What Redditors are Saying

Best Laptop for Rendering

TL;DR

  • Consider laptops with NVIDIA GPUs, such as the Lenovo Legion 7 or HP ZBook Studio G5.
  • Refurbished workstations like Dell Precision or HP ZBook with Quadro GPUs are also recommended.

NVIDIA Graphics Cards

For rendering tasks, especially in software like Lumion, Twinmotion, and 3ds Max, a laptop equipped with an NVIDIA graphics card is highly recommended. The NVIDIA GeForce series, particularly models like the GTX 1660 Ti or RTX cards, provide good performance for real-time rendering [4:1], [4:3]. For more stable 3D rendering, NVIDIA Quadro GPUs, such as the P2000 or P3200, are suggested, especially in refurbished workstations [4:1].

Recommended Laptop Models

Several specific laptop models were highlighted across the discussions. The Lenovo Legion 7 received a vote of confidence for its performance in rendering tasks [5:1]. The HP ZBook Studio G5, equipped with an Intel Xeon processor and a 4GB NVIDIA Quadro P1000 GPU, was also recommended for its robust specs suitable for rendering [4:4]. Additionally, gaming laptops like the ASUS ROG and HP Victus were mentioned as viable options due to their powerful GPUs [4:5], [4:3].

Budget Considerations

When working within a budget, refurbished workstations such as Dell Precision, HP ZBook, or Lenovo P52 can offer excellent value for money while still providing the necessary power for rendering tasks [4:1]. These machines often come with upgradeable components, which can be beneficial for future-proofing your setup. If possible, stretching the budget slightly to acquire a laptop with a GTX 1660 Ti or better can enhance performance significantly [4:1].

Portability and Noise Levels

For those who need a portable solution that can also be used in class or socially acceptable environments, it's important to consider the noise levels of the laptop. Some users have noted that gaming laptops, while powerful, can be quite noisy. Therefore, finding a balance between performance and noise is crucial, especially if the laptop will be used in shared spaces [5].

In conclusion, when selecting a laptop for rendering, prioritize models with strong NVIDIA GPUs, consider refurbished options for cost savings, and ensure the laptop meets your portability and noise level requirements.

You should really ignore the number and focus on the block

Use your fingers and find the smoothest, then go back one and start the next set from that one to fine tune it. So if the smoothest is -5, go to -10 for the next test and you may find the true smoothest result is 7 or 3 or something.

Its not about how the print looks but feels, as the looks can solved with different settings, its a pure flow test.

Is it just smoothest in the very center? What about the edges? Sometimes the edges are kinda rough but the center seems smooth.

I would pick 20 and do a second pass. 15 looks great, and 10 has a little underextrusion, so anything below 10 is not good.

2 sata i laku noc.

>For $620, prioritize refurbished workstations (Dell Precision, HP ZBook, Lenovo P52) with NVIDIA Quadro GPUs (P2000/P3200) for stable 3D rendering in 3ds Max. If Lumion/Twinmotion is the focus, a used gaming laptop (GTX 1660 Ti/1650) like the Acer Predator Helios 300 offers better real-time performance. Check eBay, Amazon Renewed, or Back Market for deals. Key specs: 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Quadro/GTX GPU. Avoid ultrabooks—opt for upgradeable machines. If possible, stretch to $700 for a GTX 1660 Ti (better for heavy rendering). Always verify GPU benchmarks and cooling before buying.

Looks like it. What software do you plan to render with? That will determine how suitable the laptop is. Generally if you plan to use enscape or D5, gpu renderers, then get a laptop with a good graphics card with high VRAM. Typically 6-8GB is good

the apple fans will say go for a macbook and many designers for some age old customs still prefer macbooks and iMacs. Well, if your budget allows, go for the fancy stuff to showoff.
But there are a lot of better options with Windows. My preference, would be to go for

  1. a good dual monitor setup with a true color screen (at least 27 " - curved is an overkill and unnecessary).
  2. at least 32 GB ram,
  3. an SSD without fail,
  4. A decent graphics card (NVIDIA or Radeon you don't need gaming standards here)
  5. For the processor,
    1. Intel - go for at least i5 (i7 or i9 is better, but will output more heat and poor on battery life (if mobility is your priority. Usually for designers mobility is not a priority, as they prefer doing the creative work connected to the larger screen). Remember to look for processor numbers ending with the letter K, X, HK, HX, H, or P and not U
    2. AMD - go for at least the 5 series. Again same trend on power consumption and battery life as with the Intel. Remember to look for processor numbers ending with the letter X or H
  6. for ports, look for at least 1 thunderbolt 4 port (in case of intel) or USB 4 (in case of AMD)

Combining all these specs, it is difficult to find such a laptop in India. Even if you do, the price will be prohibitively expensive due to the various import duties and GST. If you know someone in the US / Europe, buy a laptop during black friday sales in Nov and hope they carry it for you. Alternatively if you shop on Amazon dot com (not Amazon dot in) , set the delivery address to India, there are a few sellers who will handle the transportation and customs clearance. It will add to the base price of the laptop, but still you get some good laptops which cant be found in India.

My recommendation though would be to invest in a good custom built desktop as you will anyways be tied to a large screen. With desktops, you can buy, replace, repair, and upgrade individual parts as your budget allows and as newer models become available. Store your files to the cloud, and then for mobility to show your designs, have a decent budget laptop (between INR 75K - 1L) for presentations.

For blender and adobe my gtx 1650 worked pretty fine(had to upgrade to 16gb ram tho) but I'd recommend an rtx 3050 or 4060(if ur planning to go work more in blender so it renders faster) tho generally a 3050 should be good enough

I wanna buy a really good laptop for work on the go (3D and 2D animation) - help me choose

Posted by umwhateverred · in r/laptops · 5 months ago

Hello. I'm looking to buy a good laptop but I have no idea where to start.

What brands would you say have the best, most lasting machines for this type of work? (rendering, animating, sculpting, etc). I know most of you will recommend a MacBook Pro - I have used it before and I don't want a Mac. I know they're among the best but I just can't use MacOS anymore. I'm very used to Windows because of my PC and having to constantly switch isn't worth it.

Idk what to look for and what brand will give me the best possible laptop, I'm focusing more on the specs I need than the brand, but I guess I wanna know, are some better than the other?

Totally get you on the Mac thing—some folks love the ecosystem, others just want to right-click in peace 😄

If you're doing rendering, animating, sculpting, etc. (so we're talking Blender, Maya, ZBrush, maybe even Unreal?), you’ll definitely want something with a strong dGPU (like an RTX 4060 or higher), 32GB RAM minimum if you can swing it, and a high-refresh or color-accurate display if you're doing anything visual.

As far as brands that bring the power AND don't melt after a year, here’s a quick cheat sheet:

  • Lenovo Legion / ThinkPad (P-series) – Great thermals, solid build, easy upgrades.
  • ASUS ROG / ProArt StudioBook – Performance beasts, sleek enough to not scream “gamer”.
  • MSI Creator series – Designed with creatives in mind (and solid cooling).
  • Dell XPS 15/17 – Pricey, but premium feel and display. The XPS with an RTX GPU can handle most creative tasks.

Avoid ultra-thin laptops unless you like your legs being toasted during a render 😅

I put together a no-nonsense guide on my blog for creatives and devs like you. Might help cut through the noise:
https://eternaltouristreviews.blogspot.com/2025/03/best-laptop-for-gaming-students-and.html

Hope that helps—and may your viewport always stay smooth!

best laptop for rendering

Key Considerations for Choosing a Laptop for Rendering:

  1. Processor (CPU): Look for a high-performance multi-core processor. Intel Core i7 or i9, or AMD Ryzen 7 or 9 are excellent choices for rendering tasks due to their high clock speeds and core counts.

  2. Graphics Card (GPU): A powerful dedicated GPU is crucial for rendering, especially for 3D modeling and video editing. NVIDIA RTX series (like RTX 3060, 3070, or 3080) or AMD Radeon RX series are recommended.

  3. RAM: Aim for at least 16GB of RAM, but 32GB or more is ideal for handling large projects and multitasking efficiently.

  4. Storage: SSDs (Solid State Drives) are preferred for faster load times and data access. A combination of SSD (for OS and applications) and HDD (for storage) can be beneficial.

  5. Display: A high-resolution display (at least 1080p, preferably 4K) with good color accuracy is important for visual work.

  6. Cooling System: Rendering can generate a lot of heat, so a laptop with an efficient cooling system is essential to maintain performance.

Recommendations:

  • Apple MacBook Pro (16-inch, M1 Pro or M1 Max): Excellent for rendering with powerful performance, great battery life, and a stunning Retina display. The M1 Max chip is particularly strong for graphics-intensive tasks.

  • Razer Blade 15: Known for its sleek design and powerful specs, it offers options for high-end GPUs and a fast refresh rate display, making it great for rendering and gaming.

  • ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14: A compact yet powerful option with AMD Ryzen 9 and NVIDIA RTX 3060 or 3070, suitable for rendering on the go.

  • Dell XPS 15: Offers a good balance of performance and portability, with options for high-end CPUs and GPUs, plus a beautiful 4K display.

Choose based on your specific needs, budget, and whether you prefer Windows or macOS.
