Best Multiplayer Indie Games on Nintendo Switch

Ultimate Chicken Horse

"Ultimate Chicken Horse" is highly recommended as a top indie multiplayer versus game. It is praised for its fun and engaging gameplay, making it a favorite among players who enjoy local multiplayer experiences [1]. The game allows players to build levels as they play, creating a dynamic and unpredictable environment that keeps the competition fresh and exciting.

Towerfall

"Towerfall" is another standout title, especially notable for its inclusion of additional characters in the Switch version. Originally released on the Ouya, it has been well-received for its fast-paced action and cooperative modes [1:1][1:7]. It's a great choice for those looking for both competitive and cooperative play options.

Duck Game

"Duck Game" offers a fast-paced multiplayer experience with 2D combat featuring ducks as characters. It's often compared to "Boomerang Fu" for its speed and intensity, making it a must-buy for fans of quick, competitive matches [1:4][3:2].

Hidden in Plain Sight

This game is celebrated for its unique party game mechanics, offering various modes such as race and battle royale styles. Players find it particularly enjoyable due to its strategic elements and the different roles one can assume during gameplay [1:5][1:9].

Crawl

"Crawl" is highlighted as an incredible indie game where players compete in a dungeon crawler setting. It shines when players are learning the game together, although it can become less enjoyable if players focus too much on optimal strategies [1:10][1:11].

Snipperclips

While not strictly a versus game, "Snipperclips" is frequently recommended for its cooperative gameplay. It involves players working together to solve puzzles, making it a unique and engaging experience for pairs or small groups [2:4][3:7][5:3].

These games represent some of the best indie multiplayer options available on the Nintendo Switch, providing a range of experiences from competitive versus battles to cooperative puzzle-solving. Whether you're looking for intense competition or collaborative challenges, these titles offer something for every type of player.

What is the best indie Multiplayer Versus game to you for Switch?

ORIGINAL POST

I've been playing a lot local multiplayer recently. But I've never been interested in coop games, only versus games.

I'm interested in buying Rubber Bandits. Does anyone here knows if this game runs well on Switch?

Also, what other indie versus games do you recommend? Everyone knows Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Mario Party, but what are the best indie party games?

Here are the indie multiplayer versus games that I have:

Ultimate Chicken Horse: 10/10 (probably the most fun multiplayer game I've ever played, I highly recommend it to play with 3 other people).

Broforce: 9/10 (a great satirical action-platform game with coop mode and also a great versus mode).

Boomerang Fu: 9/10 (fast and fun multiplayer game. Amazing game, but it has only offline multiplayer).

Unspottable: 8.5/10 (another great fast and fun multiplayer game, but it also has only offline multiplayer).

Worms W.M.D: 8/10 (good game, but imo it's not as fun as Worms Battlegrounds, which is not available for Switch. But if you love Worms, this is your best option for Switch).

And these are the indie multiplayer versus games that are on my wishlist:

Extremely interested in buying it

  • Rubber Bandits (it is only $2 now btw)

  • TowerFall

Highly interested in buying it

  • Crawl

  • King of the Hat

Moderately interested in buying it

  • Duck Game

  • Runbow

  • Tricky Towers

Slightly interested in buying it

  • Alpaca Ball: Allstars

  • Knight Squad 2

  • Move or Die: Unleashed

All links here redirects you to the game's page on DekuDeals, where you can see the current price, screenshots, trailer, metacritic score, etc.

What's your opinion about the games mentioned here? Do you have any other recommendation for a great indie multiplayer versus game that have not been mentioned here yet?

They are! The Switch version of Towerfall includes Madeline and >!Badeline!< as playable characters!

DueSeesaw6053 · 1 year ago

I've never played Unspottable, but based on what I can see, they're similar but Hidden in Plain Sight has mode variations instead of location variations.

For examples: there is a race mode where you have to beat the other players but each player has a sniper with one round to try and take out another player. There is also a BR style mode with a shrinking play zone. There's a knights vs ninjas mode where knights protect the king and queen and the ninjas try to kill the king and queen. There's also a mode for snipers vs assassins where each sniper has 3 shots to kill the assassin(s) but it's tough to figure out who is AI and who is real.

It's an amazingly fun party game with low barrier to entry for non-gamers. It's cheaper, to boot!

I will say that Crawl is incredible if everyone is figuring out what is going on at the same time, and incredible if everyone goes all-out and doesn’t take it too seriously, but it absolutely can drag if players start trying to play “optimally” to win. It’s totally possible I’m missing some strategic elements that better balance the game, but some monsters’ abilities to hit-and-run are both very effective and very obnoxious.

Still totally recommend the game though!

They've changed their name a few times so that makes sense; Matt Makes Games > Maddy Makes Games > Extremely OK Games.

Second the recommendation for Towerfall since it's what got me to check out Celeste (same dev). They added 6 player for the Switch release. There's a coop mode as well. Still weird to think this game originally came out on the Ouya...

Best Co-op Games on Switch?

Posted by dad_frogg_7 · in r/NintendoSwitch · 5 months ago

Hi! I have had a Switch for a long time and have a ridiculous amount of games. However, most are single player. I am trying to find more co-op or multiplayer games that I can use to play with my family because it is a big way for me to connect with them (they live in different states). I am constantly finding co-op games on Steam but none of my family has a PC so I’m looking here.

I’m looking for: 1. A compelling narrative (not a deal breaker as long as it isn’t a boring game.) 2. A family-friendly approach, avoiding gore, and any overly disturbing elements because my young siblings or cousins sometimes play too.

Games we’ve enjoyed previously include Stardew Valley, Palia, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Ultimate Chicken Horse, It Takes Two, Disney Dreamlight Valley, and Overcooked.

Co-op Switch game recommendations?

Posted by Hunay_bee · in r/SwitchGames · 4 months ago

Hi! I am looking for some recommendations for Co-op games i can play with my husband using our nintendo switch. My husband didnt really play before but started getting into it just over a year ago. I think what finally got him into it was Super Mario Party - partner party where we could be on the same team. We’re a little disappointed Jambouree doesn’t have partner party.

Really dont have a budget but i think more than $150 is probably too much for a single game.

Games we 10/10 loved:

  • “unravel 2” had good puzzles and we liked that it felt made to be played by 2. The scenery and music were beautiful.
  • “ibb & obb” this one broke our brain at first we hadnt ever seen anything like it. The puzzles were so good.
  • “super mario party” was our entry to playing together. The board was more open for us to choose who would do what to get stars & ally’s.
  • not a nintendo game but we also loved Call of Duty zombies maps “buried” and “nuketown”

Games we thought weren’t bad but not our favorite:

  • “it takes two” storyline of bickering couple was annoying. The clock puzzle was probably my favorite part.
  • “overcooked” felt more like a test of patience and we’d like to stay married lol
  • “luigi’s mansion” was cute just not anything super special

Thanks in advance ☺️

Bread and Fred is a game with penguins and has similar game play mechanics to unravel 2! I havent personally played this one, but have seen gameplay videos.

My mom and I really love platformers. We love Mario Deluxe, Mario Wonder, Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, anything of that sort.

2 player Switch games

Posted by PaleontologistOk6565 · in r/nintendo · 5 months ago

Looking for recommendations for LEGITIMATE 2 player Switch games. I'm talking not the "here, have a joycon and you can help" kind. Of course there's games like Mario Kart and Mario Party, but I'm looking for something more cooperative that I can play with my preteen son. Currently we're limited to a single system and just one set of joycons but would like to hear recommendations for games that require 2 sets of joycons as well.

It Takes Two, Death Squared, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, and Snipperclips.

7 upvotes on reddit
kasugakuuun · 5 months ago

It Takes Two is as even-handed as it gets gameplay-wise! Though if the preteen son would gag at playing a romance story with their parent, OP might want to go for Split Fiction or Brothers from the same developer. (Or even A Way Out, if it's a cuss-friendly household... no judgment.)

Glad OP specified a symmetrical level of control, cuz otherwise I'd have recommend Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Still a great time with two, but the player on Bandana Dee does have a much simpler movelist.

Best asymmetrical Co-op game to play with partner?

Posted by RoughLifeguard6568 · in r/NintendoSwitch2 · 1 month ago

I bought the switch 2 mostly to have an extra option of things to do with my partner.

We already have and played games such as Overcooked AYCE, Moving out 1 & 2, Split fiction, It takes two etc.

Nowadays, many single player games have the option to play with a second player. However the second player has more of a supportive role.

Which of the following have the best 2-Player experience in your opinion and how would you order them from best to worst?

- Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World

- Luigi’s Mansion 3

- DK Bananza

- Super Mario Odyssey

- PAC-MAN WORLD 2 Re-PAC

- Yooka-Replaylee

If there are other games worth playing other than the ones I mentioned please let me know in the comments. Thanks :)

Mario Odyssey had bad co-op. I suspect DK Bananza has bad co-op if it’s anything like Mario Odyssey

Of the rest of those I have only played Luigi’s Mansion 3. It has symmetrical co-op and works very well. But you have to turbo through the intro area in single player.

Thank you :) Yes, I heard that Luigi's Mansion has a great Co-op experience even though it's mainly a single-player game. I guess the only downside compared to the other games mentioned is that it didn't receive any updates for the Switch 2 (neither a free upgrade nor a dedicated SW2 version). But thanks for the info :)

One a lot of people forget about: pikmin 3. The coop is absolutely amazing. Luigis mansion 3 is pretty good as well. Super mario 3d world is also amazing for this. You can play the whole game with 4 players. And mario bros wonder as well.

Oh, yeah, that one has a fantastic co-op campaign, but it’s a bit short. It’s probably about 10% of gameplay time if you also play through the single player on your own. I think Portal 1 comes with it. That’s single player only and about a quarter the length of the single player campaign on Portal 2.

It runs great. I'm not too sure about single system coop. My husband and I both loved the game on PC so much we each bought a copy and played coop that way. Not sharing a screen was really nice. Sharing a screen on PC wasn't too bad although sometimes the jump between one screen to split and back could be a little jarring. Not sure if the Switch is set up the same way.

Looking back at Original Switch Couch Co-op now that the Switch 2 has launched

Posted by KingKaihaku · in r/NintendoSwitch · 2 months ago
post image

Now that the Switch 2 has officially launched I thought it was a good time to look back at the Switch's library of couch co-op titles. I'll list and give a quick review to the titles I own. Please do the same - I'm always looking for a good couch co-op title and I don't think I'm alone.

https://preview.redd.it/i9uvo6yhigdf1.png?width=1590&format=png&auto=webp&s=423070dcc4f0da8b64b70d3a4c42f1923177954d

3+ Players

  • Collection of Mana: The classics are just as good as ever. SoM is 3 Player but ToM is sadly 2 player. The old ToM fan translation has a three player patch and it's sad the effort wasn't made here.
  • Nine Parchments: Looks like a simple Diablo clone but plays like a dual stick shooter. Fun and chaotic, but has some fearsome challenge spikes especially with kids.
  • Tales of Vesperia: Multiplayer is great in combat. Pacing outside of combat not as great.
  • Super Mario Wonder: It's fantastic and brings a fresh approach to 2D Mario...but is very fast paced and it's easy for a skilled player to leave the littles behind despite the easy mode options. When everyone is close to the same skill level this is a blast. 3D World is a little better for mixed skill levels.
  • Super Mario 3D World: Still my favorite competitive co-op platformer though, certainly, Wonder surpasses it in spectacle. Especially with players of mixed skill levels. Movement speed feels off compared to the Wii U version but otherwise it's still a fantastic game.
  • Mario Maker 2: If you're somewhat decent at making or finding levels this can basically replace New Super Mario Brothers series (we have NSMBU on the Wii U and didn't buy it again). I wish it were a bit more fluid to set-up but it's a ton of fun in play...if the levels are decent.
  • Kirby Star Allies: This is a straightforward and somewhat boring Kirby title in single player... It was clearly designed for multiplayer and is a lot more fun once there's a few people on couch co-op.
  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance III Black Order: This one was a disappointment to me. It's fine...but is dumbed down from previous entries in the series. There's still fun to be had here but it's missing the depth of progression and customization of older titles.
  • Overcooked 2: Very fun, fast paced co-op game. We don't play it as much as I thought we would but I don't think that's a mark against the game.
  • Bish Bash Bots: It's tower defense with full couch co-op... What's not to love? We love this one but it has some intense challenge spikes...especially if you're playing with less than 3 people.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge: Gold star. Top tier. I'm not a big TMNT fan but this is the co-op beat'em'up. We played the Capcom Dungeons & Dragons games into the ground on the Wii U and this has replaced them as our beat'em'up of choice. Looking forward to Marvel Invasion from the same devs later this year.
  • For the King: This is a very awkward to play game that, despite it all, we had a blast playing anyway. If they cleaned up the UI and improved the QoL, I think this would be a top tier co-op title.

https://preview.redd.it/j5t9xtodfgdf1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3eb4209f5700d9ccf68df00fd88445cc2bf256aa

2 Players

  • Starlink - Battle for Atlas: I got this for the bonus Star Fox content, like everyone else, only to discover that it had split screen co-op. Multiplayer is a game changer for this one and makes it a lot more engaging. The elemental combo system really opens up with two ships going at it.
  • Lego City Undercover: We loved this in single player on Wii U but wouldn't have gotten it again if not for the co-op. The open world is particularly fun in split screen.
  • Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes: The local co-op is a little awkward to set-up but goodness is it fun to play. The combination of Musou and Fire Emblem mechanics creates one of my favorite Action RPG gameplay flows. Unlike the original Fire Emblem Warriors, this one has a fantastic narrative that's fun to explore with a buddy. I just wish it had three player co-op.
  • Pokemon - Let's Go Eevee: The co-op doesn't really add much but my kids like it so it's good enough.
  • Pikmin 4: The co-op is a step down from Pikmin 3 (which was fantastic). It went from a top tier co-op experience to basically co-pilot mode.
  • Untitled Goose Game: Goodness this game is a blast. In single player and in co-op. I just wish there was more of it.
  • Cat Quest II: Very fun action RPG for younger players or a parent/child. The story is nothing to write home about but the cat/dog puns and quirky worldbuilding are entertaining enough to keep an adult on board. The combat is just deep enough to be engaged while still being accessible to little ones.
  • Minecraft: It's Minecraft on a console. It's a little complicated to set-up but fun to play in co-op. Honestly though...it just makes me wish that Dragon Quest Builders had local co-op.
  • Terraria: It's Terraria on a console. We played it into the ground on the Wii U and still enjoy playing it on the Switch.
  • Degrees of Separation: Fun and beautiful puzzle platformer for two players.

Has co-op but we haven't tried co-op yet

  • Borderlands II: I got this for local co-op but I usually play with my kids and they're too young for it so still haven't actually played it in co-op.
  • Barony: I got this for local co-op but it crashes...pretty often...for us. So that's been disappointing.
  • Sea of Stars: We just need to circle back to this one now that the local co-op patch landed. Looking forward to it.
  • Wildermyth: Love this on PC... Wouldn't have gotten it again except for the addition of the local co-op mode. But this port had some major performance issues and crashes on release. Need to try again after the latest patch.
  • Stardew Valley: Love this on PC. Got it for the local co-op mode but haven't gotten around to starting a farm together yet. Definitely will.
  • Mario Odyssey: Love the game but this kind of co-op doesn't have much appeal for us. For playing a platformer co-op with little ones we'll do Yoshi's Wooly World on the Wii U or Super Mario 3D World instead.
  • Diablo III: I got this for local co-op but I usually play with my kids and they're too young for it so still haven't actually played it in co-op.
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris 2: It has a co-op mode but we've never touched it. The competitive modes are the draw here, at least for us.

Technically have co-op but lean more competitive in my experience

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: It's a fantastic game in general and it has team based co-op... But for us it usually it either goes competitive with players on the same skill level or carry for players at lower skill levels.
  • Smash Brothers Ultimate: It's a fantastic game in general and it has co-op, but it usually leans competitive for us.
  • Mario Party Jamboree: It's a fantastic game in general but its co-op is more like a temporary truce. This is a competitive game.

For me, the Switch is my go-to platformer for JRPGs, Nintendo exclusives, and couch co-op. I go with Steam for just about everything else. So we play a lot of couch co-op across many genres and are always looking for more.

Portal and Portal 2 - both have Co-Op puzzle solving on Switch. I purchased it there despite owning it on Steam when neither love nor money would get Windows to read multiple controllers for co-op. Shocker - the Switch had us up and playing in seconds!

Chippy&Noppo - Couch co-op Lego building with platforming in rotating isometric 3D. Fun.

Taiko no Tatsujin - Multiplayer taiko drum action, either with joycons or the usb drum controller

Snipperclips - Still haven’t played it, but it was the launch coop title

Luigi’s Mansion 3 - Haven’t tried the campaign coop yet but conceptually it looks like it would work

Astral Chain - AVOID CO-OP. Nintendo clearly forced them to add co-op as a near launch title, and it is a dog. Instantly turns a fun game into a horrible frustrating slog.

SnipperClips and Luigi’s Mansion 3 are two of the best. SC is built entirely for co-op and LM3 might as well be.

LM3 is one of our favorites. It's nice for me with my shorter attention span because I can drop in and out as Gooigi as I feel like it. It does have quite a bit of lead up before you unlock Gooigi though

Just a little note, I don’t think Portal 1 has co-op. Portal 2 does tho.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 coop is the best way to play it. It fixes all the pacing issues people have with it in single player because you can clear rooms ~twice as fast. It was the best coop experience I have had with my wife by far.

Yes my kids absolutely love the coop. Works great with an older sibling and younger sibling who can't die as gooigi

It Takes Two is great. And I'm having a blast playing Split Fiction, which they just released (Switch 2 though).

Sorry to hear Barony crashes for you. Barony is one of my favorite games on the switch and i havent done any multiplayer yet. It is so underrated.

Play it co-op with my two sons quite often and never get any crashes, but we each own a copy rather than play splitscreen.

Fantastic game solo and even more fun co-op, worth a try!

Thanks for noting - if it's not a bad port then it must be something on my end. I'll try moving it from SD to internal memory since that's the only thing I can think of. That's helped with some other games

Looking for indie games (already have tons of AAA’s) to play with the girlfriend. Willing to try any genre of game. Any recommendations?

For a hilarious and dexterous time I would snag Heave-Ho! My wife and I play it from time to time and it always makes us laugh like crazy. It’s physics based and requires some thought on several levels with multiple ways to complete each level. Lots of custom character pieces to make ridiculous characters. I like supporting smaller Indie companies and Le Cartel Studio made a great little game with this one.
