TL;DR
Pocket Casts
Pocket Casts is frequently mentioned as one of the best podcast apps for Android due to its superior user interface and lack of intrusive ads [1:2]. Users appreciate its reliability, ease of use, and the range of features it offers, including multi-device listening and desktop apps
[5:1]
[5:3]. It's praised for being a long-standing favorite among users who have been using it for nearly a decade
[2:3]
[5:4].
Podcast Addict
Podcast Addict is another popular choice among Android users. It offers a wide array of settings and customization options, such as auto-download, silence skipping, and speed adjustment [2:7]. While some users find its interface overwhelming due to numerous settings
[4:3], others have been loyal to it for years and prefer its functionality over other apps
[1:1]
[4:1]. The app includes a paid version to remove ads
[4:4].
Other Options
Antenna Pod is suggested as an alternative, especially for those looking for something different from mainstream apps [2:1]
[2:5]. Google Podcasts was also mentioned as a minimalistic option that "just works" for some users
[2:4]
[2:6], though others have criticized it
[3:1].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When choosing a podcast app, consider factors like user interface preferences, the importance of customization options, and whether you require features like cross-device syncing or offline listening. Both Pocket Casts and Podcast Addict offer robust features tailored to different user needs, making them top contenders in the Android podcast app space.
I just jump ship from iPhone to Android, my main app for podcasts was the default Apple Podcast app. The app isn't available for Android (I know, shocker) and would like something similar to it. Hopefully something not too bad heavy.
Everyone here saying Podcast Addict -- you're all insane.
Pocket Casts is far superior for no other reason than it doesn't have banner ads everywhere. The UI is also way, way better.
You are insane. I've been using podcast addict for 10 years. On the rare occasion I've been without an android phone, I've had to try several other podcast apps. And they are all garbage in comparison.
There is no planet where Podcast Addict is better than Pocket Casts. 🙅
I’d check out Pocket Casts or Podcast Addict.
I second pocket casts.
I third it after Google shutdown podcast app
Podcast Republic
This is what I've used for over ten years and no complaints. I've tried Spotify, but it's not great for podcasts.
Podcast addict. This is the way
Another personal recommendation for Podcast Addict. I'll admit, I haven't tried all the other apps out there, but once I started using Podcast Addict I stopped looking.
Spotify, Stitcher, podverse, escapepod all fail to play episodes with no explanation and at random times even though I have a good connection both on wifi and data.
Pocket cast, you won't find any better than this.
I agree, Pocket Cast has been great and reliable for the nearly 10 years I've been using it.
I really wanted to like Spotify because they hold a lot of exclusive content which is actually good but my god it's awful for podcasts. Pocket casts is sublime Vs all the others I've tried. Only downside is their widget is crap and ugly
Pity that you can't do basic things like global sorting of episodes...
What do you mean by global sorting ?
No ever recommend it but Google podcasts has been my go to for years. Very minimal and just works.
Antenna pod or any app from this list https://podcastindex.org/apps?platforms=Android?
Came from Pocket Casts to Antenna Pod. Love Antenna Pod.
Google podcast is decent imo
Check out Podcast Addict. Download the podcasts to your device on a schedule, listen anytime locally.
This app will give you SO MANY tweaks for auto download, auto delete, silence skipping speed adjustment, customized per podcast. It's so good.
Thank you everyone for awesome suggestions!!!
Not just anybody... ANY anybody.
STAY AWAY FROM GOOGLE'S PODCASTS APP... it has got the most stupid thing they've every developed.
I've tried many apps and I hate to change again. Currently using castbox, but it's not working properly and has been frustrating me for a while. I've also given up on pocket cast, podcast player and a few others that don't seem to be in the play store anymore. I will not use spotify. Any suggestions? I'm not opposed to paying if it functions well.
I have been using Podcast Addict for years and it works fine and is updated frequently. I paid a small fee to remove ads.
Podcast Addict. Free version has a small ad banner but can be permanently removed by paying a few dollars.
I downloaded Podcast Addict when my last app went away. It took a while to get used to, and there are so many settings and toggles that I've never even touched. I don't know that I love it as much as I'm resigned to using it and switching again would be a pain.
Not to make assumptions, but are you a fellow Stitcher refugee? That's how I ended up on Podcast Addict. I've just kinda gotten used to it and don't want to deal with the pain points of changing again.
Does Podcast Addict sync between devices?
Totally agree. I've been using this app exclusively for maybe 10 years now, so it's not like I've tried many other alternatives, but it's pretty much perfect.
I have tried alternates, and they aren't great or nearly as good as podcast addict.
Pocket Casts for me
This. Podcast Addict gobbled up space on my phone. This one let's me easily remove the downloaded files.
I used it for about a year and liked it for the most part, but once in a while the audio would jump around and I'd have to delete the file and re-download it and even then it wouldn't always fix the problem.
Podcast Addict
Podcast Addict. I like it so much, I use the paid version.
Hey everyone! Got a strange one for you today. So I came from ios around a two years ago and I'm currently subscribed to Apple Music. I LOVED using google podcast when i first jumped ship to android but thats been gone for a while now. So what are ypur guys preferred Podcast apps? Don't feel like switching to Spotify since I can't take my Playlists/library with me. Thanks in advance for the suggestions!
I use Pocketcasts. Good UI in my opinion and plenty of options across the board from downloads to option notifications for specific podcasts to multi device listening if you opt for premium.
I love pocketcast. I wanna say I've been using it for about ten years now.
This is the one! Have used it for years and couldn't imagine using something else.
This ☝️
another vote for pocket casts. desktop apps, web accessible, good features
Pocketcasts is the answer
Pocket Cast
Pocket Cast is one of the best podcast apps around. Amazing UI and simple controls that do it all
What is the best podcast app out there there's so many?
AntennaPod is aswome it can even sync your lists to gpodder
do you know if the sync is working again, had some major issues with it about a month ago and ended up going back to pocketcasts. Otherwise its a fabulous app!!
It seems to be working again
Podcast Republic is excellent, very feature rich and configurable, and it's actively supported by the dev.
+1
Podcast Republic
Pocket cast
This. Unless you want FOSS... Then AntennaPod
I have been using Podcast Addict as my podcast app for a while, but it is a very customisable and settings-heavy app, which makes it difficult to just jump in sometimes. I want to know if there is a better app for me to use. What app do you use for listening to podcasts and what apps have you tried? What are some key features and pros/cons? Do you have any reccomendations?
Antennapod, i like google podcast looks more but it can't auto-download new episodes :(
Edit: ad-free, open source, can sync with gpodder, nice amoled theme.
I used AntennaPod and thought the UI was great, but it had some bugs that finally drove me away. I'm keeping my eye on it though, as it is a good app. Currently I use Acast, which is simple but super easy to use.
Pocket cast for a really long time, also paid for it and had features I use, plus great design!
+1 for pocket cast love the design and it syncs between devices
Pocketcasts is solid, but there's a new app called CASTN that I've been using for the past few weeks. It's beautiful and simple and the dev is incredibly responsive. I suggested headphone controls be implemented and he applied them the next day. Worth checking out, it's definitely a Pocketcasts competitor.
podcast addict. it can be heavily modified.
The OP already has Podcast Addict...
Google podcast, because its integrated into Android Auto.
I have been using Google podcast for a long time now and I don't really like it what are some good podcast apps I can try?
Pocket Casts.
Absolutely. I've had pocket cast for years. I can always find so many more podcasts for free than anybody else. Love it.
This
Antennapod and podcast republic are the best
I love so many things about podcast republic but I've had a ton of issues with it skipping around, both forward and backwards. The other day I had a podcast replace the last couple minutes with material from the middle of the show. Listened to the same ep on a different app and played fine.
+1
Antennapod. Does it perfectly for me and is free and open source
Another vote for AntennaPod. Best one I've used.
Thanks for the advice. It looks way better than what I was using
I'm still using Pocket Cast. Every time I try switching to another podcast app, I end up staying with Pocket Cast.
The only improvements I hope they bring to the app are better episode searching and bringing back free access to the web player.
I spoke to the developer and was told there was not enough community demand to justify the episode searching.

After trying dozens of apps, pocket casts is easily the best.
I've literally been using pocketcasts for 13 years. I've tried other apps and nothing comes close
I currently use Podcast Addict, and I'm just wondering what key differences there are between these two apps
This is the best one. I’m used Beyond Pod for a long time even after it was abandoned due to habit. I should have jumped to PocketCasts sooner.
I use this one. It allows you to customize individual podcasts by automatically skipping the beginning and end, boost the volume, playback speed, etc.
Podcast addict
This is the one. Free and open source. No ads, no telemtry.
This is the one I like..free, open source, just works!
Love antennapod. Simple. No frills. Easy to use.
I use YouTube music.
I tried using YouTube music but I can't skip 15 seconds on my pixel watch. Pixel pisses me off sometimes.
Other suggestions are good, too, but this is what I gravitated to after trying them all. Also, your podcasts are now available on Web if you want to sync and listen to your podcasts when away from your mobile devices.

Great app.
I have google podcasts and it mostly works well. I like that there are no ads or features withheld for a pro version, and that it streams.
I don't like that it has no longevity and that I can't figure out how to hide podcasts I've listened to (even though it knows I've listened to them)
I would like to ask for podcast app recommendations (that fulfill certain basic criteria)
also please don't recommend apps just because they are podcast apps but don't actually meet the main criteria above.
if there is anything really nice about an app you recommend, please mention it. thanks.
I use the free version of Pocketcasts. Can't say I've ever noticed any ads. Antenna pod is good too and ad free.
I was going to install it because I remembered the name but when I searched the score was in the 3 range
This has to be the best Podcast Listening app.
This is the first app I tried, when I first started listening to Podcasts, and have never tried another app. This was 4-5 years ago !!!
Only recently I moved to Spotify, coz the number of podcasts I listen to have way reduced.
Don't let the rating put you off. It's one of the best podcast apps I've tried and meets all of your requirements.
Try onlypodcasts app, it was build as replacement for google podcasts
it is completely free, no ads, has good resuming so it always remember where you finished and also hides what you already listened
Antenna pod. Google podcast is so basic, can't believe you put up with it.
well it did almost everything I wanted except for hiding the podcasts I've listened to and I knew it wouldn't have ads or hold back "premium" necessary features.
I did look for podcast apps before, maybe 5+ years ago and don't remember this antenna pod.. so that's probably why I used google podcasts.
I was like you. Really like how simple Google podcasts is. I didn't want to get my podcasts from YT music tho. Antennapod is really similar and has bells and whistles you can choose or ignore. I just found swipe today, set one way to mark played and the other to download. My only issue is that it won't just continue playing the podcasts that are next in line, you have to set a queue
I was a longtime user of the Stitcher app for podcasts. When they closed up shop, I tried several apps before settling on Antenna pod.
They already announced that they will pull the plug out of Google podcast, switching to youtube music
Podurama
Podcast Republic
AntennaPod of course.
