What Redditors are Saying

Best Apps for Tracking Expenses

TL;DR Popular apps for tracking expenses include YNAB, Mint, Monarch, and Bluecoins. Each offers unique features catering to different needs, from manual entry to automated tracking.

YNAB (You Need a Budget)

YNAB is frequently recommended across discussions as a top choice for budgeting and expense tracking. It emphasizes manual entry, which many users find beneficial for becoming more conscious of their spending habits [1:1][3:1]. Users praise YNAB for its comprehensive budgeting tools, although it comes with a subscription fee [4:6].

Mint

Mint is another popular option mentioned for tracking expenses. It's free and automatically pulls data from linked accounts, making it easy to track spending without manual input [4:1][4:2]. Mint is ideal for users looking for a straightforward way to categorize and view their spending patterns.

Monarch

Monarch is praised for its user-friendly interface and ability to connect multiple accounts. It provides a trial period, after which users can opt for a paid subscription [3:6][3:9]. Monarch is suitable for those who want a visually appealing app that offers detailed insights into their financial health.

Bluecoins

Bluecoins is recommended for users who prefer a one-time payment model to unlock premium features. It supports multiple accounts, making it a good choice for individuals with various financial streams [2:2][2:7]. However, there have been reports of issues on iOS, so it's worth checking compatibility before purchasing.

GoodSteward.io and Goodbudget

For those interested in manual entry without automatic bank connections, GoodSteward.io offers a local-only solution with customizable budget categories [1:2]. Goodbudget uses the envelope system, allowing users to allocate funds to specific categories and manually track expenses [1:3].

Additional Considerations

Some users prefer using spreadsheets like Excel or Google Sheets for expense tracking due to their flexibility in categorizing transactions [4:3][5:4]. Others have developed custom solutions, such as an Mpesa Statement Analyzer, for personalized tracking [5:3]. If you are tech-savvy, creating a custom tool may offer the most tailored experience.

Best App For Budgeting And Real-time Tracking?

ORIGINAL POST

I'm just really getting started trying to keep a budget. I've looked at a few of the popular ones: YNAB, Monarch, Everydollar, Copilot. What I really want is an app where I can map out my budget with here is what I currently have, here is income that's coming and when and here's how I want to map out spending in different areas.

The hard part is I'm trying to find an app where I can track my spending in real-time in the moment. It looks like most apps are geared towards the accounts automatically pulling the info in. While that's nice and helpful my biggest problem is spending. I need to be able to enter a transaction immediately after a purchase so I see what impact it has, where it leaves me for that category and overall in general. If I see a number that's higher for the account because transactions aren't pulling in showing cleared for a day or two that will give me a false sense of where I am. I'm trying to train my brain but also be extremely conscious of each purchase.

Is there an app that anyone would recommend that would make this easier?

GoodSteward.io is free and local only if you don't mind manually adding transactions or importing transactions (in CSV, OFX/QFX etc) from your bank. Should have everything you'd need for budgeting, including budget template builder and completely customizable budget categories as you see fit etc... without having to worry about your financial data.

In terms of features, it has a great transaction ledger that's easy to search and filter, lots of utility functions such as transaction splitting, bulk edits, reconcile etc, a great rule engine, and just released auto categorization, review etc. It has customizable reports and charts, including a trend chart that's very similar to Mint's.

But if you want automated data syncing from your banks, then the paid version is based on the number of institutions you connect with, and probably one of the lowest prices. Has great bank coverage with a number of data aggregators integrated (MX + Plaid, with Finicity shortly). Also has 30 day free-trial without requiring CC.

It'll probably have the similar issue as other apps, if you want immediate real-time updates... But since it doesn't force you to connect to your bank, some people actually pay for the cheapest tier of paid version, so they can have data sync across devices.

Give it a try if interested.

Goodbudget is the envelope system. You basically enter how much you got paid and which ‘envelope’ you’re funding. Then if you buy something, enter in that cost and which ‘envelope’ you’re taking it from. It’s pretty eye opening on where ones money goes.

Your best bet will be to add your transactions manually. I promise you, it makes you a lot more conscious about your spending compared to automatic tracking.

Someone here ne tiked that YNAB offers manual entry, but then you'd be paying a lot more and using a lot less of their functionality.

If you're not okay with that, you can give Budgety a try. They have a plan for manual entries alone at $2.99 per month and $20 per year. You can also create budgets and track, and you have access to insights, too.

I wish you good luck!

I'm using Bluecoins. I remember trying a bunch of apps and while there were others with nicer look and feel, this one only asked for a one-time payment for me to unlock premium - key thing for me was allowing a lot of accounts coz I have a lot of trad and digital accounts. Easy enough to use and get used to thou so I'd still recommend.

I think i was told thou that it stopped working properly for ios a few months back, not sure if it was ever resolved.

Maganda both ang UI at UX. If ayaw mo na nag-iinput manually ng mga interest income mo from your banks, nakaautomate na sya without connecting sa banks mo. All you have to do is, iset yung interest rate

I use YNAB. Is it the best one? I dunno, it’s the one I use. I feel like the best budgeting app is the app that you actually use.

YNAB (youneedabudget.com) is the top of the pack...or if you are comfortable with open source, you can run Actual Budget (like the older version of YNAB4) for much less money.

For a good intro to how it works, look up Nick True on YouTube (Mapped out Money used to be his channel name).

What app can I use to track spending? I need to manage budget

Posted by MammothStorm2092 · in r/personalfinance · 3 years ago

I've been tracking my spending on Google Sheets, but it's not working that great. Is there an app I can use to do this? I want to track my budget. Should I use Quicken?

I have three credit cards. I put everything on my cards (except for rent), so I get points for Amazon, airlines, etc. I'd like to be able to get a better view of what I spending on food, coffee shop coffee, etc. Thanks!

Your bank may have a tool.

I personally use "full view" (I think it's called) through Fidelity. You can link mortgage, credit cards, banks, etc. It then gives you a full view (hence the name) of your wealth, how it's spread out across types of accounts, and what your in/outflow of money is like. There's also a tab that lets you view transactions with multiple filters. It will attempt to automatically categorize your expenditures (and you can edit any that were wrong). It's nice to get the larger picture, but also be able to drill down and see the individual transactions and spending categories.

I'd start with Mint, it's free and does a good job of tracking spending. If that doesn't meet your needs, YNAB or Simplifi are good.

I will say YNAB literally changed my life. We didn’t exactly have money troubles before and were good with spending overall, but it allowed us to easily pay off debt and save for a house all in about five years. It’s not cheap but I would recommend it to basically anybody. Pays for itself 100x over If you use it properly.

  • I want to be able to make categories such as "food", "rent", "internet", "Gojek (uber equivalent)" etc etc
  • And then to add an entry, it will automatically choose the current date (but it can be changed), I select category, and then I enter the cost and done
  • Then I can go to reports, and choose a month and then see a total for each category

🤖

best apps for tracking expenses

Key Considerations for Expense Tracking Apps

  1. User Interface: Look for an app with an intuitive and user-friendly interface that makes it easy to input and categorize expenses.

  2. Features: Consider features like receipt scanning, budget creation, bill reminders, and financial reporting to help you manage your finances effectively.

  3. Syncing Capabilities: Choose an app that can sync with your bank accounts and credit cards for automatic transaction tracking, which saves time and reduces manual entry.

  4. Security: Ensure the app has strong security measures, such as encryption and two-factor authentication, to protect your financial data.

  5. Cost: Some apps are free, while others require a subscription. Evaluate whether the features offered justify any costs.

Top Recommendations:

  1. Mint:

    • Pros: Free, syncs with bank accounts, offers budgeting tools, and provides credit score monitoring.
    • Cons: Ads can be intrusive, and some users report syncing issues.
  2. YNAB (You Need A Budget):

    • Pros: Focuses on proactive budgeting, offers educational resources, and has a strong community.
    • Cons: Subscription fee (around $14.99/month or $98.99/year), which may not suit everyone.
  3. PocketGuard:

    • Pros: Simple interface, shows how much disposable income you have after bills and goals.
    • Cons: Limited features in the free version; some users may find it too simplistic.
  4. Expensify:

    • Pros: Great for business expenses, receipt scanning, and expense reporting.
    • Cons: More suited for business use; personal finance features may be limited.
  5. EveryDollar:

    • Pros: Easy to use, zero-based budgeting approach, and a free version available.
    • Cons: The free version lacks bank syncing; the paid version is required for that feature.

Recommendation: If you're looking for a comprehensive and user-friendly option, Mint is a great starting point due to its free access and robust features. For those serious about budgeting, YNAB is highly recommended despite the cost, as it encourages proactive financial management.
