Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When shopping online for furniture, it's important to read product descriptions carefully and understand return policies. Consider your space, style preferences, and budget before making a purchase. Additionally, checking reviews and ratings can provide insights into the quality and durability of the furniture.
Just got my first dream place and want to furnishe it. I see all these awesome spaces on here but where can I shop and get a few solid items for my new spot?
I used IKEA and Wayfair for 95% of my place, and I haven’t really had any complaints with the quality or the price. You can check it out in my post history to get an idea of how it looks.
The easiest way by far to not get overwhelmed is to make decisions before you actually pick out furniture. Start by laying out your space with a pretty solid idea of what you want (type of furniture, size, color, etc...) then look at these sites to find something that matches your description and your price range. If you can’t find what you want, don’t be afraid to do some DIY to get it. I painted the legs on my accent chair, side tables, and the base of one of my lamps because I couldn’t find the exact thing I wanted, or couldn’t find an affordable version.
Finally I’ll give you some tips on how to go about designing a space (or anything really lol). I’m an architect but that doesn’t necessarily mean I know what I’m doing (I’m mostly just stubborn and this is how I do things). You want to start by picking your statement piece. The one thing you cannot live without. The first thing anyone will see when they walk in. It can be literally anything. Don’t buy anything that will ever fight for attention with that piece. For me, it was a green velvet sectional. Now, focus on complimenting that piece. I used a green and beige rug to match the couch. The beige in the rug meant that I could use beige throughout the space as my accent color and made things a lot easier. Keep all other furniture neutral (black, white, and grey are awesome). If you have wooden floors and want wooden furniture, I’d recommend sticking to a wood color that is opposite of what your floors are. I have light grey flooring, so the dark walnut wood doesn’t clash. Finally, you can finish by adding art. This is the point where you get to show off who you are. Don’t mess this up. If a painting of a tree from your local Target doesn’t represent you, then you probably shouldn’t buy it. Art is incredibly important because it has a lot of roles to fill. You want something that is going to inspire you, something that you won’t get tired of looking at everyday, something that describes you, and something that matches your space. I’m a firm believer that the majority of color in a space should come from art. Art is the one place where you can be as obnoxious with color as you want. So do your research and find artists that you really love. Take your time and research paintings and prints to find the right artists and the right pieces. Take your time. Don’t get something unless you’re 100% in love with it and you don’t mind looking at it everyday. Art takes your space from good to put together and from generic to unique.
The last tip I’ll give you is kinda weird but it works for me. Step back often (also good life advice). If anything feels weird, move it and look at your space again. If you ever remove something and you automatically miss that thing where it was, then it more than likely should go back. You can also use this to figure out what furniture you need or if you’ve overdone it. If you feel like you need SOMETHING but don’t know exactly what, this will help. You can look at your space and know how big that thing should be, even if you have zero idea of what that thing should be or what it should do. For example, if you have a small corner that feels like it’s missing something, you can tell how big that thing should be based on the size of the space and the things around it. It can help you narrow down what you should buy and might even lead to you adding things you never would’ve thought of before. If the space is small and close to the door, you’re not going to put a large table or a bookshelf there....but maybe a lamp or a coat rack could work. If it’s in front of a window, a plant or a small chair or stool would work...etc. I usually test my instincts by placing a temporary piece of furniture that is about the same size in its place, and then look at the entire space. Get an idea for how an object that size “feels” in that space. Think about the color and the objects around it. Does it feel too big? Too small? Is it too bold? Is there a lot of color in that one spot? This is where the small details come in. The more time you put into these small details, the more your space will feel like a whole as opposed to just a collection of things in a room. These details start to add up and really elevate your space. This can be anything from books on your tables, plants, magazine racks, candles, toys, small decorations....etc. Again, this is just how I see things so this might not help but I figured it’s worth mentioning.
Also sorry for the rant but I can’t sleep hahaha
Just wanted to also tell you I've read and reread your comment. So much detail! I have wood floor so everything you said is really helping me out here!!
I’m so glad I could help!!
Well this was extremely helpful!
Bro, this was exactly the type of response I was hoping for. Amazing tips here. Really really appreciate you for taking the time to help me out.
I sell dining room furniture and think you can find exactly what you're looking for on my site https://dinefinely.store
Some great suggestions, thanks man!!
I'm looking for the best site for furniture that sells high-quality home furniture with modern designs. Kindly suggest to me some good furniture stores.
Please suggest some sites.
The point of this post is to explore the many online furniture retailers at various different price points and different styles. This thread will grow more organized with time, and will be continuously stickied here at /r/LivingSpaceSales for the time being. Better descriptions of every store will come with time as well.
For now I am only organizing this list into two different styles: Traditional, and Modern furniture. I will certainly have more options for Modern furniture for now, as that is the style I am best versed in, and know most of the stores of. I also think that is far more popular among reddit's demographic.
For now I am only very vaguely listing the price range for each website. $ is for budget furniture, not too much more or less pricey than your average ikea. Generally items are between $100-1000. $$ is for low-end midrange and high mid-range, around the $500-2000 range. Starting at your typical West Elm at Mid-Low, or Crate and Barrel maybe towards Mid-High. A step above in terms of quality and price from Ikea level brands, or maybe even 2 steps above. $$$ is for exclusively high-end furniture. Think of websites that sell iconic furniture like the eames lounge chair (eg. Herman Miller) and the nelson bench, that quality and price range.
Finally, please recommend any hidden and reputable sellers you may know of online. For now I am only collecting Furniture stores, any website must sell furniture not just Decor. I want this list to always be growing.
Finally, let's begin the list.

Hello from our friends at /r/MaleLivingSpace & /r/FemaleLivingSpace!
Do you know which brands use solid wood (vs. veneer or composite) and looks like higher quality (not a super slim sheet of wood)? I'd like to look at the least expensive solid wood options available that look sturdy, and am not sure the best way to do so without going through each link to check details.
I have a lot of RH furniture, all made out of solid wood using great mortise and tenon joinery. I’ve been very happy with it, and it should last quite a long time! The sole downside is the price, but you get what you pay for.
I would classify What A Room into Tier $$. What A Room have customizable sofa & sectionals similar to joybird but at a much higher quality. Since their frame is American made of solid wood they are backed by lifetime warranty. Also their cushion has a high resilient foam core with a density 2.2 so it lasts much longer than the normal 1.8 density foams.
Also they have a lot of customization by the size width/depth, configuration, a lot of fabric colors and textures, cushion firmness and more.
I have brought hamost sofa 6 months ago and I happy with my choose so far
Great list! Thank you. Just make sure to cross-shop at Spoken.io
I would put Wh'at A Room Sofas in the Tier $$ list, they have great amazing custom sofas made in the USA. Really high quality furniture.

Hey all, where do you usually buy your furniture online? I used to buy at BigLots, but now they’re closed. What can you guys recommend? Thank you :)
Check out Wayfair…with massive selection across all styles there are also apartment-friendly pieces!
I third this. I've had really good luck with Wayfair with the caveat that you have to read the descriptions and know exactly what you're looking for.
Wayfair or Amazon is always a go-to for me, they’ve got a nice range depending on your style and budget. Also, i’ve been trying Facebook marketplace lately lowkey has some gems if you’re okay with secondhand stuff
Wayfair has massive selections that’s where i bought my new couch…or try article love the minimalist designs they have
Walmart have the best online options, affordable and fast shipping...
hi this are my recos but it depending on your budget, style, and needs Wayfair they have Huge selection, fast shipping, good prices also IKEA they have Iconic DIY furniture and massive selection. it might help you
Just moved into my own apartment (YAY!) and am needing some cool websites that are budget friendly lol! Any tips are appreciated :)
For US I say Facebook marketplace. It's less reliable, but you can score some awesome pieces for cheap. I have a lot of fun with it and am on there way more than I should be.
Couldn’t agree more. Furnished my entire apartment using marketplace, thrift stores and the side of the road. No shame in my game because now all my friends want me to help decorate their apartments. And yet they’d laugh at me when garbage day rolled around. As if!!
Side note: watch out for ANY bed bug infestation in the furniture. ALWAYS inspect any furniture you buy second hand. Always. If you see any reason to believe there was (being left on the side of the road is good enough evidence, but I’m risky and always take precautions to ensure nothing is coming into my home) leave that furniture alone.
Good luck!
If you're in the US I'd say Wayfair is your best bet! Affordable and lot of variety available. You can also look at Overstock.com.
If you're in Europe, I'm in the same boat. I moved into my apartment a few weeks ago and have been looking for deals for furniture! I've mostly heard thrift stores are real good here.
I recently learned on a different sub that if you see something you want to buy, right click on the image and choose "search Google for this image" and it will show you every other retailer selling that item. Most companies are using the same stock image and just changing the product name. I wish I had learned this 2 weeks ago when I bought on ottoman from Wayfair!
Ikea/Wayfair/Overstock/Target for some basics to get your apartment started-- take your time to fully furnish and decorate. My best finds are always from craigslist but it'll take time and luck. Have fun!
Habitat restore has better pieces that just need a little TLC if you're into that
You can sometimes find great stuff at the ReStore! I love shopping there
I have an amazing couch and coffee table from them.
In terms of quality, looks, uniqueness, and environment, what is y’all’s favorite place to purchase furniture?
Don't know where your located but in WA state, stay away from Sans Midman and Mor furniture. It is shockingly bad. Worst crap out there. Not cheap either. We got a whole lot of B.S trying to return the crap too. "restocking fee" etc. Stay clear of those business's.
Ya I’m in Texas lol but def glad others in WA will be warned reading this :)
I wish I had the tech savvy to post pictures. I personally like second hand stores. I don't like being paranoid about my furniture. Good luck with your furniture quest.
My local consignment. Quality pieces of heirloom worthy furniture for a good price. Some antique, many locally handmade in the past. Really cool stuff.
Estate sales
Room & board
I’m totally spoiled because my dad is a carpenter that focuses on custom furniture. Pretty much everything sold at chain stores is crap. However I think Room and Board makes some nice stuff but it’s spendy. I also like the style of Scandinavian Designs but not sure how many locations they have. My favorite places refinish vintage furniture. There’s a store called Golden Age Design near me that refinished mid century modern furniture and I love that place. Definitely expensive though.
I am looking to purchase a home this year or next, and as we furnish the house we would like to upgrade our furniture from ikea/wayfair/amazon items to quality pieces that last.
Other than article, crate and barrel, and pottery barn, I am at a loss as to where people actually shop for furniture. Would love some recs!
Honestly, some of the most affordable (and highest quality) has been at estate sales and thrift stores, occasionally, Marketplace. Some very good, rare finds👍
This is the best reply. I have a mix of old and new, but my vintage pieces are way better quality and much more affordable. I’m also addicted to the hunt.
Ethan Allen
The Ethan Allen sectional my mom bought 25 years ago is still alive and well in my older brother's house. It's survived abuse from 3 boys, 4 dogs, and 3 cats
Avoid Ashley Furniture! Absolute the worst scam company I’ve ever dealt with in my life! wasted $3,000 buying furniture there which arrived damaged, and they refuse to replace it, just repair…, after 6 months :/
I love my Ashley furniture. They would take it back if it arrived damaged. Something doesn’t smell right on this. We paid for extra insurance so just be sure to get that next time.
Nope, check their BBB rating, it’s around 1/5, they only repair your broken furniture, not replace it, it’s a new policy and we’ve struggled with them for months. Sounds like you might be working for them?
They screwed over my friends who bought a living room set. Had it for 6 months, with extra insurance, wouldn't replace it when the sofa started sinking because it was "regular wear and tear"
I have never bought from them, but this is what i know, my wife bought 2 pieces of furniture from them, both broke within a year, and neither would be taken back by them. And my best friend has received several pieces of furniture from them as birthday gifts from family, and has had the exact same issue.
I had a different experience from them. Our couch frame broke and collapsed after only 5 months. They did fix it under warranty (yay for good customer service) and almost a year later, it’s showing the same signs, like it’s about to break again.
COSTCO. Can’t say enough good things about their quality.
Estatesales.net is a good site that lists in your area
My mom is looking to furnish a rental property with a relatively small budget. This is totally not my area. I though IKEA was cheap until I saw the prices on their website. YIKES.
Are there any affordable furniture stores - cheaper than IKEA - worth checking out?
If there is one in your area check out Big Lots. Decent furniture for decent prices. Would work great for a rental property.
Man, me and my girlfriend got a huge sectional from them 4 years ago for $850 after discounts and coupons. (20% off for signing up for their email).
It's so big and comfy and everyone loves it.
For online stuff, I usually check Wayfair.
Agreed. Usually can find some decent furniture at reasonable prices. I haven’t had any duds when I have bought through wayfair.
Yep, the rule of thumb is to only buy things that have photo reviews attached.
I'll keep that in mind. TY for the heads up
Overstock / Bed Bath & Beyond believe it or not has really good deals.
Consignment stores are the best. Just choose wisely plus you get to take the pieces home with you. No waiting/delays with shipping. Dressers, sidetables, lamps, art, rugs. You’ll find everything but definitely not on first trip. Go regularly to several stores.
Follow their Instagram pages, too. The good ones near me post their good quality stuff as it comes in -- and it's usually gone within a day.
Restore, if you have one where you are. (Habitat for Humanity)
They usually have lots of furniture that has plenty of life left.
Didn't think of it, thanks
seems like once a month there's a post in here about how bad west elm is and if there are any alternatives. i thought i'd share my list of stores and let people add theirs on too.
first, a few notes:
there's probably something nearby that has great, interesting furniture. maybe it's a designer boutique, maybe it's a consignment store — look there first. support your local economy. get interesting things. reuse if you can. check craiglist and your local buy othing group!
wayfair is rapidly turning into the amazon of the furniture world: occasional gems with mostly a ton of junk. it's usually not worth your time to dig through all the crap. wayfair runs a number of other sites that are more or less the same: allmodern, joss and main, birch lane, and perigold.
i think allmodern and perigold are pretty well-curated, but pay attention to things there and make sure you always follow the golden rule:
designer furniture is expensive. if you find something that's significantly less expensive than it normally is, it's probably not the real deal. that may be okay with you! but consider whether or not your budget would be better spent on something different that isn't pretending to be something it's not.
i've arranged these by my rough estimate of cost and tried to tag them with general style vibes.

This list is awesome! I will say that for some of these places the prices can vary widely by item. For example last summer I needed outdoor dining chairs and got awesome chairs from Design Within Reach for the same price as the outdoor dining chairs at Target. So it’s always worth taking a look at some of the higher dollar sign websites and seeing if they have items that aren’t as highly priced as the majority of their stuff!
dwr has the most ironic name in the world but they do have some banger sales once in a while. if there's one nearby they usually have floor models that are lightly used and significantly discounted!
People misunderstand the name. DWR was established in the late nineties, to my memory anyway, when much of that furniture was only available "to the trade," if at all. "Within Reach" means commercially available, not affordable to the masses.
Totally agree their name is super ironic since $20,000 couches are definitely not “within reach” for the vast majority of people lol but they do have awesome sales. We got our chairs during their Memorial Day outdoor furniture sale. We were able to get 8 chairs for $1000, and at the same time target was selling 6 chairs for $900 so it was a no brainer
If you find something you like-use Google’s Reverse Image search to crawl for the item at lower prices.
Did this with a coffee table at Wayfair and found the exact same coffee table for 40% less at Home Depot.
Great list and thank you for doing all the hard work!
I just want to add my two cents that while Ikea and target furniture is cheap, I would choose Ikea over target any day and I say this as a die hard target fan. The quality of target furniture is terrible but they look great. Ikea may not be heirloom furniture but their flat box build instructions and quality is far superior to target. Just wanted to warn people!
If you are shopping on wayfair make sure you look around for their other sites, they will many times have the same item listed under different names for different prices. It's all very hit or miss but I have gotten some quality pieces from them... I've also gotten a side table literally made from cardboard, not even wood over cardboard like Ikea, just cardboard panels over a cardboard honeycomb...
Also use reverse image search because a lot of that stuff is available elsewhere. I found stuff from Allmodern at Home Depot for half the price.
Secondary pro tip: Google a phrase or sentence from the product description on the Wayfair product page to look for it on other sites.
Like you said, often the name of the product is different, but I've found the description is seemingly always the same.
This even works across Wayfair's sister sites. E.g. Wayfair, AllModern, and Joss & Main might all have the exact same lamp going by three different names for three different prices.
Also Sams Club/Costco. The desk I'm writing on right now was about $300, going for $500 at Wayfair under a trendier, "higher-end" marketing pitch and brand strategy. Exact same thing.
great list, have you thought of updating it?
There a few not mention and new players in town like BenchMade Modern, Casterly, Interior Define, Medley Furniture, What A Room, 7th Avenue, Pottery Barn & Inside Weather
Castlery seems to get pieces from China Taobao and marks up a lot. I stand corrected though.

Price Range: Compare prices across different stores to find the best deals while ensuring quality.
