TL;DR
Streaming App Availability on macOS
One of the main challenges with downloading streaming content on macOS is the limited availability of native apps that allow offline viewing. Unlike Windows, which has more dedicated apps for services like Netflix and Prime Video, macOS primarily relies on web browsers for streaming [2:3],
[3:1]. However, if you have an Apple Silicon Mac, you can install iOS apps from the App Store, which may offer offline download capabilities
[2:8].
Alternative Streaming Solutions
For those looking for alternatives, the Friendly Streaming app was mentioned as a tool that optimizes the streaming experience on macOS by allowing users to add their favorite streaming services [4:1]. While it doesn't enable offline downloads directly, it provides a more seamless interface than using a browser
[4:6]. Plex is another option, offering both streaming and offline playback capabilities through its macOS version
[4:2].
Downloading Content for Offline Viewing
If you're seeking to download content for offline viewing, one suggestion is to purchase content through the iTunes Store [5:1]. Alternatively, setting up a Plex server allows you to store and access your legally acquired content, which can then be downloaded to devices like an iPad for offline use
[5:3]. Another approach is to use video downloaders such as Keeprix, although this method may not be officially supported by streaming services
[4:4].
Workarounds and Additional Tips
Some users have suggested workarounds like downloading content on a mobile device and casting it to a Mac or TV for a larger screen experience [2:4],
[5:2]. While these solutions don't solve the offline viewing issue directly on a Mac, they provide flexibility in how content can be consumed across devices. Additionally, using extensions in Chromium-based browsers can enhance the usability of streaming websites
[4:5].
In summary, while macOS lacks the robust app ecosystem for offline streaming available on other platforms, there are several strategies and tools that can help bridge the gap. Exploring these options can enhance your streaming experience on a Mac.
Is it possible for me to download a movie just like on Android with an external player, on MacOS? Does anyone know of there are some video players available to do that? I would use some magnet link website but most of them have a very low limit and it isnt enough for many movies nor tv shows.
App 1ADM
Thanks
Did this app work for you? I’ve been searching online for how to download shows and movies off stremio so I can stream offline. Plz let need me if you know anyway to do that. Thanks
I'm new to MacOS with my first macbook. How come there are barely any streaming apps on MacOS?
Why no Netflix for example? Now there's no way to watch anything offline.
On Windows almost every streaming service has an app available.
Because you can use the streaming services from the browser?
Did you read my post? With an app you can download the media and view it offline. Can't do that in a browser.
You should be able to install the iPhone & iPad apps from the app store
Us iMac owners want an easy way to download and watch movies on a plane, duh!
Workaround would be to download on phone and airplay to Mac for the bigger screen. Not perfect, but at least you could get by.
Probably because nobody cares
You must never travel my friend. Get out of your basement once in a while, it’s nice!!
More than you think 😅 I just use the said streaming apps on my iPad. But I agree it's strange
As a frequent traveler, I never use my laptop as a form of entertainment. Decided to leave my ipad at home this time and stumble upon this haha. ipad all day man!
a lot of these windows 'apps' are really just a container app that shows another version of their site, or so it seems to me
i hope you got an Apple Silicon macbook as iirc (some? all?) iOS apps will work on it
https://support.apple.com/guide/app-store/iphone-ipad-apps-mac-apple-silicon-fird2c7092da/mac
That’s up to the app developer
I'm trying to see if I can download content from my streaming subscriptions like HBO Max through Apple TV on my MacBook. Do I need to subscribe to Apple TV+? I know you can do this through streaming apps on mobile devices but not on a laptop. If not, what is the best software to do this? I found MovPilot but it's rather expensive.
No. Nothing - you can’t download content to Apple TV from streaming apps.
Some streaming services might allow you to download using their own apps if they have them but there aren’t any on macOS I know - they all use web browsers.
On iOS devices more streaming services have apps which allow downloading - Netflix for example. It’s a DRM issue.
Thanks. That's what I've found so far.
So all this time I thought WindowsOS had a leg up on MacOS because the Microsoft app store had apps available for Netflix, Plex, Prime Video, HBO Max, etc. I always assumed with these apps, you could download content for offline viewing. This is particularly useful where WiFi isn't available, such as on an airplane or somewhere remote. Recently, I purchased a Windows laptop to try it on for size. One of the first things I did was download some of these media apps to determine if they were advantageous. Well, come to find out, these apps are nothing more than web apps that tap into the website's API. There are no offline viewing options whatsoever. If you wanted a similar app experience on MacOS, you can download the Friendly Streaming app on the App Store.
I've seen people complain about the lack of availability of these apps on MacOS and I've been one of those people. So I just wanted to come here and set the record straight. The only true availability for offline viewing on these apps is through your phone or tablet. I didn't try every app, but this is particularly true for Netflix, HBO Max, and Apple TV. And at least the Apple TV app on MacOS does allow you to download content; it doesn't on WindowsOS.
So there you have it. My sincerest apologies for thinking otherwise.
Yep, entirely valid statements. I might also add that your best bet is usually adding the websites as web apps (done in Safari via Share → Add to Dock, though it doesn’t have to stay in the dock; done in Chromium based browsers usually through an “apps” menu in the more options area; not natively supported on most Firefox-based browsers at the time of writing).
Pro tip: If you use a Chromium-based browser like Microsoft Edge, Brave, or Google Chrome, I highly recommend looking into extensions made it to optimize the usability of your favorite websites.
Only thing I'll add is that Plex and Prime Video do allow for downloads on WindowsOS. But you can download the Prime Video app on Apple's App Store, and it also allows for offline viewing. There is no Plex app for MacOS to my recollection.
I started using Friendly Streaming app because it seems to play nicer with Neftlix than Safari does. You can add most of your favorite streaming services to it as well, and it functions the same as any web app, but optimized for streaming content.
Plex does in fact have a macOS version for streaming and offline playback, as well as a server download.

I'm really a fanatic of watching TV series. I like dramas on every platform. But it really bothers me that I can't watch it on the big screen, so I've been looking for a way to download it to my computer (I use Windows 11). I've used y2mate, streamfab and other tools before, among which keeprix has two free opportunities to try it. I found that it can indeed be successful. I use this now.
I simply pasted the Netflix shortcut on my Mac and replaced the icon with the Netflix logo. This way, it looks like the Netflix app is installed on my Mac, but in fact, it still takes me to the web page. As for offline viewing, I directly use a video downloader (e.g., Keeprix).
I like Friendly Streaming, but for some reason it’s always signing me out of streaming services and I have to sign back in before I can watch something. Not sure if it’s a cookie retention issue or what the case may be, but kind of annoying.
Download were possible on Netflix app on Windows but they recently discontinued that app and replaced it with PWA crap.
I’ve had an iPad at work. I have a lot of downtime so I like to watch content downloaded on Netflix and hbo max and all that. The internet down here is just no good for streaming so it being downloaded is important
I’ve thought about trying a Mac for a while and a lot of my use for it would be watching content on it. How do people on Mac consume content? Are there apps like on iPad for Disney plus and Hulu and all that?
I sail the seas for content. Aswell i use streaming services for content. I use a mac air , my main app for downloaded content is vlc. But my most essential purchase is a 5 m, hdmi cable to my tv. That allows me to have my laptop next to me on a coffee table , but i can watch stuff on my big screen tv.
If i want to use streaming services i use the browser version. But there no offline viewing that way.
You could try casting from your ipad to your tv. Aslong as your tv is smart, it should in theory allow your smart devices to ‘cast’ to them
I too recommend casting content to your tv… at work.
☠️
I have a Plex server at home with my 100% legally acquired content. I can use the Plex app on iPad to download the content to watch offline later.
no, these streaming platforms usually don’t have a desktop app and won’t let you download content offline, which sucks
Congratulations on being the only person here who seems to have actually read OP’s question.
Well, you and the bloody pirates.
I bet your fun at parties
The easiest way to watch downloaded content on Mac is buy them through the iTunes Store or get them from an alternative source.
It took me way too long to even comprehend OP's question.
What was confusing about the question? “How do you watch things without an internet connection. Are there apps where you can download content like Netflix”. Seems pretty straight forward
There is no legit way to do so, as Netflix request you to watch their contents in a web browser. It's their business strategy. If you try to record screen while playing in web browser, you'll only get black screen.
Just don't Google "Netflix" & "recorder" if you want to be law-abiding.
😂
Is there a way to download movies on my Mac so that I can watch them offline? I don't see any Mubi app specially created for Mac The only other option seems to be downloading movies via my iPhone and then trying to stream them on my Mac via airplay, but that does not work for some reason.
Unfortunately there is no dedicated MUBI app for MacOS and you cannot download MUBI content for offline watching on a Mac. Netflix has exactly the same problem - no MacOS app.
I'm looking for StreamerApp alternatives as it's not supported on Mac. Any suggestions?
MovieBoxPro is amazing and it’s 100% worth the VIP subscription. Works on every device there is. So it’s amazing.
I checked the price and it seems really great - how can I get the subscription? I can't really find a way to buy it.
hi, i have a slot for $10/year
Can you not use some website instead? I have one if u wanna DM me.
Kodi, MovieBoxPro
What's the best app or browser plugin to download video streams from streaming sites? On Windows, I used to use VideoDownloadHelper for Firefox --- does something like this exist for MacOS?
This is probably a dumb question, but does it not work in FireFox on a Mac? Or are you not wanting to use FF on Mac?
Edit to add: if you’re comfortable using Terminal, YouTube-dl or yt-dlp are two tools that support a lot of sites.
and for those who prefer to directly grab with video with a link parser, here is a step-by-step guide using free tools I tested, I wanted to leave a message here in case anyone still needs it.
Thought this may look intimidating at first, youtube-dl is by far the best utility for this. Once it's installed all you do is type youtube-dl "link-to-video"
and it does everything else for you :)
But how do you get the “link to video”? The nice thing about VideoDownloadHelper was that you would just click a button and it would fetch the links and download it
https://clipgrab.en.softonic.com/mac
ClipGrab is built on YouTube-dl and it’s very easy to use.
Paid, but JustStream does this. In the past, Beamer worked better for me streaming MKVs, but not sure if it can stream desktop. Both are available on Setapp.
I thought Google Chrome browser can chromecast a desktop.
MKStreamer - worked best for me. I personally even use it to also stream videos that are still downloading. You just have to open the file with terminal:
open -a MKStreamer <drag&drop file here>
Mkstreamer also has a lot of options. I just wish they had better subtitle support (no auto-fixing of subtitle encoding, no option to open external subtitles --> both of which are basic & included in like any good video player.
Flawless, thank you.
My only wish for Transmission is that it was able to connect to a Transmission server like the Windows and Linux client can.
What do you mean? I use Transmission Remote GUI, & have no issues doing that.
I use qbit, but I’m an an ex-windows user and have recently converted to Mac, so I’d never heard of Transmission. Are there any unique traits or features that it has over qbit?
It just has everything in a simple way, it’s been the standard on mac for over a decade. It’s the same core features, But the UI is cleaner and integration is better like the macos notifications. I’d give it a shot to compare!
Qbit has a bit more stuff like web-app support if you’re running on a server or integrated torrent search, but they’re not features I use, I prefer a more barebones experience.
nice summary, i might try this transmission client.
Apart from the good UI, one of the selling features to old me was that I can put upload on 0 and the app itself doesn't impact my download speed. Nowadays I don't care about that, and the app UX is just great.
It's only got some insane lag issues for me at shutdown due to having far too many pending (maybe adding 500 trackers to many of those influences this too), but I have some pending that have been dying for a seed for years now.
Definitely qBittorrent because it can bind to a specific network interface.
The issue for Transmission is still open.
Meanwhile, qBittorent says this on their download page:
>The macOS version is barely supported, because we don't have active macOS developers/contributors.
You know what though, I’ve been using it on my Mac seed box for years and it’s been flawless, and still gets updates every so often.
As a Mac user this was what killed qBittorrent for me. I used to use it before apple went with the M chips.
qb if you want a more full featured (advanced) client and you like to fiddle around with settings and stuff.
Transmission if you want a nice clean interface and something that just works.
(Personally I use Transmission because I just need a downloader that just works and looks nice and clean. qb UI looks very cluttered to me.)
I agree QB is better, but I don't agree it's clutter, I found it user-friendly. For the main PC, I use QB but for my macbook, Transmission. (Same reason as you, I just want a downloader that works for my Mac and nothing more.)
