Procreate
Procreate is consistently recommended as the top drawing app for iPads. It is praised for its intuitive interface, extensive brush library, and one-time purchase model, which many users find appealing compared to subscription-based apps [1:1],
[2:1],
[5:1]. Procreate is also noted for its compatibility with Photoshop brushes, making it a versatile tool for digital artists
[5:1]. Users appreciate the free updates that come with the app, enhancing its value over time
[4:7].
Alternative Apps
While Procreate is highly recommended, there are several other apps worth considering. Adobe Fresco offers a variety of brushes and is suggested for those who enjoy painting [1:4]. Sketchbook is another popular choice, known for being free and user-friendly
[1:3],
[5:2]. Affinity Designer is recommended for those looking for an alternative to Adobe Illustrator, particularly if you're interested in 2D design work
[4:3].
Kid-Friendly Options
For younger users or those new to digital drawing, Kidz Fun Art is a dedicated app designed for children, allowing them to draw and color freely [3:1]. Procreate is also considered kid-friendly, with simple tools like brushes and erasers that make it easy for children to use
[3:5],
[3:6].
Price and Accessibility
Many users favor Procreate not only for its features but also because of its affordable price point of around $10, making it accessible without recurring fees [2:4],
[5:3]. This makes it a cost-effective option for both hobbyists and serious artists, especially when compared to more expensive subscription-based software like Photoshop
[5:5].
I just recently got an ipad 10th gen. Im wanting to find good/decent drawing apps i can go to sketch and ultimately improve on. Ive always been the type to grab black books and go with pencil and ink. I want to branch out digitally. Sorry if this is a repeatedly asked question
Just google "ipad drawing apps" and you will see both lists of apps and reviews of apps.
Most helpful comment of all. Thank you. Idk how i could possibly work reddit but not google.
It is normal that people who ask questions in hfere similar to yours are totally unaware of Google, reviews of apps, lists of apps and how to look in the Apple App Store. - And this is logical enough because when you are aware that Google can be used for this you probably would not come here for answers. - Same goes for using the reddit search bar. That also seems to be too difficult for some OPs, like you.
Another thing. There is such a thing as a low-effort post. Your post is about as low-effort as it gets. So you will also get low-effort answers.
It is not you who should be offended. It is the community who is expected to compensate for your laziness.
And if you look at the measly number of answers you have gotten in here you will realise that Google really would be your friend if you could bother to check it out. So my comment actually is the most helpful of all.
try sketchbook
it’s an app on iPad
Try Adobe Fressco, you might enjoy it:)
I highly recommend Procreate, been using it on my iPads for the last 10 years, a lot of people use it, very easy to pick up and learn, and there's a large variety of brushes you can download. It's a paid app, but 100% worth the purchase at least for me.
This is my first Ipad ever purchased and see people making comics and cool drawings. What app is that with? I did not see any on the Ipad from what I can tell on start up. Thanks
Procreate, affinity designer, clip studio(full desktop app) or sketchbook is free. Paintstirm has amazing brushes and is great for painting. There are many drawing apps. Procreates been around the longest and is well kept up on. It’s a one time buy also
Procreate, linea my most used ones
Procreate, costs $10.
Worth every penny
Agreed, Procreate is pretty much the golden standard on the iPad.
I have absolutely no artistic skills at all, but I still bought Procreate and it's been the app I've used the most on my new Pro. I find myself doodling for hours, producing absolutely nothing of value or interest and yet it doesn't feel like wasted time at all.
I do this on paint all the time, that is my main reason for wanting to purchase something like this
Basically my kid wants to use the apple pencil just for practicing his spelling, writing and drawing etc, we used to have a Samsung tablet and pencil and it had a dedicated app for that.
Is there such thing on ipad for being able to freely draw? Or like sketches able to colour in?
TIA
There is freeform, but if you want a nice high quality app I recommend Procreate. It’s only 10 dollars afaik and it has many options for brushes, erasers, layers, etc.
Dont mind paying, is it like easy to understand for a kid? Not too complicated
My 6 and 8 year olds both have procreate and can use it no problem.
Yes, the basics are very simple, just brushes and erasers, but more in depth info can easily be found on YouTube
my nephew and niece ( 5 and 7 respectively ) learned how to use procreate at a pretty quick pace, i think its pretty kid friendly ! procreate also has stamps that you can add as brushes to help them get creative, seen my nephew use my space stamps a lot haha. the app is one time purchase and pretty good for its price too
Thanks so much
ibis paint x i think its free
I built Kidz Fun Art over the last few of years. My kids were 3 and 5 when I started, and are 6 & 8 now, and they've loved it all along. Many of the ideas in it were theirs, and they use it daily.
You can use it directly on any browser at https://kidzfun.art . Just add it to the home screen on any iPad or Android tablet and it works just like an app.
You can also download it as an iPad app from https://apps.apple.com/us/app/kidz-fun-art/id6443621939 , and as a app for a Microsoft device from https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9npwjmg2ps51
Wow sounds awesome. Will definitely check it out.
Trying to figure out which one’s best, since there’s so many. :/
Artstudio Pro. Its fantastic!
Agreed. It is the definitive drawing app for the ipad.
I’m going to agree with procreate for freehand, but I’d like to add affinity design if you’re looking for an Adobe illustrator alternative. Personally, I’m not good at freehand but I like to design in 2d for things I might eventually 3D print.
Thanks a ton!
Definitely Procreate!
I’ll give it a look! Thanks!
Procreate has become the standard
And free updates!
Great! Thanks!
ProCreate hands down.
Awesome! I’ll give it a look!
I recently got a I-Pencil for my I-Pad and I wanted to try it with some artwork.
The go to I would assume is Photoshop but I can't afford to pay monthly or yearly for that.
Is there a really good app that a lot of you use that is free or a low one time payment?
Procreate already mentioned. There’s also Infinite Painter, Tayasui Sketches and Sketchbook. I switch between them now and then. Sketchbook is free AFAIR.
Procreate. One time purchase of 9.99 I believe. And you can find a bunch of free brushes online.
Although I never had the chance to use it I've heard that many artist enjoy procreate. It should be only a one time payment of around 15$.
Procreate is excellent and affordable. In terms of drawing tools and accessibility it's much better than Photoshop (imo)
I’ve downloaded almost all the art apps that aren’t subscriptions. Procreate is hands down the best and most intuitive to use.
The best part is that it’s also compatible with some Photoshop brushes.
I recently got myself the M2 12.9 inch iPad Pro along with an Apple Pencil for studying. I also want to start drawing. However I do not know how to draw or where to even start from. Any suggestions would be helpful
Procreate is all you need.
Thank youuu
Procreate for sure
Procreate is very beginner-friendly, cheap, and there are thousands of tutorials everywhere, so you can't go wrong with that one.
Ooh! Thank you so much!
i currently don’t have a proper drawing tablet and i really want to get into drawing but i know i wont unless its on my phone, any good apps?
Ima keep a tab on this….. phones kinda too small but im gonna be getting a new one here soonish. I wanna be able to sketch out a random idea when it pops in!
I think you can get procreate, swear an artist i follow uses it on an ipad.
Not on iOS that I know of, but if you have a Nintendo 3DS you can get a game called Art Academy. It teaches you how to draw and paint. It’s a very good app, and you can use the touchscreen on the 3DS to draw with a stylus.

I really wish they would release art academy for iOS. It would be amazing with the Apple Pencil. So far though I have heard nothing about it.
You can get a refurbished 3DS system from Nintendo:
But my favorite is a refurbished N3DS in the Black Mario style I got from GameStop, I love it as its smaller and lighter than the XL models:
do you think the 30 dollar price tag is worth it? how useful would this “game” be?
Very useful if you want to learn to draw and paint. You can check it out in this video:
I’ve wanted those games to come out for iOS so badly... I don’t think they ever will, though :-(
I know, you’d think they’d be a great fit for the Apple Pencil. But I guess the developer just isn’t interested any more. I doubt we’ll see them on the Switch, that’s for sure.
ShadowDraw on iOS.
Go on YouTube and watch proko and Phil's design corner.
!remindme 10 days
Go for Adobe Fresco. Completely Free.
Thanksss

Procreate is fantastic but it does cost money ibis paint is good as well and it's free with some pay to unlock features if I remember correctly but you don't need to to be able to use it
Hmm might consider
Procreate the goat
Sketchbook
It is free and really good.
found this thread now as im a first year engineering student and just recently got an iPad. OMG the wonders you have just opened my eyes too. i really didnt want to spend $20 for procreate, but the things that sketchbook can do is incredible.
Yes! I use it and it’s amazing! (At least for my level, I’m no pro artist lol)
I am also no professional by any means, but i use it for University (i am an architecture student) and sometimes i need to produce some deamanding stuff.
Try them all definitely, but procreate wins hands down as a combo of ease of use, features and power. Photoshop, Illustrator and Fresco can be useful if you’re already an Adobe CC user.
Clip studio and fresco are pretty good but procreate it’s still better to me
clip studio paint, you can make and download a bunch of custom brushes, there are 3D models you can use, the setup is very customizable, and you can animate!!! the only thing is that the more affordable option is $24 a year
People buy iPads, because of ProCreate and you’re asking us about other ones? ☠️
I tried Sketchbook and it’s up there with Procreate
Surprised nobody mentioned Affinity Photo/Designer.
Edit: I use the suite and am a fan.
Affinity designer
HiPaint is a new one I came across recently, also available on Android... https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hipaint/id1664391616
