TL;DR
Soulsborne Series
The "Soulsborne" series, which includes Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, is frequently mentioned as some of the hardest yet most rewarding games available on PS4. These games are known for their punishing difficulty, requiring players to master combat mechanics and timing [1:3]
[2:4]
[3:5]. Sekiro stands out for its unique parrying system, which can make the game feel easier once mastered but initially presents a steep learning curve
[2:5].
Indie Titles
Indie games like Hollow Knight and Cuphead also offer significant challenges. Hollow Knight is praised for its intricate combat and exploration, while Cuphead is notorious for its difficult boss fights and platforming sections [3:7]
[5:1]. These games combine artistic design with tough gameplay, providing a satisfying experience for those who enjoy overcoming obstacles.
Action and Adventure Games
For fans of action and adventure, Devil May Cry 5 and Nioh series are recommended for their intense combat and high difficulty levels. Both require precise execution and strategy, especially on higher difficulties [2:4]
[3:11]. Nioh 2 is particularly noted for its complexity and depth in mechanics, making it a favorite among players seeking a challenge
[3:1].
Platformers and Unique Challenges
Games like Crash Bandicoot and Knack provide platforming challenges that can be surprisingly difficult when played on the hardest settings [1:2]
[2:10]. While these may not have the same reputation for difficulty as the Souls series, they still offer a formidable test of skill and patience.
Recommendations Beyond Discussions
If you enjoy challenging games, consider looking into titles that offer modular difficulty settings, such as SMT IV:A and Persona 4, which allow customization of difficulty to suit your preference [4:2]. Additionally, exploring lesser-known titles like Nine Sols could provide new and exciting challenges
[5:1].
I find myself enjoying a game more when it challenges me so I'm looking to buy a few new games that are known to be very difficult.
Some of the hardest and most enjoyable games I've played recently have been God of War and Wolfenstein II both on the hardest difficulty.
Let me know the most difficult games you have played. Can be anything from an indie game to a AAA!
THAT level in Crash Bandicoot...
Dark Souls 3
Bloodborne
super meat boy
I'd say the hardest games i've played were on ps2/ps3 like killzone 2 on the hardest mode.
On ps4- The last of us on grounded mode Bloodborne Witcher 3 on deathmarch: white orchard- (just finished Bloodborne and had a hard time getting into the combat)
Can anyone recommend some of the hardest ps4 games (Difficult and satisfying to beat, not just obnoxiously hard) that you’ve ever played?
Sekiro
I'm gonna couple this comment by recommending Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3.
Dark Souls 3’s difficulty didn’t feel satisfying to me. With all the infinite stamina guys, roll tracking, etc. I gave up in Irithyll after one of the tall, thin guys attacked me non-stop for like an hour.
It didn’t feel like real Dark Souls to me. Felt more like the horse shit they put in the Dark Souls 2 DLC to fuck with you. Like Blue Smelter’s hit boxes and the shoulder lava guys.
Dark Souls Remastered is probably the best recommendation.
Holy fuck yes, I'm actually getting buyers remorse from this game, I'm stuck at Genichiro
Genichiro is pretty much a barrier of entry in my opinion. Really makes you learn the mechanics of the game but once you beat him it kinda clicks imo. At least that was the case for me. I had trouble with the easiest enemies somehow but after beating Genichiro after like 100 deaths to him I died like 5 times in the next 15 hours.
Getting into the rhythm of parrying and attacking makes the game almost too easy unfortunately. It was pretty cool to be strong and beat almost all of the bosses first try but it made me miss the difficulty of other games.
Sorry for the wall of text but I kinda felt like sharing my opinion on Sekiro's difficulty. This is all just my opinion so maybe others actually found the game to be difficult.
Sekiro at least feels possible.
Some of the others below, on their max difficulties, are nuts.
Nioh
Sekiro
Bloodborne
Kingdom hearts 2 on critical difficulty
The devil may cry series on the hardest difficulty (you do have to play through all of the other difficulties to unlock it though.
Any Uncharted game on Brutal Crushing.
Edit: Fair point, u/CoolFiverIsABabe
Bloodborne, Sekiro , Devil May Cry 5, Valfaris, Strider, Sundered, Nex Machina, Ruiner, Enter the Gungeon, Hollow Knight, Nioh , Dead Cells
The hardest game I've ever played was God of War's GMGoW.
Not quite sure what the hardest game of all time is but I will do anything to beat it at its hardest form.
Cuphead for me. That game broke me
Played this one on Switch and was expecting it to be difficult, I managed ok.
Found Hades harder (also played on Switch) and about to start again on PS5 for the platinum.
Everyone will say the Souls series, but I think a game like Cuphead is more difficult
Souls really aren’t that hard. They’re pattern recognition and timing. I think a bullet hell is much more apt. Something like enter the Gungeon is way harder.
Very different games, would depend on the individual. I personally found Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro all to be difficult but fair after the inital learning curves, platinumed a couple of them. But man I could just not improve at Gungeon, probably put 150-200 hoirs in between Switch and PS4, only managed to kill the dragun once, never managed to erase a past or kill the lich, not even remotely close... I'm sure theres people with the opposite experiences.
Souls games just don't have an easy mode(maybe playing coop is the easy mode) but I think a lot of titles are harder when you crank up their difficulty to the max. Uncharted for example.
Dark souls is a game locked to hard mode, it doesn't have an easy mode but it doesn't have an extreme mode either. Sekiro is very hard though, definitely harder than the souls games.
In Sekiro at least I think there is a way to make the game way more difficult but you have to go through quite a bit of it to get there.
The original Uncharted’s crushing mode was perfect and fair and fun. Subsequent entries’ endgame are just complete luck as far as I’m concerned. Especially 3
Sekiro. Aeterna Noctis is supposed to come out on PS4 soon, it's only on new gen consoles and PC for now
Nioh, Nioh 2, Sekiro, Ninja Gaiden Master Collection
nioh 2 is hard af until you understand the mechanics. Gotta be my favourite game.
Hollow Knight 5th pantheon in Godhome
Currently playing through SMT IV:A and having a blast, right from the getgo it feels like something special that I have to struggle through on War difficulty. I'm not the best at SMT but I try to get by with relatively few battles, making it even moreso a struggle. SMT IV had some of the most satisfying [ bosses ](#s Pluto as well as the neutral path bosses) I've seen in years. I also fondly remember finding the original Persona 4 to be a great experience in that regard.
I haven't played SMT V yet, but IV and Apocalypse have to be up on my list so far. Which games feel the most satisfying to progress in or have the most engaging bosses for you?
I like the "Modular" difficulty on P4G's "Very Hard." I wish that Atlus would apply that "Modular" difficulty to their SMT games (toggling xp, and Macca % returns.) Maybe they don't do that because of achievements/trophies?
Strange Journey is it.
The rest is in the easy category, but Vengeance's endgame bosses are worth the trip.
I played 3-5. SMTV on Hard was fun, probably the most creative I've gotten. SMT3 on Normal is way too easy, so don't play it on Normal unless you wanna chill
I'd say Nocturne's normal difficulty is perfect for a first run, but for replays hard mode's combat modifiers are much more satisfying. Still, hard mode tripling shop prices makes me hesitate recommending to anyone who isn't willing to put in the huge time sink grinding for Magatamas at least
IV A on Conflict was the sweet spot for me.
DS Strange Journey, Digital Devil Saga 2, and OG Persona 5 on hard, for me.
With strange journey being the winner, loved it to bits. In general, Id even recommend it over the remake, I like it's progression, the app equip system that the remake ditched, and I personally prefer the simpler story of the og. without the extra dungeon that sorta messes with the difficulty curve.
And it's interesting, SMT IV I didn't like at all when it comes to difficulty it's front loaded as all hell, but every boss went down in two tries max, and most of them didn't really stick out in my memory, everything after Medusa feels like a blur.
(I didn’t attach the platinum screenshot because it was a black screen)
This game was a masterpiece and the final boss was the hardest fight I think I’ve ever done before. Highly recommend this game to anyone that enjoys difficult games, it’s phenomenal. Trophy wise the hardest one was literally just beating the game imo. 9/10 game and a 10/10 trophy list.
This game has 36 trophies: 15 bronze, 17 silver, 3 gold, and a platinum.
I don't know its difficulty or completion time. If you know this information, please reply to me so that I can add it to the PlatPrices.com database that this information is pulled from.

I've heard of this game, it's been on my radar for awhile now. Certainly looks fun, congrats on the plat! If you enjoy games with challenging combat, I'd recommend looking into Furi and maybe playing Hollow Knight. Not sure if Nine Sols is a metroidvania-type game, but if it is, then you'll probably enjoy Hollow Knight.
Hollow knight is my favorite game! Furi looks interesting, thank you!
Well done! I’ve never heard of this game but I might have to give it a try. The style looks cool.
Which game out of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Bloodborne, Dark Souls II or Dark Souls III would you guys say would be the hardest and required the most skill in a PS game?
What about other difficult games though?
For some people there are only the souls games lol
For most games you get to at least chose the difficulty. Most games could be really challenging at the highest difficulty, but it’s a common theme in the souls games where you could be fighting a boss for hours.
I hate how ppl think you beat one souls game you beat them all when if you play elden ring than go to siekro they are completely different siekro you have to be able to perfect parry and elden ring you can go the whole game without doing 1 parry there's also no attributes you can scale no magic they are both very challenging in entirely dif ways I will say I'm new to souls game I never played 1 or wanted to my whole life I just liked games like God of war uncharted watch dogs spiderman and was curious one day and I will say these games are leagues ahead of other even wolfinstien feels easy compared to these games I love the fact they push you to actually get good look at things in very creative ways to get past you can't just mash buttons but you have to know what your doing and really think carefully about it but some games are similar and so e are very dif I think it's crazy when ppl talk about the hardest games made you see things listed like puzzle games and Zelda ect from software has got to be the hardest games made in a sense of real console games you can play chess or puzzle games on a computer or a phone it's hard to consider them video games yo me esp with simulation games out there they are all kinda in the same category I believe souls games have bring a very difficult but enjoyable format and me personally have never been so challenged by games before without getting mad I remember when I first started playing Elder ring and I died all the time I would just laugh at how f****** crazy it was because of how difficult it was it was just insane to me and didn't even seem real then I actually got really good after hours and hours and hours of not giving up never had a game push me like that before and it's cool to actually get good at these games it feels like it's stimulates different parts of your brain as far as using patterns and creativity they should definitely be at the top of the hardest but most enjoyable games ever made and that's from someone that has always hated Soul games until like 3 months ago
Personally it would have to be Seiko as it's the only one I couldn't finish. The final boss just needed more reflexes than I have and doesn't really allow for you to try it in your own way like the other souls style games.
Would you say it was still worth it even though you couldn’t finish the final boss? Was the rest my f the game manageable like other souls games?
Actually yes, I still think it's an excellent game. There is a big boss shaped hurdle in the middle the was very hard for me but very satisfying to beat. Other than that it was a similar progression from "this is impossible" to "ah I get it now" that makes the other souls games great.
Same. I just ran out of patience after about a good couple of hours of retrying.
If you can beat one SoulsBorne you can beat any of them.
chaterine full body. the platinum its extremely hard
Now that Devil May Cry 5 is out and has an insane task to acquire the platinum trophy, because of one specific trophy. You have to clear all missions with S rank on all difficulties (except Heaven or Hell). This is near impossible because of Hell On Hell mode. Players die in one hit, and are given 3 lives. However, enemies do not die in one attack. It's the hardest difficulty in the series.

So what are some other PS4 games that are insanely hard to platinum
No last of us isnt considered hard. Maybe tedious but nor hard
So pretty much don't die and finish the game in one run. Geez, that's insane.
And the game is ridiculously unbalanced on console. So many cheap deaths. The story rules though, and it’s really fun on the easier difficulties.
Star ocean the last hope ultimate battler is ridiculous get all 900 battle trophies at first it might sound easy it's not
Ok time to list some characters have kill the ethereal queen in a time limit this is ridiculous the hardest boss in the game that is at the end of a 6 to 7 hour dungeon with no check points so if you leave the bosses fricking respawn before you get to her
Now if that wasn't bad enough for you they want you to kill her on every difficulty
Now if your fine with that they want you to reduce an enemies hp to 1 to 2 yes exact numbers
If that wasn't bad enough every character has kill 999 of a certain type of enemy thing is you have to control that char and land the finishing blow
Now if that wasn't bad enough they want exact damage numbers like 111 1111 11111
Now if that wasn't bad enough they want you to get paralyzed 99 times frozen 99 times and you to have an ally remove these status effects
Also you need to defeat an enemy in exactly 3 minutes
Now wre going to into another ridiculous Luck based trophy survive via fury 15 times in a row what this means is randomly you can survive a hit that kills you now you need this to happen 15 times
There's even more ridiculous battle trophies but the synthesize every item in the game is ridiculous because you need to do it on 1 playthrough
Remember that boss I told you about thats at the end of this 7 hour dungeon well you need about 7 of her drops and she only drops 1 per time you kill her
Edit battle trophies are ingame achievements for each character each character has 100 individual achievements
On the hardest difficulty as well, where like 2-3 bullets will kill you.
Last of us is easy just takes a bit becuase of multiplayer
I've put away AC Black Flag, Tomb Raider and Metal Gear V for this exact reason. Anyone done these multiplayer ones? I hate the idea of boosting and grinding them without the intended challenge.
Competition is nothing like it was. All the good people and guilds quit because there was no challenge. My guild was the number one PS4 guild for years. I think I had over 100 million AP across the different factions.
Yes, that’s hard. But if you can get into a good, coordinated guild, it’s not THAT hard.
(The fishing trophy is much more challenging/tedious.)
The NBA 2k games are nearly impossible to platinum. It's a ridiculous amount of grind. I remember reading that you would need over 3000 hours to platinum 2k19, and that's if rng favored you.
Super Meat Boy is generally considered the hardest if not one of the hardest to platinum
I literally just beat the game.. I started on the second highest difficulty, and by the end had to lower it to easiest. I was still getting my ass handed to me!
A lot of games seem to play the same game that is only more difficult because enemies become sponges. What is a good game that is difficult to really master, or has no one way to beat it?
Can be any genre.
Dark Souls 1, 2 ,3, Bloodborne, Demon's Souls, Sekiro.
My work here is done. The man said technically difficult. FromSoft is the treasure trove.
Nioh fits with these, too.
Furi and Enter the Gungeon
Furi was a hell of a good time
Sekiro
Devil May Cry on harder difficulties, DMC1 and 3 are also pretty tough on standard difficulty.
After playing LN2 last year I knew I had to come for this one, especially ahead of the release of LN3.
Fantastic game, full of atmosphere, and hard to the core is a worthy challenge. Not to easy, not too hard. Managed it on attempt #5 after one failure on the final boss, one fall off a pipe in chapter 4 and two on the damn chefs (pro tip, when on the final box trying to find a hook to grab go back instead of chasing the hook ahead of you, a lot more consistent). Ironically the areas I had no trouble on in the main run were all easy in the speedrun and vice versa, in the speedrun I died in areas I passed with no issue in the main run.
My only criticism is that the controls can feel a bit tricky. There are no control mapping options and the camera can sometimes make judging position a bit tricky. But overall easy to handle when you have practice.
Highly recommended.
Nicely done! 🙌
This game has 13 trophies: 10 bronze, 2 silver, 1 gold, but no platinum.

Guys, I need a game recommendation. As > 1k hours MHW player, who literally never plays other game this year, i seek a game that as hard as MHW and of course its Iceborne expansion.
Currently I have Nioh, Nier, Sekiro. Which one is hardest? Is it Sekiro?
I welcome any other game title too. Thanks in advance!
God of War. I died so many times at the beginning of the game more than in any Souls-game. It was still hard as hell even when I got better armor and unlocked some powerful attacks but I don't regret finishing that game on the hardest mode.
Agree, I played GOW but did not satisfy at beginning, going to re play the game again.
You ever thought about Devil May Cry 5?
That series is all about unlocking increasingly hard difficulties until you die in one hit. On top of that you can try to SSS everything and the 100 level dungeon.
Sorry but DMC is never in my list ever since 1st game hahaha don't know why I just don't really like the game
That's fair, different strokes, hope you find what you are looking for!
Having played all three. Nioh is hardest and more rewarding. Have fun
I hard to believe Nioh is harder than Sekiro. Thanks!
Sekiro
Tons of soulsbourne hours under my belt. Sekiro is in my opinion the most difficult, but it is very methodical. It is definitely more difficult than MHW. Many, many players simply cannot complete the game. The final boss in sekiro is probably the most challenging encounter I’ve ever faced in a video game.
It’s gorgeous though, has rich lore, and some of the most satisfying and fluid combat mechanically ever in a game. Very cool game if you’re up to the challenge.
I also really enjoyed nioh but it is not near sekiro level of difficulty at all. Nioh has “artificial difficulty,” where your gear and item choice often allow you to brute force your way through encounters. It does have some true challenges like the double and triple boss fights (2 and 3v1), and a lot of endurance style battles. Both are very hard and very frustrating. But with some stupid OP one shot spirit builds you can face roll your way through the game
Also bloodborne is still a phenomenal choice. It is absolutely not too late to play that game or dark souls 3! They both have very good graphics and gameplay.
best hardest game on Ps4
Key Considerations for the Hardest PS4 Games:
Difficulty Level: Look for games that are known for their challenging mechanics, requiring precise timing and skill.
Game Mechanics: Consider games that have complex systems, such as intricate combat or puzzle-solving elements, which can increase difficulty.
Player Skill Requirement: Games that demand a high level of player skill, including reflexes and strategic thinking, are often considered harder.
Community Consensus: Check reviews and community feedback to see which games are frequently mentioned as being particularly tough.
Top Recommendations:
Dark Souls III: Known for its punishing difficulty, this action RPG requires players to master combat mechanics and learn enemy patterns. The game rewards patience and skill.
Bloodborne: Similar to Dark Souls but with faster-paced combat, Bloodborne challenges players with its aggressive enemies and intricate level design.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: This game emphasizes precise timing and skillful parrying, making it one of the toughest titles on the PS4. The combat system is unforgiving but rewarding.
Nioh 2: Combining elements of Dark Souls and a rich loot system, Nioh 2 offers challenging combat and deep customization, making it a tough but engaging experience.
Cuphead: While it has a charming art style, Cuphead is notorious for its difficult boss battles and platforming challenges, requiring quick reflexes and memorization.
Takeaway: If you're looking for a true challenge, consider starting with Dark Souls III or Bloodborne for their rich lore and gameplay depth. For a unique experience, try Cuphead for its artistic style and intense difficulty.
