TL;DR
Live Bait Options
Live bait is a popular choice among anglers targeting redfish. Live shrimp under a popping cork is a classic method that proves effective, especially during flood tides over grass flats [1:1]. Finger mullet are another favorite due to their flash and swim pattern, making them ideal near creek mouths or structures at high tide
[1:1]
[1:4]. Blue crabs are also mentioned as a successful bait option
[3:6].
Cut Bait
Cut mullet is frequently recommended for catching big redfish. It can be used on various rigs such as fish finder rigs, which are particularly effective when fishing in high current areas [3:2]
[3:4]. Pinfish heads and spot heads were also noted for their effectiveness due to their oily nature
[3:1].
Soft Plastics and Lures
Soft plastics are another viable option for redfish. The Z-Man Paddle Tail and Gulp! Swimming Mullet are highlighted for their scent and action, providing consistent results [1:1]
[1:2]. Vudu shrimp is mentioned as a hit-or-miss option but can be effective under certain conditions
[1]. Other soft plastic options include Chicken Boy Bloody Mary Shrimp and Strike King Rage Tail Rage Craw, which mimic crustaceans
[4:1]
[4:2].
Fishing Techniques and Conditions
Understanding the tides and fishing conditions is crucial for success with redfish. Fishing around slack tide and targeting structure and ambush points where currents move past can increase your chances [5:1]. Sight fishing for tailing reds is also a favored technique among enthusiasts
[5:1]. Using a floating cork with live shrimp along shorelines during incoming tides is another effective strategy
[5:3].
Additional Recommendations
For those struggling to catch redfish, consulting local guides can provide valuable insights and techniques specific to the area [5:4]. Adjusting bait types and rigs based on local conditions and experimenting with different methods can help improve success rates.
Currently mine are 1: Live shrimp 2: Paddle tail soft plastic 3: Finger mullet 4: Vudu shrimp 5: Cut mullet HM: Spoons
Vudu shrimp are a huge hit or miss and spoons are too inconsistent for me to ever use.
ZMan Diezel Minnowz, ZMan EZ Shrimpz, ZMan Jerk Shadz, cut crab (any kind other than blue crab, I’m eating those), finger mullet
I've caught many off a live pinfish.
Yes i need to try this
My favorite is using live blue crabs and fingerling mullet
Top water is my #1
For spin tackle it’s by far the most exciting. I’ll throw top water till my arm falls off
Here here
Great list — solid picks all around. Here’s my personal top 5 for redfish in Charleston waters during summer, especially when the tides are right:
1. Live Mullet (3–5 inch) – Hard to beat the flash and swim pattern. I like fishing them near creek mouths or structure at high tide.
2. Live Shrimp under a popping cork – Classic, and deadly. Especially effective on flood tide over grass flats.
3. Gulp! Swimming Mullet (white or new penny) – Scent + action = consistency. I rig it on a 1/8 oz jighead.
4. Z-Man Paddle Tail (Diesel MinnowZ) – Durable and moves great through oyster beds or around docks.
5. Cut Menhaden or Mullet – Especially good on the bottom near current breaks or drop-offs. Bigger reds love the scent trail.
Honorable Mention: A gold spoon can work magic in shallow grass on a calm morning — but yeah, only if conditions are just right.
Redfish are scent-driven in summer, so anything that stinks or kicks gets the nod. Curious to hear how others do on soft crabs or topwater early AM?
Big boy! I live for redfish but they aren’t doing well in my area. I saw one big one yesterday though so hopefully the spring will bring them back to us.
Great catch! That’s a tank
What area are they struggling in? Here in the southeast they are everywhere
Tampa and Pinellas - there’s a reason our redfish have credit as “urban” or “learned” fish
these fish are ran over, swam through, cast at, and chased by dolphins all day, they don’t run in schools they run in smaller packs around here
Meanwhile guys everywhere north of me are thick in good redfish.
I think our water quality is suffering, like bad bad.. the development here is insane
Best meat and fight, right next to my other favorite, snook
They’re pretty much all I fish for anymore. Sight fishing reds in super skinny water is just the best.
Agree, rather catch 1 slot red than 5 trout any day!
Hell yea brother. You ever fly fish for them?
I read “beat meat and fight” like four times.
Sounds like a good Tuesday night 😂
I caught probably 40 slot sized reds last year and couldn’t eat any of them…I’m in the Indian river lagoon region of florida and they’re currently catch and release only…I kinda wanna die.
I love mine with an upvote, some garlic, butter, all-purpose seasong, and fresh lemon. Oh yea, a cold glass of lemonade.
Does a bear shit in the woods?
Best target fish hands down! I’m an inshore Charleston fisherman you can’t beat red bite
Whats the best bait for redfish and what rig would ya'll suggest?
The best bait I've seen is cut mullet.
Always a fan of a mullet head. Sometimes a pinfish head. Used to be spot heads, they are really oily, but spot seem scarce for quite a while now.
what rig would you suggest?
Carolina, fish finder, drop shot, drop loop, hi lo, popping cork, 3 way
That’s basically the whole list but it depends on the situation.
I’ve been tying more drop loop and hi lo rigs lately because they keep the bait off the bottom but stay low in the water column.
Drop shots are good for high current because the bait’s presentation is less susceptible to the current, they’re also very easy to tie since it’s just a palomar to the hook with a long tag end going to the weight.
Thanks! I want to try and catch some smaller sharks and black/red drum so mullet should be perfect for that from what I’m hearing.
Cut mullet on a fish finder rig. Or if they are crashing the beach a big silver Hopkins lure.
Cut mullet or blue crab
Blue crab
I like strike king rage tail rage craw. Alot of different colors to choose from and mimics a little crab. My go to is moon juice. Use a 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook.
Nice blue claws
Looks like you’re in for a very tasty night.
Looking good
Chicken boy bloody mary shrimp is a great one. Any Vudu shrimp as well. Haven't had as much luck with typical fish-shaped soft baits.
Recently move to the coastal sc area and have been trying to catch redfish to no avail. I’ve been out 6-7 times over the last couple weeks and all I have caught was a small flounder.
I’ve fished both inlets and creeks/rivers from land and water. I’ve been using frozen shrimp on a carolina rig with 1-2oz weights and gulp mullet on 1/4-1/2oz jigs. With the jigs I fish shallow water near the banks bouncing it off the bottom. I try to find oyster beds to drift by. I have seen a few fish cruising around in these locations but couldn’t tempt them. Are these fish particularly difficult to catch or am I doing something wrong? Any advice would be appreciated. Considering just getting a guide to show me the ropes.
Example location and setup included.
Reds love crustaceans. Try using live shrimp instead, or sieve some sand fleas, then find an oyster bed with a few holes around it or a channel nearby.
Floating cork with 2-3' leader to 2/0 circle hook with live shrimp. Cast along shoreline during incoming tide
Target bends in marsh creeks, near logs and under and around docks. Use 20lb flouro leader from cork to circle hook. Live shrimp is a huge help. "Pop" the cork a few times here and there to ring the dinner bell. Sometimes you'll never need to pop it. Once the cork goes under start to reel and don't jerk set the hook just keep rod tip up and continue to keep pressure on the line while reeling in. Also- go out with a guide if you can afford it. They're a great resource and happy to teach you. Capt. Danny Neese - Knotstressed charters out of Mt. Pleasant is my guy when I'm there.
Sounds like there’s a good consensus that live bait is key. I’ll give this advice a try and see what Danny is up to if I can’t get it figured out
I've only caught a few but every time, it was as the tide was nearing high tide and every time i saw or heard a splash and just threw a shrimp on a size 1 bass hook with like a 1/8th worm weight on it, horrible looking rig but it caught all 3 i ever saw. It was almost always near a creek coming into the brackish river i was fishing, probably a mile and a half from the coast
Reds are one of my favorites to catch. I use mostly lures, but also live and dead bait. Tides are very important, that 1-2 hour window before and after a slack tide is the best time. On an incoming tide you want to fish behind tide breaks closer to the inlets and move up the creeks and marshes with the tide and the bait. On the falling tide you’ll follow them out of the marshes and creeks. Look for structure and ambush points that has current moving past. Alternatively, you can do my favorite thing, which is sight fishing for them when they’re tailing on mud flats and in the grass.
My personal favorite are shrimp and a popping cork, the yo zuri 3D mullet, and the bill lewis saltwater rattle trap
H & H chartreuse sparkle beetles and cocohoe minnows. DOA shrimp, gold spoons, GULP!, and flukes. Live shrimp, baby mullet, or croakers under a popping cork for live bait. If they're around they'll hit it all!
How big are the croakers you use? The ones I catch all seem to big for any but the largest of reds.
Usually about 3-4in we catch them in a cast net or buy from the bait shop. They are big red and big trout candy. Yeah the ones you catch on a rod and reel are too big unless you're going to the oil rigs or very far out.
Greenback MirrOlure, xl and standard size.
Live shrimp is my fav
Gold spoons
Live shrimp ona jig head or under a popping cork with ~12”-18” leader. Quartered blue crabs ona slip rig works well too. Lure-wise; soft plastic swimbaits, chatterbaits in grass, or even topwater spooks/twitch baits in the summer.
I would be tempted to say live shrimp.
Gulp shrimp on a jig head. For bait, fresh shrimp live or dead, blue crabs, and big strips of mullet for bulls in the deep ship channels.
Just started to get into fishing and would like to catch a red. My current go to is a main braid to mono lead with a popping cork. I got some matrix shad lemonheads, new penny gulp shrimp, and chicken on a chain with a gold eye 3/16 jig head. Should that be fine?
I also have a cast net and have been able to catch some pretty big mullet.
Zman minnowz and eye strike Texas eye jig heads
Mirrodine lures, topwater walk the dog type lures and jugs with soft plastics slay for me. A live or cut bait siaking on the bottom will catch them first though
Sweet, thank you. Any pointers for those? I have a yozuri and mirrodine mullet. Do you prefer low tide or high tide for murky water. Wouldn't sight fishing be harder during high tide?
Are these effective for catching redfish? What else do I need to get as my go to besides live bait?
For sight fishing skittish single fish chunk of cut bait on a circle hook weightless. Spooks or top dogs when they're schooling. Absolute blast. People that just throw Topwater early morning are missing out
I heard those Houdini catch their eye. Not exactly sure but I will find out.
Couple more flies for Louisiana Redfish. Bit of a mullet/baitfish pattern. Let me know what y’all think!
There are many tried and true Redfish patterns, some are much more productive than others, why don’t you stick with tying those?
