Hi all! I’m moving to NYC soon for work (office in Midtown) and looking for advice on where to live.
I have a small dog, so being near a park would be great. I’m in my early 30s, gay, and looking for a neighborhood that’s fun and social but not super party-heavy, I’m cutting back on drinking and would love a more balanced vibe.
I’ve enjoyed Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, and parts of Brooklyn when visiting, but curious what they’re like to actually live in. Astoria has come up too, but I’m less familiar. (ChatGTP told me I’d like Astoria lol that’s my only point of reference for that neighborhood)
Any recommendations for neighborhoods that are dog-friendly, LGBTQ+ inclusive, and good for someone who wants a mix of calm, community, and access to the city?
Thank you for any advice!
Where in midtown will you be working? That is a crucial variable. e.g. midtown east is much harder to get to vs. midtown west since Times Square basically has all the subway lines going through it.
Unless there is a direct subway line from Astoria to your office I would recommend against it. My friend lives there but she doesn't work in Manhattan and usually takes an uber into the city which I doubt you want to do everyday.
That’s valid, central midtown? Is that a thing? By the Empire State Building
Hah, no we don't really call it that. That's kind of a weird area. Fifth ave and east is "east side" and this is smack in the middle.
So I'll say this: I wouldn't recommend Astoria but if you're working near Empire State, you proably could make it work as long as you live close to the N line in Queens, since it does go to 6th and 34th (though the crosstown 6th to 5th ave walk is one of the longer blocks in NYC FYI).
>neighborhoods that are dog-friendly, LGBTQ+ inclusive, and good for someone who wants a mix of calm, community, and access to the city
Given what you say here though, I (and I'm biased since I spent a lot of time living there) would be Upper West Side. It's more chill than midtown..... wider streets esp west end ave and broadway..... lots of dogs and families but you also see gay couples walking hand in hand.
It's not a gay hub like HK or Chelsea used to be..... but there all the bars and restaurants are very LGBT friendly.
You have Central Park on one side and Riverside Park on the other (much under rated and lesser known). It's quieter on the west side by Riverside Park.....only thing is subway wise, to get to 6th ave you need the B/D line on CPW. I prefer the western part of UWS closer to the 1/2/3 line which you can do but you would have to transfer to the N/R for 1 stop or just walk from 7th ave over.
Based on what you said, I think you'd really like the Upper West Side. The access to the parks is a godsend, especially if you have dogs. It's not dead by any means, but it's not a nightlife hub at all, and there's a lot of families around which gives it a much more relaxed vibe. You'll have easy access to Midtown for work as well, and if you do want to occasionally have some fun, Hell's Kitchen isn't far.
I will disclaim that I don't know Brooklyn or Queens particularly well because I'm a basic Manhattan bitch that never leaves, but friends who live there tend to always say good things.
Greenpoint, LIC, east Williamsburg are all good Brooklyn based options too. Being on the L is great, and lots of good stops in between here and Manhattan. Not too bad of a commute from BK to Midtown East too. More green space in BK, coming from someone who’s been in bk for 4-5 years after about 6-7 in Manhattan
Your work is pretty centrally located, which opens up lots of possibilities for you. Upper East and Upper West sides are both generally more chill, as are parts north. If you want a bigger visible queer presence, they might not bring that vibe for you, though. I never lived in Queens so can’t be much help there. Hell’s Kitchen seems like a nightmare to live in, by comparison, if you’re moving away from that drinking/nightlife culture.
For me personally, I’d juggle the length of my commute I wanted (aka extra time away from pup) and rent I could afford, alongside the other considerations you’ve listed. Since I also have a little pup, I’d also mention here that many of the dog parks/runs in the city are mixed size runs (large and small dogs together), which can be a challenge for small dog owners.
While different neighborhoods (and even streets within neighborhoods) have their own vibes, the city is fluid and connected enough that you can find what you’re looking for without going too far.
Feel free to send me a message if I can help with any more specific questions. If not, good luck with your move!
let me preface this with i’m sooo sorry if this is a dumb question, and it probably is, but ive only ever lived in small towns
going to be in nyc for a while, and am wondering where the parties/nightlife are? i’m 18 so i won’t be able to get into any 21+ places, but I was wondering if there was anywhere solid for people my age? anything to do? i’d like to meet people and have fun! preferably younger scenes as i am afraid of creeps lol. raves are ok too 👍
I'm not into the party lifestyle anymore, but my friends who are speak highly of the app RA Guide; we used it to find karaoke in Berlin. Not sure how great it is for NYC, but worth checking out.
Search the r/avesNYC sub for 18+ parties or venue suggestions!
For shows: SOBs, Bowery Ballroom, Mercury Lounge, Elsewhere, Fat Cat, Arlene's Grocery, Webster Hall, Trans Pecos, Property is Theft are just some of the venues that have all ages shows (gotta check their websites to confirm).

Welcome 🙌
thank you so much!

Hey, I’m visiting NYC for the first time and planning to check out Hell’s Kitchen tonight. Looking for recommendations on good spots—something with decent vibes, good music, maybe a dark room if that’s around. Trying to figure out where to go and have a solid night out would appreciate any recs
I saw some flyers for red eye throwing a party called Dungeon. Live DJ and I’m 95% sure there is a dark room there. I think there is a small cover tho ~5-10 bucks. I think that’s where my gaggle of gays is gonna be tonight
🙏🙏🙏
Hi! Im also in nyc, and wanted to experience the scene. Lemme know what you did last night 🫡
Was a cute night! Started at the Eagle beer blast then headed to Red Eye around 9:30PM for their dungeon party. Stayed until 1ish, good dance floor / dark room vibe. Staff said both events happen every week or so, would recommend
Great, thanks!
Anything for tonight?
I like to go out sometimes on the weekends go to club and dance, got a bar and drink, even get some phone# from girls and have a good time. I'm just curious really that's it and where?
Dykman/inwood
I just be on the block but Strip clubs for queens tho🔥
Strip clubs are 💩
Everybody different, shit was fun when i went🔥
Mark my words yung bulls, when ya get older get ya passports and explore the world. The royalty treatment and the amount of pussy you can get in certain places just for having an American passport is ridiculous, u won't even want to know about NYC after u visit places like Jamaica, Ghana, Nigeria, Colombia, Brazil, DR, Costa Rica, Panama, etc.
Seeing how cheap flights r rn vs how much u would spend in a night in a club it just makes sense too take a trip for a extra few hundred
U aint neva lie mah guy!! Im headed to Colombia in a few, one of my favorite travel destinations eva bro, 1 of the countries with most beautiful and feminine women eva, they treat u like a king over there

Going to be in town with a few friends between 1/16 and 1/20 and am hoping to get some suggestions for bars and night life while we’re there. We are all late 20s, female/AFAB and majority queer, so need to be LGBTQ+ friendly (although doesn’t necessarily have to be a gay bar.) We are staying near Times Square but absolutely willing to travel reasonable distances. Will definitely be checking out the Greenwich Village and Hell’s Kitchen areas. Hoping to find some spots that are more on the casual/relaxed side with or without dancing. It’ll be most of our first times in the city so thank you in advance for helping some clueless tourists out!
jungle bird in chelsea is a queer/woman owned cocktail bar! and given it's chelsea which is very gay in general, it should be fun.
Jungle Bird and Cubbyhole are both great options.
Karaoke in the East Village
My friends and I are doing a spontaneous weekend trip to NYC in two weeks. What are some spots (well known or underground) that we have to check out? We love hip/hop, house, and techno! Thanks :)
For an outsider visiting, I would definitely recommend House or Yes, Elsewhere, Nowadays
Elsewhere, Nowadays
house of yes, bossa nova
Avant Gardner is the big venue in the city that will have more well known artists performing. Elsewhere is a smaller slightly more underground version of that. House of Yes is a ton of fun where the focus is as much on the costumes/vibe as it is the music. The other places folks are mentioning (Pumps is a strip club FYI) are fun too.
Visiting NYC/Brooklyn from July 23-30 and was wondering if there are fun places for a solo visitor to go to during the weekends or even weeknights. I'm sure there are lots of great places but sometimes going solo is different versus with a friend group. And weekend crowds are different from weekdays.
Also I'm in my early 30s and I'm down for anything. Doesn't even have to be sex related haha but I just put that out there because I've never been to one and have always been curious about going and have a pretty open mind. As far as looks- I'm tatted and have body hair. And I tend to like guys who are scruffy/tatted/fit like myself. But I know many guys don't like that look or find it repulsive 😂 (but to each its own no judgments here). So any spots that attracts those types of guys would be awesome too (but definitely not a requirement).
Either way, I'm looking to have a great time and to be social 😁 I'm also not trying to be bound to one location and open to venturing out to other burroughs/neighborhood. There is truly so much to explore in NYC.
The Eagle might be a good fit. Jockstrap Wednesdays are very socia and sexy. Sunday Beer Blast is a casual and social hang on the rooftop deck. I think you could have fun and meet people as a solo person at both these events. It turns into a huge dance party on Friday and Saturdays, which is very fun (and upstairs still remains cruisy) but if you are looking to strike up a conversation with someone (as opposed to just dancing and making out with them haha) then it would be more difficult those nights.
Love it!! Both sound fun 😜 thanks!!
been to the Eagle solo a few times during their Jockstrap Wednesdays and despite me being asian and on the chubbier side, I managed to have a lot of fun! I think it’s a good fit for you
Go to eagle on a Wednesday. That’s a good time. I feel like that’s a good spot to go solo.
Also, just curious if anyone has ever been to any of the GBU parties? Do they tend to attract a certain crowd or more mixed/diverse?
https://wickedgayparties.com/ has listings for many sex parties and there’s also https://gaysexinnyc.wordpress.com/
Thanks! I'll have to check those out
