What Redditors are Saying

Best Chairs for Posture

TL;DR

  • Herman Miller chairs, particularly the Embody and Aeron models, are highly recommended for posture and comfort.
  • Consider a standing desk or ergonomic office chair rather than gaming chairs.

Ergonomic Office Chairs

Herman Miller chairs, especially the Embody and Aeron models, are frequently praised for their ergonomic design and comfort. Users have noted that these chairs significantly improve posture and alleviate back pain during long sitting sessions [3:1][3:2][3:3]. While they are expensive, many users believe the investment is worth it for the health benefits [3:4][3:6]. The Steelcase Leap V2 and Haworth Zody are also mentioned as good ergonomic options [3:11].

Standing Desks and Active Sitting

Incorporating a standing desk into your workspace can be beneficial for posture and overall health. Alternating between sitting and standing helps prevent prolonged periods of poor posture [4:1][4:3]. Some users have found success using kitchen counters as makeshift standing desks [4:5]. Additionally, active sitting solutions like yoga ball chairs can encourage better posture, although users may find ways to "cheat" the posture over time [1:4].

Posture Tips

Maintaining good posture involves several key practices: keeping feet flat on the ground, avoiding crossed legs, ensuring knees are at hip level or slightly below, and relaxing shoulders [5:5]. Using armrests correctly can help keep forearms parallel to the ground, but improper use may lead to raised shoulders [5:3][5:4]. Regularly adjusting your position and taking breaks can help maintain good posture throughout the day [4:3].

Avoiding Gaming Chairs

Many commenters advise against purchasing chairs marketed specifically for gaming, as they often lack ergonomic support and durability [3:5][3:8]. Instead, opting for a high-quality office chair designed for ergonomic support is recommended [3:12]. Testing chairs in person to find the best fit for your body type is crucial [3:6].

Are they meant to be used just a few hours per day? I have a common chair and it's giving me back pain.

Ive been using this in the office for about a year now. Mostly work on a computer standing but when i need to sit i use this. I dont have a normal chair in my office anymore and my back has been doing well.

Just a few hours a day yes. I had one of these. You can’t sustain this active posture for entire days without pain sooner or later. IMO it’s good for a short physical task lean forward focusing on something, not working on a pc.

About chairs.. only a few are worth it and they’re not cheap... but worth it even with a standing desk.

It takes away the impulse to slouch. It’s more comfortable to keep your spine in its anatomically correct posture. This coming from a curved shoulder sloucher.

I would just get a chair that is durable and with a backrest that is perpendicular with the seat. If your back isn’t touching the backrest, just re-adjust. This looks kinda gimmicky ngl

I have a lot of back issues and tried them in the past. My physical therapist said it’s terrible for you knees. On top of that, there really is no perfect solution - you will find that whether you use a standing desk or a kneeling chair (or a yoga ball) over time you will figure out how to be lazy about your posture.

Silver1887 · 4 years ago

I got a yoga ball chair about a month ago, and you're totally right - I have figured out how to 'cheat' sitting in this, but I would still say my reduced back problems overall have been completely worth it (I have a remote desk job where I often work 10-hour days sitting). One of the key things for the yoga ball chair, about every two weeks I am having to re-inflate the last answer to of the yoga ball, and when it is at peak fullness I more easily sit well.

Happy cake day!

And yes you’re right. The ergonomics specialist guy at my last job said they’re terrible. They’ve been around since at least the 80’s. A standing desk with appropriate chair would be much more beneficial.

This is akin to a task chair: good for an hour or so at a time, at a soldering station or at drawing board. A short, active task. It’s a good add to an electric/manual standing desk and a good chair but not a replacement IMO.

To be honest, the best advice I ever got was to not sit for too long without breaks and to not hunch over your tablet/paper. Also remember to exercise and eat healthy in the long term. It doesn't seem important for starters but after you get some time in you really start to feel your body degrading (if you don't take good care of yourself). This is really important for anybody but especially for someone spending most of their day sitting. Good luck and take care of yourself!

Yes, there is. Posture is super important and goes a long way in making sure you're healthy enough to keep drawing.

Try standing sometimes too, you might be surprised about how much of your body is used to make a simple line. It gives you more range of motion when sketching or doing gesture work and it just feels more loose overall. It is easier to work on a larger surface when you do this and requires an easel (improvise if you don't have one).

Definitely not a must but I think everyone should try it

I spend hours sitting at my desk gaming, and my spine is paying the price. My current chair is no good, and I need something much more comfortable and supportive for long gaming sessions.

Please recommend the best gaming chair for long hours that actually helps with posture and back pain.

You're best off looking at a decent office chair. Most 'gaming' branded stuff is cheaply made, with a high mark up and often won't do your back any favours.

You also didn't state a budget, while I've never tried one, herman miller chairs are meant to be one of the best, but most of them start >£1000 so far more than a lot of people would be willing to pay.

Your best bet is to find somewhere that sells office chairs and go try a bunch out, since the best one for you is going to depend on your body type, height and weight.

I have both the Herman Miller Embody and the Aeron. They're great chairs but not worth their price. Funnily enough the best value to comfort chair I've had is the Ikea Markus.

If money is no issue the Embody is on another level

51 upvotes on reddit
meine_KACKA · 6 months ago

That just shows how different people are. I do have all 3. Aeron fully loaded, gaming embody and Markus and I dislike the Markus the most of the 3 with embody in place 1. So best case for him would be to trie them out if he has the chance to do it. It also depends on how tall and heavy he is. Build of his body does have impact as well. My wife prefers the aeron the most of them, that's why she uses it. I did have a gaming chair before, noblechair, and while it was comfy, it just didn't last at all. After 2.5 years it was pretty much worn out and I don't use it too much, since I don't work from home and only sit on it in the afternoon and the weekends. Embody is 3 years old now and looks like it did when I got it new.

Team Embody Gaming here and I love that chair. I personally find it more comfortable to sit in compared to the Aeron or the Steelcase Leap V2 (which I use in the office). While those chairs are also great they force you to sit in a specific way, there's not much wiggle room so to speak. Thus I like the Embody more, only the lumbar support could be a bit more adjustable.

What is the best posture while studying

Lately, I find myself studying using a table and a chair but slowly drifting towards my bed where I lay down and study followed by a short nap which trancends to Idk how many of hours of sleep , lol.

How to continue studying on a table and chair set up for long hours? Is studying laying on the bed or sitting on the floor while studying a good technique of studying ?

I’ve been using a standing desk lately and I have had some amazing results with my level of concentration and the headaches I normally get after studying for too long have decreased. If I’m not using a standing desk. Then I study at my kitchen table because i can spread my shit out and there’s good light in my kitchen. The key is to make sure you’re taking breaks. I sometimes set a timer to do a “ergonomic check in”, to make sure I haven’t shifted to some stupid position and to readjust so my neck/back aren’t sore.

I could never study in bed either cause I’d just instantly be unconscious. But you should try not to do that just because it promotes poor sleep hygiene.

In a library with a bunch of good music and coffee.

While you can study anywhere, the best studying is done when you feel inspired. Whatever and however that may be.

If you feel energetic and inspired to study when you lay down and feel sleepy.... then go for it!

Hey, physical therapist assistant here. A standing desk is a great addition if you can afford it. They make mechanical cranking ones as well (see Ikea). A good chair with correct sitting ergonomics can make a world of difference as well. The best and most important advice I can give though is to change it up. No posture is good for a extended period of time. Stand for a bit, sit for a bit, lay for a bit, squat and read for a little. Change it up and stay fresh.

HOW TO SIT IN GOOD POSTURE?

Posted by Vforged_ · in r/Posture · 4 years ago

Good Posture while sitting is really important which most of us ignore. Listed below are all the rules that you need to follow.

  • Always keep your feet on the ground while sitting or use a footrest if your feet couldn’t reach the ground.
  • Never cross your legs and always keep your ankles in front of your knees.
  • Always keep your knees on the same level or slightly below the level of hips.
  • Maintain a small gap between the front of your chair and the back of your knees.
  • Relax your shoulders and try to keep arms parallel to the ground.
  • Adjust the backrest of your chair to support the lower and mid-back or use a back cushion.
  • Avoid sitting in the same position for more than 30 minutes. Take a break and stretch your body after every 30 min.

I have not found a strong correlation between chair price and its ergonomic benefit for me. My most comfortable desk chair that causes me the least physical issues over time was a generic chair that cost me less than $200. I've worked in jobs where I've had pricy chairs like the Aeron and Mirra, and have ended up with a lot of chronic aches and pains despite proper chair adjustment by professionals. I feel like a lot of desk chairs are designed with a very specific (read: middle aged male) body type in mind, and get progressively less supportive as you adjust them away from that ideal.

But I agree it's worth taking the time and, if applicable and feasible, monetary investment, to find a chair that works for you. I'd suggest looking into those famous pricy chairs like the ones I mentioned if they're within reach (especially if you have an 'average' sized body), other desk chairs marketed as ergonomic, and also potentially gaming chairs. Go to a brick and mortar store to try them out, or order from an online retailer with a generous return policy.

Have you checked an office furniture liquidator? It's hit or miss (like all used furniture) but you can often try out a bunch of nice chair models under one roof. And even top of the line chairs are sold at a steep discount. I usually try to negotiate a better deal.

I consistently hear fantastic things about Herman-Miller chairs. They seem to be the go-to response for this question. Unfortunately, they're extremely expensive. The most practical way is to find one used in your area via eBay or craigslist or the like. The Aeron and Embody models receive the most praise.

Would look for one used, if possible, and cheapest one seems to be $350 and regular models seem to be over $500

Edit: I believe we have the Leap Plus at work, aprox $800 CAD and Amia for the conference rooms, aprox $600 CAD. Looks like someone in town sells used ones for about half that, so maybe with some digging you can find a more reasonable $200 chair?

Chairs for a severe slouch?

Are there any chairs that will help reinforce good posture habits (especially ones that don't cost >$1000). My current chair provides no lumbar support at all and has a flat back, this can't be sustainable.

Buy a chair with lumbar support, you can find some of them from $200 that have not Wish quality. Even with a good ergonomic chair you need to remind yourself to keep good posture which is quite hard. Try for free BackWatcher. It will help you reinforce good posture habits by alerting you as soon as you slouch.

> Are there any chairs that will help reinforce good posture habits

  1. No chair - use a standing desk, even if it's a stack of books on a counter.
  2. A chair without a back - it's your job to support your torso, not your chair's. Yoga balls are great to help with core strength.
  3. Any desk chair that fits you

But the chair isn't what's important here. You need to exercise to build your muscles so you're not relying on the chair as an assistive device.

Try ikea järvfjället, it's not too expensive. I personally tried it at IKEA before, it's the most comfy chair I've ever sit in

This is not what you're going to want to hear, but...

Swiss Ball/Yoga ball.

Yeah I've heard this before. I can't sit on those for more than 15 minutes without being exhausted. It just isn't an option for me to sit on them all the time.

I’ve been thinking about getting one, but I’m wondering if I’ll still be able to reach my desk height comfortably. I suppose I could lower it.

There are different sized yoga balls and even adjustable chairs that have yoga balls for seats.

Just tie a strap that goes from the chair base around your knees, so you're physically limited from sliding down

Any recommendations for home office chairs?

Posted by FI_ICKMYLIFE · in r/Posture · 5 years ago

I’m working from home now and I’m building a home office. There are so many chairs out there and I wanted to see if anyone here recommended a chair that’s comfy with good lumbar support and a decent neck rest. I’m trying to stay below $200 on a nice chair. I’d really appreciate any help!

This is something I feel qualified to contribute to. Earlier this year I needed to buy a home office ergonomic chair, and I did *exhaustive research on this to compare models. I ended up getting a chair I was very happy with. These were my main considerations:

  • Needed to be ergonomic and include lumbar support and a headrest. I did look at gaming chars as well, but it turns out that gaming chairs only really "look cool" but actually offer no true ergonomic support or adjustments. So you want to get a chair that's specifically designed for office use and ergonomics.
  • Realistic price. When I started looking into this, I also had around a $200 budget. But that "tier" of chair at that price point actually turns out to be low quality without a lot of good options. I ended up increasing my budget to be under $500, with the intention that it was an investment that would last 10+ years of daily use.

Here is what ended up being the top choices:

  1. Autonomous Ergochair 2 - $350. This is what I ended up getting, and it's great. No regrets at all, and desk posture has been great since using it.
  2. Uplift Pursuit - $330. It seems to be a very similar chair as above, and I read good reviews about it. Very similar all around.
  3. NeueChair + Headrest - $650 with headrest. If you wanted to go high end quality around this price point, this looked like a slightly sturdier chair than the ones above, but the price point put me off. Although I do believe it is made with good quality, it didn't seem to be worth the price compared to the other chairs.
  4. Staples Hyken chair - $170. This is the lower end of this type of chair. It looked just okay, but it felt like I would be replacing it after a few years, so that's why I ended up with the slightly higher quality one rather than this.

You can look up reviews on these chairs to help with you decision, but I hope this helps point things in the right direction. Good luck!

Staples Hyken chair is pretty well recommended as well as going on sale pretty often.

I would honestly prefer leather, are these mesh chairs better?

I'd say there are pros and cons to each of them.

In the summer a mesh chair might be better since leather gets sticky when you're hot. Mesh provides better ventilation.

Mesh is generally easier to maintain/clean and is more lightweight.

You might prefer the comfort of a leather chair, however, since it tends to provide warmth during cold days.

Honestly, I'd try some out at your local staples, since a lot of stores are reopening and see what you like best.

Ask your employer if you can take your chair from the office while you're working from home. If you intend to work from home from now on at least it'll give you time to find one, but who knows, maybe your employer will let you keep it while you're working for them.

This is what I did, sitting in a Herman Miller right now and it beats the shit out of my little amazon chair

Not sure why this was downvoted. This was possible for me and a few people I know at other companies.

I asked my manager about it, she got in touch with premises and they left one for me in the reception of our office building, which I could enter using my swipe card. I drove door to door and picked up the chair without coming into contact with anyone else.

Obviously it might not be possible at every company, but it's definitely worth asking before you invest all that money yourself.

Likewise (except for the Ikea part). I've been through four different office chairs in the last few years and it's driving me batty.

My shipment was stuck for 7 weeks and I finally cancelled it, going to spend like 5x more to get a better chair.

Came here to say this as well. Apart from the arm rests it is perfect for me. My father in law has worked from home in that chair for nearly 10 years, and my physiotherapist has it as well. The headrest has been essential for my posture problems!

best chairs for posture

Key Considerations for Choosing Chairs for Posture:

  1. Lumbar Support: Look for chairs with adjustable lumbar support to maintain the natural curve of your spine. This helps reduce lower back strain.

  2. Seat Height: Ensure the chair is adjustable so that your feet can rest flat on the floor, with your knees at a 90-degree angle. This promotes better circulation and posture.

  3. Backrest Angle: A backrest that can recline slightly (between 100-110 degrees) can help relieve pressure on your spine while still supporting good posture.

  4. Seat Depth: The seat should allow you to sit back against the backrest while leaving 2-4 inches between the back of your knees and the seat edge for comfort.

  5. Material and Padding: Choose breathable materials with adequate padding to provide comfort during long periods of sitting without sacrificing support.

  6. Armrests: Adjustable armrests can help reduce shoulder strain and promote a relaxed posture. They should support your arms without causing you to hunch.

Recommendations:

  • Herman Miller Aeron Chair: Known for its ergonomic design, it offers excellent lumbar support, adjustable features, and a breathable mesh material.

  • Steelcase Leap Chair: Highly adjustable with great lumbar support, it adapts to your movements and provides comfort for long hours of sitting.

  • Secretlab Titan Evo 2022: If you prefer a gaming chair, this model offers ergonomic features, adjustable lumbar support, and a comfortable design suitable for extended use.

Choosing a chair that fits your body and supports good posture can significantly impact your comfort and productivity, especially if you spend long hours sitting.
