Best Garlic Press Recommendations

TL;DR

  • Top recommended garlic presses: OXO Good Grips, Kuhn Rikon Epicurean, and Rösle Stainless Steel.
  • Alternatives include using a knife or a microplane for different textures and ease of cleaning.

OXO Good Grips

The OXO Good Grips garlic press is frequently recommended across discussions for its durability and ease of use. It has a lifetime guarantee and is praised for being easy to clean if washed immediately after use [1:11][2:2]. Users appreciate the ergonomic design and the fact that it efficiently presses garlic without leaving much residue behind [3:1][3:3].

Kuhn Rikon Epicurean

Another highly recommended option is the Kuhn Rikon Epicurean garlic press. It is noted for being sturdy and well-built, capable of handling numerous cloves with ease [4:1]. This press is also highlighted for its simplicity in cleaning and its ability to extract all the garlic from the clove, making it a favorite among users who prioritize efficiency [5:1].

Rösle Stainless Steel

The Rösle Stainless Steel garlic press is praised for its robust construction and ease of cleaning. Users have reported long-term satisfaction with this model, noting that it remains effective even after years of use [3:4][3:10]. The design allows for easy pressing and minimal waste, making it a worthwhile investment despite its higher price point [4:12].

Alternatives to Traditional Presses

Some users suggest alternatives to traditional garlic presses for those seeking different textures or easier cleaning options. A microplane grater is recommended for achieving a mashed texture and is noted for its versatility and ease of cleaning [2:7]. Additionally, using a knife to crush and mince garlic is suggested as a method that provides control over the size of the garlic pieces and avoids the hassle of cleaning a press [2:3][4:9].

Other Considerations

For those looking for more unconventional options, the "rocker" style garlic press made of stainless steel is mentioned as an easy-to-clean alternative with no moving parts [5:3]. While not as common, some users find these rockers effective for quick garlic processing without the need for intricate cleaning routines.

Garlic press recommendations

ORIGINAL POST

I’m looking for recommendations for the most over-engineered and indestructible garlic hand press on the market. I’ve recently destroyed 3 different brands of press within 1 or 2 uses. Closer inspection of the failures makes it clear that these things are built to fail and as a result I’ve give up looking and have had to go back to using pre-crushed garlic like an animal. There must be something better out there!

What are the three brands you've recently destroyed?

I personally use an OXO garlic press.

I know a lot of people swear by the old school garlic presses. You have to buy them basically second hand, though.

I don’t remember all of them but the last one I think was Prestige. That one snapped off at the thinnest part where the handle joins the head. Thanks I will check out the OXO brand.

Honestly. If you have the time, forget the press, cut your garlic with a knife. But if you NEED a garlic press, get a mincer instead. Easier to clean and maintain and is never gonna break on you.

mickthemick1 · 2 years ago

I've used a grater for it and it minces it very well.

[deleted] · 2 years ago

Agreed. Just most cheese graters are huge and inconvenient for garlic. A mincer is more appropriate.

makeanich · OP · 2 years ago

Thanks, that’s a great technique to learn. I’ve done something similar before by smooshing the garlic with a knife and some salt but it doesn’t work well on my weekday plastic chopping board only my heavy wooden board.

1 upvotes on reddit
T
TooManyDraculas · 2 years ago

Just do it with a knife.

Garlic presses can only produce minced garlic, and your garlic shouldn't always be minced. Worse they make garlic taste like farts.

https://www.seriouseats.com/how-to-mince-chop-garlic-microplane-vs-garlic-press

If you must. Oxo makes a good press. If you can't keep that in one piece there's solid metal rocker style presses. It's a curved plank of stainless steel.

5 upvotes on reddit
makeanich · OP · 2 years ago

Thanks that article was very interesting. My takeaway is that for long cooking it doesn’t seem to make a difference how the garlic processed. They didn’t test medium cooking times so It might have more of an effect there.

1 upvotes on reddit
T
TooManyDraculas · 2 years ago

From what I recall there's sort of a hard cut off where the sulfur compounds responsible break down. Believe it's like 30 minutes at simmering temps.

I think the kicker on these things is they only do minced. There are flavor differences from cutting garlic larger that you can taste after longer cooking.

Then they are heinous to clean properly. Especially as garlic oils build up on them. And they're actually slower if you're doing more than a small amount of garlic.

Overall for me. The utility doesn't outweigh the down sides.

Im looking for the best garlic press!

Most of us know the questionable experience of a shitty piece of kitchen equipment. For me, garlic presses are among them.

What's the best garlic press you know and can recommend?

Most important for me are ease of cleaning while being reasonably good at pressing garlic (how much force you need/ how complete the garlic is pressed through)

Thanks in advance and I wish you all very aromatic herbs and spices for this season!

Oxo Good Grips Garlic press

j_a_shackleton · 1 year ago

100% OXO Good Grips. What the garlic-press haters are missing is that if you wash it immediately after using it, the garlic comes out so easily that you don't even have to use soap or a sponge.

I don't use one. I've had them before, but they're more trouble than they're worth to me. I mince it with a good sharp knife. It may take a minute or two longer but I end up with the size I want, not crushed, and no messing with a gadget before or after.

I use a Chinese cleaver. Give it a solid whack with the flat of the blade, pile the cloves up, then give it a quick chop to reduce it to the desired size. Including washing up a garlic press, I reckon I'm quicker than the gadget. The trick is to really smash it with the side of the knife - it does most of the work instantly, and stops it flying all over the kitchen.

Edit: like this

That’s fun (interesting). Chinese cleavers are having a moment it seems. I have several largish Japanese knives but no cleaver. I haven’t even held one that I can remember. I often go to a smaller knife for garlic.

I usually just smash them a little bit to loosen up the paper, then the intact clove is easier to slice. I slice them thin on the first pass, then a few cross cuts on the little pile gives me a mince of whatever size I want. There are some recipes, mostly soups or beans, where I smash a whole clove and just toss it in the pot.

A microplane.

It gives you that same mashed/pureed texture, but is infinitely easier to clean and can be used for 1000 other things.

If im only grating one or two small cloves? Absolutely, much easier to clean.

But if you're mashing several cloves for a marinade or something thag requires a lot of garlic then a garlic press is the way to go.

Worth the effort cleaning, which, if you do it right away and not let the garlic dry out its actually not that hard under hot running water.

I use a garlic press from IKEA (KONCIS), it is simple, sturdy and easy to clean. I have it now for over 5 years and I'm still happy with it.

After pressing, I just remove the excess garlic with the back of a knive and let water flow trough the holes - clean.

Hi. Not sure if this is the right place or allowed. But I’m looking for a good garlic press that isn’t a mega pain in the bum to remove the garlic skin from after crushing each clove. Any suggestions? I have a garlic grinder but I’m looking specifically for a press!

Thanks I’m advance and please don’t roast me for crushing garlic or something weird lol.

If you just smash it with the flat part of your knife I find the skin comes right off. I press it with a twisting press I found on spruce eats from NexTrend but part of the appeal for me is that it does both ginger and garlic at the same time in a decent quantity.

Nothing works better than the flat side of a knife. I have a big Chinese cleaver thats great for doing multiple cloves at once. I always trim the root and top first and they pop right out of the skins. A heavy pestle and morter makes light work of the peeled cloves but I mostly just use a knife to roughly chop and then put it flat to the board and use my palm to smear it against the board. Be careful not to slice your hand open though...

Just to offer a different answer (since everyone covered microplane/graters):

For a lot more uses than you would expect, you can just smash a clove of garlic hard with the side of a cleaver and then add it to a dish and it breaks down pretty well. Cut it once or twice in half and it breaks down surprisingly small for the effort.

It's not as fine as if it was minced, but you don't need to peel it and the clean up is incredibly quick and easy (flat chopping board that probably already got used, plus the flat side of a cleaver). Plus, it takes maybe a second per clove (maybe less, you can do multiple at a time too).

If you do it for a soup/stew/sauce that cooks for a while, the whole clove breaks down after a few dozen minutes too!

7 upvotes on reddit
urban_thirst · 8 months ago

Agreed. The age of the garlic matters a lot too. If you can get fresh juicy garlic it smashes much more easily.

I usually just leave the garlic a little larger with this cleaver trick, and cleaning up is so much simpler and less smelly. Plus, I kind of like slightly larger chunks of garlic anyway, lol.

+1 for the all metal version of the garlic rocker. This replaced my garlic press. Easier and faster to clean and takes up less drawer space than the typical garlic press. Given that it's essentially a curved piece of stainless steel, I don't foresee how it wouldn't last a lifetime. Maybe it would bend or break with enough downward force exerted on it, but it shouldn't take much effort to crush garlic. I always hand wash mine so not sure if dishwashing impacts its durability in any way.

While garlic presses have their detractors, this solid chunk of stainless steel: the WMF Profi Plus has pulverised thousands of cloves of garlic over its 10 year life (so far). Weighing in at almost a full pound, it has been through the dishwasher every time it’s been used - not a speck of rust or hint of deterioration anywhere. It's definitely not faster or easier. I just throw my press in the dishwasher.

That being said, it comes down to the recipe. If you crush garlic early you're going to lose all flavor as it cooks out.

But if you crush it into a dressing or later in a cooked dish, it's way better!

What? Using a garlic press is easily 10x faster and easier than finely mincing garlic

I prefer a microplane.

cleaver, slap, pull out the peel, chop, scoop. If you are doing more than one or two the knife is faster.

all stainless steel - very hard to fuck up. I think ours is from 2007? About the most work i have to do is some times use a toothpick to clean out the stuck garlic parts.

WMF kitchen utensils are Sooooo good: have a vegetable peeler that’s 15 years+ old that will still take your finger off, and a ceramic pepper mill that is so smooth

WMF make nice stuff in general, though I also like Rösle.

I have one from ikea that is also all steel. Not as fancy as this but I’ve had it probably 10 years too and I don’t see it breaking anytime soon. Cost like 5 bucks.

Garlic press is a hell sent illusion. I can't find use for it in the kitchen.

Posted by CloudCalmaster · in r/Cooking · 2 years ago

This a rant thank you for your understanding. If you can change my mind i'm up to it, but i just burned all the garlic presses in the house.

After many years of cooking i found my garlic press. And my mind was blown. What is even the use for it?

If you cook there's a really high chance that you already have a knife in use. A knife that you most likely use to peel the garlic anyway. Even if it's just a small boning knife...

Why would you grab a tool which just destroys half of your garlic then waits for you to sweat tears washing the other half off in the sink?

okay.. i understand some people can't use the knife that well. Well, after learning how to cut onions i found garlic the best to develop your skills on.

Here are my tips:

  1. Peeling: you cut off the blunt end and if you don't want pretty slices hit it with the knife so it's easier to peel. or just continue the first movement to peel it.
  2. Slices: You slice it. Yes with the knife already in use.
  3. You want paste? Crush the garlic with the flat side of the knife. (if you don't feel the power within, chop it before) then chop the crushed garlic and press/crush the chopped garlic with the flat side gently pulling the knife towards you. repeat if necessary. (i might explain it badly but this takes just one "where is my garlic press" time)

there's probably more you can do with garlic i just realized this is getting long.

I think garlic press is a scam built by the cooking industry. If there's an art style of cooking without a knife i think they still do the garlic with just knuckles or anything but a press.

Is there any other use for it? Like breaking fingers? Target throwing?

Edit: Even if you use a mortar. You can use that to crush your herbs, ginger, chili and spices. so it is not a one way ticket to the sink

Edit 2: It's great to see people find use for it. If it brings joy to any if you it's not useless. This was just in my mind while cooking.

My garlic press doesn't require you to peel the clove first.

I'ma assume you think a potatoe ricer is also a useless tool?

If your wasting half your garlic your not using it correctly, any left over or on the sides, group up for a few loads at the end.

And while yes it's easy to mince with a knife, the press is still significantly faster.

I'm pro potato ricer and anti-garlic press. I only use my potato ricer a few times a year, but it does make the smoothest, most heavenly mashed potatoes. I have no use for a garlic press.

Salty_Shellz · 2 years ago

I'm the exact opposite. I absolutely hate smooth mashed potatoes so i use a regular masher, and I also hate how sticky my hands get chopping garlic so im team press.

CloudCalmaster · OP · 2 years ago

Well i Googled it and y.. I never tried a ricer so i can't form a real opinion. i have a regular masher.

i assume for grouping up the sides you use a knife?

You don’t like garlic presses. That’s fine.

Other people do like garlic presses. That’s also fine.

I'm with you OP.

I've had a press for years but very seldom use it nowadays. For 1 or 2 cloves I guess the press is...ok, but since I mostly use more garlic than that (at least 6 or 10 cloves at a time) I find it faster & easier to use other methods (knife or mortar & pestle).

Garlic press recs?

Posted by peafowlenthusiast · in r/Cooking · 1 year ago

Hi! Just looking to narrow down a gift idea. A dear friend of mine insists on using a garlic press always. Hers is on its last legs. Has anyone encountered a garlic press that a)works well and b)has minimal spillage over the top? Could you share where to get it? TIA and have a great day/night :)

I hope this is in line with the rules, didn’t see anything that jumped out but if it’s against anything mods pls delete and I’m sorry

I use the rocker style, just a big chunk of stainless you smoosh down on the cutting board. It works well, easier to clean, and can't really ever break.

Ooooh I must research this. That sounds like it solves a lot of pain points as far as garlic presses go

The mince is probably not quite as fine as the usual press style, but it works for me.

I'm more of an old school Chinese cleaver slap 'n slide method myself or a microplane at times. However I've tried the IKEA garlic press and it is surprisingly good for what you pay.

It's built like a mini potato ricer. You get a lot more leverage and less waste than a more traditional lever based one.

Thank you!! I’d love to try out the slap and slide lol. Hearing a fair amount of IKEA so I’ll have to check that out too!

best garlic press

Key Considerations for Choosing a Garlic Press:

  1. Material: Look for a garlic press made from durable materials like stainless steel, which is resistant to rust and easy to clean.

  2. Ease of Use: A good garlic press should require minimal effort to crush garlic. Ergonomic handles can make pressing easier, especially for those with limited hand strength.

  3. Size and Capacity: Consider the size of the press and how many cloves it can handle at once. Some presses can accommodate multiple cloves, which can save time.

  4. Cleaning: Choose a garlic press that is easy to clean, preferably dishwasher safe or with a removable chamber for easy access.

  5. Design: Some garlic presses come with additional features, such as built-in cleaning tools or the ability to mince other ingredients like ginger or nuts.

Recommendations:

  • Zyliss Susi 3 Garlic Press: This model is highly rated for its ergonomic design, ease of use, and ability to crush unpeeled garlic cloves. It's also easy to clean and dishwasher safe.

  • OXO Good Grips Garlic Press: Known for its comfortable grip and sturdy construction, this press features a built-in cleaner and can handle multiple cloves at once, making it a great choice for frequent cooks.

  • Alpha Grillers Garlic Press: This is a budget-friendly option that is highly effective, easy to clean, and made from durable stainless steel. It also comes with a silicone peeler for added convenience.

Choosing the right garlic press can enhance your cooking experience by making garlic preparation quick and easy!
