What Redditors are Saying

Best Gas Cooktops

TL;DR

  • High-end options: Wolf, Thermador, Miele, Bluestar [1:1], [2:2]
  • Mid-range options: Whirlpool, GE Profile, Bosch [3:2]
  • Consider features like powerful burners for searing or wok cooking [4:1]

High-End Brands

For those seeking top-of-the-line gas cooktops, brands like Wolf, Thermador, and Miele are frequently recommended. These brands are known for their superior performance and durability, though they come with a higher price tag [1:1]. Bluestar is another high-end option praised for its open burners, which offer excellent heat control and precision [2:2].

Mid-Range Options

If budget is a consideration, Whirlpool offers reliable mid-range cooktops with good burner systems [3:1]. GE Profile and Bosch are considered a step up from Whirlpool in terms of quality and features [3:2]. These brands provide a balance between cost and functionality, making them suitable for many households.

Features to Consider

When selecting a gas cooktop, consider features that enhance cooking efficiency and convenience. Look for models with powerful burners, especially if you plan to do a lot of searing or wok cooking [4:1]. Some cooktops come with removable grill sections or griddles, which can be useful for cooking multiple large pots or pans at once [1:3], [5:1].

Material Considerations

The choice of materials for burners can affect both aesthetics and performance. Brass burners are durable and withstand heat well but tend to discolor over time [2:1]. Aluminum burners may warp with extensive use but maintain their appearance better. Some brands offer black porcelain burner caps as an alternative [2:1].

Alternative Cooking Methods

While gas cooktops are popular, some users suggest considering induction cooktops due to their safety, speed, and precise control [4:2]. Induction cooktops might be a worthwhile option if you're open to alternatives beyond gas.

So we're trying to replace our gas cooktop and I was wondering if anyone is a diehard fan of their own and want to share :)

Also any features we want to look out for?

As of now, I've got my eye out on this 30" tempered glass gas cooktop by Empava just because it seems like it would make cleaning easier but my husband doesn't feel so confident since the brand isn't well known

Does cost matter? If you just want the best of the best then Wolf or Thermador or Miele

Kinda does but I know my husband does have his eyes on Wolf appliances so he'll love that you suggested it.

Wolf gives me the "expensive for no reason, but to say I'm rich" vibes but if you actually like using it for cooking then that's definitely useful!

Help me - I need the best gas cooktop out there

Posted by poursuitedebonheur · in r/Appliances · 4 months ago

I’ve got a full suite of Gaggenau appliances—two built-in ovens, a built-in coffee machine, a wine fridge, and a gas cooktop. Hands down, they’re the best appliances I’ve ever used. That said, the gas cooktop is driving me nuts.

The burners are this polished brass color that turns a blackish-brown after just a week of regular use. Performance-wise, it’s flawless—amazing heat control and precision—but I can’t stand how quickly the brass discolors and ends up looking grimy, no matter how well I clean it.

I’m considering swapping it out for something like a Wolf cooktop or another high-end option without brass hobs. For anyone else who loves to cook and cares about both performance and aesthetics, what would you say is the absolute best gas cooktop out there?

If you don't like brass burners, you'll have to go with aluminum burners. Brass is pretty much better in every way except it will patina. Aluminum, when used a lot will warp eventually (although it will take a long time). There are brands where for this reason, provide black porcelain burner caps.

Gas Cooktop advice.

We are redoing our 70's kitchen and are looking at new cook tops. My wife likes the Looks of the Whirlpool WCGK7530PS, or WCGK7030PS.

Is one brand that much better than the next? Is this a Ford vs Chevy thing?

Edit: he question is, is Whirlpool a good brand? Should we be looking at other brands?

I sold appliances years ago and whirlpool makes a very good burner system,,, unless you go high-end like wolf or Viking, they’re all about the same,,, I’ll keep in mind if you live in California they will be banned in a few years, forcing everybody to get electric or induction,,, you should look into induction anyway they’re not cheap, but they use far less power than either gas or electric and cook in about a third of the time New York

Good Day,

I'm in the process of renewing some of my appliances around the house and i wanted to replace the cheap gas cooktop that i currently have.

anyone has a good gas cooktop to suggest that is available in Europe?

My kitchen top is dark marble and i believe a black glass cooktop is a better idea, i have space to place a 4 or 5 burner without issue.

Unless you want to spend a lot more on something like a Wolf or Thermador you're probably going to continue to get lousy knobs. I've found you can often take the part number for your knob and get a set of identical knobs on Amazon for less than the price of one official OEM knob.

gotcha. Yea our stove broke because now the knob part won't budge and we had to turn off the gas. We have to replace the knobs almost every month...

What Gas Stove Top Would You Recommend?

Hey :)

So I will be replacing my gas stove top as it is outdated and 2 of 4 do not work burners. I would like recommendations for other brands.

They can have as much burners, obviously still within my measurements. I have read many articles online, but I want some first hand experiences from people!

What brand would you recommend? What exact model do you have and recommend? Which one has had little to no issues? And even what brand to avoid?

Thank you!

Gas cooktop -tips and recommendations

Has anyone deliberately switched from induction to gas? What motivated the change—performance, control, reliability? Any regrets? If you had a chance, would you go for a modular setup with both induction and 2 gas burners?

Also, please share what to look for when choosing a gas cooktop. Is steel enamel better than glass? Any top-rated brands/ models for gas cooktops in the UK you’d recommend?

I noticed from your other posts that the concern is the heat provided for Indian cooking on Induction.

The temperature on a decent induction cooktops such as Bosch/Siemens can give you consistent temperature to the cookware up to 220°C and can be set to other lower settings using “PerfectFry” which is basically sensors under the glass reading the temperature of your cookware through the glass.

When comparing gas cooktops, the actual burners that give you the power/performance are commonly sourced by the major brands from the same gas burner / jet manufactures in Italy called DEFENDI or SABAF which you can see branded on the actual burners.

This is why most major brands will have a similar max output on the largest burner, which in the UK this is often advertised in KW and usually maxes out at around 4-5KW or 13-17,000BTU. https://imgur.com/a/gMip3Tn

Depending on the size of the cooktop and your budget, you can get into higher spec brands with higher out put if that is the goal.

The main concern I would have is that you might be trying to get really high “wok style” heat which can’t be achieved with normal indoor home appliances compared to commercial grade or outdoor options as there are regulations that limit how much output a gas cooktop provide in a residential home.

This is where it is best to have an area outdoor setup of an inexpensive wok burner that will give you intense heat and the performance that some people want to achieve, I have a friends that do heaps of asian style cooking and this is the only way to achieve the results. Example below of a 12KW or 40,000BTU burner.

Thank you so much. Yes, my concern is mainly about low-heat/simmering tasks like heating milk for my South Indian filter coffee, making Indian tea, boiling milk, and preparing dosa on a large pan. I really want to switch to induction, especially since I have a small utility/wet kitchen where my gas hob is. But I’m worried that if the induction cooktop can’t handle these tasks well, my main kitchen won’t be as functional as I’d like it to be. This is why I am now checking the options for gas only/ modular setup

I found temperature control to be much easier to achieve on induction than on gas. Low-powered simmering may not even be possible on a gas stove as the lowest level you can turn the knob to may be too much already.

We switched from a Miele induction top to a Blue Star gas range. Zero regrets. Just couldn't get used to the heat control on the Miele and the open burners and overall simplicity of the Blue Star is awesome.

What's a really good gas oven that will last?

I have a gas Bluestar and I love it. I got it because I was able to test one- my friends have one- and I loved how powerful the high burner is (it's the 30 inch with four burners, one is extra powerful so your 'quick boil', and one is a simmer/low setting one) and how well the oven heats- even and quick.

Electric ovens are much better than gas. They cook far more evenly and heat up faster. What you want, most likely, is a dual fuel range. Gas cooktop, electric oven.

What's best depends on your budget and what size you're looking at. At the top end, Miele, Thermador and Bluestar are probably the top 3 (have heard not so good things about Wolf lately, but if you like them, throw that in).

One way to stabilize the temperature in your gas oven from opening and closing. The door is to put high temperature ceramic tiles on the very bottom rack. This will help keep the heat really regulated inside of the oven.

Duel fuel is the way to go. Have a gas cooktop and electric convection oven. Oven is awesome and love the gas cooktop for even cooking. (being able to use it when power goes out is also a huge plus)

Retired chef here. Bread and souffles were my *only* job for 10 years.

Quick-boil burner? You are describing a range, not an oven. I can afford any range on the market. I chose a 60" Thermador dual-fuel commercial depth range. Gas up top. Electric steam ovens. (Gas is NOT even and therefore not the best solution for baking.) It has two oven compartments -- one small, one large. So I can choose the size to the amount of baking I am doing. Usually the small one is sufficient.

There are very few parts to this range. And they're interchangeable with every Thermador range ever made. So repairs probably won't be necessary. And if they are, they can be done by the owner in a matter of minutes. (Assuming the owner can move the thing. Mine weighs 600 pounds.)

I loved everything about the 60" Thermador but couldn't get past the nonstick griddle. We are going 48" Miele instead with a separate steam oven.

best gas cooktops

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Gas Cooktops:

  1. Burner Power: Look for cooktops with a range of burner outputs. High BTU burners (15,000 BTUs and above) are great for boiling and searing, while lower BTU burners (around 5,000-10,000 BTUs) are ideal for simmering.

  2. Number of Burners: Consider how many burners you need based on your cooking habits. Most cooktops come with 4 to 6 burners, but larger models may offer more.

  3. Material and Build Quality: Stainless steel is a popular choice for durability and ease of cleaning. Look for heavy-duty grates that can withstand high heat and are easy to clean.

  4. Control Type: Choose between knobs or touch controls. Knobs offer tactile feedback, while touch controls can provide a sleek look but may be less intuitive.

  5. Safety Features: Look for features like flame failure safety devices, which automatically shut off the gas if the flame goes out, and automatic ignition for convenience.

  6. Installation Type: Ensure the cooktop fits your kitchen layout, whether it's a built-in or freestanding model.

Recommendations:

  • Bosch 800 Series: Known for its sleek design and powerful burners, it offers a good balance of performance and aesthetics. It features a high BTU burner for quick heating and a simmer burner for delicate tasks.

  • GE Profile Series: This cooktop provides excellent performance with a variety of burner sizes and a continuous grate design for easy movement of pots and pans.

  • KitchenAid 30-Inch Gas Cooktop: Offers a powerful dual-ring burner for high heat and a simmer burner, making it versatile for different cooking styles.

When selecting a gas cooktop, consider your cooking style and kitchen space to find the best fit for your needs.
