TL;DR
Hardstyle and EDM Festivals
For fans of hardstyle and EDM, Defqon.1 is highly recommended as one of the best hard rave festivals in Europe [2:1]. Tomorrowland is another popular choice, known for its massive scale and diverse lineup, offering something for everyone
[2].
Drum and Bass Festivals
Let It Roll is frequently mentioned as an exceptional Drum and Bass festival, praised for its beautiful setting and well-organized events [5:2]
[5:11]. Liquicity is also recommended for those who enjoy liquid DnB, with its friendly atmosphere and excellent amenities
[5:1]
[5:3].
Unique Experiences
Boomtown is highlighted for its unique vibe and atmosphere, making it a favorite among many rave enthusiasts [2:6]
[2:10]. The festival offers a wide range of genres and is known for its immersive experience.
Berlin's Underground Scene
Berlin is renowned for its vibrant underground scene, hosting various events that cater to niche genres like breakcore and IDM. Venues such as Berghain and Void Club are central to this scene, offering a mix of mainstream and underground music [4:2]
[4:5].
Recommendations for Solo Travelers
If you're planning to attend a rave alone, consider the type of event—whether it's a commercial rave, club night, or multi-day free party—as each offers different experiences [3:1]. Adjust your energy levels to peak during prime hours (1am-4am) for the best experience
[3:6].
These recommendations should provide a good starting point for exploring Europe's diverse rave scene, whether you're looking for large-scale festivals or intimate underground gatherings.
So Last year I moved from south america to the Netherlands. I have always loved any variation of electronic music. Whether it be EDM, rawstyle, harstyle, drum and bass I literally listen to everything. The problem in SA was that the people that really listen to electronic music there is really small and the scene that is already there is usually only tech house or a softer variation of that. I don't mind it all, but I have always just wanted to experience different genres. This year was my first summer in the Netherlands and I've had a TIME. I went to my first festival (awakenings) and many others.
As of 2/3 years ago I've found that the techno scene and other variations with a higher BPM just hit different with me so I went to my first ever rave which was Rotterdam Rave. I am absolutely IN LOVE with the scene. everybody was super nice and just vibing, dancing and would even pull you in to join the vibes. I got to see my favorite dj's like IHM, onlynumbers and Azyr. My expectations were high and somehow they managed to surpass it. I'm still so blown away by it all. I didn't think i'd love it there so much, but I would definitely keep doing this every year. All that's left to do is make more friends who would love to do this with me :).
Sorry for the little vent I just had nobody to speak to just rave about it!
I can’t explain it, Like nothing else, I went to my first rave (EDC LV) and since May, I’ve been to at least 4 more, I just can’t get enough.
The music is mint, but it’s definitely the community that is the cherry in top!
Welcome to the European rave family 🕉️
Thanks! I love it here!
Raving has changed my life for the better. Welcome to the club ❤️💜❤️
Same, literally life saving!
I'm so grateful for these vibes, especially because the people are so open and lively. ♥
I swear i’ve never felt more happier than with the rave community!
Can I join you next time? I was just in Netherlands alone this summer, I’ve been 3 times before as well but don’t know anyone there.
You’re going to have such a nice time at these raves (and festivals) in Netherlands. Don’t know why but the Dutch crowd is ♥️♥️. Welcome to the rave-fan club!
Thank you! They really are and they all dress and look so cook too!
What is the best hard rave festival in Europe during summer ? Fore multiple days raves.
I have been to awakening 2x, Hive. Thinking about Tomorrowland or terminal v Croatia? Any recommendations? What is your favourite and why?
I‘m going to throw Nibirii into the mix. Great location and the Unreal stage set up was just something else this year.
Pffff did you see Rikhter's set saturday? Mate that was one of the best sets ive ever seen. That dude is one another lvl...
Never heard of this one!I will check it out!
Boomtown
Hard Rave? Surely Defqon.1 Festival.
+1
Boomtown 💃
any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.
Are you going to a commercial "rave", a club night, a small underground event, or a multi-day free party? These are all very different things.
Knowing which country also helps. The city I'm in has three different raves this weekend, all with different vibes and expectations.
If you are a US raver, don’t go expecting the American scene as far as outfits and such. With my experiences I felt that aspect was much more subdued.
i just wore all black and i fit right in lol
Legal night or actual rave?
Quite different beasts in the UK.
Tbf the only difference between squats/free raves is the openness of drug use. I started on free parties and squats and I still think legal events are better for music and almost everything else
The prime time is 1am-4am. Everything earlier sucks, everything after is fading. Try to adjust your energy and drugs peak to the prime time and it will be amazing
If it's a good party, it's great until the very last beat. I do agree though, at many parties the last few hours get lower in energy, especially if many people are going a bit overboard with their drug use.
Also, actual raves often last multiple days.
Yes, it can be great to the very end even despite fading
A lot of American rave culture is heavily laden with Parmesan
Where are you from? It largely depends on the city. Regardless, I don’t think the bigger the share of locals the better. Locals tend to overvalue themselves. There is a healthy amount of non-regulars and foreigners that bring some fresh air to the gig. Not too many, but definitely not zero.
Don’t use daft acronyms like plur & edm cus people won’t know what you’re on about
I’ll be in Europe for a while and would like to know where I should be based to see the most breakcore / gabber / nightcore / IDM / hardstyle / noise / etc shows. I live close to Portland where they have a pretty good scene.
If anyone knows good sites or pages to follow for this, please let me know! Thank thank thank 🙏
Berlin
Where would you recommend to go?
you can find all those genres (except of nightcore) in lots of club. I have heard IDM too inside Berghain played by Rob Hall (autechre, gescom related)
Check out sickcrew for events in Berlin
for Berlin events check uncorebar, A_sound, Sub:violenz, Fuckparade (wont happen this year), Praxis Records and maybe some other crews for breakcore and related.
most of the breakcore part is happening in squats and off locations as it was in the early years.
but also not many places left :/
when breakcore in clubs, then often in a mixed bag line up, maybe Lokschuppen at Warschauer Str. from time to time or at Void Club when they host a Gabber/Hardcore Crew. Or Panke sometimes.
Not exhaustive, though fairly complete for the Netherlands. But Partyflock is the central hub for hardcore events online. Just check by genre and see what's out there.
If you want recommendations for U.K, core wars (Liverpool), ditchsplitter (leeds), corefusion (London), varispeed (Bristol)
Also sound advice (leeds), but what we do with sound advice is more multi-rave genre, think you’d still enjoy it though ;-)
Portland representing 🤘
I never went to a DnB festival in my life and would absolutely love to go to one day. Unfortunately, I'm unemployed, so money isn't something I can afford to spend lightly. So, if I could invest my money in a single dnb festival in Europe, which festival do you think is truly worth it? It doesn't have to be a huge, super-commercial festival, I want to know what are your go to festivals, even if they are small and not very known!
I experienced Let it roll in 4 different places and I loved this last one the most. The view of the lake, hills, and castle was beautiful and with the sunset was unforgettable. People don't like changes, and this place was challenging because it wasn't used as a festival place before. There were complaints about the size of the festival compared to the airport but personally, I don't mind. I didn't even have time to go through it all. And I didn't like the half-hour walk from the camp to the festival area in the airport. Here was everything closer. If we have nice weather next year, it will be amazing and I can’t wait for the swimming and parties at the lake. So I recommend Let it roll for 100% ❤️
Liquicity is probably the nicest experience, it is very well run. But depends what sort of dnb you like,it is mostly liquid/rollers with a lot of big dancefloor names.
Just the best vibe all around too. Went to both Rampage and Liquicity this year and it was incomparable. For a festival with at most half the size, they had 15x as many water points as Rampage. No VIP, free sunscreen, free pocket ashtrays that you get rewards for when full, little "passport" with all the details of the festival, actual proper toilets everywhere, and so so much space to dance and chill out with bleachers, chairs, and hammocks everywhere. Never seen so many people smiling in my life.
It was the exact opposite of Rampage where I felt they were trying to maximize profit at any cost. 10 minute lines to get water, shoulder to shoulder anywhere on the mainstage past 10 PM, nowhere to really sit and relax.
I can't recommend Liquicity enough.
One can have almost an entire festival weekend of darker stuff at Liquicity festival aswell tbh. Just stick around Lunar stage and you’re golden
Yeah the Lunar stage was by far my favourite stage and all my favourite sets were there.
I went this year and it was incredible!
My sister was there and she said the same😅 she’s been to rampage 3 times and this was her first let it roll.
• LIR didn’t have very good guide signs where was everything and it was hard to navigate at the festival/camping area when she first got there • NOWHERE had it said that you had to go activate/personalize/get your festival bracelet before going through security. She got that info on some whatsapp group (could be an error on her end tho🤣) • In the tent there was the THINNEST sleeping mat you could ever imagine. I saw a video of it and it was pathetic. Rampage has proper air mattresses. (Both pre-setup tents i’m talking about) • Rampage has wooden floors on the stages and LIR did have not. When it rained at LIR, the ground turned muddy af. It was really slippery and made it harder to dance. • There wasn’t really lights at the festival area so when it got dark, it was really hard to see the mud ponds and where you were stepping. Rampage doesn’t have this issue. • She thought that ppl vibed and were more ”hyped” at Rampage. She found it a little harder to find new nice rave buddies at LIR. That’s all the complaints I heard about😂😅 I’m glad she went to test that festival so i don’t ever need to. I’m sticking with Rampage🐲 (i think liquicity would be nice to experience)
Depending on whether you prefer Neuro or Liquid - Let it Roll or Sun and Bass
Sun n bass ftw.
Neuro 100%, but I do enjoy every type of DnB :)
Darkshire if you like neuro, let it roll if you like all the different sub genres
Let It Roll, Rampage/ Open Air, Liquicity or Darkshire
Hey, im going to dubrovnik between 16-23 August and would love to see a crotaian rave. Is there any hardstyle/rawstyle/uptempo raves then? Could also be in Bosnia since Dubrovnik is close to the border (:
Nope. Absolutely definitely nothing like this in Dubrovnik. There is one night club that is open on a Friday and Saturday that has big name commercial house and sometimes business techno DJ's playing. Everywhere else closes at 01.00am, and I mean everywhere.
There may be a Hard Style / Raw Style night on in Zagreb like once a year or something, but you are in completely the wrong place for anything like this. You will see this as soon as you get there.
Nothing in Zagreb except "Depo" club, which plays hard techno regularly. You can check their FB page for events.
Suggestions for raves in winter in Europe!!!!!
Me and a mate are travelling overseas to experience the culture. Aka eat hectic food and go to hectic raves, experience krach live. Anyways, we’ve got a few raves lined up, between our first being faceless in Germany, and last being thunderdome in NL.
Anyone got suggestions for any big events happening outside Germany and NL since we trynna go to plenty other countries as well. Looking for some more events with hardcore.
The events we have looked at so far include Faceless gates to hell, Oberhausen Germany - 31/10-1/11
Rebellion indoor, Haaren Netherlands - 15/11
Sacrifice day, Breda Netherlands - 22/11
Enter the jungle, Mannheim Germany 22/11
Toxicator, Mannheim Germany - 6/12
Thunderdome, Utrecht Netherlands - 13/12
Its two stages in one hall, seperated by big stage curtains. (and a third in a sideroom, unsure if that one still exists)
The hardstyle stage experiences a bunch of soundbleed from the hardcore stage, while the hardcore stage was always uncomfortably full. The curtains mainly block the airflow in the venue, making it very uncomfortable compared to the other hard dance event held there (Apex, usually in february). Smoking wasn't discouraged inside either, turns me the fuck off.
Granted, ive not been since the last edition before corona, but for a few years previously nothing fucking changed so.
If you are anyways between Faceless and REBELLiON in that area, I would add D-Block & S-te-Fan 20 years. It's at the same tent location as REBELLiON.
Maybe you could go for Halloween to Sub Zero Project, that's in Antwerp.
Interesting, Halloween we’ve got the faceless tickets booked. Such a stacked lineup no way I’m missing it hahah, appreciate the suggestion though
Another event in Belgium would be great
Hardstyle DNA Indoor on November 8th in Norway if you wanna visit another country! Radical Redemption, Dimitri K and Noisecontrollers have been announced so far
Thank you so much for telling me about this, noiseflow on the lineup, I’m defo coming there now
Amazing!! Yes the lineup is pretty good right now IMO🤩
Oh yeah now this sounds amazing, I’m a huge radical redemption fan. This is also 3 artists on the midnight mafia lineup for this year so hopefully the rest of the artists for the event are different haha. This is definitely getting added to the list though.
MOH Switzerland has monstrous line-up but you'd have to come a month early, on the 27th of September
I have seen that lineup, very insane, we sadly get to NL on the 28th of October, coming from Aus.
Can't say i can recommend toxicator honestly. Live kinda close by so Ive been a few times, but Ive never actually had a good time lmao
Sana Duri in Sweden 25th October
Like the title says, I really want to go to a DnB rave while I’m in Europe! Would really love to go to one especially in the UK. This is a bucket list for me and I want to make sure I do it right. Knew this would be the sub to ask!
Catch a Rupture event if you can. Premium top shelf dnb night. Doesn’t get better.
Do you mean an actual rave or a club event?
Either way, Bristol.
Go to bristol (lakota? Motion?) or maybe brighton (volks) and go to a reasonably big name or an artist who plays the genre of dnb that resonates with you. Immerse yourself, make friends, pull big frowny faces to the person nect to you, option to scream when you like what the dj is doing. Go for the music.
Vote for bristol! DnB all weekend. Check out Headfirstbristol.co.uk for listings.
headfirst is good for Bristol listings BUT doesn't have all the bigger events. A lot of those are on Seetickets or on Skiddle. Also look at Document, Prospect Building and the Underground as venues, they all have big dnb events too.
Motion is closing down unfortunately. They couldn’t get their license renewed. Traveling to Bristol for the WAH BBQ event to say goodbye :(
Ah man, this is how I find out! Such a shame to lose one of the most iconic venues in the country... A sign of the times sadly
They are just moving.
It's been on the cards for years and they are making a whole shit load of money out of it so don't feel too bad for them.
There are so many other clubs in Bristol
Yup, same, not going to bbq but one of the closing series events the following week.
I make a mean bass face, trust me. I’m from the US but I’ve been listening to Drum and Bass since like 2007 and have really grown to love dancefloor and liquid the most. I feel like I owe it to the UK to rave in the place it was born! What you mentioned is is exactly what I want too; the immersion and to be surrounded by people who also have an immense love for the genre!
There's always enough good stuff to pick in LDN on the dates you're in, just check Resident Advisor for listings of the sound you're after..
..my only suggestion for an authentic UK experience is to have a drink at 'spoons before you go in
Sun and bass but it’s in Sardinia
Vi som är oskyldiga dåå 😭😭
I’m from the UK but it’s on my bucket list to try an American rave. Somewhere with music all night long, good sound system, cool lasers and decorations and heavier music. I’d want to go to a large event with loads of stages to explore. I want to experience PLUR culture and kandi trading! Where would you recommend? Somewhere that is so good it’s worth traveling from Europe to try 😆
Electric forest for the most PLUR vibes, Lost Lands for the Heaviest music, maybe EDC for the best lights and production
I couldn’t agree more with this statement. Electric forest has a certain ambiance that just isn’t replicated anywhere else. EDC holds so many special memories and it being in Las Vegas elevates the fun factor.
There is one place the vibes of Electric Forest can and are surpassed... it's called Shambalah, not in the US though
Been to all three and Lost Lands is still my favorite. Did both EDC and Lost Lands twice but at Lost Lands everybody is just on the same page about the music so everybody is raging the entire time. Such a blast!
Imo the best vibes are going to be at a camping festival, not something enormous like EDC.
For heavier music I would look into Lost Lands or Dancefestopia! DFT is a little bit smaller(only 2 or 3 stages) but the vibes are immaculate 🤩🥳
Big up the camping festivals. On our side if the pins you have a lot of great choices in the Netherlands & Germany. Plus all the multi day fests like seiget
Yes I went to Sziget in 2018! I love raves in Europe but I’m really intrigued by American raves as they seem a different vibe.
Goto edc vegas.
Its the pinnacle of “American rave culture” the good and the bad
Tons of stages, tons of ppl dressed up in silly outfits, music all night, lots of music variety, hardtech, psytrance, dnb all represented
Wait edc Vegas has psytrance?!
There's a stage called Quantum Valley which is dedicated to trance, not strictly psytrance if I recall but they always host psytrance acts
EDC is like adult raver Disneyland. You come for the music, but the happiness comes from those firework shows.
Lightning In a Bottle, 5 days if you do the full event, camping, multiple bass stages, endless side quests (things to explore at all hours of the day/night), roaming art cars, renegade dj sets. It's basically a smaller burning man.
