Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While these discussions provide insights into popular Ford sedans, it's important to consider factors such as your personal preferences for style, performance, and budget when choosing a vehicle. If you're looking for a newer model, the Ford Fusion's recent iterations might be more suitable, whereas the Crown Victoria and Taurus offer a more classic appeal. Additionally, exploring test drives and reviews can help ensure you find the right fit for your needs.
1998-2011 Ford Crown Victoria. I adore how it looks, I love the engine, and I love its legacy.
it's nice but probably the worst pantherbody. Grand Marquis, Marauder, and the holy Lincoln Town Car are nicer imo
The Crown Victoria, blessed be her name, is either your favorite or least-favorite car. Depends on which side of the light bar you were on I suppose.
1990 ford crown Vic...for the same reasons as this guy⬆️
Technically, the Lincoln Blackwood. It's got a 3 box design and a trunk therefore it's a sedan.
What does that make the F-150 then?
A big sedan with a bed.
Yeah last time I checked that's a truck. Try again
Chevy ss sedan
Volkswagen Phaeton W12
I miss that car
1974 Dodge Monaco
It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got the cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. A model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas
The Ford Fusion still looks modern, sleek and unique. In my opinion it’s still one of the best looking sedans.
2016 S 2.5l. Still going strong, Zeibarted no rust. I love the 16" tires pricewise when it comes time for new ones. Only thing is Ruby Red, my insurance full coverage cost more than our plain White 2021 Escape. We hit a deer once and the body man said it is a 3 coat paint and that's why your insurance is expensive.
Oh wow, I didn’t know that, but yeah mine is still going strong, just recently hit 142,000 miles! Hoping for 200!
Love my 2016 2.5l as well.
Probably my favorite version
I love my 2014 2.5l also the design hasn't aged Ford nailed it. I like the Fusions more than the Taurus
Yes, I agree
I just wanted to say for others out there - Had a 2017 Fusion 2.0 FWD Titanium that stayed with me for 8 years and put 115K miles on it. My first car I bought and want to say has been an amazing experience. Apart from regular maintenance, can say this year did not break down on me at any point. $0 spent on any issue. Absolutely loved this car and feel even in 2025 (8 years later) still so competitive with newer cars in styling and interior.
Ford did great job on the last gen of fusion, was sad to see them killing it chasing SUVs.
Unfortunately had an accident this year (no major damage i would say) but my insurance is going with total loss given the market value now.
If not for the accident, I had decided to drive it to it's death whenever it came. Amazing car, great memories and will always remember it fondly. RIP.
My condolences OP - everyday I live in fear of mine being totaled
With all the news of tariffs and what not, as well as the "benefits" of buying american what would be the best American Sedans. Most of the popular sedans are those made by foreign countries, so what would the american alternative to a accord or camry in terms of reliability, cost and gas milage. Also an american alternative to something like the Lexus ES and IS, BMW series, or like a C class.
If not for the sedan req -i love the wagon more than any other American car of the past 40 years....
Cadillac CTS/ATS/CT5
The V versions if your feeling the need for a more sporty/faster car
Love the V/Blackwing Cadillacs. If it only still had a Wagon version, wouldn’t have bought my M5 Touring instead…
Definitely the correct answer for the Lexus, BMW alternative.
As for the Accord, Camry alternative.
Chevy Malibu or impala is the only American sedans.
American-MADE: Lexus ES, Toyota Avalon, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Acura TLX.
American brand: Buick LaCrosse (2017-2020), Buick Regal Sportback, Ford Fusion (2013-2020), Ford Focus (2012-2018, manual transmission only), Cadillac CT5. (Most of these are also American-made)
Cadillac CT5 V Blackwing
Need to bring back the wagon….
Miss my CTS-V wagon.
And if that’s too large, the Cadillac CT4 V Blackwing
Crown Vic or a Town Car.
Was gonna say. I got an 04 town car for $300. Couple hundred in various repairs and maintenance later it was a good car. Had it almost 2 years, put 30k on it with very little issues. Also swapped the 3.27 gears for 4.10s and a limited slip diff so it can boogie if I want it to haha
Camry and Accord are actually made in America.
The last sedan from an American brand is Cadillac and Tesla.
Honorable mention for the Chevy SS here, have owned a shit ton of cars and my SS is my favorite DD.
It would take Toyota 10 years and 3 generations of Camry to outbid the Taurus. This was Ford's finest hour in the land of non-SUV's and trucks
This car saved Ford as they were losing money. 2. This goes to show when a car company puts their minds into building a car that is revolutionary this is what happens. A game changing car like the Taurus and Sable. 3. It might not be saying much now but this is when I believe that Ford became the best automakers (of the big 3) in the USA, surpassing GM. When I was growing up my neighbor was a Chevy man. In 1987 he and his wife bought a Taurus. When they switched to Ford I knew it was over for gm. To this day GM or Chrysler could never make a car remotely close to what the Taurus was. Since 1987 my neighbor has owned 3 Fords and now drives a Honda Accord (only because his son works for a Honda dealership).
The Fusion was also a genuinely good product and was very reliable, more than any other Taurus.
But by then, the Camry and Accord had pulled so far ahead and the market started shifting away from sedans so it never got the respect it deserved.
That’s because US Fusion a European Mondeo. And it was an awesome product line, even their station wagon looked bitchin’.
I have a 2020 Fusion and it's been very good to me.
Idk about better than any other taurus the 10-19 final gen, refresh included is notable for being unproblematic. Sure issues pop up here and there but the only one of note was the water pump failure and all Fords are prone to that for some reason. And the engine to date is considered one of Fords best. Excluding the SHO, just a NA 3.5 v6 paired to the tried and true 6 speed auto. Simplicity is what made the last gen taurus great. Very much what you see is what you got
The last gen fusion was another absolute game changer. 2013 until it disappeared. Fun to drive if you have the 2.0. Great looking while being sporty and edgy when most sedans looked boring. It sent every non luxury auto maker to the drawing board to make a great looking sedan that appealed to the masses. I loved my 2017 2.0 awd. That car was part of me. 8 years and 170k miles. Cried a bit when I traded it in. Didn't want to get rid of it. Great reliability too
It was a huge gamble, I think the development budget estimate (in ~84) was $3.5b - $11b adjusted for inflation. In the grand scheme of things, developing a new car is still expensive, but I don't think automakers are throwing around this kind of money anymore - goes to show how much of an insane gamble it was in the first place, but it paid off!
Such an insane gamble that the Fox Body LTD was sold beside the Taurus in case the Taurus failed.
With the costs of developing a new model it's quite amazing that each generation of the Honda Accord only is 5 years in duration. One thing they do well is keep their bread and butter vehicles current and updated, for better or worse.
The 95' Taurus SHO was an awesome sleeper
The latest SHO with AWD is a ripper dude.
I love the Taurus. All generations. From this one, the bean, to the latest design.
This was the Toyota Camry of the 90's. They were everywhere. Everyone had one.
I’m looking to buy a new vehicle, whether it be an SUV or a pick-up. Either one would work, but off-road capabilities are important.
What’s the best Ford on the market right now as far as safety, reliability and comfort are concerned?
Thanks in advance for your help!
EDIT: I’m open to suggestions about makes other than Ford, too.
I really like Ford vehicles but their build quality sucks on most vehicles right now. They’re working on improvements but it’s recall after recall currently.
I’ve found that historically the best vehicles Ford makes are the one’s they’re actually passionate about. F-Series and Mustang are the two nameplates that are the most reliable and probably the best that they make. They define Ford’s image so they are laser-focused on getting these right.
As for other vehicles? They just care about turning a profit so many of them are not well made and don’t perform as well. Just look at a Ford Escape. It’s an ok vehicle, but there is nothing outstanding about it. And there’s been several recalls on it and other models like the Explorer.
Stick to a model that Ford cares about getting right. F-Series, Bronco, and Mustang are the ones in the US at least they have the most passion for. Even then, the Bronco has had lots of quality issues.
This is true. I’ve got an EcoSport and don’t get me wrong, I like it. If you’re one of the people who don’t care about power, and just need something relatively small/cheap to get from point A to point B- then it’s fine! I find it to be a good first car if you’re looking for something to get the kid. But you’re right, it’s definitely lackluster, and if Ford still made them I wouldn’t buy myself another one. Though it definitely does it’s job.
It’s interesting to see so much EcoSport love here. It’s honestly the worst car I’ve driven in the last 25 years or so. But I’m glad it serves the needs of some people here!
I have to take up for the EcoSport as well. Lord I hated that thing, and I drove it like that as well. 160 miles round trip, six days a week, two small mountains in the commute. I’m super nuts about maintenance, and of course that helps, but in three years of 80 mph driving, it never left me stranded, got good mileage, and took everything I threw at it - snow, mud, 100+ temps in traffic, me forgetting I had a weak 4 cyl instead of my old V8- and asked for more. A tune helps these motors A LOT, but it was easily the best commuter car I’ve owned. Which isn’t many lol
FWIW, my dad bought an F150 a couple of years ago and it's been nothing but problems. He's even considered getting it lemon law'd.
Also FWIW, I've owned two Fords and they've been great for me. The most reliable car, by far, that I've ever owned was a Ford Mustang... and I've owned Toyotas.
Probably the cam phaser issue. Did he get the 3.5L ecoboost engine? Those engines were in the shop constantly when I sold Fords
I had a relative who worked at Ford, and his words about their cars were "garbage, all garbage! Except the F150, we put a lot of resources into that line."
They make a lot of good stuff. Most SUVs. Mustang. Have had some duds for sure. We have an f150 and expedition and both are great
Explorers, Expeditions, Broncos, F150 up to F550, Mustangs. Ford makes these vehicles great but everything else is lackluster.
Mustang Mach E GT
Are you dead set on a Ford?
We have a 2015 Ranger Wildtrak and absolutely love it, but we need a second car. Definitely considering getting another one. 😂
The Fiesta ST MK7 is a master piece.
I remember the Contour
The equivalent would be the Contour SVT!
Indeed! With a high output 2.5L with 200hp.
An excellent piece! Had the US counterpart.
Was it a 2.5-litre V6 as well?
Yup , it was called the SVT over here.
ah yes,the contour
What a beauty of a performance sedan!
I know they're discontinuing production but I don't know what impact that will have on maintainability.
Ford is no longer making sedans? I find that hard to believe.
> Ford is no longer making sedans? I find that hard to believe
Your skepticism is justified. Ford will continue to make sedans and small cars. They just won't be selling them in the USA.
They’re only keeping the Focus and Mustang as far as their cars go. They want to focus on the crossover/SUV trend. In the US at least
Focus was just canned last week. Ford said with all the tariffs it’s no longer economically viable. So just the mustang after 2020 or 2021 at the moment. Hopefully they’ll bring over the next gen Mondeo
>They want to focus on the crossover/SUV trend
And escape from that market if they don't have the edge in the segment then there's no fusion
....I'll let myself out now.
It has always been unwise to buy a Ford sedan. Get yourself a Toyota, Honda, Mazda, or Subaru.
I mean, Mazda is Ford with a different badge. Look under the hood and you see FoMoCo.
Please show me a 2018 Mazda which says 'Ford' under the hood.
> Mazda is Ford with a different badge
A decade ago, there was some truth to that statement. In 2018, it is no longer the case.
Most of those engines were designed by Mazda hilariously enough.
If memory serves, Ford is still producing Mazda designed engines for their vehicles.
I'm going to politely veto Mazda and Subaru from your list. Relatively speaking, fine cars that definitely have their strong points. Comparatively speaking, Toyota and Honda will be running without issue for much, much, much longer. Source: I interact with various makes/models at various points in their useful service life every day...it's Toyota or Honda or GTFO if you want a trouble free (maintenance only) vehicle that'll go 200k+.
> I'm going to politely veto Mazda
...
> Toyota and Honda will be running without issue for much, much, much longer
I'm going to politely point out that Mazda makes products of high enough quality that Toyota is willing to put their badge on them.
Designed by Mazda, built by Kia, sold by Ford. I always wanted one in yellow.
This person Festivas.
Continued by Saipa, in Iran.
Unpopular opinion but I love this car everyone on this sub would also love.
I've always loved these cars, but my mom absolutely hates them.
That's not what your mom told me last night!
It’s definitely a popular unpopular opinion
I like it in the idea that anyone could go to their local domestic brand dealer and come home with a quality Japanese designed car.
Now u go to a ford dealer asking for a nice Japanese car and they call you names and throw pens at you
Buy an F150, we’re begging you, they’ll say
And “Election”
Oh yeah and the OG Top Gear US
I saw a pic of someone who turned one into a riding lawnmower. Looked kind of cool
Mid Michigan has a crazy amount of Flex's still on the road.
They must have been one of the most reliable vehicles Ford has made in the last couple decades.
I have a 3.5 Taurus x and love it. The 3.7 or non turbo 3.5 was quite reliable- the ecoboost- reliable under 150k. Otherwise new turbos all around.
My 2012 just died at 287k. It was the best vehicle I've ever owned. I had no mechanical issues and put 260k on it. Just regular maintenance and 4 sets of brakes, one rear caliper, 3 windshields.
The water pump failed going down the interstate and I just couldn't justify pulling the engine to replace it. The doors were starting to rust out from the inside and the last time I had it on the lift one of the jack points folded in so but salt will do that.
It was so good, Hyundai made one and called it the Santa Fe.
Buy Volvos. They’re boxy but they’re good. We know they’re not sexy. This is not a smart time to be sexy anyway, with so many diseases around. Be safe instead of sexy. VOLVO. Boxy, but Good.
I guess you ain't seen the V90. That car is very sexy.
I have a 240 best car ever
I have one and love it. If Ford announced a new one I’d be slapping a deposit on that bad boy tomorrow, provided they didn’t make it an EV or whatever
We love our 19 Flex! There is so much comfort and utility to it. And it's nice driving something a bit different than all the other SUV blobs out in the market these days.
19 Flex checking in! Love it, ultimate family vehicle, we love the Flex! And silver with the black appearance package looks nice imo
Ford managed to sell a station wagon to Americans without calling it a station wagon. It's big, powerful, comfortable. Aside from MPG I don't see the downside of owning a family car like this
I’m interested in such a car. However what’s holding me back for now is the sheer size, (I’m European) and the rear end. What’s up with that? Totally out of sync with the front. Front end is pretty, rear end, ugly. Imho
best ford sedan
Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Ford Sedan:
Model Options: Ford primarily offers the Ford Fusion as its main sedan option. However, the Ford Taurus was also popular in the past, though it has been discontinued.
Performance: Look for engine options that suit your driving style. The Fusion, for example, offers a range of engines from efficient hybrids to more powerful turbocharged options.
Fuel Efficiency: If fuel economy is a priority, consider the hybrid or plug-in hybrid versions of the Ford Fusion, which can achieve impressive mileage.
Interior Space and Comfort: Assess the interior space, seating comfort, and cargo capacity. The Fusion is known for its spacious cabin and trunk.
Technology and Safety Features: Check for modern technology features such as Ford's SYNC infotainment system, smartphone integration, and advanced safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
Reliability and Reviews: Research reliability ratings and user reviews to gauge long-term satisfaction and performance.
Recommendation: The Ford Fusion is generally regarded as the best Ford sedan available, especially in its later years (2017-2020). It offers a good balance of performance, comfort, and technology. If you're looking for a used option, the Fusion Hybrid is an excellent choice for fuel efficiency. However, if you prefer a more sporty feel, consider the Ford Mustang, which, while not a traditional sedan, offers a coupe experience with practicality.
