Department Stores and Online Retailers
For those looking for a variety of options, department stores such as Nordstrom, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and Nordstrom Rack are frequently recommended. These stores offer a range of jackets from different brands, catering to various styles and budgets [1:1]
[3:1]. Uniqlo is also a popular choice for affordable yet stylish winter jackets, praised for their good quality-price ratio
[2:4]
[3:5].
Budget-Friendly Options
If you're on a tight budget, consider checking out stores like Costco, Marshalls, Ross, and Burlington Coat Factory. These retailers often have high-quality winter coats at discounted prices, with some jackets available for as little as $10 to $50 [4:2]
[4:3]
[4:4]. Additionally, Decathlon and C&A are mentioned as good options for budget-friendly winter wear
[2:3]
[2:6].
Outdoor and Specialty Brands
For those seeking durable outdoor jackets, brands like The North Face, Jack Wolfskin, and Patagonia are highly regarded. These brands are known for their quality and performance in cold weather conditions [2:8]. Eddie Bauer is another brand that offers warm and reliable winter jackets, with potential discounts available through their rewards program
[5:3]
[5:8].
Secondhand and Vintage Options
Exploring secondhand markets can also yield great finds. Platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji often have used jackets in excellent condition at lower prices [5:6]
[5:7]. Military surplus stores may also offer vintage military jackets that are exceptionally warm and durable
[5:4].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While these suggestions cover a wide range of options, it's important to consider your specific needs, such as warmth, waterproofing, and style preferences. Additionally, keep an eye out for seasonal sales and promotions, which can provide significant savings on winter jackets.
When you’re not looking for a general type of jacket what stores do you like to go to that has a nice variety of different ones to shop for? I’ve only bought them online recently but I’m curious if any of you have store preferences
It really is going to depend on the type of jacket you’re wanting because my recommendation is going to change since there’s everything from “I’m going to drink champagne with caviar as boba” jackets to “sleep in these woods barely covered” jackets
Clearly they're looking for something like this
Not to be that guy but Nordstrom. Really taken a liking to Barbour jackets recently.
Nordstrom has great stuff at a slight premium price.
Hi, first of all I would like to say that I live in Aachen so my options are to either buy it within the city or online.
Well as you already guessed from the title I need to buy a winter jacket but the issue is where to buy it from as I have no idea what makes a good winter jacket that goes with its price tag. I have seen jackets on various local to brand names including but not limited to Jack Wolfskin, G-Star Raw, Hugo Boss, The North Face, Hugo Boss, etc.
But I am not sure which company makes a good winter jacket as, for example, I have scoured The North Face website and most of their expensive lineup that look nice have abysmal reviews and of course I am looking for a nice water resistant winter jacket thats good for at least rain, snow and -10°C weather which is what we have in Aachen.
Apologies if this sounds like a stupid question but I am not exactly well familiar in this field and have 0 intention of doing trial-and-error with every company I see to find the right one.
So my question to you is which company values quality and doesn't break the bank.
Thanks
I assume you are a broke student? Check the sales section of Bonprix. They are an online retailer. The sales section has some great bargains, I've seen nice jackets there for less than 50 EUR. The quality is not quite the same as the big brands, but definitely ok for the price.
Yes. It is decent enough quality. I would think twice about paying full price, but at over 50% off you can get some amazing deals.
C&A and Decathlon are some other good options.
Make sure the jacket is waterproof, bc surprise, snow is wet.
FYI, if you are broke it can make more sense to get a jacket that is not superwarm. Get one that has a medium amount of lining and that is comfortable for around -5 to 0 C. When it gets -10C, use a super-warm cardigan or sweater made out of 100% wool (uniqlo, Heine, Bonprix) or a puffer vest (Kik) as another layer under your jacket. This way you have a more versatile garment. Most Germans will have several jackets for the different temp ranges of -10 and -5 C, but I kind of doubt your budget allows you to buy two or three jackets.
For an excellent price quality-ratio you should consider a jacket from Uniqlo. The brands you mention are good but you'll also pay for the logo.
Uniqlo is really good
Id say go for Uniqlo, so OP gets good quality price ratio
Uniqlo is so popular that you'll find a lot of fake Internet shops. Take care not to get scammed!
Jack Wolfskin and The North Face are great, can't go wrong. Try on various types and see what you like best.
I am already skipping out on North Face due to their bad reviews on their websites. As for Jack Wolfskin I can definitely check them out since they have an outlet in my city but the prices are what concerns me
Go to C&A and just try it, different ones in the store, how warm and comfortable each is.
I got one from C&A, 80€. Amazing quality and very warm. If you don’t care about any fancy logo, this is the way 👌
I think Decathlon‘s stuff is alright if you‘re on a budget. It‘s not high quality, but it‘s good value.
If you have some more to spare there’s a lot of mid-tier winter jackets you can buy. Obviously all the outdoor brands (Wolfskin, North face etc), but also brands like Wellensteyn. They are quite popular, I think they have good value too. My Wellensteyn coat easily lasted me 10 years and I only retired it because I felt like something new.
I have one of the cheaper Patagonia down jacket now and I am also very satisfied with that
My Wellensteyn coat easily lasted me 10 years
Oh wow 10 years is definitely a long time. Absolutely worth checking out
I’m 27 male, I don’t have a jacket and it’s getting cold out, any recommendations?
Please no hurtful comments lol I love y’all…
Edit:
Budget: $250 (need as soon as possible)
Style: no clue
A million places.
Macys, Bloomingdales, TJ Max, Marshalls, Uniqlo, REI, Target, Paragon, Saks, Moncler, Goodwill, Gucci ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I can go to each one before I decide or I can ask the internet
buy a black puffer on ebay from a brand like north face, everlane, uniqulo,
Well, you don't give us a budget.
That said, REI Outlet online.
Budget added
Uniqlo has a bunch of different style options and won't break the bank.
Uniqlo, Burlington Coat Factory, Macy's and Nordstrom Rack are regularly recommended in answer to similar questions. Schott NYC is recommeneded by Where to buy a men’s overcoat in Manhattan? from 1 month ago. Schott and TJ Maxx are recommended by Where should I go to buy a winter coat? (men's) from 7 days before that. uniqlo and slickdeals.net among others are recommended by Best online site to buy winter jackets best price? from 1 day before that. REI and L L Bean among others are recommended by Is there a specific mall/shop/plaza you recommend to buy winter parka? from 12 days before that and links to similar questions.
I’m in desperate need of a winter coat, but I lost my job and am on a (very) tight budget.
Are there any stores in the valley that are selling adult winter jackets for less than $40-$50? Preferably one that is very warm and goes to knee length?
I already checked the DI, Goodwill, and Walmart, but no luck.
Anyone looking for coats, Costco has a ton of high quality winter coats on major clearance. Some as little as $10 or $15.
Got mine last year at marshall’s after mine was stolen
I got mine at Ross for like 40 or 50 dollars.
This thread made me feel pretty good.
You are all good people.
I've seen cheap jackets at Ski Trucks on North Temple
Winners has been the only place I’ve seen so far, just wondering if there’s any more options
Edit: doesn’t have to be brand new, just able to keep me warm in the -20
Costco usually has some. If you are okay with used, try looking on Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace - now is about the time people are buying new jackets for winter, which means there are a bunch of old jackets people are trying to sell on.
Yeah Costco is usually pretty good.
Check some "Army Surplus" stores. Sometimes they have really good winter gear for cheap.
Eddie Bauer! Sign up for their adventure rewards and you get 50% off then put the jacket in your cart and wait a bit. You’ll get an email with an additional discount offer and you can get a jacket for about $100. They are so warm and very nice too. Mine will be on its 3rd winter this year.
Yes their superior down parka’s are some of the best bang for your buck as far as parkas go. I got my dad one with some stacked sales for $132 during the summer but I doubt you’ll find that price now. Sign up now and you might get lucky for Black Friday. Invest in a good one like this once and you’ll never have to buy it again. I usually keep an eye out of the redflagdeals forums in the men’s apparel section for deals like this
From what I’ve heard, Decathlon also sells a decent parka for the the cost
Yes I love mine and was shocked at how well it’s been holding up. I really expected it to be some sort of scam (cheaper material and not the same is it used to be) but I was proved wrong. I always recommend people shop there for quality winter clothing.
Seconding Eddie Bauer, the clothes are really great for the outdoors and their jackets should have DWR coatings which will be important for snow season.
Yep, this would be my suggestion. Really good jackets.
I found 2 vintage 1981 Military Jackets on FB Marketplace for $80 each, I haven't worn a different coat since because these fuckers are SO warm.
It might be worth looking at any Military/Army Surplus stores you have. My Extreme Cold Parka is a lifesaver.
This. There are all kinds of used jackets available. You could also check out marketplace. I’ve found all kinds of new, or nearly new items for very little money.
Where did you get your winter coat for $60?
Mountain Warehouse down fills you can get for $80. Add a couple of layers, you are all set.
I was going to say that, always buy jackets from there. So much variety at affordable prices & good quality.
New to Canada and not sure which brands have good quality jackets that can last through the coldest months. Preferable not Canada Goose because I really do not have that money!
Edit: thank you all so much!! This is all such great advice
The Uniqlo jacket I bought this year is the best winter jacket I've ever owned.
Did you get the ultra warm hybrid down coat? I was thinking about going to see if they still have it tomorrow.
Marks Work Warehouse has reasonable brand coats. I've purchased all my winter coats from them. Good luck!
Seconding Mark’s
Also, if you can catch the Land’s End 40% off sales (they’re US), their jackets are a pretty good deal and quite good.
Cannot recommend Eddie Bauer enough. They often have sales, and their lifetime warranty is unbeatable. Break a zipper, and they give you a new coat.
Their coats are down-filled, super warm, and great quality. Also, they often go on sale for 40-50% off. So don't pay full price.
Can recommend Uniqlo. Bought a parka a few years ago for a fraction of what the big brands cost and it's so warm.
I think this is the one I used. You can find the same model in clearance sometimes

I grab most of my family's outerwear at a discount site based in Quebec called the last hunt. I don't know what the rules on URLs are here so Google that or their parent company Altitude Sports.
They carry Marmot, Mammut, Arc'teryx, Patagonia, Columbia, The North Face etc etc. Select winter coats put in your price range and grab something from one of the many top brands.
I'm currently wearing a North Face Ecoball jacket from there on the coldest days on Canada's East Coast.
The omni heat stuff by Columbia is awesome, I have a really nice light weight coat I wear when shopping, driving etc when i don’t want a really heavy coat, and it’s crazy warm for how thin and light it is. I got mine on clearance on the Bay’s online site, but have also seen them at Marks etc.
Anything that's an established outdoor clothing store is general a safe bet - Patagonia, North Face, Columbia, Arcteryx, etc. You can get cheaper options like Woods through Atmosphere. MEC has decent in-house items too.
Keep in mind that you don't want the warmest jacket. It's better to get something midweight that you can wear by itself at 0 degrees and layer sweaters underneath at -10 degrees.
Check out wornwear by Patagonia to buy refurbished jackets for cheaper, and thelasthunt to get last seasons gear from a bunch of different brands.
Mountain warehouse is best to start with. You can get a down jacket (-30 Deg C) for $200 or less.
depends on what you are looking for, old navy is cheap, ish, but i would not say the warmest or most durable, carhartt is really durable and warm but more than old navy.
carhartt has a store to the west of north campus less than 1 mile, in the same plaza as target.
Or some of them are on prime wardrobe, so you can try a few on and send back what you dont want on their dime
Yeah in the walden galleria there is a coat store that has SUPER good quality coats for pretty cheap (as far as new coats go) (edited a typo)
What's the store called?
Sounds like Park Avenue Coat Company maybe. It’s on the 2nd floor near Dick’s.
Second, they have a good variety too.
Niagara Falls fashion outlet or Walden galleria should be nice places to choose
TJMaxx, i got everything I need there
Tj maxx has some cheap good coats, just have to look through a bit :)
Hello! This is a very helpful community. I’ve asked two questions here before and got really good replies, so I’m asking one more.
I’m coming from India and I don’t have good jackets right now. Should I buy them in India or in Nepal?
If Nepal is the better option, which is better for buying jackets — Kathmandu or Pokhara? Where can I find good quality jackets at a reasonable price? Any shops you recommend?
Buy them in India at Decathlon. Clothing is Nepal is very expensive. I get most of my winter wear from Decathlon and I get it for my family as well who live in Ktm.
How do I buy decathlon winter jackets from Nepal? Any ideas.
This
You'd have to pay stupid expensive prices for a mid quality jacket.
India unless you looking to purchase Nepali brand
If you want some branded jacket on lesser price, definitely get one in India.
And if you want some locally manufactured one, get one around Thamel/Sorakhutte area in Kathmandu.
My old winter coat is starting to show its age, so I think it's about time to get a new one. I've hit all the department stores, Dick's, Big 5, most of the smaller clothing stores at Westfield Santa Anita, and all I can find are jean jackets, suit jackets, and those thin jersey-material running jackets that I don't know what they're called, none of which are what I'm looking for. I'm hesitent to just go online, since I'm picky about what materials I find comfortable, but at this rate it's looking like my only viable option.
Anyone have any suggestions? The greater the variety of jackets to choose from, the better.
Patagonia in old town
Only if you want to get fleeced. I bet Ross and Marshall’s have some cheaper options
Well worth the price. Lightweight, keeps you warm, stylish, and most importantly does it’s job. Great customer service also.
Ethically sourced with repair services. You get what you pay for in my opinion. For kids clothing I agree with you but for a long term adult jacket it's a great brand to consider.
Patagonia
Costco Alhambra and seconding REI.
I hate the parking at Costco in Alhambra. Too many people now. Loved it when it was price club.
REI on Santa Anita.
Most stores sell winter jackets in the fall. You might be able to find something on sale now but selection will be limited.
And what types of winter coats? Also do you consider a trench coat a winter coat and would you wear it in the winter?
Trench coats are typically more of a fall piece (they’re not the warmest), though it completely depends on your climate.
If it’s not too cold, I wear a Barbour. If it’s fairly cold and I’m going to work, I wear a Brooks Brothers wool overcoat or a Brooks Brothers duffle coat.
If it’s cold, and I’m not at work, I have a North Face or a Patagonia jacket to choose from.
I have;
A tan Harrington from BB A peacoat from Spier A top coat from Cole Haan A puffer from jcrew, llbean and Patagonia A denim jacket from RL A quilted coat from Barbour
And then way too many ski jackets
I want;
A Barbour Bedale
Barbour bedale with various levels of insulation underneath.
50s - 40s college crew neck
40-30s LL Bean half zip insulated pull over
30-20s LL bean half zip with Marino wool sweater under
Below that Arc’teryx Throium
It really depends on what I’m doing. If I’m out in the city and I’m bouncing around and not outside much, I wear a belstaff peacoat but if I’m outside for a prolonged time, I wear a Canada goose parka.
I own a classic and warm Gloverall peacoat in dark navy, another car coat of a German brand called John Crocket in navy and a covert coat from the austrian brand Schneider's Salzburg in pitch black. I live in Germany and they suffice perfectly.
