Understanding Hypoallergenic Claims
It's important to note that "hypoallergenic" is an unregulated term in the makeup industry, meaning products labeled as such might not necessarily be safe for everyone with sensitive skin [2:1]. Therefore, identifying specific ingredients that cause reactions can be more effective than relying solely on hypoallergenic labels
[4:2].
Recommended Brands and Products
Several brands have been recommended across discussions for individuals with sensitive skin:
Clinique: Frequently mentioned as a reliable brand for hypoallergenic makeup, Clinique offers a range of fragrance-free products suitable for sensitive skin. It's widely available in stores, making it easy to test before purchasing [2:4]
[3:2]
[4:1].
Physicians Formula: Known for catering to sensitive skin, this brand claims hypoallergenic properties and has been positively reviewed by users with sensitivity issues [2:5].
Marcelle: A Canadian drugstore brand that markets itself as hypoallergenic and cruelty-free [2:2].
Tower 28 Beauty: Specifically formulated for eczema and other skin issues, Tower 28 Beauty is a newer brand worth exploring [1:3].
Almay: Another option for affordable hypoallergenic makeup, particularly praised for its fragrance-free formulations [4:1].
Avoiding Common Irritants
For those with sensitive skin, avoiding products with fragrance is crucial, as fragrances are common irritants. Additionally, steering clear of alcohols and oils can help prevent adverse reactions [3:2]
[3:3]. Always use a moisturizer under makeup to create a barrier and protect the skin
[3:2].
Special Considerations
Individuals with severe allergies, such as those allergic to aloe or coconut, should look into fragrance-free beauty communities for tailored advice [5:1]. For performance makeup, consider using primers from brands like Clinique or Glossier to minimize skin irritation
[4:4].
Consultation with Professionals
If allergic reactions persist despite trying various products, consulting a dermatologist for allergy patch testing can identify specific allergens and guide you towards suitable products [4:2].
I'd like to wear make-up sometimes but I've had very severe allergic reaction to some of it in the past and I don't know what brands might be safe or if there aren't really any good options.
For background/details:
I am a man, but between Halloween and wanting to dress in a more goth/punk style outside of work, I would really like to be able to wear eyeliner and lipstick especially (but I would also like suggestions for other kinds of make up like foundation, I don't really know the specifics as I've mostly worn eyeliner and lipstick aside from one point where I had my make-up done by a professional.)
The professional did put on eyeliner, and eye shadow and stuff but I really don't know what brands she used and that night was kind of a mess so I don't remember if I had any allergies to it or not.
I have worn eyeliner once but the allergic reaction basically destroyed my eyelids and didn't heal for a full six months so I really want to find a safe brand instead. The eyeliner was a very cheap brand, but I don't remember the exact name.
I am allergic to gluten as well, and I have a gluten free tinted chapstick, but it's more magenta than black or even dark blue or purple, so the dark pink doesn't really achieve the look I'm trying to get. The chapstick brand I use is Hurra! and I've found they're really good as chapstick, but they don't really have dark enough tints to work as black makeup.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions, please. Thank you in advance.

tower 28 beauty is kindof a newer brand that is for eczema and skin issues
Thank you, I'll look them up and see how their products go, hopefully they don't cause any problems.
I have to wear non-comedogenic makeup. I like to use this site to help me find such products.
Makeup makes me stuffy and itchy. I feel like it’s eyeshadow and eyeliner that really does me in. I have sensitive skin as well to foundation and powders. Does anyone know of any affordable hypoallergenic brands that are gentle?
Marcelle (Canadian, cruelty free, drugstore) claims to be hypoallergenic. I have used a few of their products but I personally don’t have sensitivity.
Hypoallergenic is an unregulated term in the makeup industry, so even products marketed as such might not work for you. It would be easier to find products if you know specific ingredients you’re allergic to?
Unfortunately I don’t know which specific ingredients are irritating me :(
I’ve been there, and it’s tough! First, if you seem to be reacting to everything, it could be that your skincare is causing the irritation, or you might have some type of skin condition that’s reacting to the makeup. Try getting your skincare in order if it isn’t already, and/or see a dermatologist if you’re having severe reactions, and makeup will be a lot easier to work with after!
I have really reactive skin, and I've had good luck with Clinique products. Since they're stocked at a lot of stores, it might be helpful to swatch some foundations to see if any will work for you.
Physicians formula says it is and I've had pretty good luck with it as a sensitive person
Just wondering, what are the hypo-allergenic makeup products I could use for someone who is suffering with sensitive skin?
My main advice would be avoid anything with fragrance.
For cleansers and moisturisers I’d strongly recommend Aveeno (their calm and restore range is great). And be sure to always use moisturiser under your makeup.
For actual makeup product, I think most big brands should be fairly good (again, avoiding fragrance). I can’t speak for most brands but I’ve had good experience with Clinique.
I have sensitive, acne-prone skin and avoid all fragrance (artificial and natural, which includes essential oils), alcohol (aka. ethyl alcohol, denatured alcohol or alcohol denat., isopropyl alcohol, and methyl alcohol/methanol), and all oils (avocado, jojoba, there are too many to name). I can’t even double-cleanse with an oil-based cleanser without breaking out, despite the fact that the second cleanser removes the oil from the first one.
Just as an FYI: some alcohols are fatty alcohols which are fine for sensitive skin: cetyl, stearyl, and cetearyl alcohols are 100% okay.
I refer to this list of chemical irritants all the time when looking for new skincare products: https://www.vanicream.com/about/chemical-irritants.
I hope this helps! 😊
There literally is a brand called Hypoallergenic (I think) that offers anything from foundation to nail polish. But I'm not sure if it's available where you're from
I thought of posting in a makeup sub but thinking it might be more helpful to post here since my question is specific to performance makeup.
For performance makeup, do any of you struggle with being allergic to usual makeup that people use for performances? If so, do you have recs for makeup? TIA
See a dermatologist for allergy patch testing.
"Hypoallergenic" means absolutely nothing. It's right up there with "all natural!" Coconut oil and lavender are all natural but watch my face puff up and my skin peel when I use them. Bare Minerals markers itself as hypo allergenic and I'm allergic to half the ingredients. Thrive Causemetics say they "the sensitive skin makeup". I can use none of their blush or foundation, one formulation lipstick, and a lip pencil.
Until you know what you react to, it's an expensive guessing game.
I've used regular makeup for performance for years, without problems. Greasepaint and the Ben Nye stage makeup is horrible for my skin and outside of really specific things that require more like "special effects" makeup, I stick to stuff I can get at Sephora and test everything for allergies before putting it in my kit.
What have you been using that you react to? Are you using a good primer and skincare to help your skin along? Do you wear any other makeup? Have you reacted to any products in the past? What kinds of reactions are you having -- are your eyes watering, is your skin breaking out, or are you getting hives?
Hi, not looking at the more professional stage makeup. It’s for a younger performer who wouldn’t wear makeup except for performances and due to their young age just wears eyeshadow, eyeliner, Blush and lipstick. Reaction is blotchy skin. Since they only use the makeup a few times of the year and just started doing performances, has been using drugstore makeup like nyx, elf, maybelline, revlon
I'd consider a primer for the eyeshadow and blush, Clinique or Glossier make good ones for sensitive skin, and maybe look at Neutrogena, Almay, Physician's Formula, or Burt's Bees at the drugstore, and at Clinique or Tarte at Sephora or Ulta. Mineral makeup can be good for sensitive skin, as it goes through fairly rigorous testing, but it can be tricky under stage lighting. Make sure they're washing their skin and moisturising properly before putting the makeup on and after taking it off, and that nothing is being on a shared applicator or has a shared pencil/marker tip to it -- eyeliner is a prime culprit here, don't ever share that. It can lead to eye infections.
Unfortunately, it's a lot of trial and error, but that's most makeup, really. Good luck with the youngling!
Clinique is probably the best for truly hypoallergenic makeup. If it’s too expensive then try Almay. Many reactions to cosmetics are a reaction to the fragrance used in them - so stick to unfragranced products.
Its not stage makeup- but clinque works for my sensitive skin
Thanks - will look into Clinique!
I use Haus Labs for my sensitive skin no issues at all. I know LA ballet uses MAC
a bit expensive but try RMS beauty
I have really really sensitive eyes, I mean they water if I think about them watering and my allergies are equally excessive. Because of this I haven't worn makeup in years.
What hypoallergenic fragrance/scent free eyeliners, mascara and any other face products would you suggest that is aloe and coconut free (strongly allergic to both) should I look into
Thank you in advance xoxo
Would highly recommend r/fragrancefreebeauty!
Are there any brands that are good and hypoallergenic?
She loves to wear makeup but recently her eye makeup seems to irritate her eyes and I told her i’d ask on here since i’m a frequent Redditor and everyone seems to have a good answer here!
Thanks!
Have you considered that she might have had an eye infection and it keeps being repress through bacteria in her make up and tools?
If she has new versions of the same stuff ready to replace old ones, suggest to her to open them up and clean all her tools and brushes before testing them.
It would help to know what she is currently using that irritates her eyes. That way those ingredients can be avoided.
Also: eye drops. Keeping the eyes hydrated is also very important and gets harder as we get older!
It might help if you share what she currently wears
A few things to cover first :
Have any of the products expired? No, not all things literally go out of date the day they say, but when someone has symptoms it’s a first thing to check. Even powders. I learned that the hard way with an old eye shadow I shouldn’t have used.
Mascara though, don’t mess with it. IN THE BIN when it’s past its date, wands are horrid for being able to hold onto bacteria. I personally only buy travel size mascara as I don’t want to risk it.
It may also not be the eye makeup specifically, even other things she puts on her face may irritate the eyes first. The best way is a process of elimination using one product a day to see how she goes.
Is she a contact lens wearer? It’s that much easier to be irritated if so. I never go to the root of my lash with mascara, and I’m very selective about eyeliner use.
My skin is very eczema and hives prone. Any little thing sets me off. I've been to many dermatologists and doctors but like many others, they just say I'm sensitive. I LOVE makeup but most of it makes me flare or I can only wear it like twice a week before it begins to bother me. What are some brands of makeup, specifically for like foundation/concealer and eyeliner/mascara that is favored for people like me? I can't use anything with any smell or at least lasting smell. Thanks!
I’ve had good experiences with Pur and Neutrogena. I prefer to use Neutrogena’s Sheers on my face and Pur’s pot concealer sparingly in the areas I need extra coverage.
Try tower 28s new SPF foundation!
Almay
Anytime I use makeup on or around my eyes (eyeliner/Foundation/Masscara etc) they swell shut, water and have a headache for days, I was wondering if anyone suffers the same? And or if there are any good makeup brands they don't have reactions to
i don’t get the swelling, but i can definitely get watering and headaches if i’m not using good quality products. i’ve just kinda noticed this, so some things i’ve noted:
Thank you so much :) I'll have a look into all the brand's you've mentioned tonight, and taking allergy meds is something I've never thought of I'll definitely bring it up with my doctor, I've never even thought about the make up brushes possibly affecting my eyes I haven't worn make up in 3 years but I remember I always washed them after use but I can't remember what hair they were made from, thank you for all the info it really helps me out :D

I am extremely histamine intollerant. I stopped wearing makeup years ago partly because my eyes get to red and burn no matter how hyperallergenic or new the makeup is. Has anyone found makeup they don't react to or at least react less to?
Almay.
I was wearing Cover Girl and Maybelline. My eyes became swollen, had a rash surrounding them, and burn red. I’m wearing sunglasses in all the selfies I took during my Chicago trip - even inside. I did research and discovered I wasn’t the only one have issues with those brands.
I had been getting acne a couple of years before then, and my sister recommended Almay. So I switched my foundation to Almay. When I had that allergic reaction around the eye, I went 100% Almay. Haven’t had a reaction related to makeup since then.
I've tried the ones labeled hypoallergenic, including Mary Kay and Neutrogena, but I don't think I've ever used Almay. I'll look into it. Thank you.
I know everyone is different, but for some reason the cheapo Wet n Wild eyeliner doesn't bother me.
Before, wearing anything near my eyes would trigger not only irritation but also sinus congestion.
I used Wet n Wild in the 80's. I could revisit it. Thank you
I also had to stop wearing eye makeup. I did find a mascara that’s alcohol free that works for me. It’s essence lash princess, less than $5 on Amazon
Is it all essence or just one kind?
Not sure. This is the one I use mascara. It’s advertised as alcohol free if you read the product description
Lash essence was rough for me. I don't react too much to make-up, but I could feel that Mascara all day long, and my eyes felt dry and heavy from it. I thought that's just what makeup felt like to me now until I switched to an expansive brand recommended by a worker at ulta. I barely feel that stuff, and my lashes don't get brittle from it either.
I pretty much only wear Clinique. Lash Power Mascara is great.
Me too. Their pencil eyeliner and shadows don't bother me, my lashes are blonde but I'm just curling my lashes now.
I have some Clinique shadow and blush. I'll see if it bothers my eyes. Thank you
I can only use Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions mascara (not their Volumizer) & some of their neutral-colored Eye Brightener pencils like Callie (taupe) & Mieko (pale pink). Every time I try a different brand I regret it. They have some decently priced ‘sets’ of these particular products & lots of sales, plus a good Rewards program.
Hello everyone, I’m looking to get back into trying to wear makeup after not wearing them for years (apart from two occasions which I had to wear it for family weddings and got allergic reactions to) due to skin sensitivity to them and just not wanting to deal with a potential reaction.
I have really sensitive skin when it comes to makeup (especially in certain parts of my face which seem to be more sensitive than others when I apply makeup onto like around my eye area) and currently have acne prone skin that I’m working on clearing.
The main makeup bits I’m looking for are lipsticks, eye liner (which I love but hate the sensitivity of it with my eyes with my lashes being the most sensitive around my entire eye region which is why I never wear eyelash stuff even if I do wear makeup because I’d rather not risk it with the eyelashes but love eyeliner soo so much and since it’s less sensitive for me than eye lash stuff I’m hoping their is one out their that won’t cause me to have a reaction to them) and concealer and maybe even some eyeshadow but not too fussy about that one.
For anyone with sensitive skin who uses vegan or cutlery free makeup can you tell me your experience with them aswell please.
Thank you in advance for any and all help and suggestions.
I have super sensitive, acne-prone skin too and found that vegan/cruelty-free brands are a lot gentler. For eyeliner, try Physicians Formula Eye Booster (hypoallergenic) or Ilia Clean Line, both are great for sensitive eyes. For concealer, BareMinerals Original Liquid Concealer or RMS Uncover Up are lightweight and don’t clog pores. Lipsticks: Bite Beauty or Tower 28 (allergy-tested + super creamy).
Patch test everything first! Sensitive skin loves fewer ingredients.
That’s one of the main reasons I wanted to go for a vegan/ cruelty free brand (them also having similar value systems as me also helped tremendously in my decision to go for a vegan brand rather than a non-vegan one) because they tend to have less toxic and harmful products that could cause a reaction within me.
Thank you soo much for all your help I will be checking out all of these brands and products. You have been such help.
In skin sensitivity we unite lol.
And yes I will definitely be patch testing them.

Key Considerations for Hypoallergenic Makeup Products:
Ingredients: Look for products that are free from common allergens, fragrances, parabens, and harsh chemicals. Check for labels that specifically state "hypoallergenic."
Skin Type Compatibility: Ensure the makeup is suitable for your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive, etc.). Some products are formulated specifically for sensitive skin.
Non-Comedogenic: Choose products labeled as non-comedogenic to avoid clogging pores, which can lead to breakouts and irritation.
Dermatologist Tested: Products that have been tested by dermatologists are often safer for sensitive skin.
Brand Reputation: Consider brands known for their commitment to hypoallergenic formulations, as they often prioritize skin health.
