Best Historical Anime Series

Vinland Saga

Vinland Saga is frequently recommended across discussions as a top historical anime. It focuses on the Viking era and includes characters based on real historical figures [1:3][2:2][3:1]. The series is praised for its engaging storytelling and historical context, making it a great choice for those interested in this period.

Kingdom

Kingdom is another highly recommended series that depicts the Warring States period of China [1:5][2:1][3:1]. It provides a detailed look at the political and military struggles during this time, with many characters based on historical figures. Some users even suggest reading the manga for an enriched experience [3:1].

The Rose of Versailles

Set during the French Revolution, The Rose of Versailles explores themes of nobility and hierarchy [1:4][5:4]. This anime is noted for its dramatic portrayal of historical events and its focus on the lives of both royalty and commoners during a tumultuous period in history.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

This series offers a unique perspective on Japanese history through the lens of rakugo, a form of Japanese verbal entertainment [4:1][5:1]. It spans several decades, providing insight into cultural changes in Japan. It's recommended for viewers interested in both historical narratives and traditional Japanese art forms.

Dororo

Dororo is set in a fictionalized version of Japan's Sengoku period and follows a young orphan and a ronin on their journey to reclaim what was lost [1:1][4:3]. The series combines historical elements with supernatural themes, offering a blend of action and drama.

Additional Recommendations

Other notable mentions include Samurai Champloo, which mixes Edo-period Japan with modern influences like hip-hop [1:1], and Golden Kamuy, which takes place post-Russo-Japanese War [3:4][5:1]. For those interested in films, Grave of the Fireflies and In This Corner of the World provide poignant depictions of civilian life during WWII [2:4][5:1].

  • dororo - kinda slow in the beginning but the second half was so worth pushing through. Loved this to the end.
  • baccano- takes place in 1930s chicago/nyc and story does revolve around a noble family + mafia
  • yona of the dawn- for an easier and fun watch. Includes historical time period and nobility
  • samurai champloo- takes place in edo period and implements break dancing fight styles with old school hiphop

Is there any anime that presents historic aspects?

Posted by KDD_Adrian · in r/anime · 8 months ago

I'm looking to find an anime for my father to watch. He told me he likes shows that talk about history and present accurate aspects of history. I was initially thinking of Golden Kamuy, but there's little history in it. Do you have any suggestions?

Orb on The Movements of Earth. It's historic fiction and revolves around a few historic themes, though not everything is really based on historic events, but it's genuinely a masterpiece of an anime.

Hello guys, I enjoy watching historical anime series but cannot find enough. I've only watched Beyond the Heavens and Kingdom in that genre.

I would be very appreciated if you can suggest me some of them ❤️ Which ones are your favourite?

Golden Kamuy is set at the end of the russo-Japanese war (1905) and relate some fictionnal events in Hokkaido-Karafuto/Sakhaline before WWI

As quoted by others Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and Vinland Saga are also really really good.

For movies I would recommend In This Corner of the World which relate the life of japanese civilians during WWII. Grave of the fireflies, The wind rises and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya are also very good.

I would like to also recommend a manga that is worth the read : Vagabond relate the life of Miyamoto Musashi.

Vinland saga( about Vikings but not exactly historical)

19 upvotes on reddit
Z3rogravityxx · 3 years ago

It’s based off one of the first Danish epics so it’s kinda historical in that way.

It's partially historical in that Cnut the Great and Thorfinn were real people. If you read about Thorfinn you'll pretty much get an idea about how the story's gonna end.

What are some good animes in a historical setting?

Posted by Killastorm83 · in r/anime · 4 years ago

I just finished watching Golden Kamuy and I loved it. It follows a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war and its constantly talking about some political and social context, giving a glimpse into the post war Japan. It algo dives into the Ainu traditions and history, that are not usually explored.

So now, I'm looking for an anime that is similar to golden Kamuy. While it can have some embellishment and the plot itself doesn't need to be 100% real, I do want it to have a realistic setting and be able to learn about any period in time, no matter if its in Japan or anywhere else.

And if you're ok with some supernatural aspect, I also recommend Baccano!

best historical anime series

Key Considerations for Historical Anime Series:

  1. Historical Accuracy: Some series take creative liberties, while others strive for authenticity. Decide how important historical accuracy is to you.

  2. Storytelling and Character Development: Look for series with engaging plots and well-developed characters that bring history to life.

  3. Art Style and Animation Quality: The visual presentation can enhance the storytelling experience. Consider the art style that appeals to you.

  4. Cultural Representation: Some series may focus on specific cultures or events, providing insight into different historical perspectives.

  5. Genre Blending: Many historical anime blend genres (e.g., action, romance, drama), which can add depth to the narrative.

Recommendations:

  1. "Vinland Saga" - Set in the Viking era, it combines historical events with a compelling coming-of-age story. The animation is top-notch, and it explores themes of revenge and redemption.

  2. "Attack on Titan" - While it has fantasy elements, it draws heavily from historical themes and military strategy, making it a unique blend of genres.

  3. "Mushishi" - This series is set in a historical Japan and focuses on folklore and the relationship between humans and nature, offering a serene and reflective experience.

  4. "Hyouge Mono" - A lesser-known gem that delves into the world of tea ceremonies during Japan's Sengoku period, focusing on aesthetics and philosophy.

  5. "The Heroic Legend of Arslan" - Based on a novel, this series is set in a fictionalized version of ancient Persia and follows the young prince Arslan as he fights to reclaim his kingdom.
