TL;DR
The Smoke Pit
The Smoke Pit is frequently cited as one of the best BBQ spots in the Charlotte metro area. Located in Concord, it has been praised for its consistent quality and flavorful offerings [2:4]
[5:3]. It's not just a favorite among locals; even visitors from places with strong BBQ traditions have found it impressive
[2:10].
Sweet Lew's BBQ
Sweet Lew's BBQ in Belmont receives mixed feedback. Some patrons consider it their favorite, noting that it offers excellent sides along with the BBQ [2:1]
[2:9]. However, others have had less favorable experiences, describing the brisket and ribs as disappointing on occasion
[5:11]
[5:12]. Despite this, it remains a popular choice for many looking to try local BBQ.
Midwood Smokehouse
Midwood Smokehouse is another well-regarded BBQ joint in Charlotte. It is known for its diverse menu, including BBQ tacos and smoked wings [1:1]. The restaurant is also a hotspot for celebrities visiting the city, which speaks to its popularity and reputation
[5:8]. While some may find it overrated, it consistently appears in discussions about top BBQ spots in the area.
Noble Smoke
Noble Smoke garners attention for its brisket and collards, though opinions are divided. Some praise the quality, while others criticize the portion sizes and pricing [1:1]
[5:10]. It seems to be a place where the experience can vary, but it's still worth considering if you're exploring BBQ options in Charlotte.
Jon G's BBQ
For those willing to venture a bit outside Charlotte, Jon G's BBQ in Peachland is highly recommended. Known for its Texas-style BBQ, it operates a food truck that occasionally visits Charlotte [2:3]
[2:12]. While it might not fit the traditional Carolina BBQ mold, it offers a unique and delicious alternative.
In conclusion, Charlotte offers a variety of BBQ experiences, each with its own strengths and potential drawbacks. Whether you're in search of classic Carolina BBQ or something with a Texas twist, there's likely a spot that will satisfy your cravings.
Hey y'all, what are the best BBQ joints to hit up in Charlotte?
The Smoke Pit (Concord), Midwood Smokehouse, Sweet Lews.
Came here to say the same thing.
Noble Smoke.
I went to Sweet Lews once and it was barely edible fwiw.
Yet you name the most overrated and one of the worst briskets in NC. Haven’t tried sweet lews. But noble is terrible. Only has a rep cause if it’s chef being good at being a chef, not a pitmaster
Jon G’s is the best.
Depends strongly on what specifically you’re looking for.
Just tell me what you dig.
I like the brisket and collards at noble smoke. Sweet Lou’s for ribs. Midwood for BBQ tacos and smoked wings. My backyard or Lexington for pulled pork.
The 'Itis is about to be very real.
I have some family coming in from out of state and am looking for some real deal Carolina BBQ in Charlotte, any suggestions?
Update: thanks for all the replies! The jury is still out! Loving the heated discussion, a lot of smoke in the comments. This subject must hit right to the bone of Charlotte culture!
Jon G's. It's in Peachland and only open on Saturdays but their food truck comes to Charlotte every now and then. Incredible food and very nice people.
Jon Gs is the best bbq by far, but if you want Carolina BBQ, that's not it. Jon Gs is TX bbq.
And Carolina BBQ is shit. Thus this is the best BBQ in Charlotte.
Is it different at the restaurant than the food truck when they come to Charlotte? I had their food at triple c one time and waited in line a long time and it was garbage
Yep. Came here to say, the best BBQ is just outside of CLT. Moved here from Houston. Miss NOTHING when I go to the Smoke Pit.
God, it’s easy to be fat, here 😑
I always have a great experience with midwood smokehouse, especially the platter that you can all split!
One of the places that regularly pops up when this question gets asked is The Spoke Pit in Concord. I go there pretty much anytime I want BBQ and it's the best BBQ I have found around here.
I’ve tried over 10 different BBQ places in the greater Charlotte area. Sweet Lew’s in Belmont is my favorite.
i will second sweet lews, they are on par with smoke pit on the bbq but have even better sides.
Sweet Lews is serviceable bbq. The people who say midwood or noble make me want to die from cringe.
Landed in Charlotte from San Diego about two hours ago, currently at Smoke Pit. Thank you, reddit users. You are the real heroes. In this instance.
Waiting 2 hours for the food truck is better than waiting 4 hours in peachland. If you want their food, you’re going to have to wait.
But it is by far the best bbq in the area.
Hey all! I'm so excited to be moving to Charlotte in less than a week! Looking for good BBQ that's NOT a chain restaurant. (We had visited a couple BBQ places that were chains, and weren't impressed. Honestly, tho, chain restaurants just don't impress me anymore, anyway.) We will be moving to the Steele Creek area. TIA!
The further you get outside of Charlotte, the better bbq you can find. All the places I’ve found are “decent” chains. Jim n nicks, smoke pit, Mac’s, etc. there aren’t many hole in the wall places, at least that I’ve found, until you get about an hour away from the city.
It’s true. Charlotte itself hasn’t had tons of BBQ spots over the years. It’s not like there were a bunch of small bbq joints here thirty years ago that just disappeared. One needs to venture outside of the city if they’re looking for old school authentic bbq.
Mallard Creek Church BBQ but that's only once in October. And you actually need to be there before the event when they do all the smoking to get it fresh. It's been around longer than I have and I'm 41.
drive down 77 south and go to the dixie pig in rock hill. their bbq is SO good + their banana pudding is to die for.
Smoke Pit and Mac’s aren’t hole-in-the-wall, but calling them chains is a stretch. They’re both locally owned with a handful of locations in the metro area. Mac’s just recently expanded to Greenville and Raleigh.
Jim N Nick’s started in Birmingham and has 50+ stores all over the southeast.
Salisbury/Lexington are gonna be your best bets for authentic NC BBQ. Jon Gs is great but it’s more Texas style.
College BBQ in Salisbury is the best around, imo.
IYKYK. I used to live in Salisbury and that place is about the only thing I miss there. With a cheerwine? Mmmm.
I almost never see it mentioned, maybe because it is a hole in the wall, but Lancaster’s in Huntersville doesn’t suck
This is a good mention for North Charlotte BBQ, but tbh Lancaster's has slid a bit in the last 10 years. They've had a number of management changes and while they're still good, I end up preferring going to the Crazy Pig in Davidson.
My sleeper pick though is that guy with a smoker outside the Cashions on Sam Furr Rd
Their bbq is great, but their sides are subpar.
Even if you don’t make it out on a Saturday, they typically do a pop up once a week at a local brewery when it gets a bit warmer out. Still has lines, but always worth the wait.
So was just wondering about y'all opinions on this. I'm a huge fan of Korean bbq and Korean food in general. I am partial to Letsmeat but also have Iron Dish as a close second. What do you guys think?
I was just thinking about if there are any good Korean BBQ places around here. I saw MOA in uptown and was curious, glad to hear it's good. I'll have to give it a shot later this week.
704 BBQ. Not as insane as Letsmeat, plenty of parking.
Was going to comment this! In the back of a random shopping center in Pineville but worth it
Is 704 all you can eat? I have never been
Was going to say this as well. My wife and I went a few weeks ago and we were very impressed!
I dig Iron Dish a lot, definitely my favorite. Have yet to try 704. It's definitely bougie, but MOA is good! Reminds me of high end Korean places from when I used to live out there. Depends on the vibe you are trying to have.
Also, not BBQ, but if it is reopened the Korean restaurant in the Super G Mart off Independence is really good! Also, Choi's Korean is amazing too, but also not BBQ.
Edit: Also Bulgogi Box in SouthEnd is great! Their bibimbap is the best in town, and they have good cocktails too. Very nice owners, I highly recommend them. Personally I like the hot stone pot bibimpap fyi.
Dea Bak in Mint Hill is pretty good. Way to small I’m hoping the move into a bigger space once Big Guys Pizza moves out.
Not bbq. But for some legit Korean dishes check out daebak Korean in mint hill. Small family place.
I ACCIDENTALLY stumbled into MOA while looking for (and forgetting) that JJ Red Hot's was no longer uptown...
I still think about that meal. MOA was amazing!
It's definitely not MOA. They literally are overpriced, don't let you cook your own food, and caused an allergic reaction to my friend after we told them no mushrooms and gave us the hardest time after we asked for new utensils to prevent contamination. They also forgot the dessert we ordered.
Try the one in South End! ;P
But, curiously, what didn't you like? I've never had a bad meal there. And their kimchi bloody mary is great. It isn't awe-inspiring, Michelin star food, but it is really good imo. Obviously we can have differing opinions, and I wonder what yours is? What didn't you enjoy?
704 Korean bbq in pineville is good. Same owners as iron dish I'm pretty sure. BBQ.Chichen in arboretum off pineville Mathews road has Korean fried chicken that is super good.
Your brewery recommendations knocked it out of the park yesterday! Divine was next level. Any thoughts on good bbq?
Thanks,
I think The Smoke Pit is the best in the area.
I've never understood why Charlotte doesnt have better bbq options. Obviously we're better off than some other cities, but a city that lies on the border of 2 distinct BBQ styles in a BBQ heavy area, just seems weird that we dont have more top tier options.
This was probably my biggest disappointment after moving to Charlotte. It just makes so much sense the bbq scene would be amazing there.
Coming from Miami, Charlotte has a pretty interesting food scene for this region of the country. Yeah the BBQ places are sparse but they are not that bad. South Carolina ain’t too far and NC won’t be making waves in bbq cuisine anytime soon, so I enjoy the wide variety here.
Yup Smoke Pit is the best in the Charlotte metro.
Midwood Smokehouse is where all the celebrities go when they come to town. I love it!
Without question the best I've had in Charlotte.
I like the Smoke Pit in Concord, Sweet Lew’s, Ray Nathan’s in Gastonia. Someone mentioned yesterday that Big Tiny’s in Mooresville is worth the drive.
Sweet Lew’s is garbage. Worst bbq I’ve ever had. Brisket was dried out leather and the ribs were all fat. Terrible.
Sweet Lew's is either the best or the worst. I have had it twice and the first time was the best brisket ive ever had, the second was inedible trash.
Hot damn I’ve been looking for Texas style brisket. Usually drive down to Charleston for my fix
A lot of noble smoke recommendations - some of the highest prices and smallest portions I’ve seen. There’s no reason brisket should cost that much for like 4 or 5 pretty small slices. The quality is there but everything else was pretty disappointing. Ever left a bbq place hungry? Sounds ridiculous.
Lancaster’s BBQ is pretty good and has two locations. One is on Beatties Ford Rd in Huntersville and the other is on Rinehardt Rd in Mooresville. Not exactly in Charlotte but in the area! Also, The Smoke Pit in Concord.
Maybe you answered that question a hundred time already but..
I'm on a roadtrip with my friends from Montreal and tomorrow we're hitting Charlotte for a day.
Tried some ribs and pulled pork in Memphis last week and god damn it was incredible.
Heard some very good things about Carolina BBQs and I absolutly need to try it, where are the very best spot??
The Smoke Pit in Concord is amazing! It can be little pricey but you get your money's worth. I also think Midwood Smokehouse in Plaza Midwood is solid.
Midwood Smokehouse is elite. It's a little more elevated than your typical hole in the wall BBQ spot but still true to BBQ roots. Some of the best I've ever had
You must not have ever had good BBQ if midwood is elite to you
Never had anything bad there!
The stock market sandwich gives you pork, brisket, AND sausage, enough for 2 meals!
I'll have to check that out. Last time i went there I had a 2nd meal worth of leftovers
Personal opinion but I don’t think there are any great ones in Charlotte. Gastonia and Shelby have some though. Bridges, ROs, and Kyle Fletcher’s
Hit the road with the lads and hit up Lexington bbq.
Glad you enjoyed it, they are my go to place for Brisket.
There is also a Smoke Pit in Monroe, straight out 74, a little closer than the Concord store.
Yeah if you’re intent on BBQ hit up Smoke Pit in concord roughly 20 mins outside the city.
Don’t go to the smoke pit in concord this week! I’m pretty sure they are closed until Friday for renovations!!!
Me and some friends are visiting Charlotte and are downtown and need a good spot for quality authentic NC bbq if anyone has any suggestions that would be great
Found solution: Midwood Smokehouse
There is no authentic pulled pork vinegar based bbq in charlotte proper. it’s all fancified.
All the BBQ places in Charlotte I've been to feel designed to make visitors more comfortable and match expectations. Way smokier than what I normally think of with NC BBQ, where the smoke compliments the sauce. NC BBQ that doesn't need sauce is like a Philly that doesn't need cheese. Meat options other than BBQ or chicken. Hushpuppies and slaw as optional sides vs part of the plate/tray. No chopped up bits of bark mixed in. The slaw is different and no BBQ slaw option.
That said, the bar is still much higher than out of state in my experience and for a lot of visitors it's probably good enough. But if you go to Midwood and order the brisket with fries and Mac n cheese you didn't really have "NC BBQ" as we're famous for
Only BBQ you will find around uptown isn’t NC BBQ, and isn’t in uptown but the options are
Midwood smokehouse in plaza, much like it’s name it’s pretty mid
noble smoke, where you’re paying $18 for a plate that’s only a quarter full and owned by a homophobic piece of shit.
You want the good shit you either drive to Lexington about an hour away, or settle for slightly worse but still delicious places in Gastonia. If you got the Gastonia route I’d suggest Kyle Fletchers
OP, when are you visiting? The Lexington Barbecue Festival is this weekend. It’s about an hour’s drive from Charlotte, but you’d have your choice of dozens of the best barbecue establishments. You could also ride Amtrak, if you are so inclined.
There's no good NC style place in charlotte, best bet is smoke pit in concord/gastonia or going to Lexington for the legitimate experience
Gastonia is probably your best, close by bet, Kyle Fletchers, ROs, Black's BBQ, they're all the real NC experience.
The Smoke Pit in Concord is absolutely legit. 🤌🏿
Yeah I love smoke pit, everything they have is killer. But my 100% authentic NC bbq experience is an older, run down place with wood paneling on the wall and staff that talk like they've smoked every cigarette in NC at least once, and an absurd amount of old NASCAR memorabilia
I consider this to be more Texas style than Carolina style BBQ, but I agree it excellent bbq
Maybe the only place in the area that requires no sauce to be great.
Bubbas on Sunset about the only authentic NC bbq left in town. But I agree about going to Lexington.
Bubbas is the right style but his bbq is definitely frozen and reheated. It's not bad but not good.
There's none in uptown you'll have to look elsewhere
I'm going to be in Charlotte this weekend for a work thing, but I'm going to be free on Saturday. Looking for things to do, I saw there's a BBQ festival happening in town. Anyone have any experience with it? I'm just looking for something interesting to do with my free day, so other recommendations are definitely appreciated!
$135 to go for 4 hours of lines on Saturday? F that. Go to lex and you can have the best q in the NC area and not need tickets.
That was 100% my thought as well. I don't think I even looked at the prices beyond knowing there is a charge and it being just a 4-Hour thing in the afternoon and that's it?! Come on!
That said; anyone recommend any good barbecue places on the northeast (Concord) side of Charlotte?
Smoke pit-concord is the one that comes to mind
The best BBQ in NC is towards the coast, specifically south east NC, imo. Lexington is good too though for sure
WTF? $135? You couldn't possibly eat enough to account for 1/4 of that in 4 hours unless Wolfgang Puck made it all himself.
Jesus the beer festival isnt anywhere near that much
Don’t you mean Franklin from Austin, TX?
At $53 through Groupon for a single person I'd think about it but probably would end up feeling ripped off. https://www.groupon.com/deals/gl-carolina-bbq-festival
I haven’t been, but that lineup of pitmasters has some big names on the bbq scene.
Lexington has the best, biggest, and longest running bbq festival, but this looks really neat. May have to venture uptown myself.
It's not one of those fake bbq festivals that are actually competitions where nobody's selling any food to the public, is it?
The one up in Lexington for BBQ was a no-go, all they had was a sandwich and you couldn't even get sauces to try. No cook off, pit BBQ set ups, you hate to see it.
Big Tinys in Moorsville for some tasty Texas Style bbq
You're not alone, I've seen plenty people say this before. But to me Big Tiny's is like Sonny's fast-food style bbq. Awful. I'm not a BBQ connoisseur so maybe it's a me-thing. But when people compare it to Smoke Pit I'm absolutely baffled.
I would not have guessed that Charleston would become one of my favorite cities for BBQ but here we are. Favorites:
What did we miss?
I know about the different traditional kinds of Carolina BBQ but I'm uninformed on how that plays out in restaurants in Charleston. According to a map I found HERE, it looks like Charleston is in the Mustard region, are all of these restaurants mustard-focused? Or is it much more of a melting pot?
Lewis is Texas-style. Rodney Scott is whole hog South Carolina (vinegar base in the meat, put whatever you want on it when you are served). Home Team has amazing wings and great drinks (get a Gamechanger) and the barbecue is well rounded. Palmyra borrows heavily from Tex-mex but I don’t know what they consider themselves. King BBQ is Asian fusion. Duck is superb.
The pitmaster at Palmyra would say they have Puerto Rican, Texan, and South Carolinian influences. Super good barbecue.
Home team smoked wings are where it’s at
You missed Swig & Swine... some of the best pulled pork in the south. Their hot bbq sauce is really good. Also, the sides are crazy good. Brisket n beans, mac n cheese, corn pudding, brunswick stew... I would put those 4 sides up against any out there. Super affordable too.
Edit: Smh, how could I forget to mention this... the house made pork rinds & pimento cheese are dynamite.
What's the thing with the magnificent bark in the first picture?
Looks great!
That looks like the beef cheeks over at Palmira
Palmria blew my mind. If you didnt get the hash and rice go back
Not BBQ but the next time you're in Charleston swing up 17 a bit and go to the McClellanville Diner. Real good low country cooking.
Got a friend coming up from Michigan and he wants to try Carolina barbecue for the first time! Where do you recommend?!
Smoke Pit in Concord, 100%. Best BBQ in the Charlotte area. Hell, probably the best restaurant in Concord, period (not that it's much of an accomplishment - Concord is kind of a good restaurant desert).
Sweet Lew's. Their pork is almost always great. Their vinegar sauce is not traditional, but it's good. Their non-carolina stuff like brisket is usually very good too.
Bit outside of town, but Kyle Fletchers is worth a visit.
Beyond that, Lexington isn't far - #1 is great. And Ayden NC doesn't feel very far once you dip into that tray of bbq at Skylight Inn. Best in the state (in my opinion).
Love the Ayden shoutout. Skylight and B’s are probably too far for this friend from Michigan, but that would be the NC version of BBQ Mecca if anyone wants to make the pilgrimage.
Hard disagree about Kyle Fletchers, that is the most overrated place I have ever been to. Plus it’s in Gastonia.
Maybe I've been lucky. Only had it 5-6 times. Pretty good sandwiches each time.
But yeah, Gastonia.
I have been extremely disappointed when I’ve gone to Sweet Lew’s. It looks like a BBQ spot, smells like a BBQ spot, but good BBQ it is not. Solid brisket and hush puppies, but nothing to rave about.
OP - I’d say it’s worth the quick drive up I-85 to Lexington to get some real deal stuff. For my money, best BBQ within 90 minutes is the Real-Q (formerly named Little Richards) in Winston, but not sure even I would make a 3 hour day trip when you can just hit Lex Vegas in half the time.
If someone’s willing to drive to Ayden, might as well go to B’s BBQ in Greenville as well. There’s a reason they sell out every day by 2 or 3 pm. Skylight Inn is badass too though.
Another vote for Sweet Lew’s. I also like the Smoke Pit in Concord and Monroe.
Red bridges or Lexington bbq if you’re open to driving a bit from clt.
Red has a better sign, but I think Alston Bridges has better bbq.
This happened to me after I went to Texas several years back. It pretty much ruined my concept of what good BBQ is. Restaurants I used to eat at weekly when I lived in SC I stopped even bothering to go to.
If you are willing to drive, Scott's Bar-B-Que is a must. Located in Hemingway, South Carolina; three hours away from Charlotte.
