TL;DR While Kansas itself does not have a large, renowned amusement park like Kings Island or Cedar Point, there are several parks and attractions nearby that offer great experiences for families and thrill-seekers alike. For those willing to travel a bit further, Adventureland in Iowa is a popular choice.
Local Parks and Attractions
Kansas City offers a variety of parks with different attractions suitable for families. Antioch Park is frequently recommended for its playgrounds and scenic views [3:3]
[4:3]. Penguin Park and Roanoke Park are also favorites among locals, offering unique play structures and amenities
[3:1]
[3:2]. These parks may not be traditional amusement parks but provide excellent outdoor activities and play areas for children.
Adventureland in Iowa
Adventureland, located in Altoona, Iowa, is a notable amusement park within driving distance from Kansas. It features rides like Monster and Dragon Slayer and is praised for being a good family park with potential [5]. Visitors have enjoyed their time at Adventureland, noting it as a worthwhile destination for those serious about amusement park visits
[5:2].
Nearby Options
For those willing to travel outside of Kansas, Kings Island in Ohio is highly regarded as one of the best amusement parks in the U.S. [1:1]
[2:1]. Although not in Kansas, it is mentioned frequently due to its impressive lineup of rides and well-maintained facilities
[2:7]. Another option is Lost Island in Iowa, which can be combined with a visit to Adventureland for a full weekend trip
[5:1].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While Kansas may not have a large-scale amusement park, exploring local parks and considering nearby states' offerings can provide a fulfilling experience. It's important to consider travel distances and the type of park experience desired when planning your visit.
I got to go to Kings Island for the first time in my life on July 22, 2025. I’ve always heard great things about this park and it absolutely did not disappoint. What an incredible park.
Park Thoughts: The atmosphere is just brilliant. The park is so well kept and every area of the park looks great. The park isn’t known for theming, but they definitely make things look good. Not to say they don’t do good theming, Adventure Port has some very nice theming and some of the coasters have good theming as well. Another thing that’s really good here is the food. I had Coney BarBQue and the chicken pwas genuinely delicious. Overall, the Kings Island is a phenomenal park with great atmosphere and is just really nice to walk around. If there’s one bit pick I have, the area where Vortex once was is a bit of a dead zone right now. Hopefully it’s replaced by something great soon. Anyways, the best part of the park are the rides, and here are my thoughts on them.
Diamondback (1x): Waited over an hour for this and the line never really died down the rest of the day. Kings Islands ops are really damn good but it was just really busy. Anyways, Diamondback is an excellent hyper. It’s glass smooth, has a long ride, and great floater airtime. Probably my second favorite hyper behind Raging Bull.
Mystic Timbers (2x): An incredible wooden coaster. It was only my third ever GCI, after Lightning Racer and Wildcat, but this is miles ahead of those two. Just an out of control ride through the woods with some insane ejector pops. My second favorite wooden coaster ever behind El Toro.
Racer (1x): A good classic racing wooden coaster. There just isn’t anything like a classic woodie. The airtime is decent, with one really good pop, and it’s decently smooth except for one spot at the bottom of the first drop. Just pure fun.
Orion (3x): My first ever B&M Giga did not disappoint. This thing is awesome. The drop is amazing and the sheer speed of the ride is insane. The best part is easily that speed hill, but that weird upward helix is really forceful as well. Just an amazing ride that I’m still deciding if I like Mystic more or not.
Adventure Express (1x): It’s janky, it’s weird, and it’s paced unusually. But that’s what makes it great. I’m a sucker for old Arrows, especially mine trains, and this ride left me just cackling from enjoyment. Adventure Express is genuinely a really fun ride. And that ending is iconically weird.
Queen City Stunt Coaster (1x): A solid family launch coaster. The theming is cool, and the layout has some good moments. The first launch is fun and that upward helix really pulls some g’s. The indoor part is pretty cool too. My main issue is that the trains are just really tight. But that’s an issue with most Premier coasters.
Windseeker (1x): Despite this being really damn tall, Windseeker is almost relaxing in a way. The views are excellent and the cycle lasts a long time. I like these rides and I kinda wish more parks besides Cedar Fair ones bought them.
Flight of Fear (1x): Longest line of the day at around 75 minutes or so. And the ride was pretty good. The theming in the queue is really cool and while the layout doesn’t have much theming besides darkness, it’s still really fun. The launch is punchy and those first inversions are pretty intense. The middle of the ride is pretty slow thanks to the mid course, but the ending gets its speed back and ends with a bang. Like Stunt Coaster, the trains aren’t great, and I wouldn’t wait that long for it again, but it’s still fun.
Banshee (1x): An excellent invert with a rather unique layout. Each inversion is either very floaty or very forceful. Especially that pretzel knot. The best part of the ride is probably that last inline twist, it’s just so unique for a ride like this to have that and it has great hang time. The vests are decent but I do prefer the over the shoulder restraints. There’s also a bit of a rattle but nothing major. And excellent ride that’s among my favorite inverts with Raptor and Talon.
The Bat (1x): A secluded but fun ride through the woods. These Arrow suspended coasters are rare nowadays but they’re quite fun. It is pretty short unfortunately. But that’s alright , considering the layout has some great swinging and pacing. Much better than Iron Dragon across the state.
The Beast (1x): I only got one ride on this, but what a ride it was. Towards the end of the night, in near total darkness. I’ve always heard about how great night rides on the Beast are and oh boy did it live up to the hype. This ride is just nuts. The way it feels like it’s getting faster, how it feels like it never ends, the fact you can’t see a damn thing, and that goddamn second drip and helix are the stuff of legends. This thing is incredible, and also pretty dang smooth.
Coasters I Missed: Invertigo, Woodstock’s Air Rail, Snoopy’s Soap Box Racers, Woodstock Express, Great Pumpkin Coaster.
Invertigo was closed all day, which was a shame because it looks quite fun. And I didn’t have the time to do the coasters in Planet Snoopy, although Snoopy’s and Woodstock Express look fun. Drop Zone was also closed unfortunately. But I still got to do all the main coasters I could do. This park I brilliant and so are the rides.
This writeup makes me want to visit again so badly 😭 Kings Island is easily what my mind defaults to as the ideal amusement park. Some home bias despite living 7 hours away now. It's not quite the best in any particular category except maybe kids area, but it's reasonably strong in just about every category, including some of the more mundane things i.e. ride operations, food & drink, park layout, etc. It's also an incredible value for a one-time visit compared to the Central Florida parks. I'm still holding out for one more big coaster to replace Vortex before I come back 👀
Yeah, same for me. I was born in the 90s but looking back, KI was actually better than CP for a brief period in terms of coasters (once Vortex opened until Raptor and Mantis opened, debatably only until Mean Streak opened). KI never really joined the coaster wars once they kicked off aside their attempt with Son of Beast, so they quickly fell off there. But KI has always been top tier in theming for a regional park.
I also visited Kings Island for my first time on July 22nd, but back in 2021.
Honestly, Kings Island is one of the best amusement parks in the U.S. hands down! The park is absolutely beautiful and has the best operations in the amusement industry. I absolutely love Diamondback and Mystic Timbers, and the park really does have a solid lineup for a park that's not Cedar Point or Magic Mountain.
—TL;DR at the end of post—
Originally, this park wasn’t even on our radar. Our Ohio trip was planned around Cedar Point, where we’d be staying Thursday through Saturday. But with an extra day to spare, and Cedar Point being closed on Wednesday, we made a last minute decision to visit Kings Island. I’m so glad we did. It honestly worked out perfectly, especially with how close both parks are to each other.
This park completely won me over. It’s one of the best amusement parks I’ve ever been to. It was clean, friendly, scenic, and packed with great rides. I don’t have a single bad thing to say about it. We got to the park about two hours after opening due to some delays, but the crowds were super manageable and the rainy, overcast weather gave the whole day a really cozy vibe.
I was able to hit almost all of the major rides. Any ride I missed was down I believe. Ride ops were incredible as well. Here’s what I rode:
• Banshee
• Diamondback (x2)
• Mystic Timbers (x3)
• Orion (x3)
• The Beast
My Rankings:
Mystic Timbers – Completely caught me off guard. I went in with no expectations and it completely delivered. Fast, aggressive pacing, relentless transitions, and a lot of surprising ejector. Might be the most intense ride in the park. First GCI I’ve ever been on. It’s now my second favorite wooden roller coaster after El Toro
Diamondback – Classic B&M hyper with great sustained floater airtime. Not much to say here. Think it’s my favorite B&M hyper now over Nitro and my favorite hyper period
The Beast – We rode it in the front and that second lift hill / helix section had me laughing the entire time. It felt like we were falling forever into the void. Calling this ride a journey is an understatement. Top 3 wooden coaster for me after Mystic Timbers and El Toro. Insane how this park has two of the best wooden works of art in the world
Orion – Solid giga and my first by B&M. Smooth and fast with a killer first drop in the back. I actually felt the speed more in the back row throughout the layout, but the front row was insane with the wind noise. Top 3 giga I’ve been on after Pantherian and Millenium Force
Banshee – Decent invert with some unique elements. Noticeably rough. There’s a B&M invert further north that outclasses this one easily
Even with limited time (just one day compared to three at Cedar Point), I’m honestly torn on which park I prefer. Kings Island left that strong of an impression. Beautiful, well-run, and full of charm. I’ll definitely be returning next time I’m in Ohio.
TL;DR: First time at Kings Island after a last-minute change of plans and it might be better than Cedar Point. Mystic Timbers is insane. Diamondback = smooth airtime. The Beast is a chaotic trek through the woods of Ohio. Orion’s drop in the back row is elite. Banshee’s fun with a present rattle. Clean park, chill vibes, excellent ride ops, 10/10 day.
Glad you enjoyed your visit! We're no cedar point when it comes to new investments, but you can really tell the workers and higher up management care about the park and show their pride of the park. The park only gets better in the fall and winter for their seasonal events, though extra crowds come with it.
I 100% felt that. You can tell the staff truly care about both the guests and the park itself. It honestly makes the experience that much more special. I love supporting parks like this where you can feel they’re genuinely trying to give you an amazing experience! I bet both seasons are beautiful there too and I’m definitely investing in a FastLane upon my return
Should get investment similar to Cedar Point but Cedar F won’t allow it. KI is top 4 in attendance in Flags portfolio.
Unfortunately I did not :( the park closed at 7pm and sunset was still about an hour out. I was a lil bummed because I kept telling my cousin in line that a night ride on The Beast would probably shoot it way up in my rankings. Even during the day it was chaotic in the best way. I can only imagine what it’s like flying through those woods in total darkness!
Glad you had such a wonderful first trip! You really should try to come back in the fall for Haunt. Same ticket for daytime as evening. Our fall foliage is unmatched and during Haunt the entire park is filled with fog machines plus the natural river fog. It gets crazy thick and spooky and most walking paths are themed scare zones. You’ll definitely want FastLane then because regular waits can peak at 3 hours. Night rides are great at KI but Haunt night rides are even crazier.
I did haunt last season and it was my favorite day at an amusement park ever. Each coaster delivers something exciting and unique, and the park is just so well-run. My fastlane wristband flew off on flight of fear and despite the major bummer about that 2/3 through my day, I was able to snag a few skip the line passes from a park employee and had a great night! I drove 6 hours to get to Kings Island and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
If you love the park you should read about it's history. It's full of firsts in the coaster world. It's far more influential than the point.
One Could also argue that without Kings Island, Cedar Point wouldn’t exist. Even though Cedar Point is older than KI, it almost become a real estate development project for housing in the late 60s because attendance was way down, but Cedar point heard about Kings Island being built, and that prompted them to add better attractions, which got more people there, which ultimately saved the park from being bought and turned into housing and condos. .The Former GM writes about it in his book Always Cedar Point: A Memoir of the Midway.
I agree about Mystic Timbers and the Beast. Both are excellent rides and are near the top of my all time favorite coasters!
Right? Both are so fun they kinda instantly made it into my top 10 (#8 Mystic Timbers / #10 The Beast). Ohio is lucky to have them lol
https://kicentral.com/parkhistory/timeline/
Look at the coasters, what the park was intended to be and where we are today....
This link makes no mention of Vortex going out. It also doesn't go into how The Beast was manufactured and built internally or how many coasters today owe thejr existence to Dinn Corp. (Mr. DINN founded his own company that has lineage to The Gravity Group)
We are staying in Overland Park and my daughters want to go to the park to play, we don’t mind driving just want to find the absolute best park for kids that will give them plenty to play with (aged 6 and 8)
Roanoak Park is pretty wonderful.
https://kcparks.org/places/roanoke-park/ This is my daughter's favorite park. It has a zip line!
It’s an “adventure” style park with tall structures, lots of climbing stuff, a cool zip line, a genuinely fast slide and a lot of other cool details.
I recommend Antioch Park. 6501 Antioch Rd, Merriam, KS 66202
Came to post this.
Reason: They have (and recently refinished) a miniature old west style town for kids and the playground is also legit. There is a large covered area with plenty of picnic tables right next to both the playground and western town (providing a nice home base for parents to watch over their kids). The pond and walking trails also provide nice views as well. Source: live nearby, don't have kids, but worked at a daycare that went there frequently.
Roe Park has an amazing play structure that kids your age will love.
sar ko par park is pretty solid. theres a playground, a pond w/ a dragon statue, etc.
Sar ko par is solid, and then you get to swing by black dog for some hot cocoa after.
plus theres that island thing in the middle of the pond that you can walk over the rock stepping stones.
I have a 5 year old, and I feel like we've been to every park in the metro in the last few years. We're always looking for a good park, here are his favorites(he puts a priority on things to climb, FYI):
Penguin Park - https://kcparks.org/places/penguin-park/
Lea McKeighan Park - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lea-McKeighan-Park/121013074626717
Roanoke Park - https://kcparks.org/places/roanoke-park/
Meadowmere Park - http://www.grandview.org/work/city-government/parks-recreation/parks/full-parks-list/meadowmere-park
Antioch Park - https://www.merriam.org/422/Antioch-Park
I’m looking for good parks in the Kansas area. I’ve tried Shawnee Mission Park and it was amazing. Are there more parks I should know about?
Wyandotte county lake Park is pretty cool.
Yes, just make sure you go to Wyandotte County Lake Park, and not Wyandotte County Park. If the Shelters are letters, you’re in the wrong park.
Go to WYCO for the best trails around!
Overland Park Arboretum down south and Antioch Park are my favorites. Lots of trails to explore.
Loose Park is the Central Park of Kansas City
Edit: what I mean by this is loose park is the crown jewel of the parks department. They keep it spotless and impeccably maintained.
That'd be more like Swope Park. Loose is nothing like Central Park at all
If you're going off of size, Central Park is only NYC's 5th largest park; it just seems like the biggest because it's in the middle of Manhattan. If anything, I'd say Penn Valley is the closest thing we have to Central Park, based on both size and centrality.
Black Hoof, Spring through Fall is absolutely lovely. Nice trails too.
It’s a nice park. We aren’t New York lol
It's fantastic unless we've had a bunch of rain haha. I used to go out there frequently in high school and remember it being closed a few times because the river had gotten too high. There was a major flood around that time (mid/late 2000s) and the whole thing was underwater for weeks.
I think the trains are part of the charm but they are pretty pretty pretty close.
Damn, I too hate trails in my parks.
My weekend trip to Iowa started in Altoona for Adventureland. I was aware of Monster and Dragon Slayer’s existence, and had probably heard the name Adventureland passively within the community, but not in any capacity that it stayed with me— that is, until my boss who lives in Iowa discussed Adventureland as a means of connecting with me. It was then that this park really hit my radar and was a place I wanted to try and hit this year as I’ve started to get more serious with my hobby; finally being old enough and having just enough money to do so.
I arrived at rope drop, as I often have this year, and immediately made my way to Monster to get the second ride of the day. Something about me is that as an enthusiast I mainly prefer floater airtime, and speed, hangtime just hasn’t really done it for me; I was underwhelmed by Copperhead strike, the el Loco model didn’t do it for me, and the hangtime elements on RMCs were never the highlights. Monster’s hangtime made me a believer. The ride expertly balances fast whippy transitions, with drawn out moments of hangtime that give such a wild sensation. Each element was so weird in the best way, the finnish loop is fantastic, the immelman is profiled so sharply that it doesn’t feel real, and the trim before the wave makes the wave (the element just before the corkscrew finale) the best part of the ride for me, the way you take it slow enough that it gives sideways airtime has to be what I imagine west coast racers first element feels like. Nowhere to go but down from here but that was A- OK because how can you beat near perfection.
Next on my to-do was Flying Vik- 45 minute wait for a kiddie coaster? Yah I think I’ll skip for now and check out phoe- phoenix is not operating yet… oh boy, but it wasn’t a long wait before it was operational… yeah this is basically laff trakk but outside. I am not a big fan of the Maurer spinners I much prefer Gertslauer, I don’t know why but they just don’t hit for me? This one continued that pattern. They aren’t terrible but they just… I don’t know don’t hit.
After Phoenix was underground. I was actually really looking forward to this one, expecting a classic dark ride coaster like Blazing Fury or the old fire in the hole— I KIND OF got that experience. I will start by saying it has a lot of charm and definitely hits the same nostalgia spot as the previously mentioned rides… but it was definitely missing something. Using gravity to take you through the whole ride, you reach two decently tall chain lifts on your journey and then it slowly sloowwwwly desceneds down it to traverse the experience. There is no real drop, and yes I get it, it’s not going to be some big crazy ride, it’s not skull mountain or Mummy, but I was expecting at least one medium drop LIKE Blazing Fury or Fire in the Hole, and it did make the layout a bit underwhelming. For a dark ride very classic, very fun; as a coaster? Much to be desired.
Okay now that I hit those two time for Flying Viki- 60 Minutes!??? Okay let’s just head to Tornado, Dragon slayer, and Outlaw, then hit Flying Viking after dinner time when most families will have left. So Tornado was next. I got back row and I saw there was Buzz Bars! Yes! If only this could have saved the experience for me. As the Train dispatched the ride operator, who I since learned is a legend, would yell excitedly “TORNADO!” And it really hyped up the experience. The ride itself was… another story. As Cobb coasters do, the second hill was almost too tall for the coaster to traverse and required anti rollbacks, so the first drop was fun and then it lost momentum; after this everything went to hell in a hand-basket for me. Every valley slammed me violently back into my seat, every slight angle change sent me slamming into the side of the car, and the return trip ohhhh the return trip. I don’t expect classic wooden coasters to be smooth, and I feel like saying the word rattle gives the wrong image of what happens. This isn’t like a B&M rattle, and it isn’t like shaking side to side on the track? More like the way the wheels rode on the track made it feel like your butt was smacking against every crossbeam lightly and literally made a rattle sound. Not rough per say, but slowing the ride down and felt like a somewhat uncomfortable massage chair.
I was told that Dragon Slayer was the best of the 4D free-spins, and outside of the Joker clone at my home park of Six Flags Great America, these never did much for me so I was excited to see them at their full potential. I started with Squire side and already this was a wild and fun experience. Rocking side to side before one big flip it just kind of worked for me. But knight side is easily where this shines. Once I got off the knight side I knew it was my second favourite free-spin, not a high bar but it reached it.
Outlaw was next. Tucked away in the back of the park near the entrance to the water park is a small wooden coaster that looks like it wants to be a GCI so bad. I got front row on this one and whoa! I don’t know if I just got lucky with my experience on Outlaw but I found it fast, smooth, and fun. Good airtime pops, great laterals, and Buzzbars yet again! Outlaw quickly cemented itself as number 2 in the park for me.
After Outlaw I returned to ride Monster again and it was even better the second time! At this point it was roughly around 2:20 PM, I wanted to stay to experience Monster at night because I knew it had a crazy light package so I has 6 more hours before sundown. I stopped to get lunch, and then did something I haven’t really done in a long time, I rode the flat rides. Adventureland’s flatrides were descent, nothing mind blowing but fun, and I forgot how much I loved the tilt-a-whirl.
Finally the line for Flying Viking was short and I reached Coaster Completion for the day on a descent but not mind blowing family coaster. After that I rode Monster a third time and while I loved it even more, I knew I was starting to feel dehydrated and losing vision on the ride. I asked for a water cup and they gave me a full cup, with water, and ice, for free. Oh man that water hit the spot. Two cups later and it was starting to get darker.
I decided to ride Dragon Slayer a second time, not yet satisfied with my number of flips. This was the move because on my third time I flipped so much more than I ever have. It was insane and finally, as I experienced the full potential, I understood. The new king of 4D free-spins for me had appeared and I just couldn’t stop smiling.
Once I got off Dragon Slayer it was starting to get dark enough that by the time I got through Monster’s line it would be a night ride. Front row, night ride on Monster was the stuff of legends. Each time I got to ride this coaster was better than the last, and the night time experience was so magical it has to be experienced. Easily my number three night ride behind Beast and Outlaw Run.
Overall, this park has a lot going for it, some good charm, a classic theme park vibe, and a descent top three with a standout in Monster. I think this and Kennywood have the most potential with the new ownership at Herschend and can’t wait to see what they add. No Herschend park before the merger didn’t have an RMC so I’m hoping that both Adventureland and Kennywood get one because it would really round out both the parks lineup. A must-do experience in the midwest and please check out Lost Island an hour away in Waterloo while you are there!
When did you go? I was there Saturday 8/16.
That’s the day! I was there from rope drop to about 9pm, I was in grey cargon pants and a fury 325 shirt and usually holding my phone cuz I like to document my trips
I went to lost island in the morning and arrived to Adventureland around 4ish. I definitely didn’t see you unfortunately, I for sure would’ve noticed a Fury 325 shirt.
Had a spur of the moment trip to a few parks in the northeast/midwest and just wanted to throw together a few pictures I took and mention a few things I liked from the parks I visited.
Kennywood
Six Flags Darien Lake
Waldameer
Cedar Point
King’s Island
I’m always pleasantly surprised when someone has a good time at Darien, my home park. The ops are terribly slow so a weekday usually gives a better experience. Viper was my first invert coaster too many decades ago. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I have a hot take in that I think sirens curse is number two in the park. Just the definition of pure fun along with having great airtime, unique elements, and being incredibly comfortable
Diamondback is truly elite, my #3 favorite coaster of all time. Used to be #2 but Voyage took that spot this year. The airtime is insane and it remains my favorite in the park over Orion for that reason.
TIL that this roller coaster was sold to Wonderland Amusement Park in Amarillo, TX and is still operating today.
Credit to source who developed a computer simulation: https://rctgo.com/downloads/view/nightmare-boblo-island.16398
Huge roller coaster enthusiast here! Nightmare was my very first roller coaster! I was either 6 or 7 years old, so this would have been 1991 or 1992. It was the only coaster I was tall enough to ride and I had so much fun that it sparked a passion I still have all these years later. Man, I could experience it again.
YES omg I was always so excited. My mom doesn't like roller coasters and my brother was still tiny so it was just me and my dad and we LOVED it
I wish I could remember anything from my visit to Boblo Island as a small child, aside from the boat ride there.
Wild use for the former dance hall that still stands on Boblo Island. Hard to believe that people used to just go out and swing dance all night to big bands.
I loved Boblo growing up! The boat ride rocked and you could run around like the little idiots we were, on the boat! 6th grade did a school trip there!
Had a seagull shit on my on the ride over lol still ended up having fun
My dad and I just spent by far our longest day in a theme park since I got into the hobby. From 10am to 11pm, 13 hours of straight coaster riding with just an hour total of food breaks. My god. This first visit to the park did things to me.
Operations were amazing. It was packed to hell and back but the lines were moving fast. These 40-60 minute lines could've easily ballooned into 3 hours if the ride ops weren't out there killing it with 3 trains on most rides. Lines also got much more tolerable after 7pm and I even got a singular walk on on adventure Express, most other lines being 20-30 minutes at that point.
Food was great, Miami River Brewhouse slapped, best theme park burger I've ever had. Blue ice cream was an iconic treat. Panda Express for dinner was quick and what you'd expect.
People were lovely. I made a new friend on the beast and everyone was friendly and chatty with my dad and I in line.
The coaster lineup is phenomenal. Without Steel Vengeance it would top cedar point, imo. Smooth, well maintained, great rides from top to bottom, with even the worst being kinda alright. With one very blue exception.
This park was amazing, as everyone has told me it would be. A truly great coaster collection, amazing vibes, and great operations despite the crowd levels, love love love!!!
Now it's time to talk credits! I rode 15 coasters, picking up 12 new credits, and only skipping a few kids coasters. Here's the breakdown:
Orion: My final North American giga, and an underrated wrap up to the collection for now! My morning ride in the back row was whippy and floaty, just like a baby Fury. At night, we rode in the rain and it stung so bad I had to close my eyes, which consequently made the ride absolutely insane, and every drop hit like a truck, might have to close my eyes more often on coasters. Also it's the best giga in Ohio ;)
Diamondback: Better than Orion, not a hot take I feel. Every single hill gave amazing floater and not a single element felt too slow or forceless. Great positive Gs in the valleys as well. The drop off the midcourse gave insane airtime and the final splashdown was like Apollos finale on crack. Love it. Maybe new top 15 material.
Banshee: This is my new favorite invert. If montu is the perfect whippy invert, this is the perfect graceful invert. Every inversion was smooth, filled with positives, and some even had hang time which was a wonderful surprise. I do not like B&M OSTRs, they're only a few shakes better than slcs for me, so every other invert has that going against it, but not banshee. This was my dad's favorite ride in the park.
Mystic Timbers: I didn't really understand this on my first go. Aside from lightning racer and invadr, this was my first big GCI, and I couldn't get what it was going for. I rode Phoenix for the first time last year and El Toro this year, so I was under the impression that elite woodies thrived on ejector airtime. And mystic timbers just has none. On my second ride I understood why. Timbers is every other great thing about wooden coasters. Laterals, speed, whip, and it's the top of its class in all those categories. Full on airtime hills would've slowed down the breakneck pacing and changed the insanity of the ride.
The Beast: Daytime - rough and weird, but it felt great to ride a legendary coaster and fly through the woods . The length is truly incredible, and the final helix slaps
Nighttime - A religious experience and probably the most fun I've ever had since I got into coasters in 2022. It was still mostly the same ride, but the sense of speed in the dark made it feel like the fastest coaster I'd ever ridden, and the pitch black tunnels felt otherworldly. This is a vibe thing though, and the way everyone was cheering and screaming and hyping it up elevated a great night ride to a legendary one. Also shoutout to Anya if you're reading this, it was an honor to experience night beast with you. Stuff like this and the infectious positive energy of this community is why I love coasters so goddamn much.
That's the top 5. I have less to say about the rest.
The Bat: Crazy fun, just not quite as good as vortex at cw. I adore the location and the first drop into the valley is quite an experience.
Racer: A great classic woodie! For some reason this one is way better than kings dominion's, I got some genuinely solid floater in the first half.
Adventure Express: 2025 is the year of me appreciating arrow mine trains. I believe I've done the 3 best in the country this year with dahlonega, runaway mine train, and this one, with this being at the absolute top. Great theming and a nice whippy layout, even some good pops of airtime. Very cute ride.
Queen City Stunt Coaster and Flight of Fear: now that I've done all of these clones I can safely say I'm glad they only infested 3 parks. They're not terrible, but man those trains suck. Premiere needs to outsource their train designs, they've never been able to do it well. These were my dad's least favorite rides today.
Snoopys racing railway: cute and fun, fun and cute :) Love the peanuts theming and the ride was glass smooth. Thoosies don't skip it, it's got just enough force to be a great family-kids ride.
Invertigo: I caught myself trying to talk down my real feelings about this ride bc of the general consensus among thoosies. Fuck this ride lol. Immediate bad vibes with the weird prison door airgates and awkward face off gimmick. The patch of land was unusually trashy and gross for a cedar fair park too. This thing combines the worst aspects of boomerangs and slcs to make for a nightmare coaster. Headbanging, jerky transitions, hard to brace while going backwards. This ride needs to hurry up and die. I would say never again but this will be gone by the time I manage to get out here again.
Go to Kings Island y'all!! I'm sure you don't need to hear it from me, this park is famous for a reason.
This parks ops, rides and overall atmosphere makes virtually every other park seem like a crappy six flags park
Absolutely love it.
Their later operating hours make it even better. Nothing like being there from opening to close. You can easily spend half a day at the water park and still get a "full" day at the dry park
This being my home park kinda sucks.
I’m never impressed with other parks hours or dispatches anymore.
My home park is Cedar Point, but we make it to KI sometimes, and I get to Universal Orlando whenever I can. All 3 are fantastic at ride ops.
Went to Six Flags Over Georgia recently (my first Six Flags since Geauga Lake shut down) and it took 2-3 minutes to dispatch most rides, and 5 minutes for the standing ride. It was so frustrating! I at least understood the lag on Arieforce One, because that's a fucking Go Kart place that happens to have a coaster. But a full park having that kind of delay is ridiculous.
...I am completely spoiled.
Very true. I'm always finding myself frustrated with ops at other parks and end up having to remind myself that ops outside of KI aren't necessarily awful so much as KIs is just exceptionally good. It conditions you to expect way too much when you travel to new parks. Although there are some genuinely terrible ops at some parks like BGT, SWO and HP.
Kings Island is absolutely goated. Underrated in my opinion. The operating staff is super efficient and plays no games when it comes to people using phones on rides. They kicked a man out of the park for using his phone on diamondback after they stopped the ride mid-way to yell at him through the speakers!! Oh and the beast is something else. Thank god I rode it after a few drinks in me.
I had a similar experience on racer 75 at KD. Cedar Fair does not mess with loose articles and I respect it
Been a passholder for years and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of a guest being kicked out over a phone. I’ve never even seen or heard of security responding to escort out at the end of a ride unless the ride op was threatened.
Last fall was the first time I heard ride ops use the speaker to request a phone be put away. You can get away with it on every ride.
I still see phones out about 50% of the time. People walking around are still being hit in the face every so often.
There’s also been a rumor that corporate got unhappy KI security was trespassing so many guests even if for reasons that clearly deserved it and to cut back on enforcement. It’s really hard to get trespassed at KI.
I'll ask the ride ops if they can turn the trains around for me too!
Every report from Kings Island I keep waiting for someone to agree with me that Orion is way better than Diamondback. Hasn’t happened yet.
It is. Diamondback is great but nothing special. Orion I came in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised
If it's any condolences I do think Orion is closer in quality to fury than most people say. Only 3 spots below diamondback in my rankings too, just behind mako and twisted timbers
HI I THINK I AM THE FRIEND YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IN LINE FOR BEAST! IT WAS REALLY GREAT TALKING WITH YOU!
I last visited Kings Island in 2016 and remembered having an incredible time, and I'm happy to say it wasn't just nostalgia! I had an even better time on this visit.
The park does pretty much everything right. The theming is surprisingly good for a park that isn't really about that and the areas are all distinct from each other and have personality. Shoutout to the operations, those ops HUSTLE and most of the major rides run three trains. It's interesting that they focus on sending trains out really fast and don't worry about empty seats, but it seems like it works better to be honest. Keeps things moving. Also, the lineup fucking rocks. They have zero duds, and I was especially impressed with their selection of family-thrill type coasters. Most parks have kiddie rides and thrill rides with not much in between, but Kings Island really covers the whole spectrum and I think that's a huge huge plus for them.
I only had two half days there and on Saturday I was waiting about an hour for all the good stuff, so I splurged on a Fast Lane wristband for Sunday. Definitely worth it if you're willing to drop the cash, I basically walked on everything except Flight of Fear.
THE RIDES:
Mystic Timbers (x4):
I'll be honest, my first ride was pretty underwhelming and I didn't get the hype, but on every consecutive ride this thing absolutely ripped through its layout. So many fun pops of airtime and it doesn't let up for a second until you hit the break run. Night rides are built different, wish I could've gotten more than one. The shed would be 10x cooler if they put it at the start.
Diamondback (x5):
The airtime on this thing is OUT OF CONTROL. Feels like you spend more time floating out of your seat than actually sitting in it, it's like five or six seconds of sustained airtime over those camelbacks. The splashdown at the end is a really striking feature, I heard so many people walking by ooh-ing and aah-ing over it. Plus I got a sweet night ride on this while the fireworks show was going off in the background. Easily the best ride in the park, B&M went stupid with this one.
Orion (x3):
I do not understand the hate for this one. It's at least as good as most B&M hypers but with an even bigger drop...what is there not to like? The airtime hits, the positive G's hit (I completely greyed out every time and no other ride in the park did that to me), and I didn't find it that short either. I feel like thoosies think if you're gonna build a giga is has to be the most groundbreaking and the most legendary or "what's the point" but like. Maybe it can just be tall.
The Racer (x2):
Far better than expected. Rides like a dream thanks to the retracking but still has that classic woodie charm. Both sides were racing on Saturday and I chose Red, and when I came back to collect my other credit on Sunday they were only running the Red side. So fuck my life I guess.
Adventure Express (x1):
You never know with these old Arrow rides if you're gonna get "janky but fun" or "God please help me" but this one definitely falls in the janky but fun category. It's like something out of Roller Coaster Tycoon. I rode it in the evening and thought the theming was especially charming with everything lit up.
Flight of Fear (x2):
Most overhated ride in the park by a mile. Yes, the restraints are ass. Yes, it comes to a complete stop halfway through the ride for some reason. Yes, the wait time is double everything else in the park. But...you literally board the ride inside a giant UFO. The theming eats, the layout is forceful and SO disorienting in the dark, and both times I got off absolutely buzzing with adrenaline, so I excuse it all.
Banshee (x2):
I don't have much to say about this one, it's just a solid B&M invert. Love the first drop and that slow zero-G roll near the end, but otherwise kind of unremarkable to me. The loop going around the lift hill is a great visual too.
The Beast (x2):
Iconic for a reason. I can't believe this thing exists, let alone that it was built like 50 years ago. It must be a nightmare to maintain. The descent into the helix where you just pick up more and more and more speed before roaring through that tunnel is like nothing I've ever experienced. It meanders a lot and isn't the most thrilling thing in the world but this ride is really something special. Super bummed I didn't get the coveted night ride, but the wait was nearly two hours and I couldn't justify it. Guess I have a reason to come back!
Queen City Stunt Coaster (x1):
Cute coaster with some surprisingly fun elements (the launch into the helix, the pitch black indoor section, the dive under the queue). None of the special effects were working when I rode it. Smooth and good for what it is.
The Bat (x1):
I like that it swings. I don't know, by the time I got on this I was exhausted and had a headache so I might be underrating it. It feels faster than it looks, and there's not very many of this model still operating so I appreciate it for that. It's an enjoyable little ride and I hope they keep it around. Also weirdly the only coaster with no Fast Lane.
PARK RANKINGS:
I think there are a couple issues with Orion.
It doesn’t do much to differentiate itself from Diamondback and ends up being overshadowed by Diamondback as a result.
From what I understood, the ride was originally meant to be built at another park and then Cedar Fair had a change of plans to put it at KI instead. This is why the first issue above exists.
Fury has really spoiled a lot of peeps in regard to B&M Gigas with just how absolutely groundbreaking it is. It has a unique layout that completely bucks the B&M hyper model of floater airtime, and instead focuses and shredding through its layout with low to the ground elements as well as the crazy lateral airtime moment on the clef. Orion on the other hand can feel like you standard hyper, just larger. I think a lot of enthusiasts were thinking B&M was going to create another unique ride like Fury, and were disappointed that it wasn’t that.
That said, Orion is still a fantastic ride and runs glass smooth. Anyone going to KI should absolutely hit up Orion while they are there.
I agree with what you're saying. I feel like a lot of the dislike for it is just because it wasn't what enthusiasts wanted it to be, not because it's actually a disappointing ride. Just because it could have been better doesn't mean that it's not great!
>runs glass smooth
guess it depends on what seat because my ride was definitely not glass smooth.
Orion feels short and is overshadowed by Diamondback. Both don't need to exist at the same park and offer something very similar. It's not a bad ride by any means, but it just doesn't stand out compared to its peers.
Beast night ride is worth the 2 hours.
I agree that they do pretty much the same thing, but "big hills and lots of airtime" is generally my favorite type of ride so having two in the same park is still a plus for me. Yeah, it would be cool if Orion had been something more special but I don't think that takes away from what it is.
Also, good to know. Guess I'll tough it out next time haha
The out-and-back layout is somewhat underwhelming, Diamondback has this but also ventures another way. I'm somewhat surprised that Diamondback is a few feet shorter than Orion, and identical durations.
I enjoy Millenium Force more with it's more "random" layout and feels like it's just speeding around more, whereas airtime kills a lot of speed. Orion feels like a Steel Racer in it's layout, with a random helix at the end that isn't spectacular. There's so much land over in that area it feels like they could have taken advantage of the woods more or gone more than out and back.
It's somewhat nitpicky and I enjoy it, but it's probably a good 5th place ride for me behind Beast, Banshee, Mystic, and Diamondback.
Orion is great but has 3 elite elements and that’s it. The drop is probably the best drop I’ve been on, and I’ve been on Fury. The speed hill is unique. You don’t really see anything like it on other hypers and gigas. The camelback is basically the same sensation as the second Diamondback one.
All in all, it’s short, but still in my top 20 mostly because of the drop and speed hill.
7/23/25 was a Wednesday, yo.
Next you're gonna tell me that August isn't the 7th month of the year.
(it should say 8/23)
The natural park beauty, professionalism of the staff, coaster lineup, dining options, make this the best park in the country hands down.
It is a beautiful park to walk around, but there are much better coasters, food, and entertainment at other parks. Also the cleanliness is debatable.
It is beautiful, but far from the best in terms of coaster lineup, dining options, and professionalism of staff (the staff is fantastic though)
Agree. BGW is definitely a beautiful park. But I would give best overall park to Kings Island. Lineup, ride-ops, food options.
It's been nominated the "world's most beautiful park" since 1999 and held that title since funny enough.
I mean, at its best, I agree. Lately though, it's been lacking.
You should have seen it 25 years ago!
Or even 5 years ago 🫠
