TL;DR The Reaper Leviathan is often considered the best due to its terrifying presence and predatory nature, while the Sea Emperor is admired for its peaceful demeanor and crucial role in the game's storyline.
Reaper Leviathan
The Reaper Leviathan is frequently mentioned as a favorite due to its intimidating appearance and behavior. It is one of the first aggressive leviathans players encounter, making them acutely aware of the dangers on Planet 4546B [4:2]. Its echolocation ability adds to its creepiness, and many players find it fascinating
[5:5]. The Reaper's soulless black eyes and insect-like mandibles make it particularly unsettling
[3:8].
Sea Emperor Leviathan
In contrast, the Sea Emperor Leviathan is celebrated for its peaceful nature and significant role in curing the player of the Kharaa infection [2:5]
[5:1]. Despite being the largest leviathan, it does not pose a threat, which makes it unique among the leviathans. Its symbiotic relationships and calming presence are appreciated by players who prefer non-aggressive creatures
[4:11].
Ghost Leviathan
The Ghost Leviathan also garners attention for its eerie presence, especially when encountered in the void. Its dark blue glow and screeching sound create a haunting experience for players [4:3]. While it serves as a guardian or gatekeeper, its design is praised for adding depth to the game's environment
[4:2].
Reefback Leviathan
The Reefback Leviathan is favored by those who appreciate its passive nature. It is often seen early in the game and provides resources through barnacles on its back [2:9]. Its chill demeanor and role in the ecosystem make it an S-tier creature for players who enjoy exploring without constant threats
[2:8].
Shadow Leviathan
For fans of Below Zero, the Shadow Leviathan stands out due to its impressive design and less intimidating nature compared to other aggressive leviathans. Players often have defense systems by the time they encounter it, reducing its threat level [2:7]. Its aesthetic appeal makes it a favorite among some players
[4:10].
Overall, the choice of the best leviathan varies based on personal preferences for gameplay style, aesthetics, and the narrative impact of each leviathan within the Subnautica universe.
Reefback best leviathan
The skeleton in the lost river.... Nice and extinct
My favorite is the one that nevers shows up ^^
Where sea treader
Those are the best type for playing the game
the best leviathan is a dead leviathan
Reaper - a bitch
Ghost - a bitch
Dragon - kinda cool, but still a bitch
Sea treader- wants to do his own thing and be left alone, I can respect that
Emperor - love her, amazing
Reefback - absolute S tier, got the right idea in life, chilling and riding the waves, can't do better
For the BZ leviathans:
Shadow - long noodle with extra steps
Ice worm - terrifying, have to time when to use the boost on the snowfox (or just use the PRAWN suit)
Chelicerate - looks like it deliberately went to the lowest depths of hell for fun and also has a trash compactor for a head
Void chelicerate - looks like a chelicerate corpse since it’s decaying from the lack of nutrients in the void, makes normal chelicerates look like baby shrimps
Shadow is the least intimidating in the entire game actual safety wise. Most people already have the FREE defense system upgrade for the seatruck before encountering one. They're just big stupid slightly annoying snakes after that
They look awesome tho
Sea treader is the only useful one though since it's poop is fantastic for bio reactors.
Yes, reefbacks have barnacles, but I don't find it nearly as useful.
The emperor does >! cure you though !< , so I guess there's that too.
Despite the description, the poop isn't even in the running for being fantastic bioreactor fuel. Oculus is king, with Reginald as runner up. Plant-wise, acid shrooms and gel sacks are the best contenders, but some like the convenience of melons or lantern fruit since they can be planted in the same room.
I love the barnacles early on I found they are great ways to get guaranteed copper or silver instead of randomly hoping and praying very useful when first setting up your base.
Poop is only 300 energy each and you have to go gather it. Bulbo tree cuttings are renewable and hold 420 energy.
I set up two plant pots next to my bioreactor with a bulbo tree in each. The second one is there in case I accidentally eat the last cutting instead of replanting it.
iirc they're in a dark valley to the right of the small Blood Kelp Zone. There's dozens of them constantly migrating South and they create ore deposits as they walk which is great for getting diamonds and stuff.
The elusive Peeper leviathan
Mesmer leviathan is best. I have full autonomy to make my decision and mesmers are the greatest.
Maybe in the next game it will be possible to build bases on the backs of some creatures
Go to the seafloor below degasi island.
There probably aren’t any other peaceful and intelligent leviathans on 4546B. They either try to kill you or just moan at you like the reefback
The Sea Dragon is not a peaceful leviathan. I think youre mistaking it for the Sea Emperor.
Look at it instead this way. The crater (and likely most of the planet) were in an extremely precarious balance due to Kharaa. That sort of precarious balance was due to how many individuals in a species were unlikely to reach maturity and reproduce before death. With the pressure from Kharaa removed, it’s also possible to have population explosions from the bottom of the food chain up to the top.
So it could take a long, long time to see, but it’s possible that leviathan populations increase as their food sources grow and survival challenges become far easier.
It will forever bother me that the Sea Dragon is less scary than a Reaper. The soulless black eyes of the Reaper along with it's mandibles that make it's whole face insect-like makes it very unsettling. Also by the time you find a Sea Dragon, you have a Prawn Suit that can sustain multiple hits. I'd imagine a fair amount of players were still swimming around with their Sea Glides when they suddenly looked up and saw their first Reaper looming overhead, nothing to protect them.
They're scary because if they attack a cyclops they can knock lockers out. So once I have all vehicles I only fear sea dragons.
My first time with a reaper was when I went out to the Aurora...except I didn't encounter any. I could hear them, but I couldn't see them. So once I was done with my aurora exploration, I saved and set out to try and actively find one to see if my game bugged out or something. Took me like 10 minutes of trying to follow their roaring to finally find one.
Well I mean the volcano crater has been there for who knows how long... Plenty of completely isolated evolution has taken place... I Dont Know... Like im not entirely certain but I didnt see any reapers, jelly rays or sand sharks in subnautica 2 trailers. Those are blunt examples but still.
The Sea Dragon? Probably, by the time of Subnautica 2. There were only three left and the PDA said they were going extinct.
wait, can you elaborate? did it fall on the biggest entrance? Also >!didn't the baby leviathans swin through the portal at the end, which leads to the open space?!<
It's worth remembering that the PDA says the eggs on 4546B work differently to ours on Earth in that they are kept in stasis until conditions are right to hatch; if the Sea Emperor eggs are anything to go by then the time (months, years, decades?) it takes for life on the planet to bounce back from the virus shouldn't effect the Sea Dragon eggs.
What is more problematic though is that while the cannon of it is debatable regarding the old Hell Hole where the Sea Dragons would presumably leave and hunt reapers, when the devs moved the entrance of the hole to the lava zone to the lost river they didn't account for a way for the Sea Dragons to leave and hunt reapers.
This has led to many people assuming that oh the Aurora blocked their entry, which is a valid assumption but we know that Sea Dragons can leave the lava zone via the Sacred Tree (I don't remember the real name) where they went and attacked the disease research facility. Now the question is can they move through the rest of the lost river to find reapers? Genuinely I don't think there is a way for them where the cavern is big enough.
However, it's worth noting that we never see the animals actually have routines. The Crabsnakes will never visually leave their cave, but we know they do via the lifepod attack. The Crabsquid are said to have an insatiable appetite and gorge themselves constantly, but we never see that. Crashfish only go kaboom at the nesting stage of their life cycle, but we don't see any crash fish before that stage. It's one of my wishes for Subnautica 2 for it to have (for some fish) a routine system like Kingdom Come 2, it would be so cool having vertical migrators that are nocturnal like in real life or the fish having places to sleep.
Also no Sea Dragons implies that the Reapers might be without their singular natural predator and could explode in population, have fun with that information :D
it kinda looks cool having those arms, can easily grab reapers and cook them
Personally its the shadow leviathan, its so cool in my opinion. I even made a base in the crystal caves just so i would always see peak introvert personified into gigsntic fish constantly swim around,
Also idk wich flair to put so i jsut putother cause this is ranging for all the games and not just a specific one
I personally think that Reapers are the best Leviathans, they are the first ones you encounter, that actually terrify you and make you acutely aware that this Planet is NOT a nice place to be.
And they are the only ones that seem like actual predatory Super-Life-Forms instead of Guardian/Gatekeepers like the Ghost, Shadow or Sea Dragon. Chelicerate is a weaker version of Reapers imo and Squidsharks... eeeeh
Technically they may be the first aggressive leviathan you see, reefbacks are the first leviathans we come across on entry
that is true, I just didnt count friendly leviathans with this one. Sea Emperor, the Jelly Vents from BZ, Reefbacks etc. They are all cool but for me I like dangerous Leviathans more
Yeah I wandered to the back of the Aurora my first play. Didn’t know about the game at all, I bought it because I remember watching jacksepticeye playing it and I completely forgot what happened but I remembered it looked fun. I’m happy I went in so blind but that first leviathan was terrifying. Did not know this game was like that
Shadow leviathan is not really the 'guardian gatekeeper' I'd say. They look like something that can actually exist. Same cannot be said for the ghost and the reaper.
i like the adult ghost leviathan in the void, especially when it's pitch black and you see the dark blue creature with a screech. So cool
I just like all the creatures including the leviathans. A lot of thought went into the designs.
Thats a ventgarden, really cool and chill Leviathans, even have some good resources if you enter through their mouth
No way, that's one of the best creatures. That and the jellyfish by Phi robotics.
I like the fact it relies on symbiotic relationship
Subnautica 2 needs this kind of stuff. Not just limited to the void either. Like some kind of thing like this that is massive and will actively hunt you.
Also something like a swarm or school of piranha or something that will just gobble you up if it gets on you, but not a single organism, that does it. Just ton of little ones.
ACI did such a good job with the mod. I'm way too scared to play with it
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I LOVE Reaper Leviathans. I love how creepy they look and am fascinated by the fact that they use echolocation to spot you. What is everyone’s favorite leviathan?
It depends, I like reefbacks but my greatest scare comes from a sea dragon so idk what to choose
Sea emperor because it’s the biggest and yet it is peaceful
Absolutely and entirely unwarranted chelicerate hate
Hey man, the idea of the opening mouth has been used so many times in horror recently and even used on the squid shark. Just feels like an insult to compare them to my glorious reaper. Tiny as all hell as well and has no stalking presence
I mean, fair on the mouth thing, but basically, all of them do that. The Shadow Leviathan also has like no stalking presence.. you see one in the caverns you just... go on the other side of the cavern from it. At least chelicerate feels like an actual threat to me - for some reason, that escapes me.
Additionally, chelicerate breaks the mold for me in terms of leviathan design. They're less fish-like or eel-like and more crustacious- they look like evil shark crabs, and they're very alien.. unlike the squid shark. They feel like something that darwinian evolution might actually poop out, compared to the.. giant.. glowing mouth blue shadow leviathan thing. Or the squid shark.
They seem to have a lot more design philosophy and character to them, which makes the appeal for me
Reaper looks goofy a/f althou it has great AI and is scarry as all hell. But in terms of design Chelicerate takes the cake out of all Subnautica creatures, although it`s AI is bad
You are the first person I've ever seen that doesn't love the ice leviathan design and your existence baffles me
I love the ice leviathan design. However the other factors brought it down for me. The story connected to it never actually made like sense to me like whatsoever. Sam died because of being negligent about dealing with it and I don't understand how these people somehow made a cure without the sea emporer's enzymes when a much more advanced race couldn't do the same. Also I simply can't put it higher when it doesn't actually move. Would absolutely love to see it in the future moving though.
I completely forgot that BZ had both an ice leviathan and the ice worm leviathan.
I meant the ice worm. Why is he in okay?
I assume it was because while Sam didn't have the actual enzyme, Alterra had sampled some of it and had its chemical structure on record.
I find myself personally offended that you don't include The Sea Emperor in your top tier. How are you gonna disrespect our girl like that?
Next time I see her, I'm telling her I don't know you.
What would the squid shark be rated?
Probably a low tbh. The design seems slightly lavy tbh and hardly threatening with the amount of damage they do. Also the noise they give off makes like no sense compared to their size. I can hear them louder than the Chelicerate sometimes.
Sea treader supremacy 🙏🙏
I think the vent garden is the most unique. A living biome as a leviathan? That’s cool. The least unique is easily the void chelicerate. Changing the color scheme, giving it glowing eyes and making it slightly bigger isn’t that creative
Don’t think the devs even consider it a leviathan, either. Idk I just played the games, I don’t know what leviathan and what’s not, it game be thalassophobia, I continued to play until they (sort of) announced subnautica 2-3 whatever.
If you had read the PDA entries you'd know what is a leviathan and what isn't.
A living biome as a leviathan? That's cool.
*sad reefback leviathan noises*
The shadow leviathan design is so crazy I love it. Also a big fan of the Ice Worm too. Glow whales are kinda mid tho
The shadow leviathan has a really cool design but my big gripe is that it just isn’t very scary. Seeing a huge mouth coming to swallow you is way more terrifying than a mass of blue jello. I’m glad the shadow leviathan is in BZ but I wish they would’ve had it in a different location and implemented something scarier for the “grand finale” zone. Stumbling upon the sea dragon leviathans for the first time was such a terrifying moment, because up until that point you’d have thought the reapers were the baddest leviathans in the sea.
Yeah making the mouth glow actually takes away from the fear factor. I don't find bright colourful neon lights to be scary, and it also doesn't look real to me. Why does its mouth light up?
In the original Subnautica, for most people, the Reaper Leviathan is the scariest of the Leviathians. It is also one of the few creatures that doesn't glow in the dark. It's not supposed to be pretty to look at.
Really? The shadow leviathans were one of the only things in these games that actually scared me. I was never afraid of the sea dragons, or even the reapers, but the shadows were awful.
Mostly because they were really good at just vanishing. I got out and tried to scan one, and it kept biting me and then just, fully vanishing. That shit is terrifying. At least when a Reaper is trying to kill me I can see it.
For some reason if I had to choose I would say Chelicerate, lol. I love everything about it, except it's weird AI
It’s not a different leviathan though, it’s just an adult leviathan
Yeah, they’re the second smallest leviathans if you count squid sharks (which doesn’t really make much sense because squid sharks arent that big but idk)
My hungry ass thought you said Which leviathan is the most delicious
Which leviathan is the best? (sorry, couldnt add all, too many options apparently).
The sea emperor would be so cool if she did anything other than sit there and cure you
I mean, you’d probably just sit there too if most of your energy is gone from swimming in the same room for 1,000 years
Ice worms are cool, and they remind me of the movie “Tremors” which I really liked
Yes i think theyre cool too.
Sea Treader!
Vent garden
Reefback leviathan always.
I think we all know the best choice....
Reefback. Also, peepers aren't leviathans.
Can we get an F in the chat for sea treaders and reefbacks?
Oh right I forgot about them
I was going to put ghost but saw peeper
Can’t resist the eye of the peeper
The peeper is the scariest of them all
Crashfish that's worse than any leviathan
Agreed
Ghost Leviathan for sure, something about being a lonely, thin, ghost-like creature that eats very little, spends all of its time in a dark pit and gets angry when someone disturbs it just seems familiar to me... i just don't know why...
It's screech is like 100× scarier than the Reaper.
The 4th is actually just a mod right?
Well it's based off a fossil from the game.
very loosley based tho
its not based on the fossil but instead unofficial art one of unknown worlds concept artists made as a commission of a possible gargantuan leviathan
its based on something that's based on the fossil
sorry if this sounded mean my tone skills are shit
Yes I learned.. but is the Mod actually worth a shot? I am hesitating with starting to use mods because I feel like once I start there will be several to add and might ruin the experience?
Also my personal favorite is the Reaper.
solid
i think reapers are a TAD bit overrated
but they're liked so much for a reason
Big mom will always have a place in my heart
I have a feeling there's going to be crazy amount of Sea emperor simpers in the comments.
We all simp the Sea Emp
I like them for different reasons...
They're intelligent, gigantic, look cool, look friendly and have telepathy bro.
They're related to the Sea dragon yet they are super friendly.
