TL;DR
File Management and Cloud Sync
For DJs who manage their music across multiple devices, finding software that supports cloud backup and synchronization is crucial. Rekordbox offers robust library management and can export playlists to USB, making it a popular choice among DJs who perform at different venues [1:1],
[3:1]. Some users have also integrated Engine DJ with OneDrive for reliable cloud storage
[1:3].
Software Features and Flexibility
When it comes to features like custom tagging, playlist creation, and stem separation, no single software does everything perfectly. However, Rekordbox and Traktor are often mentioned as having the best overall workflow and sound quality, respectively [1:2],
[2:1]. Traktor is particularly praised for its sound quality, which some DJs prefer over other options
[2:1].
Beginner-Friendly Options
For those new to DJing or remixing, Serato DJ Lite and Mixxx are free options that provide a good starting point for live mixing [4:3]. The DDJ FLX4 controller is recommended for beginners as it unlocks Rekordbox without a subscription, allowing users to get familiar with industry-standard software
[4:2].
Advanced Production Needs
For DJs interested in production as well as live performance, Ableton and FL Studio are excellent choices. Ableton is highly regarded for its collaborative potential and is widely used in the music production community [4:6]. FL Studio offers a one-time purchase option, making it an attractive choice for those looking to avoid subscriptions
[4:3].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While these discussions provide valuable insights into popular DJ software, it's important to consider your specific needs such as the type of events you plan to DJ, your budget, and whether you require advanced features like stem separation or custom tagging. Testing different software through free trials can help you determine which platform best suits your workflow and performance style.
I'm a DJ, software dev, and sick and tired of having to manage my files in across my machines. I am looking for existing software that does these things or i'm going to have to write it myself (which is a shitload of work.)
I need it to:
It would be nice to have:
A lot of this is around file management and what seem like continuous issues with software and exporting to USB (does it take everyone else ages to export? I have to spend all day doing it and not sure where the bottle neck is... it shouldn't take this long). No single software has done the trick for me since I use a Traktor at home, Pioneers when I go out, an old laptop for my DJ station, and a beefy desktop (not connected to my deck) where I keep most of my music. I'm not going into the details of it all, it's not worth describing, just humor that my current setup works.
That said, if you found some really banger music management software, I'd love to hear about it, especially something designed for DJs.
Please and thank you!
Unfortunately, there really isn't a good solution that does everything well. They all suck in different ways. I use Rekordbox for my mobile gigs because it annoys me the least. Overall, I've found the workflow of it to be better than the other applications. As a result, I'm pretty much stuck with the FLX10 and DDJ-800 for my controllers. Although, sometimes, I'm really tempted by the Traktor S4mk3 given the build quality and size.
I use the Rekordbox backup function to back it up to a home NAS which then backs up to Backblaze. I also back up to a usb drive. It's usually pretty fast with a USB SSD drive. To sync it with other laptops, I essentially just restore the backup to my secondary laptop.
Given that you split between Pioneer gear and Traktor at home, it might be worth taking a look at Lexicon. There's a lot of good library management features in it and they finally added a perpetual license option. They've also made library conversion between applications free now.
I do this today with Engine DJ and OneDrive. OneDrive is reliable, integrated with Windows, and is way cheaper than the DJ-specific cloud services on offer. Plus I'm not concerned that Microsoft will go out of business any time soon.
I do everything in your workflow except I'm not sure what you meant by tagging with separate files.
What machines are you using? Are you looking for a software that would allow you to export to rekordbox/traktor format in one software?
The requirements that you list are definitely covered by both rekordbox and traktor, I'm a bit confused at the functionalities that you're seeking.
I'm unaware of anything that allows exporting to different formats for performing on both those softwares. Pioneer also makes it purposely hard to come from another software and just plug in, you have to format "in-house".
As to your USB export times, that does seem very long, I would expect the bottlenecks to be either a slow USB (are you using 3.0?) or a low storage I/O path on your laptop?
Like I said, a traktor at home, usually a pioneer when I go out. I can't use recordbox on traktor and vice versa. I use Virtual DJ but it's often spotty and isn't exporting waveforms. Also virtualdj doesn't use tags. I would love to run recordbox at home, that'd be amazing, but again, Traktor.
The laptop is a usb-c mac from about 8 years ago. There should be no issues, except maybe the usb-c to usb adapter, but none i've tried have made a difference.
Ah I see. I'm afraid you're faced with the same pioneer equipment at venues hegemony issue we all know too well. Sadly the best solution is to switch to pioneer gear and use rekordbox only.
There’s no one app that does all those different functions but there are existing apps for each.
File Synchronizer is a great free app for synching files across machines.
KJ File Manager is a great app for proper track naming and doing batch work on many files at once.
As far as playlists go, whatever app you’re using for playing songs should be the app you use for making playlists.
Yes it would be nice if there was one app for all those functions, but considering these are tasks that take a few minutes each, and are usually done in your spare time, does it really matter? Starting another app only takes a couple seconds.
Traktor on OneDrive
Blender and sand paper.
Blender is a 3D creation suite, a tool primarily used for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, and visual effects. While it has some rudimentary audio capabilities for video editing, it lacks the core features and functionality required for live DJing or music production.
Dude means a literal food processor
From what I understand he has been using traktor for a long time and usually has some out board gear (like some synths,/fx/a modular) for jamming. Pretty much any playback/mixing/dj software + controller could work in place of traktor. I recall him calling Ableton "disabledton" in one interview too. He's probably using that in secret then, haha. I could dig up sources if you like.
did he really call ableton that?😭😭😭
I can't find the exact disabledton comment sadly, because it's hilarious, but here is one of the interviews I was talking thinking of.
he mentions using traktor, and liking to compose with max/msp and that half of Syro was sequenced on using a computer without naming the software so it very could have been Ableton.
Yes lmao 🥲 let me try and find a link. I know he has used mxp/msp and I think mentioned that kind recently (like around 2019 when he played Coachella shows) so maybe he's just clowning bc m4l would make a lot of sense
REALLY... Interesting,, i came here to say traktor because the sound quality is just better from traktor in comparison to the competitors.
I've heard on several occasions many big DJs that have been in it for a while prefer traktor but often have given into the CDJs because they are just everywhere.
Ableton
Any software if you’re good enough with it. Sounds like you need to do some experimenting.
Two turntables and a microphone
That was a good drum break
Hi all, I’ve been DJing at home with a Numark Party Mix II and Serato for a couple months and would love to go to pirate studios soon to have a go on CDJs. I just wanted to check I have everything I need before I go so I don’t waste money/time and had a couple of questions mainly about whether my USB will work (I know nothing about technology so apologies in advance for any dumb questions):
It’s an old USB that I just had in my drawer so I don’t know anything about it lol. (I know I should upgrade to a proper USB and I will if it won’t work/eventually but I’m a broke student so trying to minimise costs if possible lol)
I’ve read it needs to be formatted as FAT32 which it says it already is in file system in properties, so will that be fine? Ive also read on the pirate website the USB needs to be type 3.0 but I’m not sure how to check if it is or even what that means ?
I’ve also read that the music needs to be formatted through Rekordbox or serato, I was a little bit confused what this means. If I just plug in my usb with the music on it, will it still work but just not have the cues etc saved, or will the music actually not load?
In terms of other equipment, I also have headphones and a cable - idk about sizes but it’s a small jack to larger jack and it works with my controller, will it work with the CDJ as well or do I need a different cable? Is there anything else I need/ need to do before I can go ?
Thanks all🙏
I think if you plug your usb into your computer you should be able to click in the properties and see if it’s 3.0 or higher (which would be fine).
FAT32 is correct.
Other thing, if you want to have the full CDJ experience (not needed but it will help you with some of the features) I highly recommend downloading Rekordbox (ver 6 is the one I like personally) and putting all your music through it, and get it to analyze all your files, create beatgrids, then you can set up 1 to 3 hot cues for every song to be able to practice using pre-set hotcues.
Rekordbox will allow you to create playlists, folders, tags, bpm for easier browsing / multiple ways of browsing, and pre-set hot cues (and loops), memory cues for your transition points,
As for the beatgrids, I recommend you also spend some time making sure they are accurate with the actual beats, it’s easy to do with the visual waveform and the metronome. It will take you some time setting that all up so if you don’t have time, create a playlist with 20 songs you want to use during practice and review and set those up first.
Not only that, but you can also pick some CDJ settings within Rekordbox, making it easier once you connect your USB, the CDJs will sync up the settings you chose in Rekordbox.
Once you’re ready to put the files and the beatgrids and settings on your USB, click sync to sync in the software to transfer all your Rekordbox data, then the eject button within the software, it will take a while to transfer everything but once that is done, every time you make changes or add songs to rekordbox it will take less time to sync. Before syncing though, I recommend you review all the settings in Rekordbox sync manager to make sure you picked CDJ, and that the other options are what you want the CDJ to read. If you don’t know what a setting is used for, just google it, you’ll learn a lot.
Obviously Rekordbox is entirely optional, but it unlocks so many features on Pioneer gear that it would be a good opportunity for you to test and practice those features for yourself during your time on the CDJs.
That’s so helpful, thank you!! Is the free version of rekordbox enough to do all that or would I need to invest in one of the paid plans ?
The free version is perfect for file preparation and library management. The only feature I’d like to have from the paid version is the song editing because it would be easy to make special edits of certain extended tracks. The free version allows you to edit track structure but not export them in audio file (they wanna give you a taste of what you’re missing haha).
You should check a YouTube video on how to export via rekordbox onto your usb because it is necessary in order to have the bpm, grid and cues to load. Your usb seems fine. I think the 3.0 is not absolutely necessary, it's just a bit quicker with loading tunes if it's 3.0. Please correct me if I'm wrong but if your USB has a blue connector plug thingy, it's a 3.0.
So ill get straight to the point. For years i have been wanting to make my own tracks or atleast begin to remix some tracks and add on some bass, drops, etc. What is the best software to start out with being new to all of this? Im looking for something that is non subscription based.
If you want to get into DJing get a DDJ FLX4 as your first controller
It has basically all functions you need but wont overwhelm you.
All buttons, faders etc are at the same location as most more professional controllers and CDJs. Muscle memory is key.
It also has hardware unlock for recordbox, meaning you can use Recordbox (the most popular DJing software) for free with no subscription.
IMO for beginners the FLX4 is the best option.
at what point do u recon an upgrade is needed? And also, rekordbox or serato dj?
I cant really answer that because that depends on you individually. How good are you, do you scratch (Controllers for battles or scratching can have a different layout), where to you Play etc.
Honestly if you are bored, you wanna learn more and you feel ready just Upgrade- if you can afford it of course. Controllers are expensive.
Serato or recordbox? Again, depends. The Industry depends on rekordbox. Basically all festivals and Clubs have rekordbox and the same Equipment. If thats your goal learn rekordbox.
Serato is the better Software as many say, but its not as popular yet.
If you want to Play on a professional Level you wont be able to avoid rekordbox
I run a FLX4 and absolutely love it. Did my first show with it on the 4th.
If you want something solid and no subscription, check out FL Studio — you can buy a license outright and own it forever. Super beginner-friendly for making tracks and remixes. Reaper is another great option, crazy affordable and really powerful (though a bit more of a learning curve). For DJing specifically, Serato DJ Lite or Mixxx are free and good to get your feet wet. Just depends if you’re more into production or live mixing.
When you say production whats the difference of producing vs making tracks with daw software? Like serato and recordbox are more about live mixing with midi controllers correct?
Yep! Producing means making your own music in software like FL Studio or Reaper. DJing with Serato or Rekordbox is about mixing songs live using controllers. So producing = creating tracks, DJing = playing and mixing tracks.
You're totally confusing two different things here.
Mate, don't mix up making music (production) with DJing. There's a point where they cross up, like turntablism, but mostly these are different things. There's a music production software (daw) and there's dj software like serato or traktor.
I mean if you want to produce then Ableton (I think Ableton is the best one, and the most people use it so if you want to collab with others this is the way to go) or Logic. You can start with ableton light and once you are ready to get serious, buy it
Remixing tracks and making tracks is basically the same thing. You’ll be using the same software and set of skills. So get a DAW and learn it inside out.
And I have, I am wondering if I should invest in a Controller at this time. Like a Pioneer or Kontrol S3.
I already use Traktor as I own it as well as Virtual DJ.
My main sound source is my Behringer X32 with a rack PC with all the music.
Just wondering if a controller is necessary. I would like to keep the music flowing much more seamlessly.
Something like this looks frustrating and fun to learn.
Kj?
I'm guessing karaoke?
E:Op, yes a simple controller will be better than I assume using a mouse or whatever? The standard flx4 everyone recommends will work out of the box with VDJ.
Yes Karaoke, the FLX4 looks nice. Thank you for your input.
Any tips for a new guy in this stuff, just not new to music.
Most of my music is, rock, hard rock, country, new wave, hip hop and blues
Karaoke,
I recommend controller. Ive hosted karaoke for right at 10 years. Started w/ MacBook Pro, Karafun SW, and couple of mics provided from bar. Bought a used controller a month in, added speakers/lights/etc and djed first wedding 3 months later. Host karaoke at one bar and DJ at another once a week for past 9 years.
I use a Pioneer RX3 and route karaoke through aux output on controller. Use Rekordbox to play music in between people singing. Run mics through mic outputs on rx3 with wireless transmitters. Works very well.
I won't be running any sound/mics through the DJ controller, as all that is handled with my X32
What's up community!
I'm new to dj-ing. Been doing a few here and there on different boards and really like it. Im a instrument musician and singer and now my "clients" the gigs I play are often asking for more than just the 1-2 hour set I play and sing. So they ask me to DJ into the night.... I have loads of experience listening to EDM mixed music, DnB, house, pop or anything really, except I have very little experience mixing my self.
Granted this will be used semi-professionally in gigs such as parties, weddings and such so I need to find a smart piece to purchase. This is where I need help.
Also if anyone is selling a second hand full kit. Controller, stand, speakers etc. I might be willing to listen to something along those lines. But the main goal now is to get a Controller.
What would you recommend based what I'll be doing?
For me, a basic one like the Pioneer DDJ FLX 4 worked pretty well. I now switched to a more elaborate set, but it had essentially all the necessities to start learning to mix. They are not too expensive, especially 2nd hand
Hi team... I want to make a DJ Mix. I don't have decks etc.... I dont want to do it live, just want to slowly work on a fun DnB mix with some doubles and fun transitions that I've thought of. Something as user friendly as possible please :)
sounds like you want to give DJ.Studio a try
Just use a music production software if your not doing it live. Fl studio, ableton etc most offer 30 days free trial
You can do crazy transitions not possible for a dj to do.
The new kid on the block is DJ studio but I'd use V-dj
DropLab is exactly what you re looking for
been using it for a while, it's great!
How much does drop lab costs after the trial? They don't say on the website(which is kind of annoying)😐
$89 - It is listed pretty far down the page.
I'd suggest DJ.Studio and while its gotten progressively easier to use, you'll still need to bring in your own music and still have some basic understanding of DJing/phrasing to fix the transitions on the mix. I've actually gotten pretty good at it to the point it sounds closer to my own live mixing style.
Evening Fruity Loopers,
After a decade(ish) break I'm thinking of getting back into DJing some house parties and small events. Way back when I was using a pirated copy of virtual DJ and I'm trying to move a bit beyond those days and be legit. I know back then Image-Line was promoting Deckadance, but it looks like support for that has dried up (if I'm not mistaken). Curious if anyone here does DJ and if so if they have found any software that either plays nice with FL studio, or just from a work flow perspective felt like a smooth transition.
Thanks in advance
Are you using any specific gear, or more standard club gear like CDJs? If you're going the standard route, check out rekordbox. It's kind of the go-to for a lot of DJs in club settings.
Going to have to buy something again as my last mix console broke and then I was living the grad school life and it just fell by the wayside. A few opportunities came up recently and now that things have slowed down I figured why not enjoy that amateur life again.
I'll look at rekordbox. Thanks!
Edit: can you not outright buy rekordbox? The website keeps offering subscriptions which.....no
Hi everyone,
I would like to get into DJ-ing. I’m looking for a controller that I can do gigs with when I eventually progress but that is not too expensive. Right now I’m weighing up between:
A new Numark Party Mix controller. I really like how I would get free software with this and how I can connect it to my phone but I think it might be a bit too simple to not have to trade in for a new one soon which I am pretty against.
A used Pioneer CDJ 400. Obviously this is a much better mixer but would I assume I’d have to pay for software for it? Also would I need a laptop for it or is there anyway I can connect it to my phone?
Basically which one should I go for? Also does anyone know of any good free DJ apps I can use in the meantime? Thanks very much in advance.
The CDJ 400 is just a CD player. It isn't a controller If you mean a ddj 400 I think that still unlocks rekordbox The software the party mix uses for "free" is terrible. It's serato lite. And it's just free. Not free with the controller, just free.
Serato pro is my favorite program personally, but lite is extremely bare bones It's the only program I'm more opposed to than rekordbox
Damn, sorry it was a cdj. There is also a ddj-200 available though. Would that be a good choice?
Do not get the DDJ-200. It's only barely a controller, and lacks a lot of even the basic things the DDJ-400 or -FLX4 have, which means they can be used far into the future still, if you so wish. The 200 will feel like "training wheels" very soon. Hell, it doesn't even have an RCA-out, but rather routes the sound through your laptop; the 400 or FLX4 can be directly plugged into virtually any club-mixer directly via RCA.
It will get you RB unlocked. There is no "good choice" or "bad choice"
They are both entry level controllers, the DDJ 200 will be a bit better supported among the different programs
Don’t cheap out at first. I would suggest pioneer. It’s better to spend a little bit more and have a good starting controller than spending a bit less and wanting to change controllers a few months down the road.
If you want to play in clubs, getting familiar with the pioneer environment is the way to go
Thanks, that’s what I was thinking. I assume I would need a laptop for this. What mixing software should I go for? Would it be Rekordbox?
Thanks again.
Rekordbox. And you will need a laptop
Check Numark and Hercules controllers
One tip is to buy decent second hand gear.
That way as/when you’re ready you can sell it again for not too much difference.
Hi I really want to get into djing but struggling to find tow things:
I will mostly be djing at home and maybe doing some live streaming (trying to learn to show my dad who’s an old school raver - want to play him a set as a surprise for his birthday and have it as something we can do together) .
I would be okay paying small amounts for software but I’m on a limited (student) budget. Also based in the uk if that makes any difference.
Any advice welcome as I’m also looking at some decks etc. Thanks in advance :)
For music either use streaming (Beatport/tidal/ maybe apple music, not sure) or you will have to purchase the music through Beatport/Bandcamp/junodownloads or other marketplaces.
If you have the budget to purchase a controller I recommend the flx4.
If not just download serato/rekordbox/virtual DJ and play on the free part of the software.
Im sorry that I can’t help you very much. But I bought a Hercules Impulse 500 today and have been having soo much fun! Like way more fun than I thought I would. I don’t have any experience with other controllers, except for messing with them in the store. But this things build quality is pretty impressive for the price. Good luck and hope you get something soon. This is so fun to play with!
That’s great to hear!! Thank you so really excited to learn.
Can I ask where your getting your music from and if you use soft ware on your laptop. What music do you play? 😊
I’m using the DJuced software that comes with Hercules controller. It’s working great and has tutorials inside it that help learn beat matching and what not. Right now I’m just loading up MP3s I have downloaded to practice but will probably get a Tidal subscription in the future with the stems add on. Need to do more research on that. I play all kinds of music! Anything from oldies to the latest and greatest. Rock-country-hiphop-r&b,house,dem. You name it! Not that I’m any good at mixing it, but I’m trying! 🤣
