TL;DR Popular choices include Moleskine, Leuchtturm 1917, Rhodia, and Midori MD. Consider your writing tools (e.g., fountain pens or pencils) when selecting a notebook.
Moleskine
Moleskine notebooks are frequently mentioned as favorites due to their classic feel and versatility. They are praised for their aesthetic appeal and are available in various sizes and formats [1:1]
[1:6]. However, some users have noted a decline in paper quality over time
[1:3]. Despite this, Moleskine remains a popular choice for many who prefer biro and pencil
[1:6].
Leuchtturm 1917
Leuchtturm 1917 is another highly recommended notebook, particularly for its durability and high-quality paper. The hardcover A5 version is favored by those who appreciate a sturdy notebook that can withstand regular use [3:4]. Users also enjoy the flexibility of different cover designs and customizable options
[3:10].
Rhodia
Rhodia notebooks are well-regarded for their excellent paper quality, especially among those who use fountain pens. The spiral-bound type is popular for work notes, and many users pair them with leather covers for added durability [1:3]. Rhodia's paper is often compared to Clairefontaine, which is known for its smooth texture
[3:2].
Midori MD
Midori MD notebooks are praised for their minimal design and high-quality paper that works well with both pencils and fountain pens [2:2]
[3:5]. Although their soft cardboard covers may require extra care or customization, they offer a unique aesthetic appeal
[3:7].
Budget Options
For those seeking budget-friendly options, Muji and Daiso notebooks provide good value for their price. Muji offers smooth paper suitable for pencils, while Daiso provides affordable alternatives with comparable quality to more expensive Japanese-made notebooks [2:4]
[2:5]. Decomposition notebooks are also mentioned for their recycled paper and reasonable price
[2:6].
When choosing a notebook, consider the type of writing instrument you plan to use, as some papers handle fountain pen ink better than others. Additionally, think about the size and portability of the notebook if you intend to use it on the go.
I don't have one! I'm really picky and haven't found anything I super love.
I probably enjoyed GLP Creations The Author notebook best for longform journaling.
For planners I enjoyed my Hobonichi Techo A6 but not enough to purchase again without trying out some different ones first.
For pens I've enjoyed Micron 05 best.
Do you have a #1 favorite? Favorites in categories? Favorite pens/pencils/decorations to use in them if you do?
I really like the Paperage! high quality of paper, it's also quite thick which I love, the price is very low for this quality so i am making sure to stock up on this in case they ever run out!
edit: if you finding problems finding it on amazon, it's the number 3 item on this list here: https://pincara.com/best-journal-notebooks/
Jesus fucking Christ these bots are everywhere. Reported. Blocked. Move on.
My go to every day notebooks and pads are Rhodia. I use the spiral bound type for work notes. My every day Rhodia journal I have it in a Gfeller leather cover that has aged beautifully over the years. I use to use moleskin but the paper quality wen way down hill and varied so much from notebook to notebook.
i genuinely like the damn moleskine. i know it's not cool, but it feels "right" to me. also a HUGE fan of the Story Supply pocket notebooks. I don't use fountain pens, i know that's a thing for many people and affects what books they prefer.
I love Moleskines - all shapes and sizes. I only use biro and pencil so they work well for me.
I'm also a moleskine fan! They get a lot of hate, but something about them just feels so classic to me.
Mnemosyne N195a used with fountain pens and a Galen leather A5 leather folio
The paper in the mnemosyne notebooks are surprisingly good for fountain pens, but I wish they had more format variety (like blank or dotted). The header margins take up a lot of page real estate.
Lately, I’ve been obsessing over my Leuchtturm B6 size softcover blank notebooks. They’re small enough to fit inside my leather 10-slot fountain pen case and kinda perfect for composing poetry and song verses. The A5 Leuchtturm softcovers are also cool and I use them for most of my various prose work. But I have also been enjoying writing prose on my Quo Vadis Habana notebook which uses Clairefontaine paper and also on my tomoe river notebook, which has Bible thin paper but surprisingly smooth and resilient, my Pilot Iroshizuku take-sumi black ink looks gorgeous on it (but my Noodler’s Black Swan in Australian Rose takes damn near forever to dry it is SO wet).
I can’t speak on blank, but they definitely have dotted rules notebooks. I have two that will be arriving tomorrow! The header works well for my organization style, but everyone is different. I’ve tried others but these suit me best
I love the basic moleskin in my gear gallery: https://mygeargallery.com/collections/notebooks
My favorite is one my partner got me that was custom made from a local shop, but my everyday ones are moleskin.
I've been wondering what is the best commonly available and affordable notebook or journal brand that works really nice with pencils specifically. Any notes on this? (Pun very much intended).
I like Midori MD. It's the only notebook I found that is toothy enough for pencils but can handle fountain pens and wet pens well too.
Yep. Great texture for pencils and good price.
For me, the moleskein cahier journal for their texture; most notebooks i find a bit too smooth on pencil. Easy to find locally and online. It’s not the cheapest, but reasonable when you look at price per page.
As someone who started with one of these, rollerballs and fountain pens aren't good with them.
Another thing, you could get a binder(or refillable notebook, I've seen people call them either name) and a lot of papers for cheaper than moleskines.
The "Bind Grid Notebook" from Muji is great. Smooth paper with just enough tooth for pleasant pencil writing, inexpensive.
Along with Muji notebooks - I also like Daiso notebooks a lot - the ones made in Japan, as they might have ones made elsewhere in SE Asia from companies like Bazic depending on their stock at the time. Comparable to other Japanese made notebooks which can be more expensive, but in the US they start at 1.75 USD.
Totally was gonna recommend checking out Daiso!
Have you tried Decomposition notebooks? They’re quite cheap, and the recycled paper works just fine for pencils. Not super durable because they have cardboard covers.
Other notebooks that offer good price per area include the Levenger Notabilia, Fabriano EcoQua, Stalogy 365 A5, and Penco A5. They’re all fine for pencils, the Stalogy being the smoothest (good for Blackwings). Personally I like the tooth in Fabriano paper best. The polypropylene cover on the Penco notebooks is flexible and durable.
The rock paper notebooks? If so,I'd advise against it since the pages kinda melt or something.
I don't think we're talking about the same thing. Karst makes the stone paper notebooks, and I've been tempted by them but haven't tried one yet; they're expensive and fountain pen folks say they can wear down nibs. They feel super smooth, though. Someday I'm sure I'll get around to trying them and seeing how pencils behave.
Lately, the search for notebooks is afoot and cannot find a highly esteemed notebook that isn’t a weekly planner or one filled with lines. It’s meant to be used for hobbies, random topics, and food critique although it may be a lot to fill for one notebook. MUJI notebooks is a good selection but not sure about the quality and durability of the it. Are there any high quality notebooks for a reasonable price?
Clairefontaine age bag, midori notebooks... i like Muji notebooks. excellent price value
+1 for Clairefontaine Age Bag. Just order a bunch of Amazon, lovely paper for around 5 pounds for 192 pages. My new go to notebook.
I’m not sure about the Midori notebooks since they don’t have covers on them but am curious about Calirefontaine age bag. 😄
I hear you about the Midori MD (A5) not having a fancy cover but with a little wear they do look cool. My other favs are the Dingbats (A5) and Quo Vadis Habana (B5, in blank or ruled).
Midori md is great. Minimal, but great paper. And there is super fancy cover from thin leather, or "paper" one.
Oh wow that’s interesting about the Midori covers being customizable also hearing the other journals with flexible cover designs too. This has piqued my interest and will looking into it further. ☺️
Personally I’d say Leuchtturm 1917, harcover, A5. I like the rhodia/clairefontaines, but I find their paper much to “coaty” for my taste. Midoris are really nice, good paper, nice design, but their covers being soft cardbosrd they end up wrecked unless you are careful.
Midori sells plastic covers for their notebooks, but they are expensive, so what I do with my midoris y wrap them with a thickish wrapping paper, which helps protect the notebook itself while at the same time improving its looks.
If you’re looking for durability, check out our Tuk Books. They were built to take a beating.
If you are looking for something a bit more “normal”, I like Leuchtturm.
Thank you for the advice! Does Turk Books pages bleed when using ink? Also how versatile are the designs?
We always recommend using a ballpoint pen for Tuk Books, and with those there is very little if any bleed through. As far as the designs, there are 4 (soon to be 5) current designs. We do plan to introduce some additional ones soon, too.

Thanks!
I use the basic moleskin: https://mygeargallery.com/collections/notebooks
Etsy has some cool ones as well.
These are some notepads I’ve made! The paper is pretty soft and smooth- a lot of my writer friends love them for taking notes on characters and plot points! A lot of the pens I’ve personally used on the paper glide super easily!
Tell me you didn't read rule 3 without telling me you didn't read rule 3
Hi! I did read rule three- it said links to things like Etsy are okay in the comments or in the main text of the post. I’m sorry if I misunderstood it!

"Oops" -ayummystrawberry
AHAHAHAH I was so confused I was like,, did I read the rule wrong???
how fun!! if i’d definitely grab one for a friend who really enjoys halloween if I saw this at target or something
I love the Halloween theme and the fact that the colour of the dots match the page theme colours! :) very satisfying
Thank you!!!
How did you get the bottom edges to not curl up? I’m having issues with mine doing that.
Books on top while the glue sets!
Hello, r/notebooks !
I am going to be wprking as a research student this summer and am really excited to learn as much as possible. I think I'm going to be doing a lot of travelling to and from farms and working on farms, as well as working in the lab and performing data analysis. I want to be abel to take notes quickly, on the go, and although they seem very practical, I can't stand those tiny little "flip" notepads that can fit in your pocket. I'm looking for something a little bigger and more sturdy, but still cheap and portable.
If anyone has had an experience similar to this, or just has anything they want to say, I'm all ears! I am a stationery addict at heart and would love to hear everyone's different opinions. Thank you!
I like the Traveler's Notebook System, the actual Midori cover and notebooks are definitely not cheap, but you can get knockoffs (referred to as "fauxdoris") on Amazon for $10 or so and refills something like 3 for $10.
You can also go with knockoffs of Field Notes - there's a brand called Field Book that sells 5-packs for $10 on Amazon. The paper isn't good for fountain pens, but if you're using gel pens or ballpoints, it's fine.
I haven't used them, but there was recently a lengthy segment on the Pen Addict about Write Notepads. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "flip" notepads, but this one is 4" x 8" so it can be held in your hand for on the go notes and stuff, but is still bigger than your traditional pocket notebook.
Hope this helps!
Thanks! & yeah I guess it isn't the up-down flip I'm opposed to (rather than side to side like a book), it's the small size. So thanks, I will check those out for sure!
I just found out about these notebooks and I am in love. They look rugged, basic (which I love) but most of all, look at the gridline pattern–it's awesome.
Also, I buy these in bulk. They're cheap and they're good. If I lose one, I don't really care. I mean, yeah, I'll miss the notes, but the thing only cost about $1.50 so I don't lament the cost. Cheap is important because it gives you the agency to be very creative without worrying about ruining a page in a $30 notebook. The guy is a great craftsman.

Do you ever use fountain pens or highlighters in them? Curious about whether they'd bleed through
I write with a Vanishing Point or a Metro. Never highlighted in them, but the fountain pens do ok. I use a medium nib and haven't had a bleed-through problem.
Yeah I have a thing for buying beautiful books and then taking forever to fill them b/c my regular notes aren't 'good enough' for the nice notebook. So thanks for this, fingers crossed they ship to Canada!
This is me. This comment is so very much me.
Try Rite in the Rain notebooks. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes but are made for field work (meaning they can get dirty and it won't effect your writing).
I bought one thinking I'd need it for work. (i was wet plenty). and I still like the moleskin notebooks better, but yeah they don't like water so much...
FYI, pencil will not erase in these notebooks, but other than that, Rite in the Rain was my immediate thought as well.
I’m a long-standing member of the “buying notebooks but never using them because in the moment it needs to be special” club, even though I function better when I organize my thoughts on paper. Cheap spiral notebooks sometimes work, but not always.
BUT THEN I got a random hand-me-down box with some office supplies, including a stack of legal pads, and they are amazing! I think it’s because they don’t have a cover, you can’t “close” them? So I don’t get hung up on the whole thing needing to be for one topic or purpose. I can put grocery lists, random ideas, reminders, all that stuff down on paper, out of my head, but they’re still collected together on the pad instead of the back of an envelope floating who knows where around the house, while ALSO not “spoiling” my pretty notebooks!
Hooray for legal pads!
Yes!! I also love some 4x6 lined sticky notes 🤌
You’ve got my two favorite office items right here
I once read somewhere that yellow legal pads were the preferred writing pad of a writer I liked(can't remember who), so I bought a few.
They're still sat in a drawer. Perhaps I'll dig them out.
Yes i love my legal pads!
I personally can't stand them because the pages inevitably get wrinkled/edges folded torn and work etc which makes me crazy
I can see that!
I loved legal pads when I did my master’s program. I also used and continue to use the 9.5” x 6” hilroy coil notebooks. They’re a little crappy and scrappy, and they easily fit in my purse. I fill them completely. I often have more than one on the go. I used legal pads a lot at my job as an executive director - it was helpful to be able to flip back and forth between days of tasks and notes. Anyway- love the vibe of non-special totally functional stationary. I also love a fancy hardcover notebook but I just don’t use them up the same way. 🤷♀️
Hey all! :)
Ive been using these rip off 3x5 notepads for a while - while they are great, I find it easy to lose track of them once I tear a page off.
I'm looking for a replacement in notebook form!
Something with:
-Peace of mind that I won't lose individual pages/notes. Thoughts are so important!!!
-pocket size, I like to carry it with me instead of my phone
- preferably blank or lined, simple stuff.
- preferably not too expensive - as I go through a lot of them!
Really just looking for portability and reliability.
I LOVE REDDIT FOR THINGS LIKE THIS - thank you all in advance!
Will
Field Notes! They're my favorite pocket notebook brand! They're 3.5 x 5.5 so slightly bigger than what you were using. They hold up well and have so many different pretty covers. Keep in mind they are on the pricey side- but good quality! They have grid, lined, blank, and dot grid!
If not because they may be out of your budget- check Amazon! Just search "pocket notebook" and they have plenty of cheap options with plenty in one pack!
Yes! They are really nice quality and have lots of different designs you can pick from! They have more on their actual website as well!

Rhodia, great paper, super cheap
Looking at it now - seems like a great pick- thanks!
Muji might have something that works well for this!
Nice! Found their website :)
I am just going to use it for writing notes, memos, reminders ( not for drawing). Appreciate if you guys could provide some input
I love my reMarkable 2 it has just the right amount of friction, making it feel like I'm writing on actual paper.
I also own a Remarkable 2, and it's the only device I've used that truly feels like writing on paper.
I LOVE the RM2 as a note taker, journal, client note for my coaching, and reading PUB files of books.
However there is no “alarm” capabilities for reminders. RM2 is basically the same as a regular notebook. You want a place to take notes. This is it. You want an alert? Nope.
Thanks for your response. Ideally I am looking to replace my A4 size paper notepad, so interested in something with the same writing feel and size.
Supernote A6 X2 is in pre-order and you may be interested in the smaller size. But check out www.ewritable.com for all the devices out there, and see if you can narrow down some of the other pressures you might need.
I am looking for a digital notebook that will replace my a4 paper notepad. I dont want to type, but want to write my notes ( like pen and paper). Appreciate your response
Ah then you definitely want something larger lol. I don't know too much about 13" tablets, which seems like the right size for you, but you can look at all the info on the site I linked
I was just on their website and couldn’t find anything about the pre-order status
It's now in production and order fulfillment times are normal
Remarkable 2 is the way to go. LOVE it. I have not written on any piece of paper or paper notebook. This is the best.
Does it require the description or does it work fine without?
I see a lot of brands I’ve never heard of on this sub
Looking to handwrite some short stories with a fountain pen - a leuchtturm is usually my go to for the paper quality
What’s your favourite brand? Any I should check out?
stalogy, life/life noble, & muji are my favorites. i got a pack of 6 unbranded notebooks similar-ish to field notes from amazon for $10 that i really enjoy, too. i write exclusively with fountain pens.
Oo do you have a link for those field notes dupes by any chance?? They dont bleed wirh your fountain pens any?
absolutely! happy to help other fp users! and no, i’ve been using one for stream of consciousness journaling & using m, b, & bb nibs with zero issues. they’re not exactly field notes size (i think?) but they are a tad smaller than my typical a6 books; they’re listed as a6. best quality for the price that i’ve found so far!
i got grid paper for mine. they’ve got sewn binding & a simple kraft cover for easy customization. really pleased with ‘em thus far. :-)
You hit it on the head. Leuchtturm is the standard for the type of writing you want to do. I use a 1917 for my story manuscript and it's literally amazing. Midori paper is pretty good and I enjoy their notebooks.
1917 is currently my gold standard. It's not perfect, but it's damn near close. Decent build, decent paper, good dimensions, usual features. Having given a dozen or so other market offerings for A5, I'm pretty much no longer looking at anything else.
Picture this: I started last year with the Hobonichi Cousins (A5) and eventually purchased my first 1917 (after some heavy social media advertising) and I haven't looked back since. The quality in my opinion is unmatched. I'm not even opposed to it having a hard cover! I love the large amount of expressive colors. Yeah, you're in good hands if you're already writing in that.
I love it too. It's literally amazing.
Have you ever seen the Monocle notebook in stores? I haven't been able to find it b
Currently it’s Midori :)
This is mine! The paper is a bit thinner but feels sooooo smooth - downright frictionless - and doesn’t bleed easily. I personally just like the paperback/square corners and feel of Midori over Leuchtturm but that mostly comes down to personal preference!
I bought an Olpr cover and it came with a midori blank book and it’s been so amazing for me!
Midori has my heart currently. Also into Maruman MNEMOSYNE.
Best notebooks for handwritten notes
Key Considerations for Choosing Notebooks for Handwritten Notes
Paper Quality: Look for notebooks with thick, smooth paper to prevent ink bleed-through and ensure a pleasant writing experience. Acid-free paper is also a good choice for longevity.
Binding Type: Consider whether you prefer spiral-bound, stitched, or glued bindings. Spiral-bound notebooks lay flat and are easy to flip through, while stitched or glued bindings can offer a more polished look.
Size: Choose a size that fits your needs. Common sizes include A5 (5.8 x 8.3 inches) for portability and A4 (8.3 x 11.7 inches) for more writing space.
Page Layout: Decide on the type of page layout that suits your style—lined, dotted, grid, or blank. Dotted pages are popular for bullet journaling, while lined pages are great for traditional note-taking.
Cover Material: A durable cover (like leather or thick cardstock) can protect your notes and withstand wear and tear, especially if you carry it around frequently.
Recommendations:
Leuchtturm1917: Known for its high-quality paper and variety of layouts (dotted, lined, etc.), this notebook is great for both note-taking and journaling. It also features numbered pages and an index for organization.
Moleskine Classic Notebook: A classic choice with a sleek design, Moleskine notebooks have smooth paper and come in various sizes. They are ideal for those who appreciate a minimalist aesthetic.
Rhodia Webnotebook: With exceptionally smooth paper and a sturdy cover, Rhodia notebooks are perfect for fountain pen users. The paper is designed to handle ink beautifully without bleed-through.
Rocketbook: If you're looking for a tech-savvy option, the Rocketbook allows you to write notes by hand and then scan them to your device. The pages can be wiped clean for reuse, making it eco-friendly.
Choosing the right notebook ultimately depends on your personal preferences and how you plan to use it. Consider trying a few different types to see what feels best for your handwriting style!
