Eggs
Eggs are a classic ramen topping that can be prepared in various ways. Soft-boiled eggs, particularly marinated ones, are popular for their rich flavor and creamy yolk [1:4],
[2:5]. Some people prefer to crack an egg into the ramen at the end of cooking and stir it in, which enriches the broth
[5:2],
[5:3].
Green Onions
Green onions are a simple yet flavorful addition to ramen. They add a fresh, sharp taste and a bit of color to the dish [1:2],
[2:7]. They are also easy to store and use as needed.
Meats and Seafood
Various meats can enhance the umami flavor of ramen. Chashu (braised pork belly) is a traditional choice [4:2],
[4:4]. Other options include sliced leftover meats, fried spam, or even seafood like shrimp and fish cake
[4:1],
[3:1].
Vegetables and Mushrooms
Adding vegetables like bok choy, cabbage, or greens such as mustard or collard greens can provide texture and nutrients [2:2],
[4:1]. Mushrooms, especially enoki and shiitake, are also favored for their unique textures and flavors
[3:3],
[4:3].
Cheese and Dairy
Some people enjoy adding cheese, like shredded mozzarella, to their ramen for a creamy, rich texture [1:1],
[1:3]. This may not be traditional, but it's a popular option among those who enjoy fusion flavors.
Spices and Condiments
Spices such as shichimi togarashi or ichimi togarashi can add heat and complexity to your ramen [4:2]. Garlic powder and Tabasco sauce are other options for those who enjoy a spicy kick
[5:1].
Seaweed and Other Unique Additions
Seaweed, whether nori sheets or wakame, adds a salty, oceanic flavor to ramen [2:6]. For something different, try toppings like kimchi, fried lotus roots, or even beets for a sweet and earthy twist
[2:2],
[4:3].
These toppings offer a range of flavors and textures that can elevate your ramen experience. Whether you prefer traditional ingredients or are open to experimenting with new flavors, there's a topping combination for everyone.
Recently started eating Ramen when my friend introduced it to me and I absolutely love it!!
What do you guys like to add on top?
Green onions
Shredded mozzarella, and shrimp cooked in buldak sauce.
egg :3
Cheese
I stir fry it WITH the mozzarella instead of putting it on top , it ends up so good
Also boiled egg
Or extra carbonara sauce if you have the bottle
I'm interested in trying out some ramen toppings. I'm looking for preferably things that might be easily stored the won't spoil and can just pull a little out of the bag and sprinkle it in. I prefer tonkatsu ramen but I like all different kinds. Nothing particularly spicy unless it's Wasabi.
I'd be most likely buying it from either safeway or amazon. I order different brands to try once or twice a month. Feel free to suggest your favorite brand/package of ramen (not extremely spicy -buldak is good but It's also a bowl full of suffering)
Some meat type stuff is OK but I'm not looking for a ton of prep (certainly not looking to braise a pork belly or anything like that) just stuff I can throw in a pan for 5-10 min.
I like ramen but I need to change it up a bit and don't have a ton of spare time or money otherwise I'd not be trying so hard to spice up ramen lol
Ideally I'd just have a dozen or so things in my pantry I can grab a handful of a couple of them and throw in.
I love some beets with my ramen. They're lightly sweet and have meatiness to them.
I also like greens (mustard, collard, etc) because it adds some color and good texture.
I usually put bean sprouts, enoki mushrooms, dried kikurage, ginger, seaweed, bamboo shoots, furikake, dried onion/garlic and things like that. I usually mix in some gochujang too. A lot of those things are dry and can just be sprinkled in top. My favorite instant ramen is Shin Black and I don’t find it to be super spicy. I usually just put my own ramen together though. My friend always puts dried squid or these really tiny fried anchovies and it actually adds a decent flavor and I’m not a huge fan of seafood.
Luckily I have an Hmart near me though to buy all of those things for a relatively low price, but I’m sure a lot of that can be found on Amazon. I usually buy frozen noodles and broth and just throw everything in my rice cooker and it’s done in less than 10 minutes.
Green onion and boiled eggs
I love me some green onion and marinated soft boiled eggs.
I often stick hard boiled in mine- they keep longer so i usually have some onhand. But a good soft boiled or poached egg is best. Crack the yolk and stir it into the broth to enrich it.
I honestly love fake Krab sliced really thin, and it keeps well in the fridge. Seaweed, either nori sheets or wakame for a quick seaweed salad. Kimchi is a little unconvential but good. Fried spam is good. Also you can’t forget your oils. Get some chili oil, scallion oil, and sesame oil (required). Hope this helps
Nissan Raoh is amazing instant ramen. I add any of these toppings, sometimes all if I have them lol. green onions, soft boiled egg (marinate in sake and soy sauce overnight if you have time, then slice in half and sprinkle a bit of sugar and brûlée the egg. I started doing it that way after my local ramen shop does and it’s amazing) , sautéed mushrooms, garlic confit
😲 that egg sounds fancy
Hi guys, Just wanted to share my opinion about these instant noodle toppings since I know they tend to be expensive—especially if you’re someone like me who lives in another country and has to import these things to try them. -Please forgive me for the picture. I know is terrible.
First, something about me: I’m not a noodle connoisseur, just someone who got addicted to spicy instant noodles and enjoys them. Second, my favorite instant noodles are Korean ramyun: Paldo Namja, Jin, Shin Red, Shin Black, Indomie Mi Goreng, and Buldak (classic, carbonara, etc.). You know—nothing fancy. As you can see, I’m more into red spicy soups and spicy stir-fried noodles, so this is where most of the toppings have been used.
My favorite of these toppings is the Kimchi bag by Ramen Bae. It’s really, really good. The selection of ingredients is amazing, the size of the chunks is actually pretty good, they rehydrate well, and—most importantly—they taste great without changing the flavor of the broth. It costs $26 for 340g (12 oz).
My second favorite is the Chashu pork by Ramen Toppers. I found out about this thanks to The Noodle Journey on YouTube. You can buy it on Amazon for around $25 (iirc), though it often seems to be sold out. The ingredients are solid, they rehydrate well, and the fish cakes inside are huge—even if there aren’t many. What I really love is the chashu pork: it tastes amazing and there’s plenty of it. Totally recommended.
Third comes Spicy Garlic by Ramen Bae. It costs $26 for 390g (14 oz). This one includes egg that actually tastes good, garlic chunks that are huge, and ingredients that combine really well. Interestingly, the chili flakes come in a separate bag inside. I really like this one, but you have to enjoy garlic—you’ll taste it in every spoonful.
Fourth is the Seafood and Vegetables mix (390g / 14 oz) for $27 at Ramen Bae. It’s good. The seafood includes little shrimps, squid, imitation crab, and fish cake. None of them are particularly large pieces. The issue is that the fish cake pieces are especially tiny and thin, so they don’t contribute much flavor. This mix seriously alters the flavor of the broth, which is why it’s fourth on my list. If that doesn’t bother you, it’s really good. For me? It does bother me a bit.
Last is the Beef Mix by Ramen Bae. I can’t say it’s bad, but it’s the most expensive—$32 for 390g (14 oz)—and they justify the price by saying it contains real beef. The problem is the beef isn’t that good—especially when compared to the Chashu pork by Ramen Toppers. The flavor is meh, and it looks more like ground beef scraps than real cuts. This is the only one I feel I can’t recommend—especially at the higher price point.
I have been wanting to try the kimchi and spicy garlic mix from ramen bae for ages, but like you mentioned it's pretty damn expensive if you don't live in the US. I hope the shipping options get better some day.
Check out the long tiny mushrooms and lil egg bite packs. Dope af
Enoki mushrooms, they're really good
This is a great review, I'll definitely try and get the char sui pork one!
Holy crap!! Thank you so much for this! If you have any info in the future, for more, please share with us.
Thanks for writing up this review. I was gifted several of these during the holidays last year. For me they ranged from not good to not bad. The kimchi topping was tough even when well hydrated, the artificial egg had good flavor but was waterlogged. Seafood and Vegetable was my favorite. For the price especially I would just stick with using fresh ingredients. A fresh green onion, or shrimp, or fish cake (crab stick in a regular grocery store) def boosted my enjoyment of ramen more than these dried toppings.
That being said I used all of what I got and was glad for the opportunity! So if you're interested there's worse things to take a chance on.
I'm making homemade tonkatsu tonight and wanna know what your favorite toppings are! Please and thank you!
Chashu, ajitama, benishoga, cabbage, wood ear, shichimi or ichimi togarashi
Shiitake mushrooms and fried lotus roots, yum.
Chashu and ajitama, that's it, nothing else. In most cases, I can even forgo the noodles and get a small bowl of rice to pour some broth into.
Whatever leftovers I can find in my fridge
For a quick at home ramen: Slice any leftover meat or fry up some spam. Add an egg any style. Green onion. Top with Shichimi togarashi and dash sesame oil. Baby bok choi or bok choi greens.
I spent all day making pork (:
More ramen
Good point
Soft boiled egg. It’s popular but not popular enough
Someone else said to mix an egg when it’s done
More salt. Drink plenty of water, or you will die.
Gordon Ramsay liked that
I knew someone who'd put garlic powder and Tabasco sauce with every bowl of Ramen. He got me hooked on doing it that way too, it's really good.
Damn I’m hungry now
Soy sauce, minced garlic, sriracha, and sesame oil.
Second the sesame oil. Tried it for the first time today and it definitely kicks it up a notch.
If you get certain "gourmet" brands of ramen (still cost like maybe 50¢ a pack or so) many come with such things. My favorite brand is Indomie, which hails from Indonesia, and is absolutely delicious. Comes with not only a seasoning packet but a pouch of flavored oil as well, a separate chili packet (although I recommend substituting sambal to make it even better) plus many flavors also come with yet another pouch of sweet soy sauce and a packet of fried onion topping. Cook all that up as noodles – add the goodies after draining – and poach an egg in the water beforehand, and it is simply divine. I promise, you will not be sad about the upcharge for switching to the good stuff. It's still a very inexpensive meal, but you'll enjoy it a whole lot more than the usual Top or Maruchan.
Egg. Especially with shrimp or chicken. Simply amazing
STELLLLLAA! Sorry I had to.
Totally fine. I’m assuming you put egg in ramen as well? lmao
Everytime I see these threads, I feel compelled to offer up the recipe a name-forgotten redditor supplied years ago (he got this method from his dad).
What you do is boil your noodles like normal, but don't add the flavour packet to the water. Instead in a separate bowl, you add a spoonful of sour cream and a splash of oil (olive, avocado), and add the flavour packet to that.
Mix that up to create a sauce, and then when the noodles are cooked, drain the water. Add the noodles to your sauce and mix to coat.
Additions to this that I do are; I add mushrooms to boil with the noodles, and I will add sliced avocado to the completed bowl as well. Sometimes I crack a raw egg into it as well, but that is more of a personal taste thing.
I'm gonna try this
Lemme know how that turns out. Its sounds interesting.
Hot water really improves the texture.
The flavor pack helps
Hotsauce
Soy sauce all day everyday
Shrimp
Spicy vegetable- I had it in jail, I haven’t seen it since but the flavor kicked hard
Yea my family and I are not picky in the slightest and I just wanted some suggestions. My go to is boiled chicken (seasoned obviously lol) a crisp fried egg and some green onions. Also I serve the ramen in a broth if that help. Thanks a lot
Instead of a fried egg, try making soft boiled marinated ramen eggs (ajitsuke tamago), they're easy and delicious. You could also simmer the chicken breast in soy, sake and mirin which is similar to how the chashu is made in more authentic ramen. Sliced scallion, bean sprouts, and matchstick carrots are also good toppings.
So how would I simmer the chicken in soy please? Would I have to par cook it then do that or just do that all the way through?
I would start with the raw chicken in the simmering liquid and cook through that way to give it the most flavour. It's usually made by braising pork and I've never done it with chicken, but I found a recipe here if you decide to try it.
Butter and some corn is really good in ramen!
Butter in the broth on on-top to serve?
I put it in top and it just gradually gets mixed in with the broth.
Shiitake mushrooms (sauteed in butter right before serving), chili oil, a slice of American cheese (a classic in Korean ramyun), corn, bamboo shoots...
I add a scrambled egg and either diced Italian sausage or the odd left over diced up country style pork rib.
Going to throw these out there fully recognizing that some of these are not "traditional."
Toasted sesame seed, sesame oil or chili oil, furikake (dried seaweed), mushrooms, bok choy, pickled veg, hard boiled egg, any thinly sliced protein.
Oh yea I am not bothered about being traditional in the slightest. But thank u I’ll have a look
Sretno i dobar tek 😁
Jebeno! Svaka čast
Hvala puno! 😁
