TL;DR
Bosch and Electrolux/AEG are recommended for high energy efficiency. Whirlpool is known for reliability, but not necessarily energy efficiency [1:1]
[2:3].
Energy Efficiency
When looking for an energy-efficient dryer, consider models with heat pump technology and a high EU energy class rating, such as A+++. Bosch and Electrolux/AEG are often mentioned as brands that offer highly efficient machines [1:1]. It's important to note that traditional dryers generally consume more electricity than other household appliances, and the efficiency gains from Energy Star ratings can be minimal
[3:1].
Reliability
Whirlpool is frequently recommended for its reliability and longevity. Users appreciate its simple design, which often includes a long lint filter and knob-timer, making it easy to maintain and repair [2:3]
[2:4]. Speed Queen is also noted for its durability, although some users feel their dryers tend to overdry clothes
[2:5]
[2:6].
Performance and Features
For performance features like wrinkle-free drying, Bosch's ventless models have been praised for effectively drying clothes without excessive creases [5:1]. While Samsung dryers have mixed reviews, some users report satisfactory results when paired with extended warranties
[5:3]. It's crucial to ensure proper maintenance and cleaning of vents to optimize drying performance
[5:4]
[5:5].
Size and Space Considerations
When space is a constraint, particularly for narrow hallways or apartments, 24-inch wide models like those from Bosch may be suitable [5:1]. However, it's essential to check if your living situation accommodates vented or ventless options, as this can affect both installation and efficiency
[5:10].
Additional Resources
For further research, accessing Consumer Reports through local libraries can provide detailed comparisons and ratings on dryer models based on user reviews and expert evaluations [4:3].
I'm in the market for a dryer, and need some help, i'd like to have the following features, but not sure if I'm prioritizing the right stuff or missing something important. Also, I'm not sure if differences between brands are significant or almost irrelevant: is LG better than Samsung? Is Miele really much better than the others? How does Whirpool fit? Should I buy based on brand or features?
- High energy efficiency (EU Class A) - heatpump
- Clothes must come out wrinkle-free. I shouldn't need to use an iron to get rid of creases.
- Post-cycle anti-crease feature, that remains active until I come back home and open it up. (Ensures me that if I'm opening it up some hours after the cycle has ended I still don't get creases.
- Wi-Fi / Smart Home / App control. If possible Matter protocol integration.
- Quiet operation. I'd like to use it also during the night, are all dryers quiet enough (of course it's not in the same room where I sleep) or should I search for a specific noise treshold?
I don't especially care for:
- Longevity of the product - don't need somehting that lasts 20 year, I'll probably sell it in about 5-7 years.
I would go for Bosch or Electrolux/AEG machine. You pick which features you want. A+++ are the most efficient.
So I’m replacing the garbage fancy high dollar Samsung dryer we’ve had almost 3 yrs. It’s out of warranty and I have to have someone come in from out of town to fix it. I’ve done it once and I’m not doing it again. The thing is junk. I’m looking at a basic whirlpool or Maytag. A 7cf dryer that’s on sale in the $400 range at Lowe’s. Does anyone know which brand is better? I feel like they don’t make appliances like they used to, I just want something that’s reliable and will dry my clothes.
Whirlpool with the long lint filter that pulls out from the top and a knob-timer.
It will run almost forever and when it breaks parts are standard and cheap.
Yes! It’s this one.. whirlpool dryer
That would do it!
It will dry every bit as well as the $1000 dryer.
You want one that last get a Speed Queen, its twice the cash but it will last
If it’ll really last it would be well worth it.
Take a look at them online. They are not fancy but designed to last 25 years. On the Consumer Reports Appliance 10 year reliability report they were number one with Miele being a close second.
I absolutely love speed queen and if you look on my profile history it shows. Their washers are absolutely top class.
But to be honest, I think their dryers are not worth the high dollar amount that their washers are. They run very hot and overdry, sometimes even on the less dry setting in my experience. (I've got the top of the line 9 series, also known as the DR7.)
I second the comment above recommending the cheap whirlpool. It'll do you just as well as an SQ.
When it comes time to replace the washer however, I'd strongly recommend going for the TC5 top load washer. It's basic but will outlast almost anything on the market right now.
My LG dryer that we bought with the house died. Bad control board. I asked the repair guy what he recommended and he said American made + extended warranty, since none of them will last long. Since he doesn’t sell them himself and only fixes them, I’m inclined to think he’s giving me honest advice.
So I’m looking at GE, whirlpool, and Speed Queen dryers. Here are my questions:
Save yourself the money and just buy a working one from an estate sale. There is even a nationwide app called estate sales dot net. I see many each week. I would get a more basic model without the computer board.
He is right, I would recommend Whirlpool and a warranty. Energy Star ratings are BS, its a award granted by the government. The difference between the Energy Star rating and not getting it is 1kwh, the government chooses an arbitrary number to associate with Energy Star and then the manufacturers bust their hump to get 1khw below that limit.
I want to be clear, 99% of dryers can not be efficient whether they are listed as Energy Star or not. They use more electricity than almost everything else in your house. The only way to make a dryer be efficient is to only use the air dry cycles.
The only alternative to that is Heat Pump Dryers, they do tend to use less power but it isn't significant enough to make any sort of difference in your power bill.
Reliability was mentioned and you said Samsung and LG??😂 No.
See if your local library offers access to consumer reports. I'd look there.
That answer would need more context for how often it will be used and your home laundry room space for said dryer.
Desperately Need a Dryer
I currently have an LG 24 in wide electric ventless stackable dry. We had it for about 18 months and it is single handedly the absolute work dryer I ever had. It does not dry at all.
To get to my dryer you need to go through a 26 in wide hallway. So I am looking for a 24 inch wide VENTED electric dryer with decent sq ft capacity. My options seem to be limited and even the reputable brands all seem to have really negative reviews that they don’t dry.
Can some please recommend a good 24 in wide electric vented dryer? I have looked everywhere and can’t seem to find one.
If the dryer isn’t drying, have you cleaned the vent out. It’s either thru the wall or roof.
This is one of those expensive and overpriced ventless dryers.
It came with the house we bought. I would have been livid if I paid that kind of money and it didn’t work.
My current one is ventless so this doesn’t apply
Since it came with the apartment, and you don’t know what the previous users did to it, and you also seem to not know much about ventless dryers, did you try:
Reading the manual
Performing maintenance as described in the manual
Using the machine according to the manual?
I know ppl don't like Samsung but I have a a stackable reg size and I can dry 3 towels, 3 sets of pj's top and bottom and in less than an hour they are dry and hot. I didn't pay alot and got extra warrenty thru Costco and couldn't be happier. My neigh has the exact same set and they feel the same way. I had the tech here thinking I had a issue and it ended up being nothing and he gave us some tips we never knew about the washer and dryer
Wait, if you are in an apartment do you have a vent? A lot of apartments don't.
No I live in a house and yes I have a vent.
Oh, then vented it is! Just remember you'll have to have the vent cleaned from time to time, if there is lint build up there can be a fire. We get ours done 2x a year.
Also take dryer apart lint build up can make them not run.
I have a Bosch 24” ventless which dries quite well.
It is the Bosch 800 and the capacity is also pretty good for a 24” machine.
How are you planning to vent to the exterior because typically you need to be on an exterior wall and have a vent installed
My current washing machine:
Model: TLW16W
Power Rating: 120V/60Hz/15A
Net Capacity: 1.6 Cu. Ft.
----------------------------------
Please note: We don't have a 220 electric wall socket in our home. (we never had a dryer in this house before)
Looking for:
---------------------------------
Thank you so so much!
Do you have gas?
yes.
Is electric dryer more better or gas dryer more better?
maybe it is better to get 240v outlet installed?
what is your suggestion.
Thank you!!
I don’t know many dryer models but gas is usually cheaper to run, unless you also have solar.
We bought an old 2004 vintage set off craigslist for $100 and they’ve worked great. I like the older ones without LCD or menu displays because they’re simple to repair. Good loud clicking knobs for me.
Our old whirlpool dryer has been flawless but we did need to replace a motor coupler on the washer. It was a $6 part and about 40 minutes.
Getting the 240v outlet installed would cost a fair amount, but having both options available is a great feature (especially if you might rent this place out in the future)
I'm all for electrification, so try to focus on the negative risks of gas: leaks are bad news, higher risk of fire if the vent gets clogged or animals move in. But yes, gas is cheaper to run for the foreseeable future (not by much in the grand scheme of things though) and often would be faster. Like others mention electric could be cheaper if you ever get solar
For brands, I've seen speed queen mentioned here a few times. With claims that getting a used speed queen will last longer than new model of any other brand, I've never had one. But I've always bought working+used washer/dryer and then move well before they break. Fb marketplace is good for that these days, but craigslist or just classified ads
With how many people are moving and/or buying new houses and want matching appliances, there is a great second hand market in many areas (the people who just got a 500k loan for the house don't mind spending 2k on a new set, and are often happy to get $100-300 income instead of paying $0-100 for removal)
You might want to consider a heat pump electric dryer if you don't want to go gas. They're many times more efficient than the 240V resistive electric ones. I've never used one so don't know how valid the increased drying time complaint actually is. They don't need to be vented though, which can carry some benefits.
Gas is much cheaper to operate.
That depends entirely on your local electric rates and what current gas prices are
You want the dryer to be 1-2 cu ft bigger than the washer. I would look for 3.5+ for the dryer. This gives the clothes room to tumble.
Any scratch and dent at home improvement stores or best buy. Nice thing about BB is you can search their inventory. I saved a ton with a pair at lowes. Got a Samsung set 5 years ago for 490 (couldn't even get one for that price!). I was broke from just purchasing a house. The only thing wrong was one of the legs was jacked up. I put a ceramic tile with furniture felt pads under it to level it out.
I have a samsung and I don't recommend it.
Many dryers have crazy loud buzzer when it is done, right? I prefer not to have that so that I can wash/dry clothes at night.
Any recommendations?
From my scouring on the internet and talking to appliance repair people, you should stay clear of Samsung and Electrolux as they are difficult to work on and break more frequent. The one brand that was recommended the most was LG. You can turn the sound off on most new W/D sets though.
Most new washers/dryers have an option to turn the sound on or off. We just bought new units for two different houses, one LG, one Electrolux, both have this option
I have a Samsung washer and dryer and both have options to change the volume on the buzzer or turn it off completely. I’m fairly certain most newer machines must have similar options.
Turn off the buzzer.
Miele are the best
Everyone talks about washers on here but I want to know about dryers. I don't care about matching sets as my washer is fine.
My current dryer only has low heat as a sensor option and always leaves things still wet. High heat is the only timed dry option but that will shrink things.
Yes I empty the lint trap regularly.
Not really a BIFL factor, but this will improve your dryer experience. Get a heat pump dryer. They operate at a lower heat so your clothes don’t get damaged and you use less electricity. You also don’t need an external vent so you can place it anywhere.
which heat pump dryer do you have?
how long is the drying cycle time?
I unfortunately do not own a heat pump dryer. I’m stuck with a gas dryer.
Some day though…
This kind of dryer I feel is more BIFL as clothing will last longer and home heating and AC bills are significantly lessened from not venting out so much air (200cfpm).
Literally buy the cheapest dryer possible. All a dryer does is heat and turn. Also—have you cleaned your lint trap and dryer duct in the last 6 months?
You want simple controls and the lint filter on the top right- this design dryer will go for decades.
I did spring for a Speed Queen washer but even the dealer told me that their dryers were not as good a deal as the washers- IMO box box store dryer is fine as long as it is of that timeless design and no fancy 'features.'
Avoid speed, queen dryers at all costs! You will be glad you did!
Speed Queen or whirlpool (lint trap on upper right of dryer, its based off a 1960s design).
Gas or Electric?
What did the search engine tell you?
Speed Queen is BIFL.
Replacing my speed queen dryer , Average family use, approx 11 years old. Have a great repair guy and he said it’s not worth replacing the parts
The search engine took me here to your condescending comment.
Nice, I was hoping some future Boomer would get SuperMAD about it.
Thanks!
Line drying makes your clothes last longer. A lot longer. You'll be surprised.
Okay what if you live in a small apartment and don't have anywhere outside to line dry?
Good point. Ikea has the best clothes drying racks on the market. They used their engineering skills to make the most space effective rack at a good price. A corner of the bedroom or living room.
I'm not sure if I believe that anymore. The sun is pretty brutal on clothing. Also, newer dryers (and washers) are pretty gentle on clothing. We have a gas dryer and and it's been far better than electric we had before.
Depending on where you live, it can be impossible to line dry. Helps to be in a non-damp, warm climate, of course.
If your dryer is all electric, why not test it out for yourself?
I got my husband an electricity usage monitor for christmas one year, and he went crazy running around, testing the usage of everything in the house.
It helped us know which appliances should be unplugged when not in use, and it helped us understand exactly how much power we are using when we do use them. Kill A Watt has a $20 one, but there are lots of them out there.
A Kill-a-Watt won't work with an electric dryer, which is 240VAC. A wattmeter that will measure 240VAC is not going to be a cheap consumer device.
Good point thanks I didn't even think about that. There is one on amazon for less than $20, not sure how it works but it is called the Elecall D02A. Found just doing a quick search.
Just line dry.
We got rid of our dryer and opted for a solar clothes dryer. We are happy and have a nice set of shelves in the dryers place.
I think #1 based on how slow cookers work on food.
Thanks!
Hey guys! Im in the market for a new dryer and was wondering which ones are y’alls favs. I currently use a zizi joon and absolutely hate it lol. Im looking for something powerful that gets hot enough. Im open to any suggestions, thanks!

Best energy efficient dryer
Key Considerations for Energy Efficient Dryers:
Energy Star Certification: Look for dryers that are Energy Star certified, as they meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Heat Pump Technology: Heat pump dryers are highly energy-efficient as they recycle hot air and use lower temperatures to dry clothes, significantly reducing energy consumption.
Moisture Sensors: Choose a dryer with moisture sensors that automatically adjust drying time based on the moisture level in the clothes, preventing over-drying and saving energy.
Capacity: Consider the drum size that fits your household needs. Larger capacity dryers can handle more laundry at once, which can save energy in the long run.
Drying Options: Look for features like steam cycles, which can reduce wrinkles and the need for ironing, and eco-friendly drying modes that use less energy.
Recommendations:
LG DLEX3700V: This model is Energy Star certified and features a large capacity, moisture sensors, and various drying options, making it efficient and versatile.
Samsung DVE45R6100C: Another excellent choice, this dryer uses heat pump technology, is Energy Star certified, and has smart features for added convenience.
Both options provide great energy efficiency while delivering effective drying performance. Investing in an energy-efficient dryer can lead to significant savings on your utility bills over time.
