TL;DR If you enjoy Starfield, consider exploring Elite Dangerous, Outer Worlds, No Man's Sky, and Mass Effect for similar space exploration experiences.
Elite Dangerous
Elite Dangerous is frequently recommended for its expansive open-world space experience. It offers a 1:1 replica of the Milky Way galaxy, allowing players to explore less than 2% of it so far [1:2]. While it doesn't allow walking around your ship, it provides extensive ship customization and the ability to walk on planets with the Odyssey expansion
[1:9]. The game is praised for its immersive spaceship flying experience
[1:4].
Outer Worlds
Outer Worlds is often mentioned as a close alternative to a Bethesda-style space RPG. Though smaller in scope compared to Starfield, it features hand-crafted planets and focuses more on narrative and exploration rather than space combat [2:3]
[4:1]. Players appreciate its concise yet engaging experience, likening it to a smaller-scale Bethesda RPG
[4:8].
No Man's Sky
No Man's Sky is another popular choice for those who enjoy open-world space exploration. It offers resource gathering, base creation, and millions of planets to explore [3:1]. While lacking some RPG elements, it allows players to focus on exploration and settlement building
[3:2]. Some users suggest that enhancing NPC interactions could make the game feel even more alive
[4:11].
Mass Effect Series
The Mass Effect series, especially the trilogy, is recommended for its rich narrative and immersive space setting. Although different from Starfield in terms of gameplay mechanics, it offers a compelling sci-fi story and character-driven experience [3:1]
[5:2]. Mass Effect Andromeda adds sandbox elements for more exploration
[1:7].
Other Notable Mentions
So I really love space games and always have. I really like No Man's Sky and Starfield. I have been looking for a game that is similar to No Man's Sky where it's open world, but more focused on living on your ship and traveling around the universe. I don't even know if this game exists, but I thought I'd ask because you never know!
Continued: Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I definitely have a lot of games to try out now!
Check out Elite: Dangerous.
Seconding Elite. There’s no game like it. It’s been out for ten years and less than 2% of the galaxy has been explored (it’s a 1:1 replica of the Milky Way).
You can’t walk around your ship but there are many to choose from you can extensively modify them.
You can walk around on planets and in stations if you get the Odyssey expansion.
I never got that far, but I think you can walk around in your big ass freighter thing.
I somewhat begrudgingly agree. I hate Elite for a lot of reasons because it could have been THE game, but it failed to reach its potential time and again because of shockingly stupid management.
But having said that, quite simply no other space game feels like flying a fucking spaceship as Elite does.
Elite Dangerous, in VR, with a HOTAS is probably one of my top 10 gaming experiences.
There's absolutely nothing like it.
Some days I was just as space trucker, other days I was a bounty hunter. Some days shifted the balance of political power in the system and some days I explored ancient alien artifacts.
But by far my favorite was mining. Diving into my own cozy little pocket in asteroid ring and mining the hours away.
Underspace and Freelancer perhaps, but you don't get to walk around your ship.
X4: Foundations does, but exploration isn't a focus.
Is not open world like these two but Mass Effect Trilogy and Mass Effect Andromeda (this one is sandbox) are really inmersive and great games
Yeah, no. They're hardly open world and they are space adventures, not space sims
Andromeda gets a lot of shit but I honestly thought it was alright back when I played it.
Just replayed it after playing the legendary edition - it definitely scratched that mass effect itch.
Starsector.
You are WELCOME.
Open world space games: Starsector (Mount and Blade in Space), Star Valor (pewpew), Starcom (pewpew),
Sadly (for you) none of them are like Starfield [Bethesda in Space] or No Man's Sky [Farm Simulator in Space]
Space Engineer is fun too but it takes heaps of autism to get around the mechanics.
I want a fun game that's similar to starfield. Something set in space where you can explore different planets would be preferred (already played the mass effect trilogy, empyrion, and no man's sky).
Starfield is trying something that has never really been done so it's a bit difficult.
The only games I can think of are Freelancer (considered as an oldie goldie of space games) And Rebel Galaxy Outlaw.
Problem with these games is that you only control a ship. But you can land on planets, trade, go for bounties, free roam etc.. The idea is there but again with have currently no space game that has "everything"
I won't even talk about Star Citizen because first of all, it's a multiplayer game and you can get yeeted by other players at any given time, and 2nd, last time I played it was in January and it was unplayable so :/
Outer Worlds is about as close as you can get to a Bethesda-style game set in space. The scope is much smaller though. There are a handful of hand-crafted planets and no space combat.
Star citizen
DEAD SPACE 2 and Alien Isolation
Elite dangerous kinda maybe. Games similar to any Bethesda game is a tall order. They take decades to make.
I’m relatively new to gaming and really like Starfield. But I need to know if there are any games similar to Starfield but in a different setting, maybe like Roman times or an apocalypse theme? I’ve played Dayz and it’s really fun but there’s no story to it
Do you guys hate No Man's Sky this much that nobody talked about it?
Okay, if you like these roleplay based games, of course Fallout is the first series you have to go. If you want to stick to space, Mass Effect is a great saga, although it's very different in some aspects.
Now! If you want resource gathering, base creation, different spaceships with their different stats (not player customizable), crafting, MILLIONS of (almost empty) planets where you can put your feet on, fauna/flora encyclopedia, hundreds of weapons, space battles, and an over-epic writing... NO MAN'S SKY
Although NMS lacks (mostly) the RPG site of Starfield, you can play Starfield ‘as if it was NMS’). Basically, once you’ve unlocked all the weapons and outpost parts you can just explore the Settled Systems, build your extraction and industry outpost network and let your resources to pile up. Ignore everything else. Just be an explorer/settler. A pity we don’t have the NMS settlement mechanics.
Fallout. If you enjoy the building aspect then Fallout 4. If you want a condensed sci-fi story, then Outer Worlds is a lot of fun.
And of course there’s always Skyrim, but with bows/swords instead of guns.
These two IMHO are at the apex:
* Roman quest -> Skyrim Imperial path FTW
* Apocalypse -> FO4
Beyond that it digresses and opinions multiply... and I will be called wrong.
Why, then, the world's mine oyster, Which I with sword will open.
For a completely different game play style try Sid Meier's Civilization series.
~K
This is the answer. Fallouy4 and Skyrim are the predecessors to Starfield in the two setting you asked for. In fact, I do wonder if you knew this and were baiting us? But they are where you should go next.
If you have GamePass they are also free to play.
Take a look at Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
Great game, but I definitely don't get the same vibes from it.
Still might be worth checking out since the sequel comes out this year
SpaceBorn 2
Played elite and mass effect any other suggestions?
Starfield looks like what our worlds should have been. I liked outer worlds overall but felt it lacked sooo much and so many elements of it felt unsatisfying to me (I only played the first iteration so maybe it got better), but nothing I looted felt important and the customization didn’t feel useful. But I did like the world and exploration and have been super excited about starfield in particular because I know it’ll have that Bethesda magic that so many RPGs lack (for me).
Freelancer is what i've had at the back of my mind ever since manual spaceflight was confirmed. I can imagine it being very similar. The system Maps will probably be quite different, but i can see starfields space travel playing and feeling quite like freelancer. Or at least more like that then something like Elite.
But we'll find out out in time.
But in all seriousness if you like space games and solving mysteries, do please try out Outer Wilds. It's one of the best games ever made
Sounds alot like star citizen, except the tech is now theoretically possible. That of course assumes decent management which is not what star citizen currently has.
It’s not quite the same but Prey 2017 might scratch a similar itch.
Playing through it right now for first time to scratch the Starfield itch and highly recommend!!
There's a little bit of it, but I'd argue that what Prey really scratches is the BioShock itch.
No man's sky, obviously
NMS needs to take that final step with it's NPCs to make it really feel alive. They got them on planets, they got them walking around in settlements, etc... But now let us fight them, let us watch them fight the sentinels. Let me cause a huge ruckus by shooting up a space station. Give me the old quicksave > Murder spree gameplay loop that only Bethesda games can offer.
I like it a lot, it’s like a Bethesda rpg on a much smaller scale. Still lots of choice and exploration but the experience is a bit more concise. I like it a lot
Never played but ironically I would say outer worlds will play similar to starfield as well
In outer wilds you can fly your own space ship but you can't do it in the outer world
Not really the space aspect but more of the like traits and open world with creatures and guns.
No man’s Sky
Try Starsector.
Deliver Us The Moon is really cool in terms of being aboard a ship and exploring.
Fallout 4
Fallout 4 would probably give you a good feel for what the core of Starfield will be like
I've put countless hours into Star Trek online but it just kind of feels off. Like they didn't go into combat nearly that often. Half the stories took place on the bridge and didn't even leave the ship at all. I'm wondering if there's any game that plays more like actual star trek episodes. Where you play as a captain and do the whole exploring strange new worlds and boldly going where no one has gone before, but significantly less emphasis on space combat. Like actually handling things diplomatically or at least having the option to and multiple options. Also the management aspects too of customizing your bridge officers or at least managing them to some degree.
Before anyone mentions it, I have played Space Haven and I do enjoy it, but it basically seems more like Rimworld in space to me. It's almost so close to rimworld that I end up just wanting to play Rimworld after a few hours of playing it. Also I feel like it could still use a bit more polish too. I have played Star Trek: Bridge Commander too and it definitely is fun and does a good job at replicating a lot of the show but it still has a bit more focus on combat than what I'm looking for.
FTL is the closest I've felt to being a Star Trek captain (but it's pretty combat focused)
Outer Wilds us the closest I've felt to being a scientist exploring new worlds (but it's a one man show)
I genuinely don't think there's anything quite like what you're looking for. I guess I've heard good things about Starbound, maybe try that?
I wouldn't have thought of Starbound for OPs post, but will add that it is an amazing game for space exploration if you don't mind the Terraria styled survival/crafting aspects. You can add crew to your ship, but I haven't done it so don't know if it'll really scratch that Trekkie itch.
Outer wilds is amazing. Worth a try even if it isn’t a perfect fit for Star Trek
Mass Effect Andromeda is all about exploring a new galaxy. But like all the other games people mentioned, it does have lots of combat. All the Mass Effect games give you the experience of managing your team/crew and interacting with them. Just like Star Trek, you lead the bridge and have people there giving you information and you have video communication with other characters.
They're old-school but Star Trek 25th Anniversary (can be found on GOG) plays so much like episodes of Star Trek. It's even spaced out in an episodic format. It's basically a point and click, but your actions can cause various outcomes, including keeping your red shirt alive!
I was going to recommend Star Trek on the NES. Not quite the same, what with the limitations of the NES, but similar.
Maybe something like [PULSAR: Lost Colony] (https://store.steampowered.com/app/252870/PULSAR_Lost_Colony/)
I agree too. It's a lot of fun with some neat easter eggs. Closest I've felt to being in a Star Trek episode.
Oddly enough, the oldest of oldschool games - Starflight, is what I would suggest to you here. It was released in 1986, and it's quirky as all hell, to the point where if you don't exit the game properly, not only do you lose your save files, but you need to reinstall the game, but it was hugely ambitious for its time and very influential.
If that's maybe a little too oldschool, Star Control II has more of an emphasis on combat than Starflight, but I wouldn't call it a focus. You can play its open-source version (called The Ur-Quan Masters) for free.
I was going to suggest starflight 2. I liked it much more than 1, spent a lot of time playing that back in the day.
It also is however a shooter with heavy focus on combat, there is no way to negotiate out of combat most of the time.
I can't really think of something that is truly like OP wants, i.e. a plot heavy exploration simulator. I'd totally play it if there was, but given Starfield's demonstrated gameplay, it seems like companies don't think it can sell without being a shooter.
Although it is very far off from being like Star Trek, Outer Worlds at least lets you skip pretty much all combat if you use dialog options to bypass it.
> It also is however a shooter with heavy focus on combat, there is no way to negotiate out of combat most of the time.
Most of that is infantry combat, and not space combat, right?
I adore Mass Effect, and I'd love to expand my space-based gaming shelf!
I'd really welcome your suggestions. Any genre is fine, but space and its mysteries has to be the common denominator.
Thanks so much for sharing your suggestions! Means a lot because I really don't know what to try next.
Three upcoming games I would keep my eye on are The Expanse - Osiris Reborn, The Outer Worlds 2, and Exodus.
It will give you an entirely different space based sense of wonder, but Stellaris.
That’s how I felt the first time I played. Possibly because I was also reading Bobiverse at the time. To top it off, the laptop I had back then had keyboard with lights. It seems Stellaris hijacked the keyboard and changed the lights to match the star of the system I was in
In a similar way, Sins of a Solar Empire 2
Seconding Stellaris.
It's a strategy game, but one with insanely rich story beats which convey that kind of "Star Trek" discovering space feel that Mass Effect evokes.
Probably the only other game I've played that gives that kind of feeling.
Outer Wilds doesn't have a lot of dialogue, but I've never encountered any other game that captures the beautiful wonder and mystery of space exploration like that game does.
Really hoping the upcoming Expanse game fills this void :')
I just saw some gameplay and it looks so good.
Have you seen Exodus yet? Also gave me Mass Effect vibes. https://youtu.be/DmJxSKn47EE?feature=shared
Ohh yess forgot about that one. That one is being developed by ex Bioware devs that worked on the ME trilogy.
Space bears let's goooooo
That was my first thought when I saw some of the interviews, same style of cover based group combat
no mans sky rules
2nd for no mams sky, but I'll also add elite dangerous if you have pc.
They stopped the live service for console and I just don't see the point in grinding when I want the changes to the galaxy tonhappen
Since I have watched the gameplay reveal, there's been this itch that wants me to play this game considering how stunned I was after watching the live showcase. The problem is Starfield releases next year. And that's a long wait, so I wondered if anyone could recommend something similar to tame this feeling while waiting. Also I've played no man sky which means it's not an option.
Mass effect trilogy and No Mans Sky
Mass Effect trilogy is always a good shout
Ah thank you for reminding me I've played Andromeda, but never the first 3. I'll give it a shot
The other replies to this comment shows you how much people love those games lol.
I highly recommend them. Very good sci-fi RPGs with branching choices and storyline.
One of the greatest gaming experiences I ever had was the Mass Effect legendary edition trilogy!
I just recently replayed the Trilogy and had so much blast, i wish i can re experience for the first time all over again.
1 and 2 were amazing. Never played 3 but I hope to after bearing 1 and 2 again. You're in for a treat
I honestly tried Outer worlds but I found it to be pretty boring and repetitive. This coming as someone that plays Skyrim religiously.
Dozens of hand-crafted systems to explore, deep lore, playable with a mouse and keyboard, and a thriving mod scene that's still around today.
The Outer Worlds?
Yeh I may have had tears in my eyes, I just wanna play now! Hogwarts legacy comes out at Christmas so that should keep me busy
Depends on what you're after. Nothing exactly like Starfield exists.
If you want a space sim/RPG hybrid, there's several options, mostly old. I would personally recommend Freelancer, if you can get it.
If you want an action RPG that is set in space, the obvious choice is Mass Effect. There's also The Outer Worlds, which I personally consider to be a perfectly acceptable game.
Hey there everyone! I've been recently looking for a game that lets me sort of simulate having my own space ship, crew, survival, battles, etc. The whole sci fi vibe. I've grown up loving Star Trek, and recently watched The Expanse and loved it, so kind of going for that vibe.
Games that I've recently tried that have fit that niche but not to A T:
-Faster Than Light: I love this game, recently tried out its mod/overhaul multiverse and fell in love, however FTL is more of a run based game, similar to I'd say roguelikes, than pure survival sim/management sim
-Rimworld: Odyssey: I love rimworld, recently snatched the Odyssey DLC since it promised something similar, but it's a bit limited in scope (smaller ships, mostly used for travelling to nearby asteroids than pure space travel/sim). I've also bought Rimworld on GOG, so I haven't tried any of the rimworld mods yet, and I'm not sure if they are available outside of the steam workshop (since some games have mirrored mods on workshop versus nexus mods, and some just don't exist outside of the workshop).
-Mass Effect Trilogy: I loved the trilogy as well, but it's more of a story based game than a sim, though the universe and the world is incredible imo
-Stellaris: Same as the rest, I love this game, but it's more of an entire space empire sim than a singular space ship/survival sim
I've mostly enjoyed almost every automation/simulation/management game, including Dyson Sphere Program, Satisfactory, Big Ambitions, Oxygen not included, etc.
I'm welcome to all suggestions!
Starsector. It's not an easy game, but the freedom it offers is worth the time you'll spend learning the ropes. You can be a trader, a fleet commander, an explorer and many more things, and since you're already familiar with FTL, you may find some aspects, like the management side, similar.
I've actually given Starsector a try! I forgot to mention this in the actual post. I found it very fun, but it's closer for me to Stellaris than a space ship sim if that makes sense.
Elite Dangerous is immense. It has epic space battles, exploration, you can explore every planet in the galaxy, get involved in the politics or simply live your own life out in the far reaches.
This actually looks and sounds perfect! I can't believe I've not seen or heard about it before honestly! Though from the steam page it says it has a solo mode and a multiplayer mode, is one essential/preferred over the other? I tend to play these types of games on my own so I'm not sure.
The mode is on a per session basis. You can choose to play on solo mode when you don't fancy getting attacked by rogue players or working together with them. And then login to multiplayer session when you want to do all the multiplayer stuff.
Personally I always play in solo mode unless a friend wants to join me.
From the description I suspect this is the gem they are looking for.
Jump Space is a game that’s releasing next month on the 19th. It’s kinda like sea of thieves in terms of PvE content.
Sounds insanely fun to hop on with friends, definitely gonna check it out when it comes out!
Elite Dangerous
Not released yet but watch out for Expanse:Osiris Reborn. Elite Dangerous is the best we have atm. Star Citizen is in development but quite raw sometimes and will be a few years from release.
Curious what other games starfield lovers play.
First person games with environmental story telling.
Bioshock
Dishonored
Fallout
Elder Scrolls
If you put Dishonored with those titans I must give it a try
I have played practically every major game release in the last 30 years. Gaming is my deepest passion and most beloved hobby.
Dishonored 1 and 2 are on my Mount Olympus of games. The clockwork mansion in D2 is a case study in what games can be. Staggeringly imaginative and original.
Playing them nonviolent / undetected is a challenging, genuinely perfect 10 (for me) experience.
If I could erase my memory and experience a series from scratch, it would be a three way tie between The Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, and Dishonored.
As a side note so I’m responsive to the OP, I’m 38 hours into Starfield on PC and very happy with it.
Try outer worlds as well if you haven’t
I think Andromeda was a fun open world space action adventure game, I think if it had no ties to the Mass Effect franchise it would be looked at way more favorably but following up that trilogy just heaped soooo many expectations on that game and did it a disservice.
Rpgs like it, lot of them being Bethesda styled.
Love cyberpunk 2077, borderlands series, Mass effect series (yes andromeda too).
And more traditional JRPGs.
I feel like more people are coming around to Andromeda now. The pain of launch has faded and the worst bugs have been fixed for years now. The main Mass Effect sub no longer has the same unrelenting hatred and the Andromeda Subreddit and other gaming subs are seeing more love for it.
Androemda was my first game in the series. I won a copy free. Before this I hadn’t played any of the games and hadn’t seen much of the online discourse. I really loved it and to this day love the concept of intergalactic travel in fiction. It inspired me to play the rest later too. I think it worked out well in the end because I got to play the game as it was without any preconceived notations of what it “should be” or anyone in the community hyping me down.
I’d honestly prefer a dedicated sequel to continue the story and improve upon the mistakes of the last. I feel like it has real potential and needs a chance to realize it. Sadly at best we’ll probably just get some attempt to connect both of the plot lines with some intergalactic wormhole or something. If you ask me it’s a bit too soon and Andromeda needs more development but I gusss we’ll have to settle.
It did have a really rough launch. The state that you and I love it in did not exist until quite a bit of patching had been done.
There were also some preconceived notions of what a Mass Effect game should be. Andromeda was a whole different type of story compared to the OT. OT was about saving an established galaxy. Andromeda was about exploring and building up a new one. The open world was widely panned. It definitely needed more effort put in but considering the theme of exploration and being a pioneer it made more sense in concept than the semi-linear style of the OT.
And I think people really wanted another Shepard so when they saw Ryder they were disappointed. Shepard is an experienced soldier with a soldier’s attitude. Even by the time of the first game they’ve seen plenty of action and developed into a tough, capable person. Shepard is a leader and a badass right off the bat. The galaxy looks up to them. Ryder is pretty much the polar opposite. They’re young, inexperienced, unready, and no one believes in them. They have to prove themselves over the course of the game. That was a big change that not all OT players liked.
The changes could have been executed better but I believe they’re very solid conceptually. If there ever is a sequel to Andromeda I think they should continue to run with the open world and Ryder’s personal development instead of giving up on them and jsut closing everything off and making Ryder magically a badass
Definitely not the best Mass effect but considering ME1 is my favorite in the franchise and Andromeda took a lot from it I ended up loving it.
Exactly. I even still play Morrowind at least a few times a year. I don't even mod Bethesda games and have still sunk literal 1000s of hours into their games. I love plenty of other games but nothing else really scratchs the same Bethesda itch for me.
Right now I have Bethesda, Rockstar and CDPR as my big three.
