TL;DR
Recommended Beginner Sets
The Callaway Edge set, available at Costco, is frequently recommended as a great starter set for beginners. It includes everything needed to start playing golf and is praised for its forgiving nature [1:1],
[3:1],
[3:3]. The Callaway Strata set is another popular option that comes with a bag, making it convenient for new players
[1:2]. Both sets offer good quality clubs that can help beginners get accustomed to the game without overwhelming them with advanced features.
Budget-Friendly Options
For those looking for more budget-friendly options, second-hand clubs from reputable brands like Wilson or Mizuno can be a smart choice. These brands offer good price-to-performance balance, and older models can still perform well for beginners [2:1]. It's important to ensure that the clubs are in good condition, checking for worn-out faces, grips, or shafts
[2:3].
Customization and Fit
While buying a complete set is convenient, some users suggest visiting a golf store where professional fitters can help tailor clubs to your swing and preferences. This can include trying different shaft materials (graphite vs. steel) and flexibilities (regular vs. stiff) [5:1],
[4:1]. A personalized fitting session can significantly improve your comfort and performance on the course.
Additional Recommendations
Other sets mentioned include Cobra Fly XL, which received positive feedback from re-beginners [5:2]. Maltby entry-level irons and Vice packaged sets were also suggested for their affordability and quality
[3:2],
[3:3]. For those who prefer thrifting, marketplaces like Play It Again Sports can offer good deals on lightly used clubs
[3:1],
[3:7].
My husband is taking up golf as a total beginner. His birthday is coming up and I'd like to get him started with some clubs, but I know nothing about golf. What are some necessary clubs to get started? Apart for what I should get....is there anything...brands I should avoid?
Callaway strata set (edge is also good. Strata comes with a bag)
Callaway edge set at Costco and your husband will be in good hands for a while. It has everything he needs.
I 2nd this. Definitely a great beginner set.
Absolutely love mine.
I would second as many others have the Costco set is a great start if he hates em return em.
Id just give him a gift card for a golf store and let him go talk to the people who work there. Hes going to need clubs, a bag, tees, balls, glove, shoes, etc.
Brand means nothing, budget means everything
Always enjoyed watching golf, and have been meaning to start playing for a while but just never really did. Have a friends bachelor trip coming up which will be centered around playing golf. I have very old clubs from when I was young, but since it’s something I want to start playing more often I want to look into getting some new clubs (as well as lessons).
My friend told me that I should just get a nice set of irons to start off. I understand it will be a little pricey and am ok with that. What brands should I start looking into?
What would you recommend for Driver, putter, and other clubs?
Thanks for the help!
Get a starter set off Amazon. Top flite or Wilson. Should come with most everything needed club wise.
For Irons you don't need to spend a lot of money, the tech has barely changed in 15-20 years so just get a decent name brand, you can get an older set of irons which cost £700 new, in good condition, for £100-200, something like Mizuno JPX800s, or MX-20s, for example. Just check the faces/grips arent worn out and the shafts aren't pitted, and that they have forgiving "Cavity Back" design.
Same applies for putters. Something like a Ping Anser or Craz-E (depending if you want blade or mallet style) is like £20-50 and works just as well as any new putter 3x the price
Its woods/drivers where you are well worth getting something newer, as there have been advances in the tech. But again you don't need to spend loads, you can get Cobra drivers new for £200ish, something recent but second hand by a name brand is more like £100-150 (I paid about 100 for my Callway Mavrik Max)
Budget?
Didn’t know where to start and was just trying to get some advice. I hadn’t seen many helpful posts on it. No need for you to comment if you’re gonna be a dick
I can’t wait for the Facebook marketplace screen shot saying, “good deal”?
This OP will surely send pics of what he buys with a HOW DID I DO for sure
Honestly, for a beginner it hardly matters, as long as it's not a cheap Chinese rip-off.
I would recommend to get a second hand set of a decent brand. Wilson in my opinion has a good price/performance balance.
Doesn't even need to be very recent. Around 10 years old is still fine. No need to get woods or driver, stick with irons.
Thank you!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hello, I am 19 and getting into golf. I’ve been playing with my friends kids set and it is extremely small for me and I’m looking to buy a budget set but I have absolutely no clue what to get. Any recommendations would be great!
Lots of people recommending the Costco edge set, which is pretty decent. The driver is pretty crap as is the SW. The hybrid is ehh and the irons are really good for a beginner. The putter is a highlight of the bag (although the Velcro head cover it comes with is awful, lol)
I’d look at Maltby (golfworks.com). You can get their entry level iron set (STi2 Gen2) for $250 (6i-GW). Get some wedges for $60 each (52° and 56°). Look at Callaway pre owned for a driver that’s a few years old ($140ish) and maybe a fairway wood and a hybrid ($150 for both). Find a cheap putter on FB marketplace for $50. So that’s $750 for 12 clubs that will last you longer than the Edge set will and you have 2 spots open in your bag that you can fill as you improve (probably with a 60° and another wood or hybrid or a utility iron)
Another vote for the Edge set found at Costco. It’s a full bag and the clubs are extremely forgiving. Another vote here dor Stix clubs too! They are really good. Full sets don’t break the bank. I’d also recommend the Vice packaged set. It has fantastic reviews.
I’m not sure I’d call it a “full bag”. It’s extremely lacking at the bottom of the bag, with a really shitty SW that is 10° off the PW.
I bought the Edge set, and wished I had just gotten rid of the SW immediately and gone with a 48°, 52°, 56°, 60° wedge setup or 50°, 55°, 60° instead of ending up with an awkward gapping from the 44° PW to my 50° GW
But are you a newbie golfer? This kid is 19 and just getting into the sport. IMO, everything you just said would go over a beginner’s head.
An Edge set is perfect for someone who knows little about the game and is just getting into it. There’s zero reason for a beginner to worry about gapping when they are just focusing on getting the ball in the air and straight.
I purchased the Edge set two years ago and replaced some wedges. Great set for the price.
Worth looking at second hand sets that are hardly used. You won’t be surprised about how many people pick up and drop a hobby
For a budget set if you have access to a Costco membership they have a pretty nice Callaway starter set. Stix is another fairly cheap complete set. Mind you when I say cheap for golf clubs that’s between $500-600. If you don’t have that type of budget you might need to go thrifting, goodwill, play it again, market place.
I'm very new to golf, played as a kid and learned the basics. But looking to get back into it, the clubs I have are kind of dated but still useful. Looking to upgrade to some more beginner friendly clubs, especially the driver and woods/hybrids, I'm best on the 6-8 irons and very inconsistent on everything else. not looking to break the bank and will be fine with older clubs.
Hey, welcome to the golf club! Keep swinging, it'll get easier. Enjoy the journey!
Callaway Edge set at Costco is a common suggestion on this thread.
You need to add more details for anyone to even have a chance at making recommendations for you. We don’t even have a budget to go off of.
I went to a golf store that had a simulator and a professional fitter. He watched me take a bunch of swings with a variety of clubs, gave me multiple ones to try, and set me up with some good game improvement clubs. Beyond that, practice.
I grew up playing golf until I was in my teens. 30ish years later I decided to take it back up. I still have a surprisingly good swing and my short game is solid. My drives tend to slice pretty bad but I’m working on that.
Basically, I’m a beginner but because I played so much when I was a kid I should be able to outgrow the beginner stage quicker than someone just starting out.
I’ve been using some junk clubs I got at a yard sale and I know they’re holding me back. What are some decent beginner clubs I should grab that are a reasonable price and will still be fine to use if I stick to it and get to an intermediate stage?
I’m a re-beginner too. Callaway Edge typically gets a lot of praise. I got a set of Cobra Fly XL and really like them.
I think the edge are good for true beginners. The 3 wood and driver are not great. The irons are 15 year old. For a true newbie they are great because they are reasonable for starters.
If you are halfway decent I’d level up. Go to a shop and hit some clubs. Graphite vs steel. Light vs heavy shaft Reg vs stiff.
Go to your local store and swing some game improvement irons.
If a total beginner had a budget of $500, what would be the best way to distribute that money into buying clubs, balls, and a bag? Should that money go towards a 10 clubs instead of 14 for now? Should I spend half of it on a good iron set that’ll last me years? Should I get a nice bag so that when I walk the course I don’t go home with aching shoulders every time? A Scotty and a $40 driver?
I bought a Callaway Edge set from my local Costco for around $500 (price may have gone up a little since then and they are hit and miss with being in stock). They’re great for beginners in my opinion. But that being said, I would maybe look for some cheaper used clubs and invest in some lessons; doesn’t matter how nice your clubs are if you can’t hit them correctly. As far as balls- find the cheapest you can because you’ll probably lose a dozen or more each round until you’ve been playing for a while (speaking from personal experience 😳)
I’ve seen that you can get used balls for really cheap on eBay and places like LostGolfBalls. Is that something that you’ve tried? Do you know anyone who’s had good or bad experiences with that?
As a rookie myself, I could not recommend LostGolfBalls any higher. Great pricing, honest product, and you can go confidently onto the tee box knowing you’re about to lose a .75 ball while your buddies missile ProVs into the pond at $5 a clip.
There’s almost always a 15% coupon and don’t be afraid to spend over $75 for free shipping, because you be losing balls like that.
I’ve used lostgolfballs.com a bunch of times. They sell a 120 pack of mint/near mint assorted brands for $100, and then you can get 500 tees for like $10 bucks there also. And then on top of that there’s usually a 15% discount to apply. That should be plenty to start out with and will be as good of a value as you’ll find.
I also advice to go for used balls in the beginning. Until a certain skill level, you aren't going to notice the difference anyways. Look for ebay or craigslist or facebook or something.
You can get used balls for free as you're bound to find some searching for your own 🤣
On sale at Callaway preowned

Definitely do NOT get 14 clubs. Around 8-10 would suffice.
Do NOT buy the latest models. You will save a lot by looking for used clubs that were released about 4 years ago... and they won't be any worse than the new models.
Play a cheap ball. As a beginner, they will all feel and perform exactly the same.
Check Facebook marketplace as well, some great uses clubs out there you could get
Calloway preowned
https://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/complete-sets/compsets-2021-edge.html $371
If you are new to golf, be advised that Golf is a marketing heavy sector. People want to sell their stuff and promise great things. As a beginner, most of it, isn't really necessary. If you are just trying the game without any serious commitment, go for a used set of irons (as long as PW and SW is included) and a putter. (Later add a wood or hybrid).
Get some used balls.
Invest into some early lessons. Maybe two to get you started and then one per month in the beginning. It really makes sense to learn it the "right" way from the beginning onwards, save yourself the time for later "re-programming".
Fitted clubs, latest models, newest golf balls - there is a need for it. But it often isn't a beginner, who will benefit from it. But fyi, try not to get the oldest irons in the world. Should be made after 2000 or 2005. Earlier products can be great and great value but if anything really increased in the last 20 years, it is mistake tolerance. Means you can hit and older club really well when everything lines up, a newer model will give you good results, even when not everything is lined up.
Realistically, how many clubs would I need as a beginner? I don't want to drop hundreds of dollars on a "beginner set" of 10+ clubs just to grow out of them/realize golf isn't for me, so I was hoping to buy a small few individual clubs that could get me by on my entry into the sport.
If you’re in the US, the I think Golf Roots do “tester” sets that are driver, hybrid, 7 iron, wedge and putter. They cost about $100 but you can send them back for a full refund if golf isn’t for you, or $100 off your first “proper” set.
There is a course near me that has a beginner class and they provide clubs if you don't have them. If you have never played before, I would recommend seeing if you can find something like that. It gives you a couple group lessons to get the basics and allows you to see if you like golf without buying your own stuff.
Or, hit up something like yard sales or fb marketplace. You can probably pick up a full set of (older) clubs for around $100-150. They might not be very good, but it would get you started.
Pitching wedge, 7 iron, putter. All you really need for as a new player. Driver/woods will be a much different swing. Having just the 7 and PW will put you in a much better position for success.
I’ve been playing for 20+ years and regularly go out with irons only. Simplifies the game.
You might find it doesn't cost that much more to get a decent full set than buying single clubs. Having disparate clubs won't do your golf good, in any way. Start with a decent, used set of irons. Get lessons. You can add woods later.
I would do, Driver, hybrid of some sort 2-4 or a 5/7wood then 7iron a wedge and putter is basically bare minimum I'd recommend.
I'm overwhelmed with the whole process and have no idea where to begin to get a new set of golf clubs. Am I supposed to go get fitted and they'll recommend me a set there?
I would like a set from either Mizuno or Taylormade (idk why) but don't know which set would be a good fit for a beginner. I understand blades are not recommended for beginners but are there any other good non-blade sets from mizuno?
Please suggest any clubs you think would be worth buying, I don't mind investing a bit now as I develop my game and continue to play for years, thanks!!
I have found the Tour Edge brand to be very easy to hit and good value for new golfers.
With that budget see about getting fit as that is always best.
Should I get fitted if I'm still a beginner and my swing is still developing? Are would it be better to wait..?
You make a good point about your swing developing. There are many websites like GolfSpy and Driving Range Heros as well as YouTube Channels like 2nd swing that will give you reviews of most brands. That can give you an idea of how they hit and what you connect with. Most brands have low to mid priced sets and i would recommend something like that. The E or C 523 series from Tour Edge is a great starter line up for any beginner, imo.
I would say wait after a full season. Really decide if you wanna play before you get fitted. It can cost you a nice chunk of change to do so.
There are several starter sets worth buying. Range between 400- 600.
Spend this season playing and take a few lessons then get fitted
I believe tour edge is owned by or partnered with Cobra now so their overall quality has gone up quite a lot the last few years.
Oh very interesting. I did not know that about the Cobra part. TE has been around for many years. I had thought that the ownership was still with the original founder David Glod, but I could be wrong, https://www.touredge.com/aboutus.
I picked up a TE Exotics 3w several years ago and then looked into the company. Made in the US I liked. Since then I picked up the C721 driver which I snapped the shaft on they replaced it right away. Good service with a price that is a bit below the big five (with similar performance).
Cobra F9 driver (<= 150 on eBay)
Taylormade RBZ 5 wood (50 eBay)
Taylormade RBZ 7 wood (100 eBay)
Mizuno jpx 919 5-PW (480 including GW on eBay)
Kirkland wedge set (180 new)
Used white hot putter (~$50 eBay)
That’s $1010 so it’s close
This is the best advice here imo.
A great set of quality clubs, decent price, that will last OP quite some time.
How beginner are you?
TM still makes a RBZ starter set that’s pretty good.
If used is okay, then try you could probably get something from the M6 or Sim generation for about $1000.
I've been on and off for the last 2 years but have been recently playing a lot before winter. Will be playing a bunch this summer and want to invest in a good set. My swing is definitely still developing and will be taking more lessons this spring.
Then you don't need expensive clubs
Get the Callaway Edge set from Costco
All the clubs you need are in the set, just grab a bag and you're good to go
Hit up u/tabascopro as he can help find stuff for you at Callaway preowned. This or you can check out Sub70 golf and their preowned clubs. The owner Jason is a great guy and they help you find what you may need.
Hey All,
Not sure if I should post this in the discussion or WITB page, I wanted to start going to the driving range and soon start playing on the golf course but not sure if I should invest in a starter set or buy individual clubs for the time being until I become more serious? If so, any recommendations used or new? Just needed some friendly advice since I'm a totally noob, I would really appreciate it!

Was thinking these for a beginner full set: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XKZW8BZ/ref=twister_B09X2HJC83?th=1&psc=1
Get a cheap set! I spent $200 on mine from a guy who literally just collected sets from random people and sold them at good prices. You’re going to figure stuff out about your golf game as you play and you’ll figure out what you think will work best for you. After some playing I started loving gold more and I figured out that the driver and putter in my initial set were trash so I upgraded those in a very expensive way.
Was thinking about that, found a new wilson beginner set but was debating on pulling the trigger.
Cobra makes a great beginners' box set that includes everything you'll need for a long time, and it's like 500 bucks for all 14 sticks and a bag. Pick up a couple of boxes of Kirkland v2 balls for $25 and a glove, and "viola", you're a golfer.
Who's going to get the tees?
Driver off the deck. This dude doesn't need tees. 🤪
The strata golf set on Amazon was good for me when I got back in the game 5 years ago. Got a whole set for under $300 , if you have time you can find some bargains at second hand sports stores or flea markets. I found a Callaway Big Bertha driver there. Still use it to this day although I upgraded my irons to a Yonex set.
Second this as a former Strata owner. Would also check Costco for the Callaway set if you are a member or know someone who is.
Will do, thank you so much!
I got a full 14 club set at a yard sale with a stand bag for $40 when I started, I’m still using them.
Mostly. I did get a pretty sweet used driver lately cause I felt I was ready for it
Thanks Nathan!
All depends on your budget, but if your legit just learning how to swing a swing, getting one of the beginner sets as others mentioned isn’t the worst idea. there are lots of reviews on YouTube and some are surprisingly good, likely rebranded/repainted legit models from the major OEMs from years ago. Sure they won’t compare to the consistency and maybe even straight performance you’d get from a major OEM or even the DTC brands, but at this point that doesn’t really matter, you have a wide range of clubs at different lengths to learn all the nuances of a golf swing. The only caveat I’d have here is if you have some really weird body type that puts you into needing shorter or longer clubs, there are plenty of charts like this one that a lot of manufacturers kind of use as a good rule of thumb for what you might need, but even if you fall into like needing up to +/- 0.5” you’re probably fine, what I more mean is if you have a really non standard wrist to floor measurement with height and need something like +1.5” then you might want to look around for beginner sets that have the option to special order more or less length.
From there look into replacing single clubs like your putter, wedges, and then driver/woods when you have a consistent enough swing to where you’re comfortable going out to actually play, plenty of used stuff that’s perfectly good, but the beginner irons will probably be fine for this first phase of learning and won’t break the bank. If you want something a little nicer though and have the budget the direct to consumer brands have really excellent offerings that is just as good as the major OEMs that can run $200+ per individual iron in some cases. New level, Sun 70, Haywood, and Ben Hogan all have great high quality products that won’t break the bank and I think have some good free fitting resources too.
Awesome. Thank you Ed for the detailed advice! True gentleman and scholar.
Hi! Started my journey about two months ago. Wanna get my own clubs! What do you model and brands do guys suggest for beginners?
For men
Thank you!
As a beginner, don't bother getting fitted until you get 5+ lessons and have played a few rounds. You need a repeatable driver, iron and wedge swing before a fitter can help you.

Hi, sent you a DM!
It depends how much are you willing to spend, If money is no object get the current models any brand that has fitting in house.
Started less than a year ago.
My first set was a second hand set with a Driver, 5 wood, 11 wood, 2 rescue, 3 to P-A-S irons and a putter which i got for 15k. It's a good learner's / beginner's set. Then I was able to add a 7 wood to it for around 1.2k. They were probably 15 years old or more, as I don't see documentation of those equipment online anymore.
When I decided this year to take it seriously (but still as a recreational activity), that's where the costs added up. I got me a set with a 5 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 hybrid, 5-P irons, 52 56 and 60 wedges, and a putter, all brand new + a second hand driver which i'm planning to replace soon.
Things I wish I knew sooner:
A decent learner's set would be in the 15-20k in the used market (in my opinion). If you want to take the game seriously, you'll find soon enough that you want to be buying the good ones and these will cost you more, whether bnew or used. Benta mo na lang yung luma once you outgrow them.
Things to consider in a learner's set:
best golf clubs for beginners
Key Considerations for Beginners:
Club Type: Beginners should consider a complete set that includes a driver, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, a putter, and a bag. This ensures you have all the necessary clubs to cover various situations on the course.
Forgiveness: Look for clubs with a larger sweet spot and more forgiving designs. Game improvement clubs are typically designed to help beginners hit straighter and higher shots.
Shaft Flexibility: Choose clubs with a more flexible shaft (regular or senior flex) to help with distance and accuracy, especially if you have a slower swing speed.
Weight: Lighter clubs can be easier to swing for beginners, helping to develop a smoother swing and better control.
Price: As a beginner, it’s wise to invest in a mid-range set rather than high-end clubs. This allows you to learn without a significant financial commitment.
Recommendations:
Callaway Strata Complete Set: This set is highly recommended for beginners due to its forgiving design, quality construction, and comprehensive range of clubs. It typically includes a driver, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, and a putter.
Wilson Profile SGI Set: Another great option, this set is designed specifically for beginners and offers a good balance of performance and affordability. It features oversized clubs for better forgiveness.
TaylorMade SIM2 Max OS Irons: If you're looking to invest in individual clubs, these irons are known for their forgiveness and distance, making them suitable for beginners who want to improve their game.
Starting with a good set of clubs can significantly enhance your learning experience and enjoyment of the game.
