I hear you on the mixed reviews. Have you checked out this model? It seems like a solid option for a portable printer.

ok real talk: I also fell into the cursed rabbit hole of “best portable photo printers” and came out the other end deeply mistrustful of product reviews and humanity in general. every other printer either prints like a potato, costs a small fortune to maintain or randomly dies mid print like it's having an existential crisis.

but... plot twist- the Liene M100 4x6"" photo printer actually slapped. like?? full color, borderless prints that look like real photos (not the pixelated sad stickers some other brands churn out) and it doesn’t scream in agony every time I connect my phone.

you get 100 sheets + 3 cartridges in the starter kit which is honestly generous by portable printer standards. plus it uses dye-sublimation, so the colors pop and don’t fade the second you breathe on them. connects over Wi-Fi too so you’re not stuck battling Bluetooth gremlins.

if you want something that lives in your bag and delivers prints people won’t immediately throw away, the Liene is 10/10. not sponsored, just finally found something that didn’t disappoint me lol.

Dye sublimation although a bit more expensive and uses up materials faster gives you the better print.

Can I print from a digital camera on any of the current portable printers or are they for mobile devices only? I am thinking of getting a HP Sprocket Select, but want to print from my Canon G16....

Depends on how small and how portable you want to go and how much you like stickers. :D

AFAIK, all the Zink printers (e.g., Canon Ivy, HP Sprocket) use zink-specific paper that seems to only comes as stickers for scrapbookers. I could be wrong on that, but I think I googled for about an hour and couldn't come up with one pack that wasn't sticky-backed. If you wanted archival, this is not a good way to go.

Instax isn't really printing, it's instant film/Polaroids. Awesome for what it is, but it's kind of a different thing altogether. It's my personal favorite, but I have an X100T camera that can print directly to an older SP Instax printer over wi-fi, so I can retain a really good high-quality digital file, print out the tiny polaroid to hand to someone on the spot, and then go home and make a 13"x19" print on my Pro-100 if I want.

Canon's dye-sub SELPHY portables are probably highest quality, but the ones that do 4x6 prints are not pocketable.

I just recently got the cp1500 and it’s been awesome. I find it incredible how consumer products that aren’t really that expensive can yield such good results!

We took the printer out in a coffee shop Monday with the camera club and each got to print one page. Then this weekend I photographed an event for family friend and produced 12 prints the same evening. It really makes it all much more available to kids and elders to see.

Photo printers kind of give back what instagram took away from us.

I’m using Canon Selphy 1500, while it’s not as portable as my instax, it’s my go-to photo printer since I print photos by bulk during the weekends.

I’ve been seeing HP Sprocket but am not sure what film it takes (and if there are third party options). How is the print quality as well?

I also use the Canon selphy, but I'm pretty sure the photos that you're showing there use Japanese photo sticker paper printed on a regular printer. I've bought these from amazon japan and I love them! You just need to have Google translate handy

I dont know if they changed this, but I had a great Sprocket printer. They refused to support iOS 11+ so I had to give it away.

I have it too but my photos are always too dark and tinted blue. What am I doing wrong? They look fine on my phone and with other printers.

I have the Canon Ivy sister has the HP Sprocket. I like them both and find both apps easy to use.

Edit:: it's also really fun to send a handwritten letter in the mail and include tiny photos. If you have any older relatives, I recommend it as a fun surprise for them.

What about the Selphy QX10? It is not pocketable but still small enough to easily carry.

If you do get the Kodak I hope you can report your findings in the future. I haven't seen any customer reviews for their line of dye sub printers.

Not a personal recommendation as I have no experience with it, but I've heard good things about the Canon Selphy.

I can second what other people are saying about the canon selphy cp1500. I love it so much! It's handy that it can sun off of a battery and be used away from a wall.

I'm really enjoying the Liene Amber 4x6. I haven't tried printing directly from camera though, I go through a phone or computer.

I have the canon selphy cp1500 and love it. Its semi fast. Easy to use. Paper and ink is decently cheap. However its not perfect. It cant print good blacks. They look greyish. And on high contrast images it struggels. There is a loss of details and you will notice it if you look for it. However, a proper exposed image will look good. So i wluld recomend looking that printer up 😁

Tip if you end up getting the selphy: buy the battery so you can accomplish what you’ve asked. (If by portable you are meaning print on the go without needing to be plugged in)

And buy a pack of ink / paper when you buy the printer, as it only comes with the ability to print 5 photos on the test ink cartridge.

Echoing those who are recommending a Canon Selphy. I have a CP1500 that I've been using for 4x6 prints on the go. Works well enough after spending some time working finding the right colour profile for it.
