TL;DR
Popular Cooperative Games
Several discussions highlighted popular cooperative games that work well for two players. Pandemic is frequently mentioned as a fun co-op game, with various expansions and versions available to keep the gameplay fresh [5:1]. Spirit Island is another favorite, known for its complexity and replayability. It can be played solo or with up to six players, providing flexibility in player count
[5:3].
Fantasy and Adventure Games
For those interested in fantasy-themed games, Escape The Dark Castle is recommended for its simplicity and immersive storytelling elements. It's particularly enjoyable if you can access the Death Book expansion, which adds depth to the narrative [2:1]. Sub Terra is also suggested as a potentially adaptable game for two players, offering an adventurous experience
[5:4].
Collaborative Gameplay
Games like Horrified, Aeon's End, and Zombicide provide collaborative experiences where players work together against the game itself [5:1],
[5:5]. These games often involve strategic planning and teamwork, making them ideal for couples looking to engage in cooperative play.
Additional Recommendations
Other notable mentions include Cthulhu: Death May Die, Massive Darkness 2, and Paint the Roses, each offering unique mechanics and themes suited for two-player collaboration [5:5]. For those seeking a mix of strategy and puzzle-solving, Flamecraft, Onitama, and Sagrada were suggested for their engaging gameplay
[2:3].
These recommendations cater to different tastes and preferences, ensuring there's something for everyone in the realm of cooperative board games for two players. Whether you're into fantasy adventures or strategic challenges, these games offer enjoyable experiences that foster teamwork and collaboration.
Hey everyone,
My partner and I love playing against each other in preferably (although not exclusively) deep(ish) strategy games where you can really think about what you can or should do while having meaningful options.
It is so difficult to find games which work well with 2 players, as most seem to be balanced for or created with 3-4 players in mind. Recent example is Huang, which says it's playable with 2 but the consensus seems to be against it. Same with Scythe that I've also been looking at. I'm looking for meaningful player interaction, replayability or multiple win conditions if possible. I also wouldn't mind a a playtime up to 2 hours max as we have a few other longer ones it would compete with otherwise. Co-op strategy games are also welcome.
Do you have any suggestions? I know our taste is probably very specific but I'm lost and after a while it's disappointing to see a bunch of interesting games only to realize that it would suck or would be seriously subpar with 2 players.
Boardgames we like:
Voidfall, SW Rebellion, The King Is Dead (2nd ed.), 7W, Brass, Undaunted 2200, Dune Imperium (and Uprising), Twilight Struggle, Imperial Struggle (GMT games in general but I'm familiar with those).
What we don't or didn't like: Troyes, Carnegie, WW2 as a topic.
Thank you!
City of Kings and Nemesis are good for strategy unless your wife stomps around the entire ship waking up all the aliens!
Oh and Inis, although the rules are a little complicated
Tactics 2 Baby!
So many games to check out!!
Terraforming mars, Brass Birmingham, Le havre, Daybreak
Don't sleep on 'Dominion' very very good two player game ! Me and my best mate have played hundreds of games and are never bored with it. One issue is that you will end up wanting to buy all the expansions which cost a lot of money. The full game, All expansions... Is upwards of 600 euro
What are some REALLY FUN and engaging 2 player board games for an impatient person who doesn't like monopoly and isn't big into board games? I want to play more board games with my bf but even I don't know many of them. Something great for us to both get into and also isn't complicated to learn because again-impatient person and will lose interest in difficult ones but also does not want little kid games. LOL! Thanks so much.
Popular with my partner and I are [[Galaxy Trucker]], [[Pandemic]], [[Sub Terra]], [[Wyrmspan]], and [[Spirit Island]].
Most of those are co-op, with only Wyrmspan and Galaxy Trucker being competitive Player vs Rules. Neither of us are into true pvp. Well, excluding [[Bananagrams]] but I don't really know of that counts😂
Of these I only think of Spirit Island as properly complex? And even then it's easily learnable with a Youtube tutorial. Possibly a little too involved however.
Wyrmspan is also a fair bit to wrap your head around, but once you have the core gameplay loop is fast and simple. Only your first game will be a headache, after that it's a chill and satisfying game of resource management and action efficiency.
Pandemic and Sub Terra are both properly straight forwards, and I love em.
Galaxy Trucker is... Chaos.
All these games also work well when played with others.
Galaxy Trucker -> Galaxy Trucker (2007)
Spirit Island -> Spirit Island (2017)
Bananagrams -> Bananagrams (2006)

Flamecraft if you like cute, worker placement games
Onitama if you like strategy
Sagrada if you like puzzle, dice drafting

If either of you are into fantasy, Escape The Dark Castle is fast, simple, and I think very enjoyable since you take turns as which player opens the door into the next room whilst the other player reads aloud the choose-your-own-adventure-esque card text. It's made immensely more enjoyable if you can buy or find the Death Book for download (when you fail, and you will fail often, the Death Book has a custom paragraph for each card/item that killed you and caused a game over). Cheap point of entry and if you get the expansions it adds new mechanics and items to your game, and increases the card count to making new random dungeons. :3
My partner and I are looking for some new cooperative board games to play together. We've enjoyed [mention a game you liked, e.g., Pandemic, Forbidden Island] and are looking for more games where we work together against the game itself. Ideally something with good replayability that works well specifically with just two players. Any difficulty level is fine. What are your favorite co-op games for couples or pairs? Thanks for the suggestions!
Star wars rebellion os a good two player
You might want to look into Smells Like Teen Spirit Island. You and your wife can play as either Courtney Love or Kurt Cobain and you have to navigate 90s fame while defending yourselves against evil record execs, paparazzi, and drugs/alcohol. If you can destroy hair metal before it destroys itself, you win.
I played that once, but I played as the hair metal side and destroyed the island with tons of hairspray
What is this “working together”? You do not loudly proclaim the optimal strategy while your partner basks in the light of your magnificence?
Only 1 option. The Campaign for North Africa: The Dessert war
Your partner and boy-/girlfriend will have hours of fun
>The Campaign for North Africa: The Dessert war
Is that the game where you go to war over some ice cream or the last piece of cake?
It's more like whipped cream over some delicious buns or some full ripe melons.
(I should have known this subreddit will burn me over accidentally adding an extra s. ESL so yeah. go watch your wife play Patchwork with her boyfriends step daughter or something...)
Will her boyfriend be in the corner watching?
Hi, My husband and I need to move out our country and we don't have our game collection or people to play, so we need advice. We used to play a lot, and he doesn't like every game (I really love to play and there are maybe some mechanics I don't like but I'll still play it as story creation games) We were thinking about Slay the spire or Beast. He like Paleo, Los ruins of Arnak, Dune Imperium, Clank, but we want something new.
So, my husband and I usually play just us so i would recommend Lost ruins of Arnak as strategic one that won’t last more than 90min. Also, for a quicker game, that will last around 30 min i recommend Quacks of Quilldenburg. It’s really fun and fast game. We also play Ark Nova, but the game is around 150min when you get the hang of it but it is also fun game.

I hate how they shut these threads down.
Patchwork.
Hive: two-player, head to head abstract strategy. Very thinky.
Nova Luna: a less intense puzzle, but always fun.
Splendor: engine building card game that moves from two to three to four people effortlessly. (Note: not Splendor Duel)
Ingenious: another abstract that goes from two to three to four players effortlessly. Hex dominoes with colors/shapes where your lowest score •is• your score.
Targi: An x-y coordinate game for two with set collection.
If he likes abstracts, all of the Project GIPF games are great. (Personal favorites: YINSH & LYNGK)
Friends of mine over at Meeple Mountain like Air, Land, and Sea.
My partner and I are looking for card or board games that are great for two people (open to more, but must be playable with 2) that are built on collaboration rather than competition. What recommendations do y’all have?
I know he’s a big fan of Horrified, for example :)

Inb4 Spirit Island
I was here to post spirit island. Plays well at 1-6 players, massive replayability (at least once you add the xpac with events),
entry level 'trial version ' in horizons (only goes to 3, only 5 different spirits to play, but those are unique to horizons so anyone who likes it will be glad to have it as well as normal spirit island), much cheaper price point.
Or you can try the demo on steam or tablet, or pay a couple of dollars for a one month subscription on mobile to give it a go and see if it tickles your fancy.
It's a 2-3 hour game at 3/4 players, but turns are simultaneous so there's less downtime, and if someone is 'finished first' they can advise others or plan further ahead to some extent.
Not sure but I think subterra is playable for 2. If not, it shouldn't be a problem to adapt and compensate the lack of players
Cthulhu death may die, aeons end, paint the roses, zombicide any edition that catches your eye, massive darkness 2.
Pandemic is another fun co-op game. I've only played the base game, but i know there are several expansions, spin-offs, and even several Legacy versions too.
Mine is Jaipur! It is designed for only two players, is quick to learn but still complex enough to offer multiple strategies for winning, and is short!
I’ve never met a person who didn’t like this game after playing.
Edit: so many amazing recommendations! Thanks for sharing all, I have a lot of great titles to look into!
Watergate has replaced Twilight Struggle for me. It's a little lighter, but I think I prefer that in a 2 player game. It gives the same feel while also just feeling smoother.
Haven’t played that but I’ll be looking into it now. Thanks for the suggestion! I was looking at 1960 the other day, that looked like a good 2 player game as well.
Can't believe no one's said Hive yet! Such a fun little game. Perfect to take anywhere too, there's a pocket version and they're little tiles so they can get wet, perfect for a bar! A good abstract strategy game.
Seconding Hive. The perfect portable game. Gotta get the rules right though or else the game is too easy for white.
My husband and I play board games roughly every weekend after our kids go to bed. At the moment we are rotating between tiny epic galaxys, lords of waterdeep, dice city or gloomhaven. Gloomhaven depends on when our soon to be 2yr old goes to sleep. Setup takes a little while.
I feel like I’m the only person on the planet who did not enjoy Twilight Struggle. I played it twice with my husband, and honestly we just didn’t have fun playing it. We both tend to like more complex games too, but TS just was more work than fun.
We have not picked up jaws of the lion. We contemplated it, but my husband really wanted Gloom haven. So I purchased it for him for our anniversary. We like our Gloomhaven Campaign . We are deep enough in, that rather than start essentially another campaign. I would preferred just playing a different board game. 😂 Maybe once We complete Gloomhaven in a year. lol
Can’t believe no one has mentioned Lost Cities yet. My wife and I also love Roll for the Galaxy and Welcome to at 2 players.
Lost Cities is fabulous. Great choice. I too enjoy Jaipur but also Patchwork for it's simplicity of being a great game to chat during.
Thx for sharin' ur thoughts on Lost Cities, Jaipur, and Patchwork! I haven't played Patchwork yet, but it sounds like a cool game to play when you wanna chill and socialize. It's always nice to have a game where you can talk and hang with ur gaming bud while still havin' a good time. Gonna have to check it out sometime!
I've seen Lost Cities recommended here several times and I'm confused. We played it maybe 5-6 times, then gave it away because it felt so dull and bland. Are there hidden depths?
Dice City is a lot like Machi Koro but imo much better. There are pros and cons to each. Dice City is more fun/interesting but has downtime between turns especially with first timers.
we plan on playing patchwork for the first time tonight. Although we havent played even close to half of our only/plays-well-with 2 player inventory, my wife loves codenames: duet. my pick so far is santorini.
Jaipur, Kahuna, Hanamikoji, Santorini, Spirit of the wild, Duelosaur Island, Lost Cities are few two player only games me and my wife like
Azul, Kingdomino, Castles of Burgundy, Century New World, Five Tribes, Time Stories, Quadropolis, Harbor, Paladins of West Kingdom, Grand Austria Hotel, Rajas of Ganges, Seasons, Underwater Cities are few multiplayer games that plays best at 2 imho.
Great list, but I have to disagree on Quadropolis and Rajas of the Gange. The first is too fiddly at two and feels a bit wonky and Rajas of the Gange loses a bit of its competitive feel with less players, even though I enjoy it at 2 as well, but I think it shines at 4.
I definitely won’t disagree with your point. I find it interesting mainly because of that reasoning. When I play with my significant other, I don’t want too much of take that. At the same time I want the game to be rewarding. Both Rajas & Quadropolis IMO, feels bit long for what it offers at the end game. So I felt shorter and somewhat less restrictive Game is good to play with SO. I have played Rajas with gamer friends and it was blast at 4, but it’s diff group.
How well does the turn order mechanic in Five Tribes work at 2 players? I see there being a possibility that someone could have 4 turns in a row, unless it works differently to how I imagine.
For me, probably the best player count. You get the complexity of two spirits but half the cognitive load of solo (obviously). It's about maximising opportunities and combining powers. Definitely give this one a go. I can't recommend it enough.
Ah, totally forgot about Patchwork! That was one of the first two player games I’ve ever played.
How does All Creatures Big and Small play?
Really well. It's Agricola but streamlined. I really wanted to like Agricola but it was too Euro-y for my taste. This is the perfect level for me: easy setup, 20-30 minutes play with a refined set of choices, easy to put away.
Kingdomino was a real surprise great 2p game.
3/4p I found it very boring. So much so I was going to give it away until a friend wanted to try it 2p. Super fun. Play with 7x7 grid.
I just stumbled across Kingdomino. It's fantastic. My wife and I are really enjoying it. I would recommend the 7x7 variant.
The big difference is you don’t draft cards, they are placed on the table at the start of each round. They have a different layout for each round, with some cards covering others. You can only pick cards that are uncovered. Some of the cards are face up while others are face down and revealed when cards are removed from on top of them.
There are two ways to instant win, getting military high enough or enough science (I don’t think we’ve ever had a game end this way, but it gives you something to think about). The game feel is very similar, but these changes make it work for two players.
7 Wonders Duel is a great 2 player, it hits our two-person table a lot.
Chess
Chess
Battleship, checkers, jenga, chess, spoons
I like rusty spoons 🥄
I like to touch them
Caper Europe
Backgammon is a personal favorite.
My husband and I have been building our board game collection over the past few months. We mostly get 2-player games or any games we can play just the 2 of us. Looking for more recommendations if you guys have any. We've been able to get some looking at old posts here. I'm curious to see if anyone has anything new to recommend.
If you’re up for something more head to head, ironwood is quite interesting. Two different players playing different types of games (capture the flag and control point) in different types of spaces with different decks and different powers. And it is still pretty balanced and tactical.
Along the same vein, netrunner is 2 player only, and a pretty closed environment so you don’t need to chase the latest and greatest cards.

Isle of Cats, Agricola or Feast for Odin, It’s a Wonderful World
Everdell
Race for the Galaxy
Watergate
Blitzkrieg
Radlands
Res Arcana
Many of the other recs here are people naming games they also like at two without regard for whether they are best at two. I know people are going to recommend what they know, but you’d be much better served by going to a high-profile reviewer’s YouTube channel and finding a top ten list of 2p games. Fun to watch, will give you a brief pitch on why they love the game (so that you might account for taste), and they’ll have curated their top ten list from thousands of games played. From there I’d suggest you watch reviews of each game on your shortlist and then make an informed decision.
Use boardgamegeek (not reddit). If possible, check YouTube for gameplay videos. When well done, they can give a sense of what it is like to play the game, which can be an invaluable tool. My favorites are the BGG-affiliated Game Night! videos.
