What Redditors are Saying

Best Hybrid Wheels for Skateboards

TL;DR

  • Moxi Fundae wheels are popular for hybrid use but may not suit rough surfaces [1:2][1:3].
  • Powell G Slides and Dragon Formula wheels are recommended for smooth rides and versatility [2:2][2:3].
  • Radar Energy and Roll Line Helium wheels are favored for their performance on various surfaces [5:1][5:2].

Popular Hybrid Wheel Options

Moxi Fundae wheels are frequently mentioned as a good option for hybrid skating, offering a balance between indoor and outdoor performance. However, they may not perform well on very rough asphalt [1:3]. Another popular choice is the Powell G Slides, which provide a smooth ride and excellent sliding capability, although they might wear faster than other options [2:2].

Versatile Performance

For those seeking versatile performance across different terrains, Dragon Formula wheels have received positive feedback for their durability and all-around capabilities [2:3]. Similarly, Roll Line Helium wheels are praised for their ability to handle various surfaces due to their 83A durometer and hard plastic hub, making them fast and maneuverable [5:2].

Considerations for Specific Activities

When selecting hybrid wheels, consider your specific activities and preferences. For example, if you plan to skate in parks or experiment with ramps, wheels like Luminous or Atom Poisons might be suitable due to their balance of softness and hardness [3:2][5:4]. If you're interested in dance or spins, Radar Crush wheels could be an option, though they are shorter and thinner, which might affect stability [5:5].

Personal Preferences and Recommendations

Ultimately, the choice of hybrid wheels depends on personal preferences and intended use. Some users prefer smaller wheels for tricks and grinding, while others opt for larger, softer wheels for cruising and comfort [3:1][4:8]. It's recommended to try different options and see what feels best for your style of skating.

Hey everyone, I was wondering what the best hybrid wheels are? Obviously the answer to this question is totally subjective & depends on the person, but in general what is the most bought hybrid wheel?

I’ve heard really great things about the Moxi fundae wheels!

I have the moxi fundaes. They are great indoors and nice on smoothish sidewalks. However, the roads around me are a pretty bumpy asphalt and the fundaes didn't feel great on them. They don't feel bad on smoother asphalt though so if the roads around you are smoother, I would definitely recommend the fundaes.

Which are your favourite hybrid wheels? I'm on 56mm 92a ricta chrome clouds and would like to try more wheels around this duro because they are fun to skate on all terrain. Currently looking at dragon formula, bones x formula, oj keyframes, mini logo 90a. Would love to hear which hybrids you like!

I ride 56mm Powell G Slides. They slide better than Dragons and roll smoother. I have both. They probably wear faster and flat spot easier as well but I enjoy them enough to replace a little earlier. If you want long lasting all around good go Dragons. If a smooth ride and icy slide is your goal and you like 56mm its G Slides and I don’t think it close at all. The ONLY issue I can see is they slide so well and so silently you will probably slide more and eventually flat spot and blame the person who suggested them. I give you that disclaimer. In theory Dragons probably last longer

Thanks for sharing this! Forgot about the G Slides, I'd been recommended those before. All these hybrid wheels seem to be quality, just about the fine margins of preference, as you say.

If you have a nice skate park with lots of transition near you, I highly recommend trying the 92a chrome/cored clouds (same thing apart from metallic vs matte finish on the plastic cores), cause they keep speed like a rock hard wheel. Fun to use on ramps and in bowls for the mix of a smooth and grippier ride without the sluggish feeling that normally comes with softer wheels. They can still slide but they're on the grippier side. I find them to be as fast as my bones STFs, they're probably faster. I suspect this is due to the big plastic core.

Currently the mini logo 90a 56mm is next up for me to try, then the g slides, then the dragons (which would be first priority if they were out long enough to already be on discount sales!)

Nice to see somebody else who's enjoying hybrids at the minute! Happy skating!!!

Good Hybrid Wheels?

Hi! I was just wondering what are some good hybrid wheels other than the Moxi Fundae wheels? Soft enough to have a pretty smooth ride outdoors but also hard enough to maybe ride down ramps when it comes time to start experimenting in the skate park. Would you say the Luminous wheels count as hybrid wheels?

I had the same question and went with Rivas; they are somewhat similar to Fundaes and cheap. However, if you are just starting out, I’d get something more on the outdoor side (slightly bigger like 60mm and softer, maybe a durometer in the high eighties) since they’re easier to learn on and can still be used at the park. You really only need the smaller wheels if you’re going to be grinding (from what I understand), and once you get to that point you might be ready to make other upgrades too. Small wheels are slower and get caught on dumb little cracks and stuff :(

Ultimate Cruiser Hybrid setup that can ollie?

Posted by jags8228 · in r/NewSkaters · 4 months ago
post image

Hey guys,

Trying to get back into skateboarding in my early 30s and I'm wanting to build the ultimate cruiser hybrid set up that can still Ollie and maybe throw a shuv or a kickflip in there. This was my set up from 12 years ago. I believe it has high independent trucks roughly 8.5 inches wide, reds bearings (will be replaced), some 65mm 78aa wheels, and a blank shop 8.5 inch deck.

I built this off pieces I found on Craigslist at the time and now I'm in a financial position where I can throw as much money at a set up as I'd like. I have a Land Yachts longboard and a Onewheel for real commuting around town. I'm looking for something that I can easily push around the neighborhood but still continue to progress on my ollies and pop shuvs. Give me your best advice for a set up. Do I keep this and just replace the bearings? Switch to dragon wheels?

Any advice is appreciated.

This doesn’t look to bad. Maybe change the bushings and bearing if needed and your good to go.

I had a landyachts dingy cruiser for quite some time and loved it. But it pissed me off that I had no real nose and often fucked up ollies up a curb because I was so used to having a nose on my other board. Then I bought a normal 8.5 deck and replaced it. It’s super nice but hard to throw some tricks.

A few months ago I bought a pair of dragons 93a for my normal skateboard and since then I never really touched my cruiser again. It’s not the same but it’s so nice to being able to powerslide and have fun while cruising with what I’m used to.

If you don’t skate perfect smooth skateparks all the time I would get a kinda standard setup with some bigger dragon wheels. Maybe even the 88a version. It’s the perfect combination of both worlds.

And if you go somewhere super crusty you can still take the cruiser you already have.

Yeah I was debating getting an 8.25 deck, some titanium independent trucks regular height, and some dragon wheels.

There's also a very intriguing Dogtown 8.5 double kicktail with titanium independent trucks on it on Facebook marketplace near me.

Landyachts decks have terrible pop, like straight out of the factory they feel mushy and do not inspire confidence. A classic shape peralta deck (corny as it is) would be infinitely better for a hybrid type setup. You lose zero rideability and it’s actually designed for skating

Could I ask why you suggest changing the bushings? Just cause they're old? I don't see anything wrong with the stock indy bushings.

I've been riding a 8in Arbor deck that has a bamboo top ply. It's still poppy after almost 10 years which I can only assume is because of that bamboo. Trucks are Aces as they're carvy but not weirdly so. Wheels are 62mm 90a Hawgs. Bearings are Swiss because disposable income.

I love this setup and would recreate it instantly if my board disappeared. Maybe with Ace hollows.

Damn, can you ride / do tricks fine without risers? I also ride indys and I recently got 1/8 risers when I stepped up to softer 56mm for my hybrid board and I really don't like how high it is now. It looks like I'd have enough clearance while turning without risers, but with that setup even my hard 53mm left marks on the deck. Never actually felt anything tough, so I'm still on the fence. I honestly should be fine with how high indys are but I don't know how to find out if I'll get wheelbite in extreme cases without eating shit at least once.

I don't notice any wheel bite with the Indy highs. I'm considering getting sightly smaller wheels and lower trucks as I don't like how high this set up is either

i mean, there are literal ''hybrid'' decks build for exactly this.

https://www.arborcollective.eu/collections/shakedown-series?srsltid=AfmBOooxuR4yr_BD7T2QvrN8Z843fWG-Cp8_3yGH9k-REg5I9xZ5CRaK&shpxid=404507d5-5cbd-4bea-b785-479110c115b4

have a look at these for example. those are basically small cruiser decks, that also have raised tail and nose and concave like regular streetdecks so you can do stuff in skateparks, ride pools, do some flips and whatnot.

What’s your favorite hybrid wheel?

Posted by Heyo-Mayo91 · in r/Rollerskating · 1 year ago

I’m an ex-derby skater who just sorta skates for fun now. I switch from indoor to outdoor a lot and hate changing my wheels, so I love hybrids. I’ve been using Poison Savant wheels for a year and a half now, and they’ve finally come to their end. I’m trying to find a new set of hybrids for just general skating, but I only know of good wheels for derby.

What are your favorite hybrid wheels? Any good recommendations? Thanks!

Roll line Helium! 83A makes it good for all surfaces, hard plastic hub makes it fast, and they're not very thick so they're also quite maneuverable. I absolutely love them and use them for all of my outdoor needs.

Luminous are also surprisingly good for what they are and I use them often indoors too.

Try the Radar Crush. They're built for dance. Shorter and thinner.

2 upvotes on reddit
visokeybomb · 1 year ago

Are you trying to learn dance stuff and/or do fun skating on your derby skates or have you switched to a heeled boot?

1 upvotes on reddit
Heyo-Mayo91 · OP · 1 year ago

I’m just skating for fun. I still use my flat derby boots because heeled boots make me super unstable.

2 upvotes on reddit
visokeybomb · 1 year ago

Ah okay, someone recommended the Crush wheels and they won’t work with most derby plates as the kingpin may scrape the ground. They are also meant for dance, and not really meant for long distance skating or anything too aggressive since they’re 48mm.

Depending on what type of skating you’re planning on doing, and your skill set, the Fundaes are a great go to, but I know the lack of edges can throw people off. They’re 92a and 57mm. I use mine for beach and street skating.

Haha that’s what I’m wondering as well. Like does radar villains have any noticeable difference compared to the poisons

3 upvotes on reddit

Probably not. The Poisons have maybe more of a lip? They're very similar wheels. If you want a noticable difference, you've got to find something with a different geometry.

the currents wheels i'm using are spitfire formula four 52mms. i forget the hardness, but they are definitely super hard and street skating in my shitty new england suburb is just miserable with them. riding is not smooth at all and it's over for me if i hit a pebble so i was thinking i could get some soft wheels. i was thinking ricta clouds 78a. is that a good choice?

My personal favorite are the Ricta Clouds 92A. They still feel soft enough to almost be 'cruisery', but you can still skate them like any other wheel when you want. I think any of the Clouds are great urethane, though, so the 78a you'd definitely be rolling smooth! The 80's would be a great compromise as well.

The new Spitfire 93a are pretty good as well, but definitely feel much harder than the Ricta 92a.

Also, I'm from Worcester, so I know exactly the type of pavement you're on :D It sucks almost always lol

haha totally! i was also thinking of the oj wheels 87a. do you go to orchard for skate stuff too or are there locals in worcester? the free shipping plus knowing i'm supporting a smallish brand is great. honestly i should go to that shop in franklin since it's much smaller and could probably use the help too.

The OJ keyframes are my cruiser wheel of choice. They're plenty soft that you don't need to worry about sidewalk cracks or the pebbles you can't see, but not too soft that you can't feel the ground under the board at all.

Love those rictas! They're decent in my local indoor park, it's a combination of concrete floor (not glassy smooth, it's like the smoothest painted sidewalk) and wood ramps.

Bigfoot wheels are super soft, and they're small, super fast for cruising, small enough for tricks. They might catch when doing a grind, though. I dont see them mentioned on this sub ever, and their about 20$ on amazon.

1 upvotes on reddit

well i can barely do a rocket ollie so i don't think catching while grinding is really a problem. are there any other online stores that sell bigfoots? i refuse to use amazon because of how they treat their workers, unless it's something i need and can only get there

Best hybrid wheels

I'm new to skating and have some primitive 52mm 99a wheels. They feel terrible on the street and are only somewhat serviceable in skateparks. I 'm wondering what the best wheels for overall street and skatepark skating would be for NYC sidewalks and streets. Im also curious if my wheels are just bad since they are stock with my board.

54mm dragons are a good wheel for both crusty streets and smooth parks.

1 upvotes on reddit
morninowl · 1 year ago

52mm 99a will definitely make you think twice before putting down your board on crusty streets. I will say though, that it's really hard to find a compromise between skateability and ride comfort. The best you can get right now are the Powell Dragon Formulas. They are 93a, but still slide better than some of the sticky 99a's in the market. They are obviously more sticky than something like spitfires, but it is very controllable and predictable once you get used to it.

The difficult part is how big you want to go. I think 55~56mm is where it starts getting really smooth and fast, and you won't even have to worry about manhole covers. But as the wheels get bigger, they also make the board heavier. I think it's up to you to try out stuff and find out if it is something you can handle, or if you want to just stick to the goldilocks 'skateboard setup' and deal with the crust a bit.

What are some good hybrid wheels?

Posted by [deleted] · in r/NewSkaters · 5 years ago

I recently started skating and bought a complete deck. The streets are not in too good condition where I live and the wheels of the complete are extremely loud and not comfortable to ride (they are 100a). I am looking for some wheels that I can ride on rough streets and still be able to do some tricks with. Right now I am thinking about buying the Ricta Clouds 86a (I would prefer 92 but can't find those anywhere). Are these wheels too soft for tricks and can you recommend any alternatives?

best hybrid wheels skateboard

Key Considerations for Hybrid Skateboard Wheels:

  1. Material: Look for wheels made from high-quality urethane for durability and a smooth ride. Urethane provides a good balance of grip and slide.

  2. Durometer (Hardness): A durometer rating between 78A to 87A is ideal for hybrid wheels. Softer wheels (78A-83A) offer better grip and shock absorption, while harder wheels (84A-87A) provide more speed and slide.

  3. Diameter: Wheel diameter typically ranges from 50mm to 60mm. Smaller wheels (50mm-54mm) are better for technical tricks, while larger wheels (55mm-60mm) are better for cruising and rough terrain.

  4. Shape: Consider the shape of the wheel. A wider wheel provides more stability, while a narrower wheel is better for tricks and technical riding.

  5. Versatility: Look for wheels that can handle both street and park riding, allowing you to switch between different styles easily.

Recommendations:

  • Bones STF Wheels: Known for their durability and performance, these wheels come in various sizes and durometers, making them suitable for hybrid use.

  • Spitfire Formula Four Wheels: These wheels are highly regarded for their grip and durability, available in multiple durometers and sizes to fit different riding styles.

  • Ricta Clouds Wheels: With a softer durometer (78A), these wheels are great for cruising and provide excellent shock absorption, making them ideal for hybrid setups.

Choosing the right hybrid wheels depends on your specific riding style and preferences, so consider trying out a few different options to see what feels best for you!
