Best Apps for Instagram Photo Editing

TL;DR

  • Snapseed: Highly recommended for general photo editing.
  • Lightroom Mobile: Offers advanced features and is often considered the best for photo editing.
  • VSCO: Great for filters and consistent aesthetic.

Snapseed

Snapseed is frequently mentioned as a top choice for photo editing, particularly because it is free and offers a wide range of editing tools [1:3], [1:5], [2:1], [5:1]. Users appreciate its ease of use and effectiveness in making image adjustments like brightness, contrast, and white balance. It is also noted for being suitable for both casual edits and more detailed work [1:7].

Lightroom Mobile

Lightroom Mobile is another highly recommended app, praised for its comprehensive editing capabilities [1:4], [5:5]. While some features may require a subscription, many users find that the free options are sufficient for most editing needs [5:7]. Lightroom is especially favored by those looking for professional-level edits and is often paired with Snapseed for optimal results [5:3].

VSCO

VSCO is popular for its filters and ability to maintain a consistent aesthetic across photos [2:2], [2:4]. It's particularly useful for small brands or individuals looking to apply templated filters to their images. While VSCO offers a variety of filters, some users note that certain features may be paywalled [4:1].

Canva

Canva is another option for those interested in graphic edits, such as adding text, shapes, and stickers [1:3], [1:6]. While Canva's free version provides basic editing tools, some elements may require payment [5]. It is ideal for creating memes and other social media graphics [4:1].

Other Recommendations

For specific types of edits, such as aesthetic photo edits or meme creation, apps like Prequel and Picsart are suggested [4:1]. Additionally, Gimp is recommended as a free alternative to Photoshop for those familiar with desktop editing [5:8].

Why not Canva? Or best could be use a social media tool that has an image editor and then get it posted to Instagram via the same tool

Not crazy edits, the options offered in Instagram are to small. Wanted to try and find apps that provides larger options to edit pictures.

Sure, but what are you trying to edit?

Like are you trying to make image adjustments like brightness, contrast, white balance, and some effects? If so, I would recommend using the Snapseed app on your phone.

If you’re trying to make more graphic edits, like adding text, shapes, stickers etc, I would recommend Canva.

There are so many to choose from it’s impossible to give a good rec without understanding your goal.

I second this, with VSCO you can set a templated filter. So all of your photos you edit can be done the exact same way

Photo editing app?

Posted by Different_Move_8699 · in r/beauty · 7 months ago

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask, but how common is the use of photo editing apps on Instagram?

I’m thinking of opening an Instagram account and returning to social media in general after a few years…

Everyone has perfect pictures. I’m not sure if everyone just knows how to pose and edit, or if I’m just ugly, or both?

If it’s really about apps, which one do you recommend?

Prequel is good if you want photo edits for aesthetics, Picsart is good for stickers, warping an image, some filters but a lot of that is paywalled, if you type Meme Generator on Google you will get a bunch of good free ones, and finally Square fit is good for cropping/side by side photos and text!

It used to be Aviary but Adobe well and truely fucked that up for everyone, so maybe it's PhotoEditor filters lumii or snapseed

I still use Aviary. Adobe still has a pop-up for upgrading and I can't download anything like filters. Still the best app for quick edits and enhancements. Transferred from old to new device, though wasn't able to get it to work on latest Samsung tablet.

Not aware of any in Snapseed which is my usual single image editor.

Lightroom I use more for bulk/camera pictures but I have the full Adobe subscription for that so not sure what any free options would be.

Does it need an update? It's not like it rots or something, it does what it does just fine. Why does it need an update?

Mindsets like this are the reason many developers push random updates to their apps that don't actually change anything but just make you think it's being somehow updated. "Bugfixes and performance improvements".

What Apps do people use to create / edit their photos and stories for Instagram?

Posted by kirky647 · in r/Instagram · 6 years ago

I’m just interested to see what other people are using, I am forever coming across a new app etc that I can use, some good and some not so good. I also seem to just get left with a folder full of apps on my phone that I’m not using.

Maybe learning what works for other people might help me refine down to just a few that are my go to apps :)

I tested 21+ photo editing apps — here’s what’s actually worth downloading in 2025 📸

Hi! Do you have any app suggestions where I can edit shirt designs?

2 upvotes on reddit
TheiPhoneAppGuy · OP · 11 days ago

Yeah, you probably don’t wanna use a normal photo editor for that. Canva is super easy for shirt templates, Procreate if you’ve got an iPad and wanna actually draw, Over (now called GoDaddy Studio) is good for text/logo type stuff, and Placeit is nice if you just wanna see your design on a shirt mockup. Depends if you’re just making something for fun or planning to sell but those should cover you.

CreativityUnlocked_ · 20 days ago

Wooooow. Appreciate the time it took for you not only to download and use these but also write a round-up.

Since you explored Lightroom and Photoshop Express, you might also want to check out Adobe Express**.** It has a solid free tier that and includes features like background removal, generative fill, text effects, and AI image generation. Plus, it’s available on both mobile and web, which makes it super flexible.

Disclosure: I work at Adobe, so I’ve had a chance to explore Adobe Express pretty deeply, but I genuinely think it deserves a spot in any photo editing roundup, especially for folks looking for creative tools that are easy to use and accessible.

Would love to hear your thoughts if you end up testing it!

If you want a database+editor, with non-destructive edits of your originals, the edit details recorded in the database itself, use Lightroom. If you want simply edits, the free Snapseed lets you overwrite your original or save to a new file. If you want AI tools to be included, such as one-button selection of sky for adjustment or easy removal of an unneeded object with auto replacement of background, Lightroom works well. If you want to do combined shots to get all highlight and shadow details, Lightroom. A lot depends on what you want to do.

It's hard to reply without knowing your goals, budget, and platform. If you just need to edit raw files, Darktable and Rawtherapee are very good free options. If you need more complex editing, Affinity Photo is an excellent choice and very cheap. To do quick edits in your cellphone, Snapseed is very complete.

    • Supports RAW photo editing.
    • Syncs with the desktop version for seamless editing.
  2. VSCO:

  5. Afterlight:

    • Offers a mix of filters, textures, and frames.
    • User-friendly with a focus on quick edits.
    • Includes advanced features like curves and blending modes.
