What Redditors are Saying

Best Picnic Blanket Recommendations

TL;DR

  • Saltwater Picnic Co. for cute patterns and practicality [1:1]
  • Pendleton Outdoor Packable Blanket for water resistance and easy storage [4:1]
  • Matador Pocket Blanket for lightweight, compact option [4:3]

Waterproof and Durable Options

For those looking for a picnic blanket with a waterproof bottom, options like the Pendleton Outdoor Packable Blanket are highly recommended. This blanket is praised for its ability to resist sand and messes, making it ideal for park or beach outings [4:1]. Similarly, the Sand and Park blankets offer detachable layers that can be used separately depending on the environment [4:4].

Compact and Easy to Carry

If portability is a priority, consider the Matador Pocket Blanket. It’s super lightweight, doesn’t pick up dirt or sand, and takes very little space in a bag [4:3]. The Costco packable blankets also offer convenience with their zip-up design, allowing for easy transport and storage [4:5].

Stylish and Comfortable

For those interested in aesthetics, the Saltwater Picnic Co. offers blankets with attractive designs that users love [1:1]. While Baggu blankets have appealing prints, they may not justify their price due to size and texture concerns [3:3], [3:8].

Heavy-Duty and Wind Resistant

The Yeti Lowlands and Nemo Victory patio blankets are noted for their durability and ability to withstand windy conditions. These blankets are designed to be heavy enough to stay put during breezy days, making them suitable for outdoor activities [5:5].

DIY and Budget-Friendly Alternatives

For budget-conscious buyers, a tent ground liner combined with any regular blanket can serve as a cost-effective alternative [1:3]. Additionally, stores like Aldi and Home Goods often carry affordable nylon picnic blankets [3:2], [3:3].

I would recommend Saltwater Picnic Co. I bought one a few months ago ago and use it nearly every weekend! It’s so practical, comfortable and I am in love with the pattern. Www.saltwaterpicnic.com

Picnic blankets - influence me 😩

I have a nearly 2 year old so we go to the park a lot. As of now we have nothing to just layout on the ground. Would love that, to enjoy our snacks etc. Anyone own a picnic blanket from Baggu? I’m not convinced with the current available patterns, except maybe the miffy one but I could always wait for the next drop. Is the blanket in general worth it? What’s the best things about it in your experience? I’m having trouble finding similar for cheaper anywhere else.

I like the prints, but you can get a nylon picnic blanket for much cheaper somewhere. I got mine from Aldi for about $10-15 last year, and I'm sure they will bring them back!

I’ve found really cute picnic blankets at Home Goods for a much better price. Plus, the Baggu one is kind of small and I’ve seen a couple people say the texture is not that nice.

I think they’re so cute! I just don’t think that I can justify the price for a picnic blanket, the one I have is from Five Below and it gets the job done

Agree! They are not the biggest size. They are almost like personal size. I got one for cheap on amazon and can fit multiple people. They are very cute tho, but can’t justify the price either

I had a cheaper one from Amazon but upgraded to the Baggu one (got it on sale on bando for $52). I like that it’s easy to roll up and it’s thicker/fluffier than other blankets which is nice and comfortable!

I have a 2 yo NK & one on the way. It’s getting difficult to lasso everything with a fast moving toddler. The one I have now is too small for both of us. I just bought a large one, but it’s going to be cumbersome. Any suggestions? TIA

Try something like this. It will be easy to carry and store since it rolls up and shouldn’t be too cumbersome.

This isn’t quite a blanket, but I’ve used one with my two kiddos (and frankly almost always have one on me when I’m outside, kids or not). It’s super lightweight, doesn’t pick up dirt/sand/mess, and takes so very little space in a go bag: Matador Pocket Blanket

Sand and Park has rugged blankets that are detachable and water resistant. You can use them together for cooler climates: parks, soccer games, festivals, picnics and the. Just use the wipeable bottom layer if you go to the beach. I'm the owner if you have any questions. They fit 2 people laying down and 5 people sitting up. I designed it after needing a blanket for my family as well. Made in the US. Sand and Park

I bought a picnic blanket that zips back into a bag from costco and it's great! The sand slips right off and easy to wipe messes fast. I keep it in my trunk.

I found it on Amazon: Pendleton Outdoor Packable Blanket | Water Resistant for Picnic, Beach, Camping, Hiking, or Car (Grand Canyon - Blue) https://a.co/d/57G8dvA

Came here to recommend the outdoor blanket from Costco. I think mine is a different brand because it's several years old but I love it! It's huge, water-resistant, easy to clean and you just fold it up and it has a carrying strap. I also have a fold up wagon from Costco so I can put everything in that and pull it down to the park/beach whatever.

It sounds like you're after a versatile, durable, and comfortable outdoor blanket for those awesome park days. I'd like to recommend a fantastic outdoor blanket that I've been using for a while. It's not only incredibly resistant to water (those accidental spills are going to run right off), but it's also heavy enough to withstand those breezy days. Fits two persons comfortably, great for those romantic reading dates or just sprawling out by yourself. Price point is competitive, given the quality. It's also super easy to fold up and carry around which is a big plus in my book. IMO, it might just be the outdoor blanket you're looking for. Check it out!

I had mine for 2 weeks before one of the clips came off, taking out some of the stitching with it. It wouldn't have been a big deal but Costco isn't carrying them anymore, so I could return it but not get another one without paying a lot more online.

Not a well-made item.

Looking for a travel lightweight but comfortable picnic blanket/puffer blanket

Posted by Entire_Character7386 · in r/BuyItForLife · 2 years ago

I want to buy one that is lightweight and small enough to be carried while hiking or carried around while doing city trips, but that is a bit more padded and confrontabile than the super lightweight one made from parachute nylon (we have a 8 months old). I saw many puffer blanket but the size that i am looking at (at least king size) are super heavy and big. Any advice? Does something like this exist?

Recommendations for a lasting picnic blanket

Posted by Koparkopar · in r/quilting · 1 year ago

Hi there,

Experienced quilter here.

My mom bought me six yards of high quality quilting cotton and I'd like to make a picnic blanket out of it. It would probably get used frequently, but not washed after every single use.

A few questions:

  1. Will quilting cotton hold up to being sat on and used in this way?
  2. What should the backing be? Denim? More cotton? Upholstery fabric?
  3. What kind of lining would you use? I'm afraid cotton batting would hold moisture. Would polyester be better? I saw one YouTuber use a fabric shower curtain liner. Thoughts on that?
  4. I never prewash, because I typically use cotton for everything and I like the wrinkles. But I'm guessing if I use denim or any of the polyester options I would need to, correct?

Thanks, all!

Denim is a great backing for a picnic quilt.

I made whole cloth picnic blankets out of outdoor fabric. The fabric repels water so it gets damp but not soaking unless it is left in the rain or washed.

What is that fabric made of and where did you get it?

I got it from Joann fabric and crafts. I believe it is 100% cotton with a waterproof coating on it. It was back with the duck cloth and outdoor canvas section.

I made mine with denim backing (nice and thick so pine needles, etc, don't stick through it). I used fleece for the batting to make it dry more quickly as well. Nice quality cotton fabric for the top.

It's surprisingly "cuddly" so we use it as a "regular" quilt often, not just for sitting on. I did not prewash anything.

Thanks. I may go this route. I've been storing a bunch of old jeans for "someday." Didn't think of a fleece middle but it makes sense!

I just finished a batch of denim quilts. I am not going to line them but I have before. It is super fast if you don’t cut them into squares but use the whole length. (See photo below) We always tied the quilts because it is a lot of weight if you have denim-fleece- fabric. Long arm in random would work too.

best picnic blanket

Key Considerations for Choosing a Picnic Blanket:

  1. Material: Look for water-resistant and durable materials like polyester or nylon for the top layer, and a waterproof backing to protect against damp ground.

  2. Size: Consider the size based on your needs. A blanket that is at least 60 x 80 inches can comfortably accommodate a small group.

  3. Portability: Choose a blanket that is lightweight and easy to fold or roll up. Some come with carrying straps or bags for convenience.

  4. Ease of Cleaning: Opt for machine-washable fabrics or those that can be easily wiped down, as picnics can get messy.

  5. Design and Comfort: Look for a blanket with a soft surface for comfort. Fun patterns or colors can also enhance your picnic experience.

Recommendations:

  • YETI Lowlands Blanket: Known for its durability and water resistance, this blanket is great for outdoor use. It has a soft top layer and a rugged bottom, making it ideal for various terrains.

  • ZOMAKE Picnic Blanket: This is a budget-friendly option that is lightweight, waterproof, and comes with a carrying strap. It’s easy to clean and has a fun design.

  • Scuddles Extra Large Picnic Blanket: If you need a larger size, this blanket is spacious, waterproof, and comes with a carrying bag. It’s perfect for family outings.

Takeaway: Choose a picnic blanket that fits your specific needs in terms of size, material, and portability to enhance your outdoor experience.
