TL;DR
Nearby Mountains for NYC Residents
For those living in or near Manhattan, Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain are the most accessible options within a 2-hour drive from the city. These locations offer decent trails but can get crowded on weekends [1:1]
[1:4]. If you're willing to travel further, the Catskills region provides additional options with scenic views and affordable pricing compared to West Coast resorts
[4:1].
Vermont Resorts
While Vermont is not ideal for day trips due to its distance, it offers some of the best snowboarding experiences on the East Coast. Resorts such as Killington, Okemo, and Stratton are about 4 hours away from NYC and provide excellent park riding opportunities [1:1]
[1:6]. For those seeking a more substantial mountain experience, these resorts are worth considering despite the longer travel time
[4:2].
Indoor and Year-Round Options
Big Snow in New Jersey is an indoor facility that allows snowboarding throughout the year, including summer months [3:1]
[3:8]. This venue is convenient for metro area residents looking to maintain their skills off-season without traveling far.
Learning-Friendly Slopes
For beginners, Mt. Pisgah in Saranac Lake and Whiteface's Bear Den area are recommended for their friendly terrain and supportive environment for new snowboarders [5:1]
[5:2]. Gore Mountain also offers wide groomed trails that help build confidence
[5:3].
Transportation Options
For those without a car, services like OVRride provide transportation to various mountains, including Vermont and upstate New York, making it easier to plan day or weekend trips [1:5]. Public transit options exist for reaching backcountry areas, though they may require multiple transfers
[2:1].
Hey guys, I recently moved from So Cal to Manhattan and don’t know any good mountains around here. Looking for the best places on the East coast and want to know where everyone rides. I ride a lot of park but am down to try anywhere chill.
Vermont is arguably the “best” snowboarding we have on the Ice Coast.
If you’re looking for a quick day trip, Mountain Creek in Mt Vernon NJ will get you your fix for the most part.
Yup, you'll get a healthy helping of second-hand smoke standing in that 30 minute lift line too!
Don't go to Creek. That best part about Creek is the distance from New York. It tends to attract shitheads from Jersey and the city spending their first day on hill all season (Joey central).
The Poconos are way more chill. Camelback is like an hour and a half in Tannersville PA and you'll get some long runs there too ("long" considering what's available). I grew up riding Creek and I just avoid it like the plague now that I have the choice. Only mountain around where you can potentially get arrested by undercovers in the parking lot too....
Can't second the Vermont suggestion enough. Or go to Loon but that's even more of a send.
Eh, OP mentioned he’s mostly a park rider. I haven’t been to Creek in YEARS but I remember their South Peak being pretty much exclusively park riding IIRC. The rail jams were pretty fun there too. But yeah, I personally wouldn’t go back.
Killington VT used to be my home away from home every winter.
Please stop telling the New Yorkers to come to the poconos
Hunter is the best mountain within 2 hrs of NYC. Otherwise you should hit up one of the Vermont resorts. I think Vermont is just too far for day trips.
Look up OVRride, they run buses to Vermont and upstate. I’ve used them the past three seasons and have no complaints, they provide bagels in the morning and beers on the way home. They have day trips and weekend trips as well as several trips out west and to Japan and Chile.
Heads up they provide beers on the way up, and always have leftover. They will encourage you to take 6 if you say “hey are there any left” lol. I used to take 2-3 in my bag for the mountain.
Big boulder will be your best bet for a park rat as it’s about 2.5 hours away. Personally I like 7 springs a bit better (the parks flow better when conditions are good and there’s more space between features), but that won’t be a great option for you as western PA is a pretty long drive from there.
Boulder will feel pretty comparable to Big Bear, just with less vertical feet.
do you have a car or are you going to need to find transportation? with in 3 hours of the city you have windham, hunter, and belleayre. windham and hunter get very crowded on weekends and expect long lines and crowded slopes. trails are decent. others mentioned mt. creek but I have never been and have heard the lift lines are worse then hunter and windham.
further north you can hit mt. snow, okemo and Stratton. they are probably like 4 hours or so from NYC. snow will probably have the best parks out of those 3.
hour north of those you have Killington which has just about everything you would want but a day trip from NYC would be a haul.
then you can go further up by Burlington you can do smuggs notch, sugarbush or in my option the best mountain on the east Jay peak. park is decent but nothing compared to Killington or snow but has the most snowfall and is primarily glades and is just an incredible mountain if you like powder and trees and challenging terrain. I'll throw Burke in there bc it's just like jay but a little smaller and equally as fun to ride, they have a better park usually but have only been 2 or 3 times so idk if that's all the time.
there are more but I feel those are the top 3 in each area as you go up. hope this helps.
Hi all, getting into backcountry skiing and finally have my 50% resort 50% backcountry kit all paid for (full price). Looking for the best place to shred the steep & deep without renting a car or reading a weather forecast. Thanks for the tips and happy sending.
Mohonk Mountain House up in New Paltz is basically a more secret, east coast Yellowstone club during the winter so you should be able to take a cab up there and get some goods. Total hidden gem basically nobody knows about it. If you're lucky you might see Stephen King zipping through the trees, the guy rips.
I heard Stephen king shreds the glades on ski blades
Flight to Geneva, bus to Chamonix. They don't know how to control avalanches in Europe so make sure you bring your dynamite to make the routes safe. They don't shred the gnar though, so all the runs are easier than Tuckerman Ravine. In fact to answer your question, fly to Geneva, then fly back to Boston, and get a Taxi to Pinkham Notch
Take the train to boston and then the red line and a bus to the blue hills in Quincy
Take a bus to Butternut, then punch the boss in the face
In all seriousness, this can actually be done.
If you go through Downtown Brooklyn to get to Manhattan, take the 2, A, or C subway line to Penn Station.
If you go through Williamsburg to get to Manhattan, take the M and then walk the couple blocks to Penn Station, or take the L and transfer.
Then, ride the Vermonter Amtrak train from Penn Station to the Waterbury-Stowe Station.
Next, ride the Rural Community Transportation (RCT) Route 100 Commuter bus from the Waterbury-Stowe Amtrak Station to the Stowe Town Hall stop.
Lastly, hop on the Green Mountain Transit (GMT) Route 108 Mountain Road Shuttle from Stowe Town Hall. Get off at the Gale Farm Center stop.
Take the short walk to the von Trapp Family Lodge and Resort, which has a bunch of nordic trails that lead to backcountry areas.
Alternatively, keep riding the Mountain Road Shuttle until you get to the Spruce Peak Base at Stowe.
Ride the Meadows Quad and then the Sensation Quad up to the top of Spruce Peak.
From there, hike up to the Smugglers Notch crossover (which gets you between Stowe and Smuggs). Plenty of backcountry there, including the Back Bowls.
Is there any place near New York City to snowboard in June?
Big Snow is it for metro area summertime riding. Other than that there is no place near NYC where you can snowboard in June. Late season on the East Coast can push into May but even that’s still a several hour drive and a few states away from New York. The catskills had a nice push until April this year. I left Brooklyn after 2 years because I just wanted to snowboard too much, and New York is not it.
Killington has had superstar make it to June in the past. But that's a bit of a drive from nyc
JFK to PDX to mt hood.
Big Snow if you’re ready for monster kickers and thousands of feet of vertical in one of America’s most beautiful states.
You’re gonna head to LaGuardia and hop on a southwest flight to Denver or Reno
Go over to JFK and hop on a flight to New Zealand
Go to Reno. Ours is melting fast.
Yeah, it’s nice we had a colder core winter and our base lasted longer than last season, but it’s going fast and I think early June is going to be it for riding chairlifts
Big Snow in NJ
Snowbird.
Moving from Lake Tahoe to NYC in a few months. I know I won’t be able to beat the convenience of living with the mountains in my backyard, and the world class skiing of Tahoe, but want to at least be able to get some turns in on weekends. Any good ski resorts within ~2 hours of the city? Are Ikon/Epic any good on the east coast? Or do people get season passes at individual resorts?
I’ve found that while a little more expensive, I get a lot more out of flying somewhere with good skiing than trying to find powder on the east coast.
A 5 hr flight to skiing vs a 5 hr drive to Killington gets you so much more.
The best “close” mountain in my opinion is Mt Tremblant outside Montreal. New England folks seem to love Mad River Glen. Stowe and Killington are both sizable mountains as well.
Whiteface mountain (?)
Honestly, there’s nothing remotely decent within 2 hours. That’s the Poconos, which means 400 feet vertical. Southern vermont is decent but more like 4 hours each way. On the other hand flights to utah and colorado are frequent and decently priced.
Poconos has decent skiing but nothing like you’ve seen in west coast. But it’s convenient and cheaper. Vermont has pretty good mountains and views but further drive.
Come to /r/icecoast
We're also from the west coast and moved to NYC a couple years ago. My sister recently went skiing out here in the catskills, its driveable from NYC and she said of course wasn't a comparison to the mountains we are used to (whistler, steamboat) but was really nice all the same! and much more affordable. I believe its about a 2 hour drive.
Hello again! Thanks all for replying to my last post about the area, it absolutely helped me feel comfortable as I get closer to my move to the north country. Now, I have another question!
Per the title, I am hoping to get some feedback on good resorts/slopes that would be good for a new snowboarder.
I picked up snowboarding last winter and am still trying to get the hang of things (I can't stay up for very long, and I constantly catch an edge or end up on my ass. 😅) I'm aware of the stigma that snowboarders aren't typically well respected and am trying NOT to be that guy on the slopes. However, I still have lots to learn. I just don't wanna be in the way or to piss off other folks on the slopes. Any recommendations, feedback, or info on good places to learn that aren't as busy would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I picked up skiing at a later age after being terrified of it in my adult life. Whiteface bear den is a good spot to learn for a day or two, and if you are feeling good, the newer notch lift opens up a little bit more terrain for beginner to intermediate skiers/snowboarders, and it operates out of the same lodge/parking area.
Gore Mountain. The lower trails are pretty wide groomers that will build your confidence..
Whiteface’s bear den area is a great leaning area and allows you to progress up the mountain as you get more comfortable
Mt. Pisgah in Saranac Lake is a pretty friendly beginner mountain.
Hey everyone - I’d love to know the best mountains on the East coast especially if you are coming from NYC. We’ve done Stratton, Killington, and Sygarbush, but want to know if there are any other mountains we might miss!!
Mt Ellen at Sugarbush and Pico at Killington are also great
Killington, Loaf and Bush are the good ones. Sunday River is next best but is more like five small hills side by side versus a big mountain. It's good for old people and families. Loon ok. Stratton meh and Windham sucks for multiple reasons. Unfortunate for those from NYC that the closest Ikon option is a dud that requires reservations.
Camelback and Blue are closer than windham but I’d rather go to windham lol.
If you're willing to drive to Maine, do Sunday River
I love the European vibe at Tremblant
Mont Sutton
looking to get one last day in snowboarding. any recs under an hour or two outside the city? small mountains are fine.
Mountain Creek is probably the closest. You'll get down the mountain in about five minutes but if it's not crowded you can just spam runs.
I like Belleayre, a little over 2 hours. Pretty cheap tickets compared to neighboring Hunter and Windham
Thunder Ridge
If you have a car, Catamount
I am a complete beginner. I tried Belleayre mountains in Catskills but the area of beginners was kinda small and really crowded. Anyone know of other ski mountains that have bigger slopes for beginners? Or any ski resort with good lessons for beginners?
Check out ovrride, they do day trips to Vermont (4am pick up though :/)
Mountain Creek. Also try Hunter Mountain.
I go to creek most weekends. It’s close enough that it’s not a huge commitment to get back. Can be crowded but basically all of north is good for beginners.
Did I just do something wrong? 2 people and 2 rentals for snowboarding equipment for a day trip is $500??
I must have messed up lolol
Edit. Yes I messed up. They’re rental to go package includes everything I.e lift and rentals lol. I though it was just for the rentals
Hunter is terrible for beginners once they’re off the bunny slope.
The one green non bunny slope is an exit from a blue and black higher up the mountain. I always get clipped by someone zooming down and it’s like the only good days there are non weekends
I went to mount Peter couple weeks ago, they have very good and free beginner lesson if you buy the whole day lift package
Mount Peter is where I learned to ski as a kid
American dream mall....
Thunder mountain is reachable by train from Nyc and has multiple really good beginner areas as well as very easy green trails. It may be closed for the season already but good to note for next yr
Dreaming of conquering the tallest mountain in NY while resort riding at whiteface. It's a 14 mile round trip with 7 of those miles being uphill. There are lean tos in the area so Im thinking of camping near the base to have the energy to get up and down safely. It might not happen this winter but I am printing this picture for motivation to get in shape. I was hoping to ride the slides at whiteface for practice in a "safe" environment. They were closed due to previous avalanche and a avvy kit is required so next year I'll make sure to have all the proper gear.
Jerry with the GoPro, no avy gear or education and a splitboard daily driver on resort.
The trifecta of a perfect touring partner!
I have a pack designed for avvy kit and an in reach, but sadly, I was denied access to the slides. Haha. Ready to follow more experienced folks into the wilderness anytime, though!
I need to preface that I’m not trying to be a dick, I’m trying to be constructive.
It’s awesome that you’ve got a pack that fits avalanche gear + an inreach but you really need to buy the required gear (beacon, 300cm probe + shovel) and learn how to use it before considering joining anyone, anywhere in the backcountry.
You can follow an experienced person all day long, but what happens if they’re the one that needs rescuing or help? To an extent, it is selfish to put others in harms way due to a personal lack of experience and knowledge.
It sounds like at the end of your post you mentioned that you have intent of buying this gear. That’s great. Please learn how to use it, and continue practicing with it for proficiency.
The best partners don’t only take you to the best snow, they take companion rescue and group safety seriously.
Happy turns :)
You should know before you go
Perfection
I'll get the footage ferda boyssss!
I love wearing sunglasses under my goggles
Prescription transition lenses, bud. I love being able to see and not tearing up from the wind in my eyeballs.
Get it buddy! I believe in you!
Just don’t be an idiot about it. Go with a guide, get the proper tools (shovel, beacon, probe) and know how to use them. Take an avalanche education class. Practice rescues as much as you can. Have fun and make good decisions!
Hi all
Our transportation plans got ruined due to snow. We are from Manhattan, and are 3 miles away in Roxbury and don’t have a way to get to the slopes.
If anyone is willing to help us get there we would be very grateful. Willing to pay as well!
Rock on!
Did you check the website? Chairs might not be running right now.
I believe they were open through the morning - although not sure about the afternoon
