in the upper half [5:1]. However, it does not offer the same level of theming or dining options as high-end resort parks like Disney or Universal
[5:1]. For those who have visited Florida's theme parks, SFoG might be seen as a step down, but it remains a worthwhile destination for roller coaster enthusiasts
[5:1].
Nearby Attractions
An additional advantage of visiting SFoG is its proximity to Fun Spot Atlanta, which features ArieForce One, one of the best coasters in the state [1:2]
[3:3]. This makes it possible to enjoy two great parks in one trip, enhancing the overall experience for thrill-seekers.
Visitor Experiences
Many visitors have fond memories of SFoG, citing their experiences on rides like Scorcher, Mind Bender, and Monster Mansion [1:3]
[2:6]
[2:12]. Despite some operational challenges, the park continues to attract guests who appreciate its roller coasters and unique attractions
[5:3]
[5:5].
I agree this park is mad underrated, I hope it stays on the up-and-up. The fact that you can also drive half an hour to ride one of the best coasters in the world at Fun Spot is a GIGANTIC cherry on top.
Grew up riding scorcher and Goliath. Totally miss Deja vu. Rode Superman on opening day. Shoot, my first roller coaster was GASM. Will always love this park.
same same
I love SFoG - but I consider it to be my original home park. I went every year from ages 8 to 18. I freely admit the park is rather spread-out and visitors need good walking shoes.
It's funny how much better floater king Goliath is than Nitro.
I haven’t been since 2014 and I’ve been ITCHING for a return. I grew up a couple hours away and used to go almost every summer in middle/high school.
I understand the complaints some have around the park’s quality, but I’m also so hopeful given the new chain’s expressed interest in Atlanta. This park has everything it takes to become a top tier southeast park: big population center, an already great coaster lineup, more shade than most SF parks, I could go on. All it’s missing is the TLC it deserves to improve dining, cleanliness, staffing, and reputation. I’m hoping we see that in the coming years.
It’s my home park and I just want to hear others opinions.
Flags Georgia has beautiful terrain and a solid, if unremarkable ride lineup with an unusually good B&M hyper and Intamin raft ride as the standouts. Unfortunately, the park is held back, if not ruined utterly by absolutely abysmal operations in both rides and food service.
I would say that the boat style dark ride Monster Mansion, and the low-tier RMC Twisted Cyclone of similar caliber to the standouts you listed. Also calling their ride operations absolutely abysmal is a bit extreme, they are not good, but they also aren't that bad.
>absolutely abysmal operations in both rides and food service.
Classic Six Flags!
Great park, great rides. One of the most underrated and well-rounded coaster collections in the country, and they basically have no bad coasters. Acrophobia and Pandemonium are great flat rides and Monster Mansion is low key one of the most entertaining dark rides in the country.
u/brain0924 said exactly what I would have said. I'm happy it's my home park.
Rode Monster Mansion over the summer just to knock it off the list and I can't stop thinking about it lol.
Fiesta Texas is the “soon to be 8th” haha, from what I’ve heard I’m expecting it to become my favorite Six Flags park though. Great America is the other one I’m referring to. Fucking great coaster lineup and a nice park overall.
SFoG's gentle hills are a walk in the park compared to Busch Gardens Williamsburg or Dollywood.
It’s a nice park, and technically my home Six Flags Park (although 9 hours away). They have a really nice park atmosphere. Great collection of rollers coasters with Twisted Cyclone being truly elite. And Monster Mansion is a spectacular dark ride and something that I would never expect at a Six Flags Park. I love their Holiday In The Park event too.
They have an incredible atmosphere and great rides there, with Goliath being one of the best B&M hypers and twisted cyclone being amazing, but I have to put it down as the single worst park I’ve ever visited experience wise.
There’s no reason ultimate flight should have a 2.5 hour line with 12 minute dispatches. There’s no reason it should take 30 minutes to serve the three families in front of me at their cafeterias. I’ve never experienced anything even close to that level of operations. Granted, I’ve only been there one time so it might have been an outlier, but it sure seemed like these issues were not ones that would be temporary.
Goliath at Over GA didn't slap the same way for me as Goliath at La Ronde (terrible park). My favorite B&M hyper [that I've ridden] is Behemoth.
Over GA was my home park though and I would go like 30 times a season so perhaps it lost its punch.
Scorcher and Mind Bender though, both underrated 👌.
I’ve been to 7 (soon to be 8) Six Flags parks, and there’s only 2 that I really, really enjoyed, and Over Georgia is one of them. Very charming park with a SOLID lineup. Nicely landscaped and a good amount of the park’s history has been preserved, see Monster Mansion. I feel like a guest and not a consumer when I’m at Over Georgia which is more than can be said about a few of its sister parks.
Really the only nitpick I have is that there isn’t a true standout coaster. But if that’s the price to pay to have Superman, Twisted Cyclone, Goliath, Mindbender, and Dare Devil Dive in the same park, I suppose it’s worth it.
I'm new to Six Flags, and just got a pass that allows me to visit any Six Flags or Cedar Fair Park. I'm looking at taking my family down to either Six Flags over Georgia or Six Flags over Texas for a weekend in late March or April. Which is the better park or at least which do you prefer and why?
We love roller coasters and visit Cedar Point often.
I’m on Team SFFT here. SFoG is my home park, and I love it, but SFFT is in a whole different league. I recently visited SFFT and can’t wait to get back there. I also recently visited SFoT and did not enjoy that park as much as the other two, although I do like Shockwave and Mr. Freeze (when it’s working).
If my choices were only SFoT and SFoG, Georgia would be the better choice in your opinion?
Yes, I prefer SFoG. Home park advantage. Both have good rides, but I’ve had much better luck at SFoG than SFoT getting on rides.
SFOG is the park to visit this year with a new coaster opening. The coaster lineup is already slightly better with Goliath, TC, and Batman being standouts. Arieforce One is not far away and nearly always a walk on if you really like RMCs.
SFOT will be an improved park a year or two from now though. Freeze (backwards) is my favorite coaster from the two parks. I do think the theming is slightly better compared to SFOG as well though that's not saying much.
Like others have said, you should highly consider SFFT. Very unique and nice park. The 2 RMCs there are top coasters. San Antonio also has Sea World, the riverwalk, and other things of interest.
If you're going to Texas select Fiesta Texas, hands down. One of the only SF parks that Management puts effort into keeping it a great experience for the visitors.
Also San Antonio is a tourist destination, the lodging and restaurant choices near the park alone make it the best choice. Go to Delias and get some tamales, it's close to the park.
SFOG has very limited lodging and SFOT is a series of parking lots and limited restaurant choices, it's near The Rangers and Cowboys parks so it's very much business and sports not really a destination
Fiesta Texas is better to me
OG and OT are both good. As others said, FT is better. OT is year-round operations, so I would expect to see more rides open there than at OG since OG will be just opening at that point.
Hey! So it's basically like the title says, I'm a huge roller coaster enthusiast and recently have been able to travel to parks like the Florida parks and Cedar Point. Since I've only ridden 47 coasters, there are still so many top-tier rides I desperately want to go on. Recently, an opportunity came up to do a trip to a theme park, but I'm not sure which one. The coaster I want to get on the most is Pantherion at Kings Dominion, but I would also love to get on Fury 325 and Wildcat's Revenge. If anyone can help me decide which park I should choose that has a top-10 American coaster or a great lineup, I would really apretiate it
Kings Island has a really solid line up as well and is a worth a visit. The Beast is the longest wooden coaster in the world. Diamondback and Orion are really smooth and have great airtime. Mystic Timbers is really fun, Banshee is a great invert. Then there's the Racer, Invertigo, and Adventure Express. Also three kids/family coasters. Their ride ops there are great as well.
I would suggest turning it into a road trip and hitting up multiple parks within a specific region
This!
KD and Caro are not that far apart and, especially if you hit them both mid-week, are single-day parks. Pick the one that's closest to you, do it, drive an hour and a half or so, spend the night, do the other park the next day and then head home.
If you need to fly, fly into Charlotte and home from Richmond.
Bonus: if you have more than 2 days, BGW is a quick drive from KD and also has excellent coasters.
Isn’t Carowinds to Kings Dominion a 5 hour drive?
I just did KD and BGW since they are an hour apart, and that's a 1-2 combo I highly recommend. Especially if you're familiar with BGT out in Florida.
Hershey Park has a great lineup.
Vital question: where do you live?
Is it worth even trying to go? The reviews recently look horrible. But I really wanna ride roller coasters.
I think every amusement park is worth a visit. I've heard mixed reviews about this park, but even the bad reviews don't make me not want to visit.
I just went recently because I was in the area and I needed to kill some time before my flight home. Typical Six Flags park. Some really great coasters but the wait times are obscene and there either aren’t enough workers to keep thing efficient or they don’t run enough trains. I’ve ver seen a Six Flags park have all their coasters open at any given time so that puts more pressure on the ones that are open too. And a lot of rides weren’t running all their trains. So it wasn’t a horrible way to spend my time or money being that I was there anyhow and was looking for something to do, but I’d be disappointed if I had gone out of my way to visit the park and had high hopes.
Definitely worth it. Some great roller coasters there.
Is Mindbender still open?
If so, then the answer is yes.
So, if you are familiar with Six Flags as a chain, Over Georgia is securely in the upper half of those parks. But yes, if your only experience happens to be with the Florida collection of parks, then it's going to be a major step down from the high-end resort parks like Disney and Universal down to the High quality theme parks like Busch Gardens and Seaworld almost to a spot right above a FunSpot. Don't expect elaborate themes and amazing food choices. The biggest complaints I have about Six Flags is that they are always jammed packed with these insane lines for food and rides that makes the entire park feel like you are waiting. That seems to be getting solved with a new pricing structure that will bring them back up around prices of the competition and make it so not everyone in a hour radius feels comfortable buying season passes and going almost every week. As for the coasters, they are safe; they are incredibly enjoyable, and they have 11 of them.
Cedar Point
If you're a coaster enthusiast, this is, indeed, the only answer.
Only answer
Knoebels Grove. World class roller coaster, wonderful kiddie rides, cheap food or bring-your-own-picnic, tree-shaded, nice pool, free entertainment, family-owned. A throw-back oasis.
Free Admission! Just walk right in. Pay (a reasonable price) by the ride or get a wristband, but if you just want to sit there and watch others ride, it's free.
Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio…”Rollercoaster Capital of the World.” If coasters are your thing, this is a great place to go! Nowadays, there could be other theme parks that have more coasters altogether, but Cedar Point seems to break some kind of record with each new rollercoaster they introduce, in terms of speed & height, for example.
Lots of other rides & stuff to do there, too.
Is it worth going all the way to Ohio from the West Coast just for that?
I’m not a theme park enthusiast, so I would say no…But for those that are, there are lots who actually have. I live in Ohio & have been to both Cedar Point & Kings Island, & I would personally choose Cedar Point.
Depending on your personal interests…. Ohio and cedar point itself is within 3hrs of some pretty awesome other stuff and places.
Ohio has all 4 seasons in a single 12 hour period sometimes
We also have every geographical topography you can think of
Home of some hall of fames
Just some bad ass shit if you are trying to compare what it has to offer to other places
Yes
It subjectively doesn't have the biggest and best rides, not even in the same city, but Disney World Florida is a whole different level. The sheer size, iconic rides, theming, etc... I know Universal has great theming, too, and some noteworthy iconic rides of their own, but the massive size difference tips it in Disney Worlds favour.
You misspelled Tokyo Disneyland and Disneysea.
Georgia Goldrusher was a pleasant surprise! It became one of my favorites at Six Flags Over Georgia.
Fun ride but that queue is BRUTAL on a hot summer day
Did you get a lot of spinning? That makes all the difference between the ride being meh and being great imo.
I did get a good spin, but it was the airtime that made it for me.
I’m with you. I actually preferred it earlier this year when it didn’t spin because I could choose where to sit: facing at one end to view the spike or facing perpendicular to get lateral airtime.
They really got the spinning worked out this last visit I had a couple weeks ago.
I really feel like my experience was different than everything else I was severely underwhelmed which was dissapointing
This ride caught me by surprise. Figured it would be a one and done, after my first ride I just kept buying one shots to keep lapping it. It’s a ton of fun. Beat out flash at GAd this year in my rankings
Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio is arguably the best roller coaster park in the world, I grew up about 2 hours away so we'd go there a few times every year. It's right on Lake Erie, the drive there was through farm country and along the lake and small towns, just an idyllic All-American place for many reasons.
Not anymore. Six Flags Magic Mountain In Los Angeles beats it now. Been to both.
Great call. Kings Dominion is not far away and has a much better selection of roller coasters but Busch Gardens is a far nicer park. And the enjoyment of coasters and beer cannot be understated. Really enjoy the German beer hall in particular.
Dollywood, Gatlinburg, TN. It's insanely cheap for what it provides and the atmosphere is amazing.
We loved Dollywood. Great customer service (like we used to get at WDW) the food for theme park food was pretty good and my kids loved the coasters, good shows and it's built into the mountain side (much like Bush Gardens VA)
Grew up less than two hours away, right on the other side of the National Park. My best friend’s family kept season passes and brought me along pretty frequently and we always had a blast. After moving away, I always thought it was probably a rinky-dink little place that I remembered fondly just because of nostalgia. Went last year after close to 20 years for the first time as an adult and was impressed. Dollywood punches way above its weight for a relatively small regional amusement park. Atmosphere is great, it’s kept very clean, food is way above par for amusement park food, staff is friendly, and the rides are great! Some of the newer coasters have pretty innovative designs beyond just “UP DOWN FAST” and many take full advantage of the unique mountain landscape. There’s no alcohol sales in the park which I’m sure some people would count as a point against it, but I think it reduces some of the trashy guest behavior you deal with at other parks. I mostly compare it to Carowinds (the other park I’ve been to most often) which is kind of a dump in comparison.
Definitely. It's not the biggest. But I've had worse times in Universal Studios and Disneyland. Id rather have a great time in a less crowded place with better food and cheaper prices, then a huge place with better rides and crowded with too many people.
Disneyworld in Florida. It's also the only amusement park I've ever been to. When I was 4. Trips like that were too expensive to do more than once.
Went there in August 2019, it sucked. It was way too expensive. Bought a park pass but the park pass didn’t include the water park. Ate at two restaurants an Asian and one on the African themed area, both cost about $160 + for three people. A hamburger alone was $15.00. Was only able to ride 3 rides the first two days. I suggest going to Universal instead.
It's sadly gone downhill a bit. We went last year on an average day in summer and half.of everything is closed, assuming to save on staffing. It's becoming increasingly imbalanced in terms of ride locations as well.
I went with a large group on a day when the morning was solid downpour. Not long after we got there, it stopped but it was enough that we had the park effectively to ourselves - we all got to ride, front seat, on every roller coaster there, multiple times. It is one of my single fondest memories!
This is my answer too, but I haven’t been in 20 years or so, but I love the ersatz Euro theming and the rides are fun. And it’s a nicely shaded park too.
Does anyone remember the cartoon map from like the 70's that you got when you visited the place? I had one of those on my walls and loved looking at it. Also... loved the parachute rides! The Great Gasp? Can't remember the name.
My parents: Ahh, Monster Plantation, a nice air conditioned ride to get out of the heat. Its Henson, my kids love the Muppets.
Me (at 6 years old): THEY SAID DON'T GO INTO THE SWAMP? WHY ARE WE GOING INTO THE SWAMP?!?! THIS IS A BAD IDEA!!
...30 some odd years later: Man, we shouldn't have gone in the swamp...
I remember Monster Plantation, and YES! The A/C!! LOL! I can REMEMBER the SMELL of that ride!!! I guess it's the A/C and the gross water!? Awwww. Memories.
Same. Hands down fave coaster there. Please tell me it’s still there
Same here. I was always afraid of roller coasters but one day I got the courage to ride it and I've loved them ever sense.
I had one day i had gotten a fast pass and the wait time was always basically instant and got to ride it 8 times. Was definitely one of my favorite rides but besides that day I can't remember a day that it wasn't broke down constantly.
When it was (rarely) operational, it was my favorite roller coaster at the park, easily. I rode it maybe twice ever, despite having season passes for Six Flags all through middle school and high school. The last time I got to ride it was on my birthday when I was in middle school (probably around 2004), I want to say in 8th grade. I was so happy, that was honestly the best birthday present I got that year was riding Deja Vu one time, front row.
That feeling of being in the front row and being pulled up backwards up the first tower, with 100% of your body weight resting on the harness and the harness alone... that was the scariest part of that ride. Like if that thing unhooked while you’re up there, there was nothing between you and the ground. Terrifyingly awesome.
It was the first roller coaster in the world with three inversions.
By far, the scariest ride in Atlanta is I-285.
I-20 from Moreland to Six Flags is a close second.
When I was a kid that was the “big, new” rollercoaster. We’d stand in line for 2 hours. God, I’m old.
Pretty well rounded and very fun park. Good theming on themed coasters, and rides. My favorite coaster had to have been Goliath. Love that coaster in the back row, with nice airtime and speed. Georgia goldrusher was a very fun ride, that packed an unexpected punch. Didn't have spinning on for any of my rides, but the water effects were cool. The redone theming on batman was very nice, from the smoke to the lights. Tried monster mansion, which was very cool with all of the animatronics and stuff.Overall a pretty good park, with some good coasters and flats. About an 8 out of 10 from me.
Goliath is my #3 coaster, but god I hate the new paint job, the orange was so much more vibrant.
Does anybody have a favorite seat on Goliath?
Visiting Friday!
Goliath is a back seat ride for sure, the intensity of the airtime in the final hills is way stronger back there, as is the positives in the helix. If you’re sensitive to “B&M rattle,” it is much smoother in the middle seats, but I like the left wing seat for how you hang towards the ground in the helix
My guy you were not lying!!
Back and either of the (wings) outside seating were my favorites!
My favorite is the front left seat
From my understanding, Goldrusher is not operating to its full potential cuz sfog is working with Intamin to resolve the issue that will have the ride operate as it is intended by waiting on some parts to fix the the fins that causes the gondolas to spin.
It's so much better now, imo atleast
I agree. As much I loved the original and vibrant blue and orange colors, the repaint is a nice change and also look better in real life than how it was shown in the animation.
Yes for sure. I feel like it'll be so much better with spinning.
Went Monday it was completely dead. Had so much fun a really solid park in my opinion with a great variety on coaster type
For sure! I was there Monday aswell. The colder weather and a bit of rain definitely kept crowds away.
