What Redditors are Saying

Best Bowling Balls for Oily Lanes

TL;DR

  • Motiv Subzero Forge and Raptor Rush are recommended for heavy oil conditions [1:4].
  • Ebonite Game Breaker series (GB5, GB4) is praised for performance on medium to heavy oil [2:1][2:2].
  • Black Widow Ghost offers strong hook potential for medium-heavy oil [4:1].

Heavy Oil Conditions

For tackling heavy oil lanes, bowlers with low rev rates should consider balls that offer strong traction and hook potential. The Motiv Subzero Forge is highlighted for its reactive 2000 grit coverstock and powerful symmetrical core, providing a strong arc to the pocket [1:4]. Additionally, the Motiv Raptor Rush offers an angular path through long oil patterns [1:4]. Surface preparation is crucial; applying a lower grit surface like 1000 can enhance traction on oily lanes [1:2].

Ebonite Game Breaker Series

The Ebonite Game Breaker series, particularly the GB5 and GB4 hybrid, is frequently recommended for medium to heavy oil conditions. These balls are described as solid performers on fresh oil and are considered good benchmark options for league play [2:1][2:2]. Their versatility makes them suitable for bowlers returning to the sport after a hiatus.

Black Widow Ghost

The Black Widow Ghost is another strong contender for medium-heavy oil lanes. It provides a clean roll but responds quickly to friction, making it effective in transitioning from oil to dry parts of the lane [4:3]. Its ability to handle varying oil conditions makes it a reliable choice for bowlers looking for consistent performance.

Additional Recommendations

Other balls mentioned include the Hammer Vibe series, such as the Ocean Vibe, which is suitable for low to medium oil conditions [5:1]. For those dealing with drier lanes, options like the IQ Tour Ruby and Hustle M-M are suggested for their weaker cover/core combinations, allowing for better control and accuracy [5:2][5:3].

When selecting a bowling ball for oily lanes, it's essential to consider both the ball's specifications and personal bowling style, including speed and rev rate. Consulting with a professional shop operator (PSO) for drilling advice can further optimize performance.

ORIGINAL POST

Hello so I have a rev rate of around 200-250 and speed of 15-16 with a 15 pound ball. I'm really looking to find a ball that can conquer insanely heavy oil conditions for tournaments. I'm throwing a Attention Star S2 and when I add revs on oily conditions I get 0 hook. I have to let the ba fall off my hand and hook it by itself and still at thar barely get any. Also any tips I can ask my PSO when drilling.

Surface is your friend. If you have low revs and you're bowling on heavy oil you need to put a 1000 grit surface or maybe even lower to get traction. The S2 will still hook in oil with the proper surface prep.

Well I has thrown fresh 500 on it before and It still wasn't doing much. It could be the way I'm throwing it also.

100% correct, I added some surface, and it reads mids and hooks hard on the back. It's on the medium side out of box after it Lane shines. Surface brings it too life!! 1,000 is good recommendation

The attention star S2 is one of the strongest balls currently on the market. If you are on tournament conditions with a heavy oil pattern, speed is king. You don’t need that much speed if it’s a longer shot I would suggest getting your speed down to 13 letting the ball see fiction more than just skidding over it at 15-16mph

You are a balanced bowler (neither rev nor speed dominant).

I would recommend the Motiv Subzero Forge. It has a monster reactive 2000 grit coverstock, low RG of 2.47, High Diff of .055 and a powerful symmetrical core which should give you a nice arc to the pocket.

The Motiv Raptor Rush is another option. It's a brilliant asymetric Pearl reactive that will skid through long oil and snap to the pins. This option will give you a more angular path to the pocket.

These options differ from your current Attention Star Asym reactive since one is a Symetrical reactive and the other is an Asymetric Pearl. Also, if you're adding speed, you're becoming speed dominant. The Raptor Rush is more suited to that style. If you're speed dominant, the Motiv Evoke is worth a look. It will read the lane closer to the pins and find the friction better. The Evoke also functions well for balanced players and should give you some room for either style.

Hope these options and/or logic helps.

I’m in a similar situation to you as I just started back with bowling. I bought an Ebonite Game Breaker 4 hybrid. I watched a video about it being a good benchmark ball, and so far I’ve really enjoyed rolling this one in league.

Bowling Ball Arsenal

Hey guys, I’m relatively new to bowling, it’s been about 7 months of consistent bowling for me, I have a Tough Reality overseas ball but I originally started on a Vibe. I was wondering about getting more bowling balls before I try league but I have no clue what to look for. I was looking to get a Sublime so I can move down when the oil starts to break down but my Tough Reality handles medium oil very well despite it being described as a heavy oil ball, does this mean I should I pick up a ball a step above the Tough Reality? Apologies if I’m babbling on but it’s all a bit confusing to me

Honestly, if you've only done open bowling, you have most likely always bowled on burnt lanes, and you don't have a true feel for what light/medium/heavy oil actually looks like.

Nobody starting out on leagues needs more than 2 balls. And to add to that, a decent bowler won't ever need more than 2 balls for a house shot league. I average between 215 and 225 on house shot, and 90%+ of the time I'm only using one ball (plus a spare ball) for the whole night.

I "felt the need" for more balls when I got to about a 190 average. Then as I progressed, I realized I was just blaming my equipment when my own form was the real problem.

All that said, there's nothing WRONG with treating yourself to a new ball as often as you can reasonably afford it. But I would say that while still learning (say, until you reach a solid 200 average at least on house shot), too many balls can actually add confusion and it ends up being counterproductive.

That’s good advice! I’ll continue with what I have, but if I were to buy a new ball I was thinking of an Ion Max or a Physix Blackout. Do you have any personal recommendations

Take my advice with a huge grain of salt, because I'm no pro and definitely not a coach... but if it were me, I'd work with the vibe for now, and join a league.

Any casual league worth it's salt will have numerous experienced bowlers who are willing and eager to share advice with new bowlers who are serious about improving their game. And that's how a lot of us become better bowlers!

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone with three balls before. Congratulations!

On a serious note, the black widow is good for medium-heavy oil, I don’t know what motiv that is, and the Rhino is good for medium oil conditions.

1 upvotes on reddit
Lburgtn · 29 days ago

I think in order of strength strongest to weakest, you would be looking at the Black Widow Ghost, Supra Rally, Teal Rhino.

From what I have seen from the Ghost, it is pretty clean, but responds pretty quickly to friction. I have not seen any of the Supra's go down the lane so I really can't say much other than that line is listed as Light-Medium oil. I have a Teal Rhino and was using it on drier conditions until I drilled an Arctic Vibe. My Teal was also pretty clean, but slower off the friction than a lot of the other stuff I have.

1 upvotes on reddit
Illustrious_Park_512 · 1 month ago

You have two pearls and a very weak solid. The Evoke Hysteria (I think that's the Motiv one) is your top one, then the Widow, then the Rhino. Widow would be the one I'd start with and if it blows by the head pin, go to the Rhino, if it doesn't get there, Evoke.

Switching from wet lanes drier lanes, looking for ball suggestions

Posted by MrP0tat0H3ad · in r/Bowling · 1 year ago

Equipment:

  • 900 Global Reality
  • Storm Physicx (this one has got to be around 4 years old)
  • Plastic ball

I currently bowl in 2 leagues.

The first league I’ve been in for about 5 years and has lanes that are notoriously super oily. I average about 200 there.

Recently, I joined a second league with drastically different (drier) lanes. In this league I’ve been struggling to maintain an average of 170. I typically need to throw much faster just to get my ball to make it to the pocket, otherwise I hit Brooklyn or snap to the gutter. I’m usually gassed by the 3rd game.

100% of the time I usually use the Reality and plastic for spares, and Im looking to replace my Physicx with something a little better for the drier conditions. Looking for suggestions!

Im happy to provide more info as needed

Good ball for heavy oil.

Posted by Exportedorca · in r/Bowling · 2 years ago

My local ally loves to run heavy patterns, great long term horrible when you are first on the lane. I usually lead with a house ball then after 4 frames the oil is dispersed enough to really play on. Any balls that almost “absorb” oil or just really good at redistributing oil across the lane.

Can't speak for all brands, but for the Storm Umbrella, the Gem is usually top dog for strength. Earliest and roundest. The Proton Physix beneath that as a more continuous shape. Then the Global 900 Reality and Storm Super Nova handle equal oil, but offer a longer and sharper breakpoint, for more overall shape and backend. Those are the 4 strongest heavy oil balls from Storm at the moment.

Very dependent on your style, game, revs, ballspeed, etc. Personally, I bowl 2H and inherently higher rev, but my regular house lanes are super heavy on league nights.

For me, my starter games my go-to ball on any kind of heaver pattern I roll a widow legend or my old widow 2.0. Both are great on high oil and love to just eat up the oil (especially the 2.0).

The Legend has a really snappy late reaction for me whereas the 2.0 has more of a smooth arc all the way through. In competitive situations, even in league, the 2.0 is actually a really good asset if I'm bowling with another super high-rev person or a bowler that is low rev and works up the middle as I can kind of work through the middle of their pattern and still adjust and adapt easier while everyone else's patterns to the pocket get worn out.

Again, all depends on your game type, but both balls are super controllable and work well in medium and high oil patterns.

Bowling Ball Recommendation for High Oil lanes, and good spare balls

Any plastic ball for spares if you're serious about improving your game. Drill it with the weight block pin in palm and it will move 0 boards. Polish it with some slip agent and it'll go dead straight even with 90 degrees of axis rotation on any pattern or condition.

My favorite balls to use for high oil ratio patterns are Summit, Phaze II, and NU Blue Hammer. Phaze II will be the most consistent smooth shape with a nice controlled back end. Doesn't react too hard off the dry and smooths out the puddle in the middle and reads through carry down well. If the backends are flying, I'll pull out the NU Blue or Summit depending on the length of the pattern. Summit does better on short length high volumes and NU Blue likes longer lower ratio patterns.

If you're just on typical house shot, you could get away with just the Phaze II or NU Blue depending on your stats (revs/speed). If you're rev dominant, you may enjoy the look of the NU Blue on typical house shot than the Phaze II that you may struggle to control (it reads the lane early and has a good amount of hook potential).

Any opinions on Track Theorem or Motiv Evoke?

2 upvotes on reddit
Ok_Inspection_8203 · 1 year ago

I personally stay away from asym balls as they are more temperamental to hand position changes. If you struggle being consistent with axis tilt/rotation, then I wouldn't bother honestly.

A little too much up the back of an asym and they like to shoot through the spot. Too much around it and it jumps off the spot way too hard. On a hard pattern, that's not what you're really looking for, so I tend to avoid them altogether and stick with symmetrical cores.

HK22 coverstock in the Theorem is nice though. Probably the best pearl cover Brunswick has put out in years and rivals SPI covers.

If we're defining benchmark balls as symmetrical solids that read strong in the mid lane and have a continuous shape on the backend:

GB5
Optimum Idol
Phaze II
Track Cypher
Venom Shock (or the new stronger ExJ version)
Hazmat Solid

Amun672 · 1 year ago

Following this conversation, would you consider a black venom as a replacement for the venom shock in the benchmark category?

1 upvotes on reddit
S
schnozberry · 1 year ago

The Black Venom is a bit different as it has an asymmetric core. I think the Venom Shock ExJ is the same symmetrical core as the OG Venom Shock with a stronger cover that can handle more oil, so it'd be a better fit for the typical smooth and strong shape people expect from a benchmark ball. The Black Venom would react to the friction a bit faster, but likely a bit less continuous because of the asymmetric design. It's designed to be a "benchmark" asym. More comparable to a Storm Ion Pro than a Phaze II.

Just go for one of the GOAT balls. Some balls have been manufactured year after year after year for a reason. I am partial to the Venom Shock but also consider Phaze 2, IQ Tour, Hyroad, Zen. The Purple Hammer and the Pitch Black are on the GOAT list as well too, but you might not want a urethane ball for your benchmark ball.

I also recently got a Hyroad and I love it. Great ball for early and mid game. I have the IQ Ruby as well which is a child of the IQ Tour. Also an outstanding ball

AI Answer

🤖

best bowling balls for oily lanes

Key Considerations for Bowling Balls on Oily Lanes

  1. Coverstock Material:

    • Reactive Resin: Best for oily conditions as it provides better traction and hook potential.
    • Solid vs. Pearl: Solid coverstocks generally grip the lane better, while pearl coverstocks can provide more length and a sharper backend reaction.
  2. Core Design:

    • Look for balls with a strong core design that enhances hook potential and provides a stable roll. Asymmetrical cores often offer more aggressive reactions on oily lanes.
  3. Surface Finish:

    • A lower grit surface (around 500-1000) can help the ball grab the lane better, while a higher grit (2000+) may be better for drier conditions. Consider adjusting the surface to match lane conditions.
  4. Weight and Fit:

    • Ensure the ball weight is comfortable for you (typically 10% of your body weight) and that it fits your hand properly to maximize control and power.

Recommended Bowling Balls:

  1. Storm Code Red:

    • Features a solid reactive coverstock and a strong core, making it excellent for oily lanes with a smooth and controlled hook.
  2. Hammer Black Widow 2.0:

    • Known for its aggressive reaction on oily lanes, this ball has a solid coverstock and a strong core that provides excellent traction.
  3. Roto Grip Halo:

    • Offers a strong mid-lane read and a powerful backend reaction, making it a great choice for heavy oil conditions.
  4. Brunswick Kingpin:

    • This ball has a solid coverstock and a unique core design that provides a strong hook and excellent control on oily lanes.

Recommendation: If you're frequently bowling on oily lanes, investing in a high-quality reactive resin ball with a solid coverstock, like the Storm Code Red or Hammer Black Widow 2.0, will give you the best performance and adaptability.
