Honestly in a lot of other Emmy seasons Andor would have won Best Drama. But going up against The Pitt and Severance? This Emmy's was a murderer's row.
Agree, I would’ve only been disappointed if Andor walked away with 0 wins during the main show since I think it deserves at least some recognition. Otherwise all the winners were absolutely deserved. The Pitt came out of nowhere and stole the year, I’m happy that Noah Wyle essentially got a lifetime achievement award and won for the show he helped write & produce.
The Pitt was crushing it last night, but it's a show I had zero interest in because hospital/first responder shows have been done to death. Is it really that good?
Pretty solid haul for a show that didn’t have a ton of crossover appeal in the mainstream and was going up against the phenomenon that is The Pitt (which is another outstanding show, hard to be upset about any award Andor lost to it).
Man, it's a one of a kind show.
It's very hard to produce something of this level, sorry to say this, but it is what it is.
It's like you saying: Citizen Kane was written all those years ago, and every one learns from it, so why isn't everything as good as Citizen Kane? Why is everyone doing films that are not as good as such?
If you asked me 5 years ago if a show about Cassian Andor was a good idea, I would've laughed at you. If you told me that it would one day be my favorite out of all star wars shows I'd be rolling on the floor laughing and think you needed a psychiatrist.
Well here I am, firmly claiming that a show about Cassian fucking Andor is up there with the best shows of all time such as the Wire, Breaking Bad, and Deadwood. It's unreal, and I love it.
And y’know, mon mothma, which was just an absolute gorgeous piece of casting
Won. Way. Out!
I’m not disparaging Star Wars. Ive been a fan for essentially my entire life, so I know the average quality of the franchise and how great of an exception Andor is. I also know what these industry organizations tend to nominate, and it’s usually not installments in long running franchises like Star Wars. I like the MCU too, but I don’t expect any of those movies or shows to win awards outside of a tech category here and there let alone awards for writing. All I meant was to celebrate Andor as an achievement, and hope Lucasfilm allows skilled creatives play in the universe with similar freedom to what Gilroy & co got to do with this show.
I like to picture that he found a way out.
Well, Kathleen Kennedy fought for Andor from the beginning, and since she is the Lucasfilm President, there's a chance will get more of this, not less.
I enjoy the space wizards as much as anyone, but I also enjoy stories of the rest of the universe. The average guy as well as the exceptional hero.
I'm considering trading in my 2017 Toyota RAV4 XLE AWD, for a new 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Trailsport.
I see there's a new 2026 Cherokee coming out soon.
Also, I've been hearing rumours of a new Toyota FJ / "Baby Land Cruiser" for a long time.
There's rumours of a new Nissan X-Terra.
And there's probably a new CR-V coming in a couple years -- which could possibly feature a more capable "Trailsport" features (like the current Passport Trailsport).
I don't mind waiting if there's something new and interesting just around the corner ...
TL;DR - What new "mild off-roader" small-ish SUVs are expected in the next coupe of years?
If you haven't watched the Hagerty video on the Toyota Landcruiser, I would watch it. The new Land Cruiser is based on the Prado LC, which is the same as the GX. I'm hoping they come out with a smaller option like a SUV version of the Toyota Stout that's been rumored. And I hope there's a Prime version of it. The last full size LC in the US is the Lexus LX.
Thanks for the tips. I have seen the Land Cruiser and unfortunately it's too big for me. A smaller Land Cruiser would be cool.
If you're excited about the CR-V Trailsport, you should know the biggest benefit from this "off road" edition is a set of off-road tires. Which you can put on any damn crossover you like.
Yeah. I know the Trailsport edition is really just looks, not capability. But I prefer cloth seats and these ones are really nice, I do like the off-roady tires (for winter cottage country roads), and I love the new Ash Green color.
What I really want is a vehicle as nice as the CR-V that has some off roady chops -- a better AWD, preferably with some kind of locking rear diff, and some underbody protection.
Basically what I want is a Honda Passport the size of a CR-V.
I won't go Subaru because of bad past experience, and I'm not going back.
I don't care for the current Toyota RAV4, and 4Runner is too big for me.
I don't trust Jeep reliability and resale.
So, it's going to be CR-V .... unless I decide to wait for something new.
Help me understand why you don't get a Passport. Is it really just about the few inches of length and width between them, or is there a larger spec difference (specifically fuel economy) that I'd want to keep in mind when looking at other options?
A Ford Bronco Sport Badlands has a similar pseudo-LSD rear drive unit that a Passport uses, puts out similar power, and is even smaller than a CR-V. It's more rugged than "nice," so I'll point out that you can also get this feature in a Buick Envision.
A Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk goes so far as to have a low range and an actual rear diff locker. They're cheap now, and had about 10 years to fix their powertrain issues (which they mostly did). But you don't trust Jeep, so oh well.
I looked into the aftermarket a bit, and it seems you can get an aftermarket rear diff locker for an Subaru. That makes its Wilderness models actually pretty compelling. But you won't go back, so oh well...
Certainly, you can modify in the skid plates yourself.
Dumb question, but how about a GR Corolla? The dual-LSD AWD system is pretty killer, right? I wish they put that shit in a RAV4...
Next gen rav4 should be out soon. Also the jeep recon and rivian r2.
If you are able to wait I would do so for the new baby Land Cruiser or FJ.
The baby LC basically just came out. Is there a refresh coming or something?
There's an even smaller Land Cruiser coming out ... some call it "baby Land Cruiser" or the "new FJ".
Here's a silhouette that they teased at the new Land Cruiser launch ...
It is supposed to be EV? I can't keep up with the rumors.
That is the rumor I am reading as well.
Yeah, I wish I had more info on it. Any idea when we're supposed to hear more about it?
It has always been on my bucket list to visit Newport, RI. I am thinking of visiting in mid october. Is it still a good time to visit? Do you suggest staying in Provenance or Jamestown? How far will it be from the mansions like the Breakers? Is it still a good time to eat oysters and lobsters.’We’ll have a car, a little kid and 2 little dogs.
The drive from Providence to Newport is 45 minutes, without traffic. There are events in Newport throughout October. There is very little lodging in Jamestown, except for the Club Wyndham timeshare. Many more options in Newport and Middletown.
Do these governers not know it's not us that's the problem? Instead of trying to make Canadians feel guilty about not coming down anymore, they need to go to the source of the problem. Read the Room Americans.
And furthermore, all those places’ pleas to Canadians are some form of “come spend your money with us” which is completely off putting. It really exposes that they see (have seen) Canadians purely as a revenue stream and nothing else. An angle that Might have worked is “we are trumps victims too” or leaning in to the wonderful friendships and memories that Canadians have cultivated over the past decades- that would make us feel loved and missed on personal levels - but their hammering of the money side of things only makes it all the cheaper and more cringingly transactional.
Hey, if they want to come to Canada to try to convince us (not going to work) and spend money in Canada for gas, hotels, meals and whatever else they want, so be it. Spend your money here trying to convince us to spend money there which we won’t because your country that is run by a pedo is actively trying to annex us. Screw you USA
Only 30% drop? That needs to double at minimum, stop going people
Lots of people work across the border, are required to go for business, or have family in the states. I would love to see 100% decline, but there are some situations that limit options
Exactly. This is our problem to fix on this side of the border. And even if we manage to fix it, like last time, we can still end up right back here.
It’s America land of the stupid, everyone’s a problem except them
I am genuinely puzzled as to what these various governors from border states think they will accomplish on these “trade missions”. Canadians did not stop visiting the US on a whim. Our sovereignty and our economy have been directly threatened by the current US administration. Maybe they should work on fixing that problem first. We are not friends any more. Quit whining about it - it just makes you look out of touch and kind of pathetic.
"So.... Canada.... how can we be part of that?"
It is glaringly obvious, that Americans see us as beneath them, as though we were backwards people who "just need a good talking to", by an American (who knows best), to help us understand.
Also I think they're just using the same treatment on us that apparently works with their own population... marketing and sales pitches. Politicians are actually supposed to listen to concerns, so they can understand the issues which they need to address and solve. In essence, this is like a window into American propaganda at election time, where they come attempting to brainwash you, with their travelling dog and pony show.
"Canada doesn't have anything we want or need, it's a nasty country "
How does this work? Their governor tells our representatives to tell their constituents to spend more money in New Hampshire?
Hey all! My wife and I have built up about 800k points on our Bonvoy card, we’re also vacation club owners and have platinum elite status. We were looking to do a weekend getaway around the first week of December to somewhere drivable from CT. I was thinking of using the points to stay at something like the St Regis or Essex House in NYC since we only really ever stay in the vacation club properties or like a residence inn, but I saw those 2 properties had some mixed reviews as of late.
Anybody have suggestions for a good December getaway hotel drivable from CT that would be worth using up some of these points?
I stayed in the ritz in nyc as it had soundproof windows thankfully. It lacked amenities though which was sad. What about driving up to Montreal or Tremblant or Vermont
Nice conundrum to have. Here for the suggestions 👍
Yeah for sure! Initially I was all in for the St Regis or Essex House given their locations, but then I started looking at reviews and while there’s lots of positive ones there’s also a bunch of reviews talking about them being outdated, service not being what it should be, etc and some people said you’re better off spending the money with other st Regis, ritz, or JW properties so figured I’d ask around for ideas
I couldn’t decide between the three you mention either and ended up doing the ritz based on the points per room. It sucks it didn’t have a pool and the steam room was broken but I did have a fantastic facial and massage there. I couldn’t get a reply from the other two fast enough and the ritz answered the phone when I called crying from another Marriott hotel after a long night of no sleep and pouring rain lol
There's a lot of coverage in this sub for the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii, etc.; I thought it would be worth adding an easy drivable destination in the NY/New England area. Tl;dr - it's a nice, scenic chubby spot for a family getaway with plenty of outdoor activities. Food is ok, but I did go into it with high expectations based on the Relais & Chateau association. Still, it’s an excellent option and we plan to return next summer.
As a family of six, kids ages 3-12, the name of our travel game is convenience. When we get to where we're going, we prefer to stay on-resort. Kids are starting to age out of vacations where the only draw is the beach (e.g., renting a house in the Hamptons). In the NYC area, the Venn diagram of chubby/fat resort, family friendly, sub 4 hour drive feels pretty empty. Sidenote - I'm all ears for other suggestions!
Enter Weekapaug Inn, which we booked with u/alextravels. It's a sister property to Ocean House in nearby Watch Hill (a bit on that later). It's a historic resort/hotel built pre-1900, oozes old school charm and is, IMO, perfectly updated. It's situated at one end of a 2.5mi long pond (lake?), and is a short walk 5 minute walk to a long sandy beach. 2.5 hours from NY metro area and about the same from Boston. It’s a relatively small resort with 30 or so keys. There's a nice variety of rooms, standard inn-type rooms, some connecting, a few one-bedroom suites, and 4-2BR 1800sf named suites w/full kitchen, washer/dryer, and den.
Room
Standard rooms start at around $1200 per night in the summer, sub-$600 in the winter. We booked one of the 2BR suites at ~$4k per night. Impeccably clean, well updated and outfitted/furnished. Some board games available in the room. No TV in the main living space, but one in each of the bedrooms, which we liked. Ran into 2 somewhat major issues with the suite – water temperature in the showers was tepid, borderline cold the first night. Spoke with reception who relayed the issue to engineering, who then took it a bit too far and made it uncomfortably hot. The temperature balance handle didn’t work – I suspect the cartridges need to be replaced. Second, HVAC wasn’t adjustable via the thermostat. There was a bit of a rattle in one of the registers, and efforts to turn it off via the thermostat by turning the temp up when on cool, or setting the fan to “off,” didn’t work. We ended up being shown which breakers in the unit we needed to flip to turn off the unit. It was clear that management took our complaints here very seriously – it was never just “let go.” We felt adequately comp’d for the issues on check-out.
Service/Amenities
Really solid everywhere at the resort. Never overbearing, everyone was very pleasant to interact with. Brief nods or “Hi, how’s your day” from all staff as you come across them at the resort. The beach is a probably about a quarter mile walk from the entrance to the resort – an easy walk unless you have a 3-yr old who insists on carrying their own beach toys. Resort offered to take us to and from in a large golf cart; we never had to wait more than 5 minutes.
Importantly, and this was a criticism I had of Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos – the answer from staff for a question was never a blunt “no.” Reception was really good with following up with us, recalled specific things we had requested making sure that the actionable items had been completed. Some examples – we requested “in room” dining from the on-site restaurant, and this was accommodated. It doesn’t seem like a big ask, but at a few places we’ve been to (especially those with on-site fine dining/limited seating), there’s a firewall between the restaurant kitchen and the in-room dining kitchen. Feels like a really simple thing to do, but apparently not?
A few notes here – the fitness center and pool are on the ground floor of a building adjacent to the main Inn that houses a few of the suites. As a result, the fitness center is not 24HR and closes at 7pm for the guests upstairs – which I understand, but I feel like 7pm is a bit early. Pool has kids hours from 10-5, adults lap swim from 7-10am; 5-8pm. It’s a 25 yard pool, but not that wide. Good enough for an hour splashing around.
Activities
One of the biggest strengths – the grounds and the pond. Grounds are wonderfully kept. Lots of lawn games for the kids, and just open space for them to run around. Shuffleboard, cornhole, bucket golf, etc. The Inn builds a fire for nightly s’mores around the firepit, and it’s nice to sit back with a glass of wine while the kids work out the last of their energy running around playing.
On the pond – it’s such an asset to the Inn. It’s large enough that you can’t see the other end a few miles away, and calm enough for kids to paddle around or wade in, no waves or current to fight. The Inn loans out standard resort watercraft – kayaks, small sailboats, etc. They have some local HS/college kids running nature-type programs as counselors – going digging for crabs with nets was a lot more fun than I would have anticipated.
At the beach – Weekapaug Inn is situated in the middle of a residential area. I suspect that if it didn’t exist today, residents in the area would never allow it to be built. It’s a symbiotic relationship now; guests at the Inn are granted access to the residential association’s beach, and basic service of setting up chairs/pitching umbrellas is taken care of. The Inn has a small seasonal beach restaurant on site that makes excellent pizza, there are nice facilities (changing rooms with shower, restrooms) as well.
Food
The Inn is part of the Relais & Chateau association, so I had really high expectations going into it based on my experience after having stayed and eaten at Castle Hill Inn about an hour away in Newport. It fell a bit short, if I’m being honest – but that’s not to say there weren’t some good menu items here and there. Breakfasts were overall very good, but I don’t think that’s as hard to execute. Maybe I didn’t try the right dishes?
Ocean House
There’s an association with Ocean House (OH) in nearby Watch Hill, but it’s looser than I would have hoped. A facility or amenity that is present at both facilities are restricted to guests at that specific property. While we paid for a cabana at the OH for a day, we were told that the beach would otherwise be a paid amenity by guests of the Inn with a day pass. We did not have access to the pool at OH (it’s indoors anyway, and part of the spa). We also did not have access to the gym at Ocean House which is 24HR, unlike that at the Inn.
OH is a bit of a scene. It’s a destination in and of itself the area, so there’s a lot more hustle and bustle throughout the property. Everyone’s a bit more dressed up, parking is Valet only, there’s no relaxed lawn space for kids to run around, club-ish music is played at the restaurant down by the beach. Service at the OH beach is much more involved than at Weekapaug’s beach – lots of attendants running around with food/drinks. Beach chairs and umbrellas are set up in lines at regular intervals, and I didn’t get the feeling they’d be open to us requesting some be set up at the ocean edge where we like to hang out while our kids are playing in the surf. The visit to OH was nice, but I don’t think we’ll be making that side trip next time we go.
That second photo of the beach - gorgeous!! 🌊This property is often mentioned as a summertime, family-friendly NE destination, but I haven’t seen many write-ups beyond the occasional family travel blogger over the years… so it’s terrific to have such a detailed firsthand review.
I'm glad you found it helpful! I was pleasantly surprised by the beach and how clear the water was. I'm used to the waters in the Northeast being quite murky. That outcropping off Rhode Island is somewhat close to the entrance of the Long Island Sound, so I was worried that the beach would be rocky - but it was all around a really nice beach experience.
I left off a few activities that we didn't do because we find time for it - stargazing, fishing, Sunday BBQ, electric boat tour of the pond. We'll save that for next summer.
I’ve stayed at Castle Hill several times. I’ll add this to my list for next year
It's got a very similar ambiance, level of service. Castle Hill is very much a low key, unwind, relax, eat and drink well kind of place. I've never been with my kids; I imagine they'd get bored.
Weekapaug is much more family friendly, get the kids outside doing stuff. The lawn is similar to that at Castle Hill, just on a smaller scale, and feels more lighthearted with kids running around.
Would this be a good destination with children in the fall? I’m thinking early November with my boys-2 and 4 years old
I think it will depend on what they like to do. I expect that the bulk of the resort's outdoor offerings are going to be suspended by September - boathouse, beach service, etc. I would call them and ask what's running/available at the time.
Thanks!
Thank you for this thoughtful review! Saving for future trip planning.
Hello! My fiancé and I are getting married in CT at the end of October. We want to do a mini moon in the region right after wedding weekend to decompress and recover before having to go back in to work. We'd like to see more of New England we haven't yet since we both grew up outside of it.
Parts of New England one or both of us haven't been to:
What we would like in a mini-moon stay (hotel, bed & breakfast, etc.)
We're trying to keep it around $300 a night. We've considered tapping a travel agent just because we're so stretched thin from planning the wedding but we'd like to see if y'all have any recs. TIA!
RI at the end of October would be beautiful! Lots of fall foliage in Maine, VT and Berkshire’s will be passed. I lived in RI for a few years and loved it, and especially loved the beaches in the colder months. You could stay in Newport, there are many dog friendly boutique hotels. You could also stay somewhere cute in an air bnb in Providence to save on costs and travel in and around RI from there. I think a lot of the places are pretty pricey in Newport. Congrats!!!
By October, Paws on Pelham in Newport should be around $300/ night. I'm booking a sister property during peak season and it's only $335/night
I loved this rec but for some reason that last Monday of October is blocked for all of their rooms. What a bummer! I'll keep it on my radar though it's so cute.
Bodhi spa in Newport or Providence is great!
Bar Harbor, Maine!
This. Acadia is one of the few dog friendly national parks
I recommend Northampton, MA in general. There's a lot of great bars, restaurants, a great art museum and we love East Heaven (which is more bathhouse than spa but could work). It is also an extremely queer-friendly place. Other than that, if you wanted to do the Berkshires. North Adams is a cool town with a great art scene and nearby Williamstown has great restaurants. The Porches Inn is operated by the Mass MoCA so has funky rooms as well as a sauna/massage. Berkshires might be a little busier that time of year depending on foliage.
Hope this helps!
Hold the phone we're having our wedding at a museum. Wedding-moon museum double whammy?? I think we have to??
It does feel like a sign!
Camden, Maine!
Seconding Camden. We did our mini moon there and it was perfection. Alas, our honeymoon was scheduled for March 2020…so that was the only honeymoon we ever got.
Newport is great anytime of the year. Tons to do.
Other option is go to Watch Hill RI. The Ocean House is one of the greatest hotels in the US. Right on the ocean. And nest door to Taylor Swift.
Looking for a weekend getaway with my boyfriend to a VERY Christmas town. Like the type that feels like you walk into a movie with sleigh rides and stuff like that.
I mean you can visit Santa’s Village in Jefferson,NH
Many, many people come to where I live-Kennebunkport Maine for Christmas Prelude. It’s been written up in so many magazines, making it the destination for Christmas! Don’t look for sleigh rides though, that is about the only thing they don’t do-there is trolley rides though 🎄🎅
Woodstock VT, go during Wassail weekend
This is the correct answer
Stockbridge, mass in December when they recreate the Norman Rockwell painting along main street.
Jackson or North Conway, NH
[removed]
Well, you aren’t near it, but my favorite spot maybe anywhere in New England is the Flume in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. And the (even more inconvenient to CT) coast of Maine.
I’m actually headed up to the white mountains from the coast of CT next month. Just googled this place and:
It looks amazing
It’s only 20 minutes from our AirBnb.
Thanks for the suggestion!!
It’s truly breathtaking. Have a great trip!
Where in CT is the wedding?
Ocean House, Chanler Hotel, Mirbeau Plymouth
Ocean House is RI
Chanier Hotel is RI
Mirbeau Plymouth is MA
What’s in CT?
Hartford area. That's as much as I know.
Boston.
Or Providence. There’s so much to do and see in New England, but Connecticut isn’t the best hub for seeing most of it.
What is the name of that seafood buffet
Ooo lots of options…
I’ll get started with the obvious one: Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, and all of the shops around the aquarium.
For food, if you want some classic (ish) New England seafood… I can recommend Lenny and Joe’s. If you want something perhaps slightly more upscale (but not crazy over the top), Old Saybrook Inn has a decent restaurant right on the ocean.
There is also the Essex Steam Train and Gillette Castle nearby. Both are lots of fun but admittedly kinda touristy. If you’re looking for a cool day hike, Devil’s Hopyard is a favorite of mine. That’s slightly more inland, but not crazy far from the shore.
If you want to go for a boat ride, there are numerous ferries that run from southern Connecticut & Rhode Island to Long Island, Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island, etc.
I could come up with more, especially if I go to other places in New England (Cape Cod, for example) but there’s a few random choices around southern Connecticut.
Well New Haven has the best pizza in America. Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana 📍 Modern Apizza 📍 Sally's Apizza If you are going to the ocean house watch hill? They have a great view and awesome beach to walk on that will give you a classic New England feel Mystic is a great visit. https://mysticseaport.org. This is an 18th century whaling village.
Trying to brainstorm an autumn getaway with my husband and a would-be 6 month old. Would be leaving from Poughkeepsie. He likes hiking, I like cute towns. Given the baby situation we would prefer a hotel/resort lodging situation over an Airbnb. Any suggestions?
Lake George, Jim Thorpe or Mystic Connecticut
I second Mystic and Lake George
Berkshires. Great barrington. North Adams. Check out Mass Moca.
Second this. Right across the street from Mass-MOCA is Porches, great place to stay. Plus, the Clark (another great museum) is only one town away.
If you are willing to drive up to 4 hours I’d highly recommend the finger lakes region. I personally love the southern part with Watkins glen as a central point, then branch out to Hammondsport, Corning, and Ithaca. The hiking in the gorges is like nothing else, lots of cute little towns and wineries. I think it’s a highly underrated place to visit.
100% second the finger lakes region. It’s incredible. Watkins Glen is basically as close as you can get to being in the legend of Zelda lol. It also tends to be a little bit quieter in the autumn after all the kids go back to school. There is the finger Lakes cider house, which is awesome. Taughanook falls which is like mega intense etc. Really really beautiful part of New York State.
We did this trip last year with a 2 year old and 5 year old and it was heaven. Kid friendly and beautiful
I was going to say this as well. We took my daughter when she was 5 months and it was great.
When I was in Hammondsport, it struck me as the type of place I would retire if I was like a wealthy doctor or lawyer. Some of the old Victorian homes are absolutely stunning. I think it probably is not the most fun place to grow up as a kid but if somebody with a little bit of money who wants to just escape the world and live in comfort, I can’t imagine a finer place.
It seems like the type of place a writer would live over the winter and produce some like impactful work of literature.
I mean to be fair it also seems like the type of place a writer would live in over a winter in a Stephen King novel and some terrible things would go down, but you know it’s all relative.
Just a quintessential little lake village. I’ve rented a cabin a little ways up the lake by the swiz and just found it very charming.
Watkins glen area!!
I love going up to Lake Placid once or twice a year
