What Redditors are Saying

Best Diaper Brands for Newborns

TL;DR

  • Huggies: Known for their fit and leak protection, especially with features like a back pocket to catch blowouts [1:7].
  • Kirkland (Costco): Offers good quality at a lower price point, similar to Huggies [1:6].
  • Rascals: Praised for softness and almost leak-proof performance [2:1], [2:6].
  • Millie Moon: Noted for being soft and cruelty-free [3:5], [3:7].
  • Coterie: Highly absorbent, though experiences vary [5:7].

Huggies

Huggies are frequently recommended due to their reliable fit and features that help prevent leaks. Many parents appreciate the gusset in the back designed to catch blowouts [4:4]. They are often compared favorably against Pampers, with some parents noting fewer rashes and better fit for chunkier babies [2:3], [5:5].

Kirkland (Costco)

Kirkland diapers are another popular choice, particularly because they offer similar quality to Huggies but at a more affordable price. Many users note that Kirkland diapers are essentially Huggies without the branding, making them a cost-effective option [1:6], [4:7].

Rascals

Rascals are praised for their softness and fit, especially for long and lean babies. They are noted for being nearly leak-proof, with only rare incidents of leakage reported [2:2], [2:6]. This makes them a favorite among parents who prioritize comfort and fit.

Millie Moon

Millie Moon diapers are highlighted for their softness and are considered a premium option. They are also noted for being cruelty-free, which appeals to environmentally conscious parents [3:5], [3:7]. However, they can be more expensive than other brands.

Coterie

Coterie diapers receive mixed reviews. While some parents find them highly absorbent and effective for overnight use [5:7], others have experienced issues with leaks and blowouts, particularly if the fit isn't perfect for their baby [5:6], [5:12].

General Advice

It's important to remember that diaper fit can vary greatly depending on your baby's shape and size. Many parents recommend trying out small packs of different brands to see what works best for your newborn [4:3], [5:4]. Additionally, factors such as skin sensitivity and budget will play a role in determining the best diaper brand for your family.

There are so many diaper brands in the market to choose from. We're first time parents and we'd like to know which brand to use - practicality and quality wise

Kirkland (Costco) are the best in my opinion but I don’t think they start until size 1. We just bought pampers and huggies in newborn size until we could start buying Costco. Typically babies aren’t in newborn diapers for very long before they’re ready for size 1.

When Costco size 1 started fitting have been 100% costco ever since (we don't even have a membership). Up to that point we used like 10+ brands and the only ones we didn't hate were Target UpnUP and Huggies. I had an embarrassing public blow out situation with the Target diapers which I still haven't recovered from. Huggies really were the best so this is what we will do next time.

Agreed. Also I read that the same company that makes Huggies also makes the Kirkland diapers so they’re basically the same. If you buy Huggies you’re just buying the brand. Disclaimer I read that on the internet so it could be a load of shit too but I’ve used Huggies and Kirkland and haven’t noticed a difference.

This is correct! Kirkland diapers are huggies without some of the pictures on the diapers. It's also why costco doesn't sell pampers diapers (tho they do sell pampers wipes) due to the agreement they have with huggies

Grab a bunch of the small packs! You just never know what’s going to fit your baby. Pampers didn’t work for us and we mix Huggies and Kirkland. I personally hated Honest.

Edit: editing to say Huggies at Costco and Costco diapers are the same, but they aren’t the same as normal Huggies. Normal Huggies are softer, but I find Kirkland Huggies and Kirkland to not expand as much as normal Huggies

I swear I just posted the same thing. We hated honest and 7th generation. Liked hello Bello and are firmly a Kirkland family now with pampers overnight.

Green mountain 100% cotton fitted and prefold diapers. They're better for babies' skin than disposables, cuter, and they won't sit in a landfill for over 500 years. My boy is almost a year and we've still never had a diaper rash or blowout.

We use the target brand. Baby (6 week old boy) has major blow outs with Huggies, and the target are comparable to pampers

Man, I wanted so badly for Target brand to work, but it absolutely let everything fly out for us! Huggies catches all her shit, pun intended. My kid has always been a round butterbean, therefore going up in sizes faster than her legs could fill out the leg holes.

Favorite brand of diapers?

What's your favorite brand? So far I've just tried what we got from the hospital and gifts. The hospital has Huggies and we were gifted Pampers. I do not like the Pampers. Sure they seem nicer with the higher back on the bottom but my lil guy just fidgets out of them and it's harder to see if he pooped in them from the way they grip around his leg. I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth tho...I'm just gonna use them until I run out. We also were given Kirkland's but those are a size he's not yet big enough for. What is your favorite diaper that you swear by?

Rascals! They're so soft and almost leak proof (we've had 2 and they were monster poops nothing could have stopped lol) My girl is long but skinny so at 12 weeks she's still on size 1s but no other brand comes up high enough at the back but size 2s are huge on her everywhere.

I second the Rascals! I’ve tried Huggies, Pampers Swaddlers, Parents Choice, Honest, and Luvs for our 6 week old. Pampers and Rascals are hands down the best but Rascals are softer and fit better while also being more adjustable since he’s in between newborn and size 1 right now (he was born 6lbs 4oz). I’ve had no blowouts with the rascals and they’re crazy absorbent.

Rascals is my favorite too!! They fit my long skinny baby very well (has to bring the straps pretty close together is all), they were so soft, and absorbed everything so well!!! They also felt dry to the touch whenever my baby peed

Professional-Win5670 · 1 month ago

Another here for Rascals. We had family buy diapers and wipes for the gender reveal so we got to try all kinds of different brands for free when our son was born. Pampers just feel cheap and sagged when he had the smallest tinkle, Walmart brand is just 🤮 but have been a saving grace when we’re short on cash. Huggies are second IMO but nothing compares to how well rascals fit my boy.

Huggies!

My girl got pampers in the hospital and got a wicked rash from them. I also feel like they never fit that great. Huggies seem to be perfect.

Huggies fit my baby the best. Unfortunately, the little purple tab started rubbing her legs raw when she started crawling. So we had to switch. I went through a lot of different brands and eventually landed on Dyper! They fit so well, they’re soft, I like that they have no design as the designs always show through white clothing

My son also got terrible diaper rash in Pampers until I switched him to Huggies. My little guy is a chunk and I found the legs on pampers to be too tight for him even in the right size.

Unlike most people, I actually really like the new Kirkland’s diapers. They fit my baby really well (long and lean).

I also like Millie moon. They’re super soft, but the sticky part that attaches to the front of the waist sometimes folds in and sticks to itself when I try to secure it, which is only a minor annoyance, but still annoying.

Coterie are my absolute favorite. They’re sooo soft and I feel like they provide really full coverage. But unfortunately I can’t afford to exclusively use those.

I don’t think there is any one brand that’s best because it depends so much on what fits you baby’s body shape the best and how their skin reacts. Try a few of the most mentioned ones on here. Buy small packs at a time so you’re not stuck with a ton of one kind that you end up not liking, and also to avoid them outgrowing them before you get a chance to use them all!

This is solid advice and pretty much what I was planning on doing. As of right now I've just done the Huggies and Pampers and my fave between the two is the Huggies. Not a large enough sample set to be sure. The main store I grocery shop at primarily sells Huggies, pampers and honest. I don't often go to Target and I never shop at Walmart. Costco and Sam's club are too far a drive to go out of the way for diapers. I'm willing to shop at target and Walmart for diapers if the brand is really good and I like it. I might stop in there and get a few small packs of each of the ones mentioned here and see what works best.

Wipes and diapers

I am going to be a FTM 29, come June! I need to know the best diapers and wipes brands out there. I know this isn’t the 90s or early 2000s and I’m sure new or better brands have come about other than Huggies and Pampers. I’m sure every baby’s skin is different but has anybody had an overall positive experience with any other brands besides the two mentioned?

Honestly we love Pampers. I’ve heard a lot that baby’s overall shape can sway people between Pampers or Huggies. In my experience there’s a lot of trendier, more expensive options but they’re not necessarily better at all. I didn’t like the Honest diapers at all - they leaked like crazy.

15 upvotes on reddit
Shot-Bottle-9337 · 6 months ago

I’m also due June and not committing to any one brand until I know what works for our baby! From the research I’ve done, there are so many factors to consider + personal preference and a lot of those you just won’t know until baby is here.

One thing I was certain on was that I wanted a cleaner brand of diaper, so that eliminated some of the more mainstream brands. I started there and you’ll start to see the same brands pop up over and over (Millie Moon, Honest, Healthy Baby, Kudos, Dyper, Coterie, etc).

Babylist has a diaper variety box with three brands of diapers and wipes (Kudos, Coterie, Honest) so I added that to our registry along with a couple more single packs of different brands of diapers and wipes I wanted to try. I figure once baby is here and we decide what works, we’ll start buying a specific brand moving forward!

We love Millie moon and Huggies. I like using Millie moon when the baby first hits a new size and Huggies once baby gets closer to the end of the size. But we hate pampers… they have a smell and the lining sticks to the babies bottom. But like everyone else is saying, it all depends on the baby!

Diapers are like jeans they fit each person differently.

If you sign up for the baby gifts at target buybuybaby and Amazon you’ll get samples. I would buy a pack of pampers and Huggies to start and see what fits.

Target has the best return / exchange policy for diapers.

I buy Kirkland diapers from Costco. I’ve tried pampers and some other off name brands. Kirkland are made by the same manufacture as Huggies. They work great, I’ve had far less blow outs and leaks with this brand plus they’re way cheaper. I only had to buy each size once up until we got to size four.

Second Kirkland! Especially with how many diapers a newborn goes through. When you calculate the savings per diaper it doesn’t seem like a lot, but it adds up.

Weirdly, we hated Huggies Snug & Dry. The only way I can explain it is there were extra purple sticky tabs in the front that baffled and inconvenienced us during changes. Kirkland is very similar to Huggies (as others have mentioned) but they don’t have that extra sticky part 👍

It’s important to accept that there is no right answer for this. Each baby will have their own shape/fit needs, their own skin sensitivities.. there’s only so much knowledge to be gained from asking this question to the internets.

If my personal preference was sufficient, I’d buy Hello Bello disposable diapers for some of the time and stick with my cloth diapers the rest of the time.

After the first 2-3 months with our first baby, I started really preferring the fit of Pampers BabyDry diapers even tho I don’t like the smell. Huggies Overnites have served us well during a particularly heavy wetting phase, but other than that I have never been a huge fan of the fit of Huggies diapers.

Looking for advice on getting diapers! I know not to buy a bunch ahead of time bc baby could be sensitive to different brands, fit, might grow out, etc. I’m looking to get some newborn and the next few months after that.

What brands are we recommending?

Like how many newborn packs does one typically go through?

Honestly it comes down to your budget and any preferences. Have you had a growth scan recently? How big is baby measuring?

I had two big boy babies and they were only in newborn diapers and clothes for like 2 weeks. Because they were chunky I found Huggies worked best. Bonus that Huggies are sold at Costco.

11 upvotes on reddit
justthetumortalking · 12 days ago

Agreed Huggies for the chunkos. We have twins that are more medium sized and like Kirkland (yes, even after they changed manufacturers, still great!). We look for good quality and ~15 cents per diaper. Parents Choice, which is Walmart’s store brand, and Kirkland hit the mark. We buy Huggies if they are on sale and save them for when they are between sizes/getting close to sizing up since they run larger.

2 upvotes on reddit
veesavethebees · 13 days ago

Some brands run smaller than others despite being the same weight range/size. So the diapers that fit the best will depend on if you have a chunky baby or lean and narrow baby. I think we went through 2 boxes of newborn diapers before we went up to size 1.

3 upvotes on reddit
FoxyRin420 · 13 days ago

Mom of 3 & none of my kids used the same diapers. I went with what fit best & what their skin handled best.

Baby #1 used luvs. Baby #2 uses honest company. Baby #3 uses Hello Bello & Huggies.

Here's what I do for each baby.

Get a small pack of everything & just try them out between sizes 1-2. (Your checking your babies fit + sensitivity to every brand you introduce them to. If you're getting more blowouts in a brand maybe that brand doesn't fit your baby correctly.)

It doesn't matter any diaper can cause a sensitivity rash, it's baby dependant.

Pick a top 2-3 for sizes 1-2 & at size 3 try out those brands night diapers.

If there is no clear winner then just shop the sales of the brands your baby fits best & just go with the flow. Some babies land up using cheap stuff, others expensive stuff.

I've been using Huggies little snugglers and have liked them. My biggest advice with diapers is if your baby starts to have blow outs move them up a size regardless of what the weight or size the diapers says they are for! My baby ended up in size 2s like two pounds before the lower weight limit and they've worked amazing. She immediately stopped blowing out.

Ive tried Huggies, Costco, Millie Moon, Kudos, Parasol and Coterie.

The best: Parasol - best coverage and baby didn’t get a diaper rash ever. Never had blowouts and are the best for overnight! Millie moon was also very good and Kudos had A LOT of coverage too.

The worst: Coterie - I purchased because of the aesthetic and thought they were the best, apparently. They leaked overnight which was odd because they are marketed for being overnight diapers. Blowouts every single time! I was very disappointed with coterie.

Oh that’s interesting! Coterie is our favorite because baby pees so much overnight and it holds it all in! 😆 It’s our favorite brand and I will say some of the other brands gave her a rash and with Coterie, we’ve never had a problem.

That’s so interesting! We use the Coterie overnight and it holds in pee 12 hrs no problem. I think it runs slightly smaller or more narrow than the other brands you mentioned so that might be why it leaked? We also like Parasol, Millie Moon and Kudos during the daytime.

Tbh it depends on your baby's body type. We started with Pampers but they just didn't fit our short, chunky boy right no matter what we did, so we switched to Huggies and had a lot less leaks and blowouts.

Once he was in size 3 and sleeping through the night, we went with Pampers overnights because they absorbed more. Stayed with Huggies Snug & Dry during the day. Snug and Dry was better for our guy because he has sensitive skin and is very prone to rashes.

Now that he's a toddler (and too big to wrestle for diaper changes), we're back at Pampers for daytime because they have the Cruisers 360° and standing changes saved our sanity.

The NICU my son was in used Huggies, so that’s what we use primarily. We’ve shopped around a bit and also had no issues with pampers and parents choice. The only ones we’ve had issues with were up&up. They cause a little skin irritation, but even then it’s only when we use them for several diaper changes in a row

Cloth pocket diapers here.

My baby has very sensitive skin and we were gonna do cloth at home and disposables out of the house. He was in the cloth diapers for a week right after his stump dried up and fell off. We needed to head out and when I put a disposable on him he got a chemical burn/bad reaction almost immediately from a disposable diaper. We haven’t looked back at disposables and work great for me and my family

What brand of diapers works best for you guys? Pampers, Huggies or Luvs? Does it honestly matter? Are they all about the same quality? I'm starting to stock up on different sizes and a couple different brands but I also want some input from parents out there who have maybe found a preference after trying multiple brands.

Also I wanna hear from parents who may be using reusable/ washable diapers as well because I'm honestly considering those too! Don't be shy ✌🏻❤️

Pampers were good but more expensive. Huggies didn't work for my first, ended up using Luvs.

My parents always had luck with Huggies. They said it was the only brand at the time that helped minimize the impact of a blowout. So that's what my husband and I bought. Hopefully they work, or else we're going to have to do some trial and error testing on diapers lol

Huggies

Honestly, the new Kirkland diapers get a lot of hate, but they’re really not bad. They’re a lot thinner than the old ones and not as soft, but I haven’t noticed any absorbency issues at all. The only issue I have is that they seem to be missing the Velcro or sticky piece on the front of the diaper that helps it stay on better. So with a super active toddler, sometimes his diaper starts to slip. But that’s really the only issue.

We prefer Huggies when our babies are newborns but Pampers once they get a little older, like around 6ish months.

Is there any sort of consensus on which brand of diaper is best? or is it all dependent on which brand the baby prefers?

1st child is on the way in a few months, just trying to figure out if most folks think "Pampers or bust" or if the target/costco/walmart off brand versions are all just as good.

It must vary, because pampers did not work for us. Kirkland were the best for us until we got to pull-ups.

9 years ago we used target brand.

THIS. We have used Target brand with all our kids, they have been great, they have been cheap.

To the OP:

Start stockpiling diapers now. It will give you a better idea of what your budget will be like. We bought a box of diapers on every target trip for the entire pregnancy. Make sure you vary the size, and any leftovers that are still sealed can be donated.

We used pampers swaddlers for the first 8 months probably. We finally tried out the Kirkland ones (from Costco) and they are really good and so much cheaper. Maybe not quite as good as Pampers or Huggies, but really close and have not had any issues. We tried the Target ones and really didn’t like them (felt super cheap and poor quality). All we use now are the Kirkland ones, except we use the pampers night diapers for overnights.

Kirkland, they go on sale every 3 months or so (like $9 off a $45 pack). Stocking up makes sense since they are non-perishable,

and a LPT every time you buy one on sale reward yourself with a 6-pack.

We love Huggies Special Delivery! They are soft and haven’t irritated my babe at all. Second favorite would be Luvs. No blowouts with either brand.

Pampers swaddlers by far. For my guy they’re the best fit and best at holding poopsplosions, but I LOVE that they’re plain-looking so you can see the blue wetness indicator super easily. The patterned/busy diapers make it hard to see.

Also, lots of good sales and a great rewards program.

Have to agree with pampers swaddlers! I tried a lot of different brands (from trial/baby boxes and from my baby shower) and I keep going back to the swaddlers. Most other brands don’t fit my tall skinny baby properly causing a lot of blowouts (especially luv) and, like you said, other brands have too many designs that I can see through onesies (which is annoying) and it’s hard to tell if the line is blue or not without basically undressing my baby. The pampers rewards is also nice :)

ETA: Also, pampers swaddlers covers up the smell of pee perfectly. I’ve found that with other brands, the pee smell is very strong even if there isn’t a lot of pee in the diaper itself so it smells like your baby always has a dirty diaper

Swaddlers!! I’ve tried regular pampers, various huggies, and Luvs. Swaddlers are the only ones that contain my son’s energetic poop pushes.

And agreed on the look too! I accidentally left my daughter’s white bloomers at home when we were getting family photos taken, but it worked out just fine since the swaddlers were almost entirely white. She was wearing a dress, but there were plenty of photos where her diaper was peeking out.

What don’t you like about them? We had Huggies from the hospital and once we used those up we switched to Kirkland and couldn’t tell a difference at all except for the print.

They're Costco branded huggies! They're also on sale right now, limit of 2 boxes per size. I'm expecting our first soon and I bought 2 each of sizes 1-3. If we hate them after the first box I can always return the rest.

Also got a bunch of wipes and diaper genie refills because they're on sale right now too and cheaper than anything on Amazon, even the generic stuff.

Buy so many more wipes and diaper genies than you think you will need. 6 boxes of wipes and 10 4-packs of diaper genie refills would not be out of place.

We really liked huggies, pampers had a really chemically smell after she’d pee, and she’d get horrible diaper rashes with pampers.

Huggies is fantastic! Especially the little smugglers version. Kirkland brand are made by huggies if you want to save some money. Huggies has a little elastic type thing at the back to contain poop too!

Yeah pampers has a weird paper tissuey type feel. Huggies is so soft

best diaper brands for newborns

Key Considerations for Choosing Diapers for Newborns:

  1. Absorbency: Look for diapers that offer excellent absorbency to keep your baby dry and comfortable. Newborns can wet their diapers frequently.

  2. Fit and Comfort: A good fit is crucial to prevent leaks. Choose diapers with adjustable tabs and stretchy sides for a snug yet comfortable fit.

  3. Breathability: Opt for diapers made from breathable materials to reduce the risk of diaper rash and keep your baby's skin healthy.

  4. Size Options: Ensure the brand offers a size specifically for newborns, as these are designed to fit smaller babies properly.

  5. Hypoallergenic Options: If your baby has sensitive skin, consider hypoallergenic diapers that are free from fragrances and harsh chemicals.

Top Recommendations:

  1. Pampers Swaddlers: Known for their softness and excellent absorbency, these diapers have a wetness indicator and are designed for a snug fit.

  2. Huggies Little Snugglers: These diapers provide great leak protection and feature a soft, breathable outer cover. They also have a pocketed waistband to help contain messes.

  3. Bambo Nature: An eco-friendly option, these diapers are made from sustainable materials and are free from harmful chemicals, making them suitable for sensitive skin.

  4. Luvs Ultra Leakguards: A budget-friendly choice that still offers good absorbency and leak protection, Luvs diapers are a solid option for parents looking to save.

  5. Honest Company Diapers: These are made from plant-based materials and are free from chlorine, fragrances, and latex, making them a great choice for environmentally conscious parents.

Recommendation: If you're looking for the best overall performance, Pampers Swaddlers are often recommended due to their balance of comfort, absorbency, and fit. However, if you prefer eco-friendly options, Bambo Nature is an excellent choice.
