What Redditors are Saying

Best Folding Bikes

TL;DR

  • Tern Eclipse D16 for larger wheels and ride comfort [1:1]
  • Brompton for compactness and ease of folding [2:3]
  • Zizzo Forte for budget-friendly options with high weight capacity [4:5]

Wheel Size and Ride Comfort

When considering folding bikes, wheel size plays a significant role in ride comfort. Larger wheels, such as those on the Tern Eclipse D16 (26 inches), offer better stability and ability to handle small cracks and potholes [1]. However, smaller wheels can still provide a surprisingly smooth ride, as noted by users who tested bikes with 16" and 20" wheels [1:3]. A 24" wheel size is often considered the best trade-off between compactness and ride quality [1:4].

Portability and Budget Considerations

For those prioritizing portability, Brompton bikes are highly recommended due to their compact fold and ease of transport [2:3]. However, achieving both portability and off-road capability within a tight budget can be challenging. Zizzo offers reasonably priced folding bikes with 20" wheels that might fit the bill [2:2], but it's important to note that most folding bikes are not designed for off-road use [2:1].

Weight Capacity and Durability

If weight capacity is a concern, the Zizzo Forte stands out as a strong contender. It supports up to 300 lbs and has been praised for its sturdy build quality [4:5]. Other brands like Dahon and Origami also offer models with similar weight limits [4:1]. It's advisable to consider these options if durability and weight capacity are priorities.

User Experience and Recommendations

The Priority Folder has received positive feedback for urban commuting, offering a pleasant riding experience despite concerns about its folded geometry and lack of disc brakes [5:5]. Users have found it convenient for city travel, fitting easily into public transport and taxis [5]. The Zizzo brand is frequently recommended for budget-conscious buyers seeking reliable folding bikes [4:4].

Additional Considerations

For those exploring used options, platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist can offer good deals on folding bikes [4:3]. Additionally, some users have suggested considering other innovative designs, such as Bike Friday, which may offer unique features suitable for specific needs [5:6].

ORIGINAL POST

I'm searching for a folding bike for my brother. He requires a folding bike to throw it fast in the car (no racks planned, only luggage room). However, the size of the folded bike is not a concern - plenty of space in the luggage room. Would that mean that I should just go the biggest size wheel I can get for ride comfort? In Germany/Poland I could only search 26 inches Tern Eclipse D16. Can a 24 inch bike ride better than 26 one? Stability and ability to go over small cracks and potholes is rather required.

I have an Eclipse D16 and like it a lot. Montague also makes 26", 27.5", and 29" folding bikes, but I prefer the Tern fold.

Montague bikes require dismounting the front wheel for the fold, correct? Looks quite cumbersome, would surely get dirty hands.

I had one and it didn't. Forget the model - it was a promotion with a car we bought and I didn't ride much in those days.

I'd recommend test rides wherever possible! Personally, I was surprised at how well bikes with smaller tires rode when I checked them out at local shops.

I tried a few 12 speed C-lines from Bromtpon which have 16" wheels and a Priority Folder which has 20" wheels. I went with the Priority Folder because it had the Gates Carbon Belt drive and an IGH, so I didn't need to worry about smashing any derailleur or maintaining a chain.

My full size 3x7 chain driven bike with 26" wheels is certainly faster, but in my opinion, the folding bikes are still fast enough for most purposes (I can get up to around 15 mph on my 20" Folder pretty comfortably on a flat vs low 20s on the 26") .

Tires will also play a big role in how comfortable and fast your bike is at any size, so keep that in mind too.

24" offers the best tradeoffs.
Compact enough to not to be too unwieldy but it still rides like big wheel bicycle. Especially if you put on some wider tires like 2.0 / 50mm.

Trying to find a good folding bike for portability. I’d love to be able to bring the bike in a bag, that’s the ideal but under stable if that’s not a thing. The highest price I’m willing to go is 500 usd (low i see know but i see don’t wanna break the bank on a bike). If it’s electric, great if not, also great. I see prefer the lightest weight one that is easy to fold and is compact. I’m also 5’ll ft if that’s maters. I’d love to be able to off road with this bike also. I’m a beginner when it comes to biking also.

You're asking for everything on a very meager budget. Maybe you'll get lucky, but more likely, you'll have to compromise.

For compact and easy to fold, it's hard to beat a Brompton.

For off road, the Bike Friday Al-Packa is great.

For 500, See what's available used near you and just ride that.

I think you should add a few more requirements for the price. Maybe tires that are fast, comfortable, never deflate, and can float across waterways? 😅

Dahon has a couple of bikes in that price range, but I don't know how they'd perform off road. Looks like Downtube has one as well.

Most folding bikes are not built for off road, and most high quality ones are well over $500. You might want to look for a used one.

Looking for the best non-electric folding bike under $1000 with 20" wheels, 8-speed drivetrain

Posted by lintstah1337 · in r/foldingbikes · 1 year ago

I am looking for a new or used non-electric folding bike under $1000 with a capacity of 300 lbs.

Ideally, I want it to have a minimum of 20" wheels (the bigger the better), 8-speed drivetrain and disc brakes.

I researched and found the following

Origami Bull Dahon Hit D6 Dahon Launch D8 Zizzo Forte 2023
Capacity 300 lbs 300lbs 300lbs 300 lbs
Weight 29 lbs 27 lbs 27 lbs 28.3 lbs
Drivetrain 9 speed sensah derailleur 6 speed Dahon custom 8 speed Sunrace, 11-32T 8 speed Shimano Altus derailleur
Brakes Disk Brakes Rim Brakes Disk Brakes Rim Brakes
Wheel Size 20x2.125" 20x1.75" 20x1.75" 20x1.95"
Price $500 $700 $1000 $550

The Origami Bull is my first choice, but it is sold everywhere. I emailed Origami to ask about restock availability and they said they would have stock in the fall.

My second choice is Zizzo Forte 2023, but it is not as good as Origami Bull and is more expensive.

Dahon is very expensive.

I am trying to find other folding bikes that meet the criteria I am looking for.

Need advice on what to get

I am currently struggling to figure out what's the best bike for me. I really prefer a folding bike as I can't really trust locking a bike outside when I go places and need to keep it inside an apartment.

I hope some of you could help me with recommendations and even opinions on some bikes I've looked at.

I need to find one that has a 300lbs weight limit at minimum. My original budget was around $300 but honestly I can go up to $500 if it means having a very trustworthy bike? I prefer non electronic bikes but hey if they aren't that bad I could give consideration. If it helps, I live close to the city and in a very hilly area but I try to stick to flat paths.

Some bikes I have found out about are:

Origami Bull Zizzo Forte Columba Viribus Citizen Dahon

Including some on Amazon finds on the cheaper side.

I have the coral color Forte and really like it. I weigh about 240 so I needed the sturdier model for outside riding. I also have a Campo which is only used on an indoor stand for exercise and it seems fine for me used that way. I have a 10 inch tablet mounted on the handlebar and watch youtube trail and road riding videos while exercising and it is fun for me...in a bit of overkill I have a Lectric brand ebike which also can be folded and find it useful too. With two bikes for outdoor riding I can invite a friend who doesn't have a bike for rides. Zizzo bikes are great imo...I recommend the brand highly. Good luck with your biking...

As far as I know, the Zizzo Forte is the only one in your price range with a 300 lb weight limit. I have a Zizzo Campo that I ordered from Amazon, and the build quality was surprisingly good for the price point. I think you'd be pretty happy with the Forte.

I actually found a few on ebay going for around $400 when it sells for $560 something on amazon. I wonder if i should purchase from ebay, one says that its in good condition but that they never really used it and just want to get rid of it.

Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist are also good places to buy folding bikes that someone used once and want to get rid of. Zizzo is a good brand - I just bought a Via and it’s very sturdy and well made. I think the Forte would be a good choice, way better than the no-name Amazon models in your screenshots. As the other commenter mentioned, the other brand-name ones you listed are not rated for that weight in your price range.

The Folder Ended Up Being My Favorite Priority Bike

Posted by spinoza844 · in r/PriorityBicycles · 1 month ago

I've had several models of Priority bicycles and yet somehow I keep coming back to my Folder. Folding bikes weirdly do not feel like a compromised bike experience so I've found it a joy to ride.

For urban commuting, I just don't think it gets better than a folding bicycle. One time I got a flat in a relatively deserted area without a spare but it wasn't a problem at all because even the smallest cab is going to be able to fit a folding bicycle. I also can bring it on virtually any public transport without a fuss.

Something I was worried about was air travel and I read through TONS of guides about this, all of which I found super frustrating and incomplete. In the end I purchased this bicycle bag and it works great. As long as you tell the airlines its a bicycle, they often don't even charge extra.

A large addition I chose to make to the bike was adding a dynamo hub. This cost about 500 dollars extra but its been SO worth it, I use it all the time. It's possible to do this without in any way affecting how the bike folds. Would be cool if Priority made this an add on but I'm actually happier to do it after market because Priority's dynamos are frankly not that good.

Another feature add I would like to see is some sort of attachment that makes it possible to wheel the bike around when folded like a trolley. Folding bikes are easier to transport around than full size bikes but they still are a huge pain in a lot of setups.

Ultimately though, it's just a great bicycle. It's been all over the world with me and it reliably gets me to where I need to go with no fuss. What's not to love?

I have no real need for a folding bicycle, but I have been fascinated by the folder just on general design / specs / price. Upright riding position, Nexus 8, not too heavy, well under $1000. But not having ridden a folding bike before, I do wonder about the actual riding experience, especially performance on hills (both up & down!), and how compromised the rack seems with respect to panniers etc.

2 upvotes on reddit
spinoza844 · OP · 1 month ago

I actually really like the riding experience? It feels like a bicycle to me and the upright style suits for urban commuting.

The rack hasn’t really been a problem for panniers except that occasionally my foot hits them as I’m riding if they are too close to the front of the rack. This is the sort of thing that in a shorter term review this would be classified as a huge downside but the reality is I don’t think about this much despite doing often heavy grocery shopping with it.

1 upvotes on reddit
M
MarcSabatella · 1 month ago

As long as there is room to mount the panniers far enough back, that doesn't sound different from other setups. But maybe there is less wiggle room?

Glad to know the ride feels normal. I would worry it might feel a little unstable at especially high or low speeds - hence my concern about hills. Also I haven't done the math to understand the actual gear ratios.

I would love to get one, but in 230lbs and am always skeptical of folding bikes at my weight, given the seatpost distance from seat to collar and the strain it would be

Great points here. I had those idea that the folder might also be pretty darn cool if it didn’t fold - just a minivelo option.

I also thought it would be rad if Priority could slap a Pinion 9-speed into the frame.

Good call on the bag and the dynamo hub.

Not many people talk about the folder which is a shame. I went back and forth about getting and ultimately found a good deal on a Bike Friday but I’ll always wonder about what could have been.

I'm very surprised to hear this. I've been asking around about the Folder and there's a dearth of information. Even Priority couldn't answer all my questions. It seemed to me like the folded geometry was very awkward due to the way the wheels flare out. It also seems quite heavy to me. I feel like I would miss disc brakes as well. Thanks a lot for the review! I wish I'd seen this sooner, I might have bought it for my summer vacation.

2 upvotes on reddit
spinoza844 · OP · 1 month ago

I do agree the geometry is awkward folded but I don’t think more so than other 20 inch folders.

Not having disc brakes is a bummer but I honestly don’t miss them too much. I’ve used the bike in light rain and it’s been fine.

I really like how the bike rides overall, I find it quite pleasant for getting around.

Folding bike on a budget

Posted by FrogDiedForYourSins · in r/foldingbikes · 3 years ago

I’m looking for a folding bike that is preferably under $500 but is fairly durable & versatile.

It is worth mentioning that I have posted to another cycling sub looking for a bike as I am under 5 ft tall, but I’m willing to look at almost anything as long as it fits me. I am also very much a beginner cyclist who definitely does NOT need something that will be used every single day.

I’m leaning towards a folding bike primarily because of how convenient it is to store in my apartment, car, etc. I am well aware that I may be sacrificing overall comfort in exchange for price tag.

Please let me know what you folks would recommend!

They look really good I have seen people riding them before. Plus I see them recommended here a lot. I actually have a Tern A7 that I got for about $500 back in 2020. I will say that it has cheap parts but that makes sense given that it's the budget model. At the same time when your derailler just breaks during a long ride that's not fun at all to have to deal with.

Anyway, from what I have heard here bed bath and beyond might have the zizzo bikes and I honestly wonder how they compare to the Tern folding bicycles. If they are indeed better then I wouldn't mind selling my bike for one of those.

So far so good. It's my first and only foldy, but it feels like a "real" bike. It's relatively slow, but that also means the gearing isn't going to break your legs on a subtle hill. There's only a coaster brake, so you need to be extra careful if you do end up picking up some speed down a hill.

All that said, I really like it and it's my daily work commuter. Folding it is easy and quick. And I think you could probably throw a front brake on if you really want to. Hope this helps!

Love my Zizzo Urbano. $429 gets you the decently good drivetrain of their fancier model a little cheaper due to some heavier cranks and bolt on wheels. If you don't mind a $479 price tag and would prefer a pound lighter bike with quick release wheels you could get the Zizzo Liberte.

I'm a long time cyclist and have a pretty low tolerance for poorly functioning, cheap bikes and I have been very happy with the Zizzo, even at their cheap price.

Best folding bike options

Posted by 321yawaworg · in r/foldingbikes · 2 years ago

Hey guys, good morning. So I’ve been looking for a new hobby, and I stumbled upon e-bikes. I was looking at foldable ones because I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment(we have elevators). I really didn’t think about the non electric option until now. I’m 6ft about 240 lbs. and live in a Houston area suburb. I would use the bike for exercise, exploring around my town, and occasionally to local markets. Any recommendations? Any input would be greatly appreciated!! Have a great day!

Edit: Also the E-bike I was looking at is $799 before tax, so I guess the range I would be looking at to spend is $300 to somewhere around $800.

Tern makes a very nice folding bike as well, but considerably more expensive.

I checked out the Origami Bicycle Co. site and there were specs for all their bikes except for the Swift...which looks like a sweet bike. I wrote them and they said they had fixed that on their site and sent me the specs in a .pdf. Now, let me be very careful here because it is not my intent to disparage what looks like a nice bike, but... I just could not see, after looking at more than a few folding bikes, how Origami can sell that Swift for only $440.

One way they have held down the price is direct marketing; they don't pay bike stores to sell their bikes for them. Shipping is included in the $440 selling price. You may ride the bike for two weeks and if you decide it's not the bike for you, you pay for return shipping. That's more than fair.

Another way they have kept price down is to use budget-level components on the frame. I searched for reviews of the disk brakes, the bottom bracket, the chainring, etc. and in each case the review made reference to that component as being "budget level". Nothing wrong with that it just gives me pause, when I have set aside up to $2k for purchasing a folding bike, to get one with budget-level accessories.

However, given that I won't be riding a folder more that 5 miles once or twice a week, an Origami Swift is still in the running for me.

Now I only have to worry about the chain when carrying my bike through a crowded train.

I'd look at some of the options from Tern, which makes several folding models with disc brakes, maybe the Verge D9: https://www.ternbicycles.com/us/bikes?filter%5B0%5D=bike_type%3A1491&filter%5B1%5D=folding_type%3A1499&filter%5B2%5D=folding_type%3A1500&filter%5B3%5D=folding_type%3A1501

Dahon also has some disc models: https://usa.dahon.com/products/launch-d8?variant=32282540081201

Edit: the Tern Verge S8i is a little over your budget but has some higher spec parts, and a belt drive: https://www.ternbicycles.com/us/bikes/472/verge-s8i

Best affordable folding bikes?

Posted by Tricky_Application50 · in r/foldingbikes · 2 months ago

Hi Im currently trying to buy a new folding bike. I used to have a Zizzo Campo that I bought in 2020. I was thinking of rebuying it but actually want to see if there were other options or anything better. For context, I just want to use it for recreational use (riding it to the park or locally) The most I’ve ridden before is around 8 miles a day. Would love some advice on this!

Check out the refurbished bikes at Zizzo. Mine was just like new with a couple of minor cosmetic scratches and scuffs.

Why not keep your Campo and upgrade as needed? Most parts are standard issue, and most bearings are the cup and cone type which are easily serviced for dependable  longevity. If yours is a 2019-20 model its probably an aluminum framed one, something you will not find in the current model or any sub $300 bike. If needing a folder, I'd suggest keep and upgrade the current one. I have two aluminum framed/non adjustable stempost Campos and for the same use as you; will not replace them until their frames break!

  1. For bike recommendation, you’re in the USA I assume?

  2. Do you need a folding bike? If you just need a bike that can get smaller for storage sometimes, just removing a front wheel gets a normal bike quite compact.

yes im in nyc, so I do prefer a folding bike for easier storage

Right on!
I'd keep your eyes on the Zizzo refurb section for a Liberte or an Urbano. I think you get a ton of value for that small price difference over the Campo: https://zizzo.bike/collections/refurbished

I live in New York City as well and 20-in folding bikes don't fold up as small as you would think.

The most affordable bikes are used bikes. IMO, the standard bifold 20” folding bike has changed very little over time. If you’re a casual user, outside of ease and convenience of getting a new bike, there is little gained over getting a good condition used bike.

Agree. Used is way to go.

thank you, yes I started looking at used ones but prices were almost similar to new ones. but i’ll definitely be open to it and still do some research!

First folding bike (and first bike in decades)--a secondhand Zizzo Forte. Loving it!

Posted by Sufficient_Collar290 · in r/foldingbikes · 7 days ago

I moved to a large urban area about 10 years ago, and I've been using the city's bike/ebike docking service to commute. Their quality of service and bike maintenance has taken a nose dive lately, so I started researching folding bikes (I can't store a full-size bike at my place). I researched, settled on a Zizzo Forte, and kept my eye out for a good deal.

I found one from a reputable seller, and biked about 3.5 miles through the city on a city bike, checked the bike out, and rode it all the way home. I love this bike! It's light, nimble, fast, and very sturdy. Granted, my frame of reference is the city bike, which is extremely heavy, slow, and about as maneuverable as a brick. My new Forte felt faster and easier than even the city's e-bikes. It's light enough for me to carry it upstairs to my little home gym.

There are only two minor issues. First, I have to learn how to quickly fold and unfold it--and I'll have this down after a couple more rides. Second, the 7th gear has a lot of slippage--all of the other gears work perfectly and shift smoothly. Given the price I got it for, I knew that I would need to fix one or more things. Honestly, tinkering with a bike is something I'm looking forward to.

Omg,  this zizzo started me on the path to Lectric xp 3.0, a trike for my husband so I don't ride alone, bought a truck so we could carry the bikes, added more range to our bikes, traded in the first truck for a nicer one (we never had a truck before and we loved driving around all the time), built a detached garage for the new truck and bikes, bought a second bike for me, Lectric Xpeak, then another bike because the Xpeak has a lot of issues, and, oh, I forgot to say that the zizzo was so bad I had to return it to Amazon (chain was so loose it would fall off after half a revolution of the pedal, brake rotors warped from the factory, a complete disaster). Good luck with yours, I have almost 3000 miles in 2.5 years ( weekend rider) and don't regret a thing.

the zizzo's rotors were warped? I thought they all had rim brakes.

My memory failed me, you are correct, it was not rotors, the derailleur needed to be adjusted, but a local shop quoted me about $100 and was not sure the bike was ever going to be road ready. The lectric 3.0 had issues withe the brakes and warped rotors.

I'll have to look up my Amazon order and check, I could be mistaken.

I have the electric version of the forte and it's awesome! after maybe 6 months of ownership and 1300 miles, I have gotten really quick at folding and unfolding. if I'm really trying I can probably do it in about 20 seconds.

I have one and love it. I did an ongoing review thread on it here:
https://www.bikeforums.net/folding-bikes/1305489-zizzo-forte-review.html

The folding/unfolding is not super quick, but you do get faster. One thing I still haven't gotten down is how to get the magnets to catch when the handle post is folded down.

You might find it's easier to carry up the stairs UNFOLDED, then fold it when you get up there. If not, invest in a couple of velcro straps to hold things together once folded. When carrying it unfolded, it's easier to do it from the non chain side, so you're less likely to grease your pants on the chain.

It FEELS fast, but isn't. I'm easily 2 mph faster on my gravel bike and probably 3 mph faster on my road bike, but on the Forte, I don't care. I'm sitting up straighter and looking around more. Speed isn't really the point on this bike. It's still easily 3X faster than walking though.

As for the shifting, it sounds like it might just need some adjustment to account for the initial cable stretch. If not, look and see if the derailleur hanger piece got bashed out of shape. The derailleur guard was an extra part to buy, but I bought it. You may want to buy one and bolt it on too.

Hey--your review was one of several that helped me choose the Forte in the first place! Thanks for the tip about the derailleur!

'glad it helped. I envision people finding these reviews years later and finding them useful.

The bike is just so damn useful. It could easily be one of only two bikes. (the other being a road bike, so I can keep up on club rides)

I changed my mind about ZiZZO's front bag. It's fine, just not top quality latches for the tightening straps at the sides. It works. It's SO handy, to be able to snap that onto the pignose on the front. There are other options, but anything really good costs double.

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Folding Bike

  1. Weight: Look for a lightweight frame (ideally under 30 lbs) for easy carrying and portability. Lighter bikes are generally easier to fold and transport.

  2. Foldability: Check how compact the bike folds. A good folding bike should fold quickly and easily, ideally in less than 30 seconds.

  3. Frame Material: Aluminum frames are common for their balance of weight and durability. Steel frames are heavier but can offer a smoother ride.

  4. Wheel Size: Smaller wheels (16-20 inches) make for a more compact fold, but larger wheels (20-24 inches) can provide a smoother ride and better handling.

  5. Gearing: Consider whether you need a single-speed bike for flat areas or a multi-speed bike for varied terrains. More gears can make climbing easier.

  6. Riding Comfort: Look for features like adjustable seats, ergonomic grips, and suspension systems to enhance comfort during rides.

Recommendations:

  • Dahon Mariner D8: Known for its lightweight design and compact fold, this bike features an 8-speed gear system, making it versatile for different terrains. It's also made of aluminum, which helps with durability.

  • Brompton M6L: A premium option, the Brompton is highly regarded for its compact fold and customization options. It offers a smooth ride and is perfect for urban commuting.

  • Tern Link D8: This bike strikes a good balance between price and performance, with a sturdy frame, 8-speed gearing, and a comfortable ride. It folds quickly and is great for city commuting.

Choosing the right folding bike depends on your specific needs, such as commuting distance, storage space, and budget.
