Western-Style Brunch Options
For those seeking American-style brunch, there are several options available. The Original Pancake House in Gangnam offers a menu similar to IHOP or Denny's [3:3]. Other notable mentions include Travelmaker in Hongdae and Butterfinger Pancakes in Sinsa
[3:6]
[3:7]. Itaewon is also home to numerous brunch cafes, such as Summerlane, which provide a variety of Western breakfast dishes
[3:2].
Traditional Korean Breakfast
While traditional Korean breakfast isn't as distinct as Western breakfast, there are places that serve typical Korean morning meals. Soup (gukbap) and porridge (juk) are common breakfast items, and you can find these at various local restaurants [5:2]
[5:3]. Insadong has a restaurant called 한국민속촌 장터 인사동점 that serves traditional Korean breakfast dishes
[5:1].
Brunch Cafes and Hangover Soups
Brunch cafes are becoming more popular in Seoul, although many open late, around 11 AM [1:1]. Nosh at Sindebang and Ginger & Treacle are recommended for quality brunch experiences
[1:2]. Additionally, hangover soup places, known as 해장국, often operate 24 hours or open early, providing hearty meals suitable for breakfast
[2:5]
[2:6].
Convenience Store and Bakery Options
For early risers, convenience stores and bakeries like Paris Baguette and Tous Les Jours offer pastries, sandwiches, and coffee [1:5]
[1:6]. These options are practical for those looking for a quick bite before exploring the city.
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
If you're looking for a unique brunch experience, consider exploring areas like Seongsu or Sangsu, where trendy cafes might offer distinctive menus. Utilizing apps like Naver Maps can help locate nearby brunch spots with good reviews.
I’m going to Seoul, Busan, and Gyeonggju next week (will be there for two weeks) and am wondering how breakfast is in Korea.
I like to avoid hotel breakfast and was wondering if cafes are a popular place for breakfast or any type of street food at the markets.
Thanks in advance for any replies!
EDIT: Thank you all for the great recommendations and advice! Everything was very helpful. I might have to try all of it.
Korean food:
Kimbap shops open early. Gukbap (soup) is the go-to hangover cure here.
Non-Korean food:
People eat cafe stuff, mostly bagels, egg sandwiches, etc.
Quality brunch:
Lots of good brunch cafes, but many open late. Check the hours on Naver maps. One that opens very early and that is very good is Nosh at Sindebang. But not a likely location for a tourist. Synday brunch in Ginger & Treacle is a treat, but Goyang is another unlikely location for a tourist. LucyD near Sangsu is excellent.
Korea doesn’t get going until 11 AM. Even commuters, the only thing open is like Paris baguette for pastries and coffee or just coffee stands. Or Starbucks.
Western breakfast is a leisurely, trendy weekend thing.
And Koreans eat the same Korean stuff for breakfast as they do for other meals, no distinction.
When I was there back in 2016, we thought it was hilarious how hard it was to find breakfast. Cafes wouldn’t open until close to lunch time. The few places we found that WERE open didn’t sell what we considered to be breakfast food. We ended up eating from convenience stores in the morning.
Me too, and truth be told, convenience store food isn't bad at all, not comparable to Japan but still very serviceable.
A lot of their fare is considered snack food but I suggest Paris Baguette, Tous Les Jours, other western-style bakeries like that. They also have sandwiches. Plus coffee.
I hope you’re not looking for American-style breakfast. The rest of world generally doesn’t eat like that.
So breakfast isn't really a thing in Korea. At least the way we think about it in the west. I do see more and more brunch places that are popping up but typically they don't open until like 11am and it's hard to find "good" ones. I'm a huge breakfast food lover so i'm quite often disappointed haha
If you're an early riser I think you'll be disappointed in the selection. There are often street toast places but i'm not sure you'll find any that are open early. Maybe there are more places in Seoul now but it's been a few months since I spent time there. Hopefully someone can give you some good recommendations.
Whenever I travel within Korea I do tend to book hotels with breakfast included because it's worth it for those days when you wanna get up at 6am to get an early start to sightseeing. That being said i've had really good hotel breakfasts and really terrible ones too haha. Also there's always mcdonald's if all else fails.
We're planning our first trip to Seoul next April and are so excited.
What is the breakfast scene in Korea like? We are well-traveled in Japan and are obsessed with finding good breakfast buffets. I'm talking Japanese aunties hired by a random hotel to serve up an incredible traditional spread. We're not as into things like a luxury Western breakfast at the Four Seasons.
Is there a similar hotel breakfast culture in Korea? If so, do you have any recommendations for relatively affordable hotels in Seoul (<$200/night) with killer breakfast buffets?
You won’t be finding anything good. Breakfast is not a thing here like you’re expecting.
The western hotels all have brunch and it is INSANELY expensive, like 150,000 KRW+++ because it’s a flex for families and birthdays. BUT the brunches are not like sexy Korean food, with amazing technique. It’s seafood and meat and Chinese food bc that’s what Koreans want. Very little western anything.
Not to mention for actual breakfast, Koreans eat at home or eat nothing. And if they eat at home, breakfast is the same menu items as other times of day. If they eat on the go, it’s always bread or yogurt or fruit.
And NOTHING is open before 11a except chain cafes which means chain bakery lol.
Literally when I travel out of Korea two things are VERY SPECIAL to find: breakfast and good pizza lollll (yes these exist but I’m too busy to go an hour one way to Hongdae or Itaewon from my Gangnam bubble)
EDIT TO ADD: the Korean breakfast at basic hotels has its own term called 조식. Search it in NAVER and you’ll see blog review and it’s literally like ramen noodles, toast, and eggs. And Koreans GO CRAZY FOR IT.
Mike knows what up in SK ... I have been there many time too.. I love buffet too .but yeah its a tough one in korea.
For breakfast.. I love to go these hang over soup places I am sure there will be one that is open near where ever your staying . Good cheap food and sometimes entertaining as hungover koreans will be in there having soup and drinking soju.
I have no idea what time this places opens or if its good but I did have it saved as try if possible list https://www.instagram.com/reel/DL\_Mi0VStLQ/.
Mike,
Mike I m curious if you been to dining one? I am also with you on pizza. I gave up on Pizza and Italian in korean long ago. Koreans love pizza though.
Crazy for plain old ramen? Lol!
Nine Trees has a great breakfast with a variety of food, rice, soup , veggies, yogurt, omelet bar. We loved staying in the one in Insadong. Make sure to book the room with breakfast included as that is a better deal than paying for it each morning.
Korea just doesn't do breakfast the way the West does. Even western style coffee shops don't open early, and the food is often sub-par.
Surprised at all of the comments saying that Korean breakfast restaurants do not exist and that nothing is open before 11am. Perhaps because they are usually unassuming restaurants in older buildings with no accommodations for English speakers. I realize that is more what you are looking for since you're hoping it would be part of a hotel operation.
If you are interested in traditional Korean breakfast restaurants, find a 백반집 near you (search the term on naver) and give few different ones a try in your stay. They usually only have one or two choices of mains with a bunch of side dishes.
Even if you decide this isn't for you, I would not listen to the recommendations of chain cafés for breakfast. You really would be better off going to the higher priced hotel buffets or western breakfast restaurants at that point. The hotel breakfasts have countless reviews in English with photos and videos (everywhere from Google to tiktok) for you to compare prices, value, options. Most do offer more than enough Korean mains and side dishes to give you the opportunity to learn new things you like while also having western or Chinese dishes.
This is the way OP.
also, there are 해장국 (hot soup- aka hangover soup) places that runs 24hr or opens like 6am. try to look for 아침식사 합니다 ("we serve breakfast") signage.
best thing you can do is get a hotel or Airbnb that has a small kitchen so you can make breakfast. If you don't have that, get some pastries day before, find a Isaac toast or a Starbucks. Even those aren't often open until 8.
Yes, sometimes it is best to make your own.
trying to find some american style brunch spots. I know of one called maple top in seongsu that’s about it. would appreciate any recs :D
Have you searched Naver? There are brunch cafes all over the place these days.
i know lots of brunch places exist but i specifically wanted american and idk i couldn’t find any i looked on tiktok too
Weird. There’s a few in Itaewon.
I just looked for brunch near Itaewon station and at least 10 popped up. You’re not looking hard enough.
Someone mentioned the pancake house. Summerlane is one
Original Pancake House in Gangnam
someone mentioned here but there’s a few “original house of pancakes “ in seoul. quite literally just an american brand that expanded overseas, food is exactly whatd you get at ihop/ dennys/ etc. maybe just a bit higher quality
Travelmaker in hongdae.
Great recc^^ The decor is soooo American
Butterfinger pancakes in Sinsa
So cute!
Looks very nice, where is this?
It is located in Gwangalli, and there is also Korean brunch. There is a terrace and the atmosphere is so nice. This place is mimiracrac!
Thanks, makes me want to put Busan back on my plan, had Gwangalli in mind too. Originally trying to do Busan a few days then Japan (from Los Angeles), but seems too much hopping around from one airport to another and one hotel to another, so I crossed Busan off and planning for Japan only.
Krug for brunch hell yeah
광안리 바깥풍경도 멋질텐데~ 음식이 멋집니다~
hi! i was wondering if there are any restaurants in Korea that serve traditional Korean breakfast? like what parents may prepare for their children at home?
I’m not sure if a “korean breakfast restaurant” is really a thing but anywhere that sells porridge, steamed egg, gaeran tostu, rice porridge, fish etcetc altogether (if possible) would be good (:
or if you have a recommendation of a restaurant to eat at in the morning please let me know too x
thank youuu
Korean's are big on breakfast. Most of the soup(tang), gukbap places are breakfast places.
ooooo, okayy thank you!
Koreans actually aren't that big on breakfast and don't really have a breakfast food culture as defined as some other neighboring countries. Juk (congee) is eaten but not like a staple, and you can basically get that in any neighborhood if you search 죽 in Naver and just go to the highest ranked one. Bonjuk is a chain so maybe avoid there. As for toast, Issac toast is popular and some traditional markets and certain areas will have stalls for those, but I really wouldn't seek it out. If you just want a traditional small meal I'd just look for 백반 places near you, that's just like a set meal with soup, banchan, a protein, etc. For breakfast I think if there's one common dish it's probably 국밥 of various sorts, like seollungtang or soondae gukbap. For that I really like 이문설농탕 if you're north of the river and the original location of 이도곰탕 if you're in Gangnam. In general restaurants in Korea really don't have big menus and tend to specialize just on one or two things unless you go to a buffet or family restaurant. You could also go to a hansik buffet open in the morning for a sort of traditional meal feel - again just searching 한식뷔페 will turn up some results.
thank you so much for your reply!! I really appreciate it, a great help!✨🤍
Sure, feel free to ask for more help or recs in Seoul. The food scene here has been getting better and better in the past few years
Koreans are not big on breakfast. They eat the same for breakfast, lunch, and dinner - rice, soup, a little protein (a little piece of fish, or chicken the size of your thumb, or a little beef) among the banchan, and (always) kimchi.
okay thankyouu!
Had was told to us is a typical Korean breakfast while we were in an old tea plantation up near Boseong and Korea Tea Museum. Didn't see like there was a 'traditional' breakfast as everywhere we went, there was a wide variety going from Korean variations on Asian staples like porridge or noodles to Western and Asian pastries.
EDIT: it was actually pretty tasty and by the time we were done, these bowls were basically empty.
ahhhh i see!! looks delicious! thanks for sharing ((:
thank you so much !!😭🤍
There are a ton. That’s the “homeland” of good foreign food haha.
While some may have strong opinions of her, A Fat Girl’s Food Guide did a very good job of covering EVERYTHING foreign near Itaewon. Also check Restaurant Buzz Seoul FB group.
This is helpful, thanks a lot!
Looking for more Korean food though.
When you said breakfast I thought you meant western.
Koreans don’t have their own breakfast food. They eat the same stuff for lunch as they would for breakfast. They also typically eat at home. Mornings in Seoul are DEAD until 10-11a. Yes, millions go to work, but the only places open during commuting time are Starbucks, Paris Baguette, Tous Les Jours (bakeries) and subway station cafes/stands. As far as Korean places open, there’s 김밥천국 kimbap cheonguk aka kimbap heaven which is “korean fast food.” Noodles, rice, soups. Not bad in a pinch.
Furthermore, Itaewon is SUPER DEAD in the AM since it’s generally a late night/weekend place. And there is simply just NO Korean food in Itaewon compared to the average selection in other hoods.
I’m a fan of Flying Pan Blue for breakfast there
Here are some of my favorite cafes:
Pretty mainstream, so I am looking for new places to go in Seoul or Busan!

If you recommend any restaurants please also post them here,

thank you!
Blot coffee!!! Kinda in between hongdae + hapjeong area. Easy walk from both stations, a lil out of the way and quiet because it’s off the main streets.
The coffee is super good, they have oat milk lol, the barista is super nice, very cute inside, and the drop cookies are super delicious too!
I went here almost everyday last trip and it’ll be one of the first places I go back to this time around :)
>Blot coffee
Ooooh they are giving off " we have great coffee" vibes. Thank you!
So abit of backstory - i was there for a month, my wife literally drinks an iced americano everyday, so i looked for a new cafe/takeaway almost daily. My personal favourite would be Hanyakbang. There are way too many to name even in Euljiro alone, I'm just sharing the last few that I went. Just exploring Seoul forest/Seongsu, or Ikseon, so many choices.
Ediya labs, yes i know it's a chain but the flagship is really beautiful.
루프트커피명동
Anthracite
카페 차 성수점
Four stones coffee roasters
커피로스터스세루리안
인사하루앤원데이피치스
Peaches, nice vibes but eh
도렐 성수점텅플
래닛 성수점
There‘s a cafe in Insadong called Cerulean Insa (on Naver maps it’s 세루리안 인사). I specifically searched for this place after having lunch in the area and it did not disappoint. It looks modern on the outside, but it’s a converted hanok on the inside. I enjoyed their coffee more than Cafe Onion.
You should try 853 pork bbq just opposite, it's good.
When I’m back in Seoul, I’ll keep that in mind 😊
Yay I was looking for a good bbq place, thank you
Grandpa Factory Cafe in Seongsu. Came for the name, stayed for the coffee and design.
That whole neighborhood has blown up with a ton of good cafes in the last couple years.
Treehouse?! That's amazing! - i'm drooling at the Hallbong Ade
Near the Hilton Busan, there is a nice coffee shop called Deogmi! The workers are all so nice and they make the experience so pleasant. Plus, their drinks are fantastic!
>Deogmi
Ocean views! Thank you :)
hi! i was wondering if there are any restaurants in Korea that serve traditional Korean breakfast? like what parents may prepare for their children at home?
I’m not sure if a “korean breakfast restaurant” is really a thing but anywhere that sells porridge, steamed egg, gaeran tostu, rice porridge, fish etcetc altogether (if possible) would be good (:
or if you have a recommendation of a restaurant to eat at in the morning please let me know too x
thank youuu
Koreans don’t really have breakfast food. They eat regular food if they have breakfast at all or just a bread product so there aren’t “breakfast restaurants” for the most part.
Parents just make whatever for breakfast.
ahhh okayy thank youu!!
If you're looking for porridge, I do recommend 본죽.The place sells traditional porridges and is very delicious! But yeah, if it's a full one meal you're looking for, 백반집 is the place you should go.
thanks for your recommendation!! 🤗
Any 김밥집 would do. Get some 우동 after a rough night with too much alcohol.
okayy noted !! thank youu ((:
Korean don’t eat porridge often. Home food for breakfast is rice with salted seaweed or rice mixed with fried egg, soy sauce, and sesame oil, Kimchi on top of the spoon. I think these are in almost Korean’s memory. When you’re preparing for school in the morning, Mom put one bite of rice wrapped in salted seaweed into my mouth.
ahhh haha, okayy makes sense, thank youu!!
Try to search 백반집 on Naver. I haven't actually heard of traditional Korean breakfast restaurants but it will be the closest one...
thank you so much✨✨
I’m in yeosu for a couple of days this week and desperately searching for breakfast spots and places to buy coffee that are open early - like 8am or earlier. Also open to recommendations for bars, food, sights etc!
Any tips appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Gam Sam ni da
Probably able to get some coffee at 8am at chains like Mega MGC Coffee. Yeosu Cable Car is nice. Yeosu is famous for kanjang kejang (raw crab marinated in soy sauce/ yangnyeom sauce) - loads of famous restaurants for that, expect queues on weekends.
Most of the chain coffee shops are going to be opening at 8am. I’m an early riser, so I wound up at convenience stores on my morning walks more often than not 😅 For sites, Hyangiram is my favorite spot. Be a long taxi ride (or very long bus ride) to get out there though if you don’t have a car.
Hyangiram is so cool.
Thanks to everyone that commented! Leaving Yeosu today and heading back to Seoul, loved our time here!
Edit: earlier coffee shop we found open is Ko-I coffee. Excellent iced americano, cool aesthetic, and most importantly OPEN AT 7am!!!
Address: 576-9 Gyo-dong
Edit2: other great coffee shops opening a little later (830) are ougo and ikkeulda roasters. They’re located in the same neighborhood and make great espresso
Update - visited Ikkeulda Roasters yesterday and it was awesome. Great coffee and kind owner. Thanks for the recommendation!
Thanks for reporting back and glad you enjoyed it - I will actually be heading back to Yeosu this weekend so might try and check one of these places out!
If your accommodation is in a busy area, most restaurants and franchised coffee shops will be open nearby. An alternative is a convenience store.
McDs is open 24h.
I know that Seoul is not really an early morning city, but can anyone recommend a good breakfast place near Seoul Station. My flight arrives in ICN at 5:30am, which means that I can get to Seoul Station as early as 8am. I'm meeting a friend at 9am.
Are there any good breakfast places around Seoul Station? Or should I just eat at ICN and get to Seoul Station about an hour later?
I remember there was an Issac Toast that opens decently early walkable from Seoul station. Not sure what you’re looking for but it’s thick egg sandwiches.
Near Sookmyung women's university? I went there often for cheap breakfast 🤣
ICN food places are all pretty good. Not sure what you're looking for as a good breakfast in South Korea, as we don't really have much iconic stuff.
there's a place called dabok inside seoul station. opens at 630am. pretty good. and fyi most sullungtang places open early morning.
You’re right about not an early morning city, dare I say it’s neither a breakfast hot spot either tbh. Good luck
one of the four food courts in seoul station would be open at 9am. it's not fancy but has big windows with city view. not delicious. try more decent meal with your friend. :)
