What Redditors are Saying

Best Fitness Tracker Watch

TL;DR

  • Garmin Vivoactive 5 and Forerunner 255 are highly recommended for comprehensive fitness tracking.
  • Apple Watch offers robust smart features but may not suit all styles or have the best battery life.
  • Consider Oura Ring for discreet wearability with excellent sleep tracking.

Garmin Watches

Garmin watches, particularly the Vivoactive 5 and Forerunner 255, are frequently recommended for their accuracy in tracking steps, heart rate, and sleep patterns. The Vivoactive 5 is praised for its GPS accuracy, stress level monitoring, women's health tracking, and gym workout features like rep counting and rest timing [3:1][4:1]. It also boasts a long battery life of up to a week with regular use [4:1]. The Forerunner 255 is noted for its reliability and extended battery life of about three weeks [3:3][3:6].

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch is another popular option, offering extensive connectivity and smart features alongside fitness tracking capabilities [1:1]. However, it might not be ideal for those seeking a device solely focused on fitness due to its shorter battery life compared to Garmin models [3:5]. Additionally, some users find it less suitable for work or social settings due to its design [5:1].

Oura Ring

For those looking for a more discreet fitness tracker, the Oura Ring is suggested as an alternative. While it doesn't offer as comprehensive fitness tracking as watches, it excels in sleep monitoring and has a sleek design that avoids the typical watch tan lines [5:2].

Budget-Friendly Options

If budget is a concern, there are affordable alternatives like the Amazfit Helio strap, which provides basic health and sports data without a screen [2:1]. Another user mentioned a knockoff fitness tracker from Amazon that offers similar functionality to higher-end models at a fraction of the cost [1:2].

Versatile Designs

For those who prioritize aesthetics, Garmin's Venu series offers a more traditional watch look with great battery life [5:4]. Withings is also mentioned as a stylish option that fits well in various settings [5:1].

Ultimately, the choice depends on your specific needs—whether you want comprehensive fitness tracking, smart features, or a more discreet wearable.

Wondering with all the options out there, what the best might be for tracking steps/heartrate/sleep patterns. It doesn't need to have connectivity to a phone or anything. Not worried about checking texts on my wrist. Any feedback will be appreciated greatly!!

I went the knockoff route and bought this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DBZ3WSLL?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title for $33. Heart rate, sleep tracker, stress tracker, and a bunch of workout settings and music controls. Has the text alerts too, but you can turn that off if needed.

I used Fitbit years back and it worked ok. I’ve been using an Apple Watch for the last few years. Probably depends on how much your are wanting to spend and what you are looking for. My Fitbit would track steps and workouts only. My Apple Watch does the same but also heart rate and other metrics.

What Is Best Fitness Tracker To Buy?

Posted by its-creator1036 · in r/workout · 1 month ago

Hey Everyone!

I’m looking for a solid fitness tracker with good accuracy, strong battery life, and decent water resistance. Had a few cheap ones before they either broke or gave bad data. I mainly want something reliable for steps, heart rate, and sleep tracking, not a full smartwatch.

Thanks!

FWIW I recently did an analysis on reddit data on fitness trackers in the past year. Basically ranked them by aggregated sentiment. Maybe you'll find the results helpful? https://redditrecs.com/fitness-tracker/ You can get a breakdown of what ppl have said about the most often recommended ones

Can someone help me to make a decision?

Posted by Standard-Lab-4486 · in r/GarminWatches · 5 months ago

I really need some advice about getting a new watch to track my fitness/general health.

I'm in the early stages of weight loss, but I am starting to prioritise moving more than I would previously. I have found (in my previous abandoned weight loss attempts) that tracking my fitness has been a great motivator. That being said, I am not at the stage where I need something all singing and dancing in terms of tracking 1000's of different types of workouts - I just need something that I feel is accurate.

I have used fitbits in the past, but they didn't feel very durable. My last fitbit (from around 2018/19) had terrible screen burn. I also tried a Garmin vivoactive 3 but for me, it crashed multiple times and it felt so laggy that I lost my patience with it. I also tried using an apple watch. I bought a series 3 second hand, which for the most part I felt was accurate and didn't have any lag compared to the Garmin.

I've now fished the series 3 out of the draw and I've been using it for around 2 weeks, but it's so old that apple no longer support it and it doesn't get any updates. It doesn't seem to vibrate anymore (so I keep missing notifications) and the battery life is awful.

I've been toying with buying a new apple watch but it's so expensive, and the rate that apple release new models I'm worried that they'll stop supporting it before I'm ready for something new.

The main things I'm looking for are:

- accuracy with steps, calories burnt, workouts tracked

- a smooth interface (if it's too laggy I fear I'll give up again)

- nothing too pricey as I'm just a beginner

- a battery that lasts longer than a day - it would be nice to have some sleep tracking (even if it's just capturing when I'm asleep and when I'm restless)

I've been looking at the vivoactive 5, but I was hoping someone would be able to either talk me into a confident decision or advise what else might be suitable for me?

I've just upgraded from a Fitbit Inspire 3 to a Garmin Forerunner 255. The Fitbit was great and does all the things you say you want including sleep tracking, automatic workout tracking etc.

I used it for about 18 months and only upgraded as I wanted GPS for accurate distance measurement as I'm upping my workout routine.

The Garmin is a bit harder to use but I haven't had it long and I'm sure I'll get used to it. All the health tracking seems similar between the two.

Haven’t compared to others but dan state garmin has

  • accuracy steps and good motivator to complete daily w badges and daily counters
  • good interface and app
  • it is pricey
  • battery life a big plus. My forerunner goes for about 3 weeks on one charge incline always on when running

Standard-Lab-4486 · OP · 5 months ago

thanks :) from what I've seen the vivoactive 5 is currently just under £230 direct on the Garmin website, and I'd say that's a reasonable cost compared to the apple watch. Series 9 is currently on clearance and is still £300, and the series 10 is closer to £400. Bearing in mind the battery life is still only around 18 hours, that's why I'm tempted to try Garmin again.

The biggest thing putting me off at the moment is my previous experience with the vivoactive 3 being so laggy and crashing all the time

I have the vivoactive 5!! And it’s the best for ALL workouts. I just got it last month and so far the gps tracking for my runs and bike rides is so spot on. It’s tracks stress levels and sleep and even women’s health. When used at the gym it tracks reps/ sets and adds rest time! It is a smart watch on top of everything. Left my Apple Watch for it. And also water proof for swimming. It’s alittle pricey but I ALREADY got my moneys worth with this. Also my battery life lists a week uncharged with all day use.

I would go with garmin or withings if I were to buy a more versatile fitness tracker. Maybe an oura ring if you don’t like the look of the fitness watches?

My wife and I tried fitbit and they lasted us about a year. Now we have the garmin vivoactive 4 and 4s respectively, and they've been solid for, idk exactly, several years. They aren't as "smart watch" as an apple or samsung, but more than capable for most smart watch needs and the battery life is great, 4-5 days on a charge.

Nothing with a non-replaceable battery will be truely bifl, but garmin holds up better than most.

Hi there, did you find a replacement for Fitbit? I am also a long time fitbit user looking for something better. I've gotten very lucky so far and while it's been more like 7 years for me, I'm still on watch #2. Not only that, but i scored several free ones for my husband and kids in the local buy nothing group from people who upgraded and had their old ones lying around. However I am extremely annoyed at how they have taken away functionality that i paid for, and it is totally ridiculous that it can't work properly on a purely offline basis. I really used that heart rate tracker that was better before, as well as the sleep stages thing. I got bad and stopped using it like a year ago but busted it back out because i need it to help me lose weight. But i would love to replace it with something better. Its the most frustrating thing to me that we created all this wonderful technology and have allowed companies to sell it to us ... Without actually selling it to us. Such a rip off.

Blast from the past! Actually, we decided on a watch from Xiaomi. They are in cahoots within Samsung, who I think bought Fitbit—-but the watch has no uploading/storing of data. I bought him one for 19$ a year ago, and he loved it, but he bought another for around $50, because he has a heart issue and it had more sensors, etc…we got ours from AliExpress, but I’m sure there are other outlets. Keep in mind, there’s no huge infrastructure like Apple fitness or peloton, but there are a lot of apps and spreadsheets that will help you track. But his watch has so much more functionality that my Apple Watch 7, but you do get what you pay for, but 1/3 of the price

My samsung galaxy watch from 2019 is still going on strong! Only thing I've replaced are the bands because I like the stainless steel ones better so it looks like an actual watch. I am by no means gentle with it and have definitely slammed it against stuff and swam with it and it still works! Wish I could say the same thing about their phones but I stopped buying their garbage ass phones after they got rid of the active line

Would be cool if there is a built - in GPS but that's a perk and not necessary.

Mi band series is one of the most simple and durable for its price. It counts steps, distances, sleep, heartrate, and has some alarm functions, but no GPS unless you have your phone with you. I was using it from 2012-2022 from its first generation to fifth one, and then changed to apple watch in the end. (My reason for changing was because I wanted to get rid of my phone)

I really don’t want an Apple Watch but am looking for something that tracks Heart rate, HRV, abnormal heart rate jumps/lows (if that’s a thing)? I have a heart condition but really enjoy easier hikes and workouts but get anxious not knowing my ranges and to manage them better. I also don’t wanna spend $500+ for the higher end features.Any recommendations of what model might be the best? I have never worn a watch for my whole life as well so prefer something on the smaller size.

All the current models include HRV status; all gains include stress (24/7 HRV as a percentage), abnormal HR alerts, the ability to see HR zones while tracking activity and most include the ability to set HR zone alerts during activity.

This would suggest looking at vivoactive 5, forerunner 165/255/265, Venu 3, instinct 2.

Desperately need a Smartwatch, a much needed health investment.

Posted by SunTzew · in r/smartwatch · 4 months ago

Hi all, firstly i think it may be important to announce I own the following so I could use either to view metrics or setup further etc.

I own an iPhone and an Android tablet.

I did own the Apple Watch Series 5 for a short while but it was a refurbished model and after a month or 2, I needed to charge that twice a day and I wasn't even using the smartwatch much. I won't lie, I'm completely new to smartwatches and their functions.

I'm trying my hardest to get back into fitness, eliminate unhealthy habits desperately and start hitting daily steps and then have a workout later in the day. I'm more motivated than ever and I feel like a Smartwatch, which will track my progress will push me even further. I also do want to take up running if I can solve some lower back pain. I definitely will be hiking and fast pace trail walking.

I do have pretty small wrists and hands for a man.

Important to me?

The watch to monitor my sleep schedule and for it to recognise REM sleep, along with any other analytics such as any wake ups etc and also best quality sleep periods etc. I've been putting many things together lately to increase sleep hygiene. If you have any ideas to suggest please do so! - I've been waking up feeling like I've been hit by a truck leaving me with no energy.

Not just sleep - but the ability to measure other important health markers too. Heart rate, VO2, BPM, ECG and other medical features.

Weight loss and weight gain, the difference, between lean tissue and fat isn't a huge biggie as there's a standalone device I've been looking at that can do this.

An alarm system - I've heard of ones that vibrate nicely and not too violently on your wrist awake you calmly.

Records all my steps and movements throughout the day, calories burned and just an overall summary.

Would be awesome if a smart watch could log what you eat too.

I really liked the customisation of the strap and the bezel on the Apple, 40mm fitted nice but could have went a bit bigger.

So far on my checkout list:

Apple Watch - Ultra series (expensive but I shouldn't haven't to charge twice a day?)

Garmin - New to my list and these are growing on me by the day. Some people have reported that they haven't needed tk be charged for 20 days and still have 25% battery. There are many reports of poor sleep tracking but I did read of a recent update 16 days ago that helped immensely with this.

Amazfit - Incredible prices for what seems to be very well made smartwatches jam packed with content and precision when it comes to tracking, out in the field sand measuring the bodies vitals.

Please may I have some help? If I were to buy a smartwatch now which I really want to do, I'd really, really need it to be the perfect fit for me.

Thanks in advance everyone.

I follow a great youtube channel, "The Quantified Scientist" he tests and reports on smart sensor devices. It showed me that my best value would be the Apple Watch 10 cellular 46mm. I got a refurbished model from a seller on amazon for $350 and have no regrets. I wear it at night for sleep tracking, during the day for steps/activity tracking, then when I get home I put it on a charger and go shower. I am looking at chargers I can use in the car because it is a long commute, so I could charge it during the commute then wear it again when I park at home to continue all of the tracking. I love this thing, and I got rose gold with a faux leather classic men's band that fits quite well. I signed up for Fitness + but cancelled it before the free trial ended.

This has been the best health investment I've ever made.

My Mother hates iPhone so I got her the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra cellular (latest version), she likes it very much and we configured it for fall detection, so I like it. Also worth the money ($450), but it also requires a daily charge.

My wife still wears her Apple Watch 5 but the battery dies by dinnertime and she doesn't charge it in the day. It sits on a bedside charger all night, so the battery life is very short.

The Apple Watch Ultra was my first choice, but the price is too high for my budget.

Hi. I come here with just a quick, ‘PLEASE tread into data monitoring carefully’ and a story that I hope will maybe help some people. I started tracking my health and sleep with a Fitbit. I made sure I moved when it said move. I got my zone minutes and steps. I got my sleep score up. I used the estimated calorie expenditure to plan healthy, balanced meals. My doctor actually high-fived me for body fat percentage and heart rate being “like an Olympic athlete.” I LOOKED like a healthy person, but my body was not healthy.

Turns out my fancy little watch made my body think I was in a state of famine. I stopped menstruating. I became anemic (making my A1c look high) and developed high triglycerides in response to low-grade starvation. My cortisol is super high. My liver enzymes are elevated and total protein is low. My circulation is always bad and my body is always cold. I have fainted multiple times and get dizzy when I stand.  I have been like this for 5+ years and every doctor is just like, no biggie. I mean I started developing osteoporosis, but again, no help.

Finally, this summer, I found a doctor that told me my watch gave my hypothalamic amenorrhea. My new prescription: to sit on my butt and eat like 3,000 calories a day over the course of 6 small meals. All of my reflexive symptoms, including my period were corrected within a couple of months of starting this treatment. I have to go with it for a little while longer (turns out women shouldn’t have 16% body fat). I have had to gain all the weight back. I have had to realize I spent years of my life in fight or flight trying to micromanage every aspect of my body instead of actually learning how to check in with my body and ask it, “how did that feel?”

Now, I also know I am not everyone. Smart watches have been very helpful for people in my life, and I don’t want to discourage their use. We just always only get one narrative, and I wanted to chime in with the other. I do recommend people work with a doctor to nutritionalist to calibrate goals to their individual needs.

I hope I'm telling you what you already know, but these are consumer wearables not medical devices.

Garmin is excellent for tracking exercise, but having a running watch doesn't make people fit.  If you're going to exercise though it's probably got the best tracking.

Garmin sleep tracking is bad, no smart watch can do sleep stages because those are brain activity a watch can't measure.  AI literally guesses my sleep stages with better accuracy.

I understand this but the watches track time asleep and I don't know how in-depth the sleep analytics go, Apple Watches can tell you how much REM sleep you're getting and they use an algorithm to determine this which takes breathing and other things into account.

Which AI do you use to guess your sleep stages?

I could go as far as maybe $350 if it really is worthwhile

Garmin Venu - perfect for what you are looking for in a smart watch. Lot of room to grow into before you graduate to garmin watches with more fitness capabilities, great basic smartwatch functionality, excellent battery life.

I would say go garmin - and would suggest looking at the vivoactive 6 or the forerunner 165.

Ultra - yes you can maybe get away with a charge once every 2 days at best, but on days you go hiking if doing a 7 hr hike maybe not. Also health and fitness you can match what garmin offers by using 3rd party apps - but means no integrated holistic system (where health & fitness features interact with each other and influence training featurews) - and again costing a lot more.

Garmin - covers all you want. can't log food with watch - but can link the MyFitnessPal phone app to garmin acocunt and then will pull in the calories you consumed to garmin app/web - so can see how much you have saved compared to calories burned. Also quite like how the MFP app quickly easily logs food and the level of detail breakdown you can get on what you have consumed (this requires premium but not too expensive). Garmin especially good at highlighting how changes in lifestyle/habits/illness/injury impact your health metrics - this can help you drive better habits/lifestyle and give early warning on illness/injury allowing you to pull back to try and reduce impact of these. Note most garmins offer +10 to +16 days battery life so with activity tracking a weekly charge is generally all that is required (its the Fenix (and its variants like the Epix) or the instinct series are the only ones that offer that type of battery life and genearlly only in the x variant (i.e. 50-51mm case size model)). Added advantage is all the built in training with garmin coach, daily suggested workouts on models liek the Forerunner and fenix series and the built in badge and challenges that can help maintain motivation. And their body battery is best in the business. For sleep tracking the main focus is recovery which plays right into what you are looking for.

Amazfit - needs to be a current model - bip 6, active 2 (preferably the premium version) or the balance. Always just found their health metrics to be slightly more hit and miss than garmin, and their training metrics and definitely miss. Feel their sleep tracking is very weak especially compared to garmin and most others.

Note - sleep stage tracking is going to be hit and miss - especially in regards to splitting rem and light sleep - even sleep clinics struggle with this and if you put 3 sleep technitions to confirm split you are likely to get 3 answers --- so would ignore this and focus more on how sleep benefits your recovery and this is where garmin has everyone beat (including fitbit but they do get close as long as you are prepared to fork out for premium sub) - this will also tie heavily into how you feel and what shows up on your body battery metric. The sleep breakdown and allowing you to see detail on stress during sleep factors in heavily into how you can improve your sleep, and then being able to overlay hrv baselin across you sleep and see a 4w baseline can make a massive difference. When you see how certain habits/lifestyles impact your sleep and your recovery it can be a massive motivator to change those habits/lifestyle.

best fitness tracker watch

Key Considerations for Choosing a Fitness Tracker Watch:

  1. Activity Tracking Features: Look for a watch that tracks a variety of activities such as steps, heart rate, sleep, and specific workouts (running, cycling, swimming, etc.).

  2. Heart Rate Monitoring: Continuous heart rate monitoring can provide insights into your fitness levels and help optimize workouts.

  3. GPS Functionality: Built-in GPS is essential for tracking outdoor activities without needing to carry your phone.

  4. Battery Life: Consider how long the battery lasts on a single charge. A good fitness tracker should last at least 5-7 days.

  5. Water Resistance: If you swim or sweat a lot, ensure the watch is water-resistant (look for at least 5 ATM rating).

  6. Compatibility: Check if the watch is compatible with your smartphone’s operating system (iOS or Android) and any fitness apps you use.

  7. User Interface: A clear display and user-friendly interface are important for easy navigation and access to features.

Recommendations:

  • Garmin Forerunner 245: Excellent for runners, it offers advanced metrics, GPS, heart rate monitoring, and a battery life of up to 7 days in smartwatch mode.

  • Apple Watch Series 8: Great for iPhone users, it combines fitness tracking with smartwatch features, including ECG and blood oxygen monitoring, and has a sleek design.

  • Fitbit Charge 5: A versatile option with built-in GPS, heart rate monitoring, and a long battery life (up to 7 days). It also offers stress management features.

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5: Ideal for Android users, it provides comprehensive health tracking, GPS, and a stylish design, with a battery life of around 40 hours.

Choose based on your specific needs, such as the types of activities you engage in and whether you prefer smartwatch features alongside fitness tracking.
