TL;DR Samsung T7 SSDs are highly recommended for their reliability and speed. For more storage at a lower cost, consider HDD options like WD Elements or Seagate.
SSD Recommendations
The Samsung T7 is frequently mentioned as an excellent choice for MacBooks due to its fast read and write speeds, reliability, and positive user reviews [1:1]
[2:2]
[4:2]. The T7 is available in various capacities, including 1TB and 2TB options, making it suitable for different storage needs
[5:2]. For those who prioritize speed, the T7 Touch model offers additional security features like fingerprint recognition
[5:3].
HDD Options
While SSDs offer superior speed and durability, HDDs provide more storage per dollar. The WD Elements Portable HDD and Seagate One Touch are viable options for those who need larger storage capacities without breaking the bank [3:3]
[1:2]. However, some users have reported issues with WD drives, so it's important to weigh the pros and cons before purchasing
[5:1].
Other Brands and Models
LaCie and SanDisk Extreme SSDs were also suggested as reliable alternatives [2:3]
[3:4]. For those looking for high-performance options, the OWC Thunderblade was mentioned as a top-tier choice for professional use, especially in photography and editing
[3:2].
Considerations for Choosing a Drive
When selecting an external hard drive, consider how you plan to use it. SSDs are ideal for frequent access and portability due to their lack of moving parts, reducing the risk of damage from drops [5:1]. HDDs are better suited for backup storage where speed is less critical. Additionally, ensure compatibility with your MacBook's ports, such as USB-C or Thunderbolt, for optimal performance
[4:1].
Additional Tips
Avoid using built-in password protection software on external drives, as they can be flawed. Instead, rely on MacOS encryption for security [5:1]. Also, consider setting up a backup system with multiple drives or a NAS for data redundancy
[3:6].
I was wondering what everyone recommends as the best and most reliable yet economic external hard drive.
My past few have been WD Passports, but upon looking at the most recent reviews on Amazon, a lot of people are either super happy or the ones they received were dead on arrival or died soon after. Also, when looking up best hard drives and seeing the reviews for that, it was the same response.
So, I’d appreciate recommendations. Looking for perhaps a 3TB or 4TB. Thanks!
r/MacBookAir
Do you have a Costco membership?
Sale ends today, so act fast:
The 2 TB WD Passports I had could be cloned to, but the recent Seagate 4- and 5-TB ones cannot. But they’ll work just fine via Time Machine.
I don’t have a Costco membership unfortunately
hey, did you have a macbook air? Could you tell what processor it had and the specifications. Wanted to consider external harddrive options for my mac
I have a 2021 M1 MacBook Pro. 16GB. Got the 2TB Samsung T7 Shield.
I bought this Samsung T9 external SSD on Amazon and the thing has worked really well for me. Fast read and write speeds, reliable, and enough storage for what I need. Has a lot more positive reviews than the WD drives (I used to own a WD MyPassport and had a TON of issues with it...never going back!)
I wouldn’t be buying a HDD at this point. SSD all the way
Thanks for the suggestions. SSD would be amazing, but not sure if I can afford it. I’m in the middle of getting a new mac so it also depends on how much that’ll set me back.
I should have prefaced my comment with: it depends if speed is important to you or not, and how much space you actually need.
What’s the drive going to be used for usually?
Is there an SSD drive company that’s super reliable and efficient that is also not super crazy expensive. I am open to seeing what’s out there especially to help determine which new MacBook i plan to get. Currently leaning towards the m1 pro 14” because my research lead me to believe it’s the best of all the current models available. Wondering if there’s a speed read difference between the 512gb base model vs. upgrading the base model to a 1TB. If there isn’t then the 512gb would be significantly cheaper and would help me consider if I’d be ok spending the money on a SSD. I want something that’ll last and if I did trade it in have value. My current mac model is a MacBook Pro 13” 2013 and she’s moving slow.
> Is there an SSD drive company that’s super reliable and efficient that is also not super crazy expensive.
Generally I’d say probably Kingston. Pretty well priced but reliable.
Just buy any NVMe drive, then put it into an off the shelf enclosure and you’re set
I use a Samsung T7 with my Macbook and it works awesome. Their drives are built really well and actually have lasted for me, unlike WD & Seagate external HDDs.
Can you tell me which is the best external drives to use on a macbook please
Generally heard good about sandisk extreme or samsung t5/t7.
LaCie or Samsung!
Ok thanks for the suggestion
Of course!
T7
I use WD - they always worked well for me!
Thanks for helping, it seems that this one is a really good offer!
Caption pretty much says it all, I’ve been doing photography for fun for years but never been serious about my post processing. After investing in a new camera I am trying to work on that and quickly ran out of room on my MacBook. Any advice is appreciated!
The best?
OWC Thunderblade
Thank you! What is great about it?
Fast, daisy chain compatibility, RAID support
ok... one problem with a drive is that when it fails... it fails. maybe someone with more knowledge than I regarding computer things can recover photos but I cannot.
i have two back ups.
both are same piece of hardware. from amazon. they were not plug and play ready... i had to format these disks using my Mac software but it was a simple task.
anyway, the first one has my photos
the second one backs up my entire computer including contents of the first drive using Mac's Time Capsule feature. it does this every night. alternatively u can back up to a cloud somewhere.
are both connected to your mac always?
A few recommendations
If you are editing from it than it may be helpful to get an SSD drive for the increased speed, I like the San disc extreme portable SSD for price and value.
If it’s just backup storage than HDD drives are better in my opinion. My personal backup system is to buy 2 1 terabyte drives every year or 2 ( I like the Toshiba caniva, but any name brand will do) I keep one copy at my house and the second copy at a family members house and keep jpegs in a cloud drive as well. When the external drives fill up I get 2 more and continue. I prefer that over one (or 2) huge drives so as to not put Ann my eggs in one basket.
Thank you so so much!
OP, this is awful advice. You end up with a crate full of hard drives which -might- be broken (no idea unless you check) and in the long run it costs you a lot more money since 1TB external HDD's have high cost per gigabyte. A much better long term solution for storing photos is to get a NAS from e.g. Synology and install several high-capacity drives. This then used RAID to redundantly store data across them so in case one dies you don't lose anything.
The best is the one that doesn’t fail. I’ve been a freelance photographer for thirty years and I have only owned GTech drives. I pair drives as insurance in case of a failure or other accident. In that time, I’ve had one drive failure and simply replaced it and copied the data from the matching drive. Their mini drives stack well on the desktop and the paired drive goes into a fire resistant box in the safe.
I recently realized my old external media drive is getting old enough that I’m concerned about it. It’s my iTunes and photos library, I plug it in a few times a year for it to synch with the cloud. What are some good external drive I should be looking at? Preferably 4Tb or so, and portable as I have a MBP.
I swear by Samsung T7 drives. I’ve got a few and they work great.
I agree, the T7’s are great drives.. for workstation setup Thunderbolt dock with NVMe slots is what I’m using and it’s great alternative to a NAS
The T9s are just as good and faster.
Anything from a known brand should be fairly reliable. I’ve been using a 2tb usbc sandisk ssd drive for years. It’s where I store my steam library when I boot into windows for games.
If you are going to be mobile get an ssd. No moving parts means less chance something can break while you are moving about.
Mechanical Hard drives are fairly cheap. Honestly they’ve been cheap for decades already. Get an extra one to do time machine backups locally when at home. Then you don’t have to worry about your media drive dying. It doesn’t have to be fast. Just has to keep local backups for emergencies.
I really like Samsung T9. I was able to find a 4 TB T9 on OfferUp for $80. Score!
You need more than 1 SSD ... + 1 for on-site + 1 for off-site backups,
++ 1 for TM backups
That is 4 SSDs
Smaller SSD are better than 4TB
4 x USB4 SSD will cost you more than $1,000....
USB3.2 Gen 2 are most cost effective.
Standard Samsung T7 drives - I have 2 are good
But
Just Plain T7
All T7 have 20GB (or higher cache) ... once cache is full it will write at 350 MB/s just like T5...
If it is 80% full its speed can degrade ... it is a common NVME problem..
If you're on a newer Mac (capable of USB4), the new Corsair EX400U 4TB drive is very fast.
Hi guys. A few years ago I bought a MyPassport from WD(1TB storage) for my Mac.
My data suddenly got corrupted and unable to read - anyway long story short the company has not been helpful at all.
Could somebody recommend a good external hard drive for my MacBook Air(2015 model)? I’m not too hung up on speed or any of those things. Just something that is reputable enough and has a password protect.
Agree with the other poster, you can't go wrong with the Samsung T7s. There are also WD SanDisk drives, but they've had a few issues recently, so I'm not recommending those right now. But the Samsung T7 would be perfect, 1TB for $80 or 2TB for $120 on Amazon right now.
The Samsung T5 is good if you don’t want to pay for the finger printer hardware.
I just picked up a 2TB Samsung T7 touch for my 2019 iMac a couple weeks ago. It’s now connected as my boot drive and has really sped things up. Very happy with it.
i’ve personally had good luck with WD drives, both bus and wall powered. I also quite like samsung’s SSDs, i’ve had a 500gb T5 for going on five years and had no issues. You can get 2TB T7s for around $150 now
Wow I didn’t know they became that cheap ! I have a 1TB T3 I bought at the same time as my MacBook (around 2017), but I might upgrade for a beefier one :D
Do you want an SSD or a HDD? An SSD is more expensive and much faster by a long shot, but HDDs have more storage per dollar. If it's data you don't intend to access all the time, HDDs are usually the better option in my opinion. However, if you're going to carry it around often, an SSD is superior because it has fewer moving parts to break if you drop it.
I would recommend that whatever option you go with, do NOT use any password protection software that comes on the device. Many of these password protects are seriously flawed and quite a few of them are fairly ineffective. There's a lot written about this topic on the Internet. Instead, I would format the drive as encrypted APFS and do it that way. You can do that with any drive, whether or not it has some built in password protection.
I need it to store a few docs and photos, what would u recommend?
I use that one and have no complaints. It also does Time Machine backup very quickly.
No, a wast of money, get a cheaper one.
They are designed for high performance tasks like editing video ON the external drive, not for backups.
“Best” would be a Thunderbolt 3/4 drive. They’re significantly faster, but also significantly more expensive.
However, most people don’t need Thunderbolt speeds. I think the T7 Shield strikes a good balance between performance and price. I have 4 of these (2 TB each) and they’ve been good.
That one will perform better than the Samsung T7, but Thunderbolt enclosures also offer different levels of performance.
The claim is that it can do 1553 MB/s. Compare to this one which claims 2800 MB/s:
https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-envoy-pro-fx
I actually have 2 Envoy Express enclosures and 4 Samsung T7 Shield drives. The real-world numbers I get are a bit slower, but they’re not that far off.
One last note: you’ll find some “2000 MB/s” USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 drives out there, but AFAIK these will only run at half speed on Macs (same as the T7 Shield).
Don’t get that, if you break the cable the drive is useless. Get a thunderbolt enclosure that lets you plug in any cable, lets you use short cables and long cables plus if the cable breaks, it’s not the end of the world.
Hi, I’m Vetted AI Bot! I researched the 'OWC Envoy Express Thunderbolt 3 Enclosure' you mentioned in your comment along with its brand, OWC, and I thought you might find the following analysis helpful.

So i’m basically asking the same questions you are but i’m learning a lot through this thread here. I have been using a 4 TB MyBook External HDD and the other day it completely locked me out of hard drive regardless if I put the correct password on it or not. I’m looking to buy a new one but i’ve never heard of an NVMe SSD or an NVMe enclosure but these honestly sound like the best options to go for. I’m assuming a samsung NVMe SSD is the best option to go for but does the brand for the enclosure matter?
A thunderbolt NVME enclosure
u/Trash2030s
yes, that would be one of the better ones, and add to that a nvme m2 ssd to put in it, and youve got yourself a much faster and better external ssd.

Anyone tried those budget drives on Amazon that say like “2TB” but cost \$20? I bought one just to test it and it turned out to be a scam — it only stores a few gigs and overwrites itself. Be careful with those too-good-to-be-true deals.
Honestly, I just use my old laptop 2.5 HDD tossed into a Ugreen enclosure and have 1TB of storage for free, which is way faster than any drive I had for a long margin.
if you put a cheap sata SSD into that same enclosure you will get higher than a dope guy on payday.
How much storage do most people actually *need* though? I always feel like I'm overbuying. Got a 4TB last year and have barely used half of it. Wondering if 2TB would’ve been smarter.
I just got the Samsung T9 and I’m honestly blown away. It’s faster than the T7, with better heat control. If you’re doing anything intensive like editing or working with RAW files, it makes a huge difference. Also, it's tiny but feels premium.
Pro tip: if you value your data, don’t rely on *just* an external drive. Always keep at least two copies — one local, one cloud (Backblaze or Google Drive). Drives fail. I learned the hard way after losing all my travel vlogs.
And just other options, just in case the best one is too expensive for me. Best place to purchase in Canada? Should I go and search on Amazon, or stick with Best Buy? Or any other options?
I asked a few Genius Bar and Tech support folks what they used for external drives and the majority said LaCie.
That’s what apple sells... there’re quite a few. Sandisk & Seagate have good options as well
First of all, which MacBook pro? Also best for what? I have 4 external ssds I use on my 16inch. First and simplest is an old 2.5" SanDisk x400 I have connected through a sata usb-c connector. It's a sata 3 drive and I get about 400 MB/s write and read. I have a g drive and SanDisk extreme external USb-C and they both get about 600 MB/s write and read. These are all fast enough for backup and general data storage. I have a SanDisk extreme pro that can write and read at about 900-1000 MB/s and I have windows 10 installed on it, and use that for booting and using windows 10. It's about fast enough to be usable but no where near fast as the internal drive which I about 2700-3000 MB/s. Given the use case I have I should probably get me a thunderbolt 3 drive for external windows 10. Those get about 2000+ MB/s speeds. The lacie apple sells does about 2500. But keep in mind that it's roughly twice as expensive as the extreme pro, which is twice the proce of the extreme. The x400 is an old drive I had lying around, so all I had to do was buy the sata usb-c adapter for about 15$.
The San Disk Extreme PRO portable SSD has been nothing but good to me me! I picked up the 256gb version to run Bootcamp for Windows 10 apps like Revit and V-Ray and the casual occasional gaming. Super durable (IP55) and super consistent.
LaCie SSD, amazing cokes with usb c and a and it very small and quick, highly recommend
Samsung Portable SSD T5.
I bought the WD My Passport Ultra and it's a good little device. The cable is a bit stiff and hard to pull out once it's connected to the laptop, so I just use the USB-C cable that came with my iPad Pro. Not sure on the speeds because it seems quite slow (35MB/s or something on the Black Magic speed test) but I've partitioned it to have 1TB for Time Machine and then the other 1TB for file storage (so I can use it with Windows as well).
Bought a sandisk solid state external hard drive from Costco as a physical back up for my iCloud pictures. Copied my library over today and had some issues with error messages saying I didn’t have permission to access the hard drive. Once I finished no matter how I sorted them I couldn’t get them in date order the way they are on my MacBook.
Even though the packaging specifically said it would work with Mac it feels like there’s a compatibility issue. Is there another brand that’s more reliable?
Hard Drive only, or SSDs are fine?
Ssds are fine
Most of NEW SSDs are formatted as PC NTFS format.
Use Disk Utility to format it as APFS
Would I need to delete everything from the ssd first to reformat it?
No, the disk utility will do that for you.
Why aren’t you using Time Machine?!
I never understood why Apple users think they need a "for Mac" storage solution.
There's the WD MyPassport and a WD MyPassport for Mac. The difference? One has a USB-c cable and is a different color. They're 100% identical beyond those two things.
Just buy a drive and format it APFS. If you need to use it on Windows and Mac format it exFAT. You're good to go.
I am running Protools “Artist” on a Mac Book Pro.
Need a fast External Drive to comfortably record 16 tracks simultaneously.
Would love to hear some of your top choices.
Much appreciated
I use Samsung T7's. They're insanely small and portable, inexpensive, and super quick.
Thanks for the input !
Yeah. They are great. I have 5. But don’t forget… you should really have two, one to back up the other.
Another vote for the T7 from me
I have a bunch of them, they rock
You can also opt to buy an SSD and put it into a portable enclosure; get one with good USB-C speeds and you can pop in whatever size SSD you want. Got a SanDisk Ultra 3D 2TB and enclosure for US$190 and doubling that up to have a backup is super cost effective.
Great advice ! Looking into this option
Sandisk extreme - even the old ones are fast since they are ssd. Slowest is still 550 transfer speed.
Samsung SSD T’s or Glyph!
The model of MacBook Pro will affect your max transfer speed. If it’s 2019 or newer it should accept USB 3.2 Gen 2 for 10Gb(gigabit not gigabyte) transfer speeds.
