TL;DR
Medications
Several medications are commonly recommended for motion sickness. Dramamine is a popular choice and can be taken the night before travel to ensure it's in your system [2:3]. Bonine is another option that lasts up to 12 hours and is preferred by some due to its non-drowsy formula
[4:1]
[4:2]. For severe cases, the Scopolamine patch (Transderm Scop) is highly effective and worn behind the ear
[5:2]
[5:4].
Natural Remedies
Ginger is widely recognized for its anti-nausea properties. It can be consumed in various forms such as ginger tea, capsules, or ginger ale [1:4]
[3:1]
[5:2]. Peppermint is another herb that can help alleviate symptoms
[3:1]. Acupressure wristbands like Sea-bands apply pressure to specific points believed to reduce nausea
[3:2]
[5:3].
Behavioral Techniques
Looking out at the horizon can help stabilize your perception of motion, especially on boats or airplanes [2:5]
[5:5]. Avoiding activities that can exacerbate motion sickness, such as reading or looking at screens while moving, is also recommended
[5:5]. Some people find relief by wearing motion sickness sunglasses, which help align visual cues
[1:3]
[5:7].
Additional Tips
Other suggestions include using topical oils like Motioneaze applied behind the ears [2:1], consuming salty snacks to maintain blood pressure
[2:2], and trying exercises that train the brain to adapt to motion
[1:5]. It's important to note that motion sickness can vary in severity and may require different approaches based on individual needs. If OTC methods are ineffective, consulting a doctor for prescription options might be beneficial

If you can deal with the meds, like Dramamine or metoprolol, use them. If you can’t, bite the bullet/seat belt.
I’ve been told motion nausea is because your eyes and ears don’t align with actual motion so looking out the window and listening to music help.
In any case don’t worry. Plenty of vehicles get thrown up in and they get cleaned up.
I have Wuzees Motion sickness sunglasses and they are awesome.
Ginger ale but it has to be a good ginger ale that actually tastes like ginger.
I have a family member who works in the medical field and there are a series of exercises will cure or at least drastically help, but they suck. I don't remember the specifics but it involves you moving your head side to side or just in different directions in general while attempting to read something, the idea being the train your brain to get used to movement when looking at sedentary objects. It sucks because for the first couple weeks you will get motion sickness, I was told to just do it before bed so you can go straight to bed after.
I have taken Dramamine before getting on my flights to avoid motion sickness upon landing. Also, closing your eyes and making sure you’re looking forward and not to the side while in a car also helps greatly. 💁🏻♀️
Dramamine
Main character music.
Salty snacks to suck on (because my blood pressure drops and it helps keep it up)
I'll try it out, thanks
If you take Dramamine apparently it’s good to take the night before so it’s in your system and take it again the day of
Thanks
Motioneaze .. a topical oil you rub behind your ear.. i was skeptical but it worked
Thanks, I'll try it out
Look out at the horizon! Especially if on a boat or airplane
Thanks
I am in desperate need of help with motion sickness. I have struggled with motion sickness my whole life but recently it has gotten significantly worse and it impacts my daily life. Cars, buses, trains, bicycles, planes, running a bit too fast… it doesn’t matter, I am motion sick with all of them. Western medicine says there is nothing wrong with me. OTC meds either do not work or leave me drugged up. Any tips/advice on the more natural side would be appreciated. Thank you. :)
I get terribly motion sick and it’s INCREDIBLY random but the one thing I will never travel without are my Sea-bands. I just checked online and they are less than $15…I put mine on as soon as I am headed to the airport or ferry or car ride etc. I still have to do all my other protocols so it’s not a cure all but I do think the acupressure point does help💙
But aside from ginger to help with the upset stomach, I don't actually know of anything that would help with the dizziness itself. I don't know what would cause that.
I ve seen a lot of people claiming that chewing on some calamus root did very well for vertigo/nausea. I ve ordered some and waiting for it to arrive cause I'm suffering from this too.
Weed also helps a lot but it's not always convinient to carry and to consume. Especially if you are the one driving or have to be sober later.
Hey! Did you order the fresh or dried root ? Do update if it helps you when you use it cheers
Dried. Fresh is better but dried works too, you just have to chew a little more I think.
I could suggest Epley maneuver (helps with ear crystals) and nettle leaf powder tea (helps with allergies, but may work also). I developed dizziness during perimenopause and those two things help me. Can’t go without drinking nettle powder tea twice a day.
I get motion sick and these are my go to methods, starting with herbs due to this subreddit:
*peppermint - I keep peppermints in every bag for motion sickness or digestive support, but only the kind that actually has peppermint in it (not just flavoring) and little other crap. Trader Joe’s brand is my fave - actually has peppermint leaves in it.
*ginger - for long lasting queasiness or bloating, I use ginger tea, with just ginger (traditional medicinals is the only one I know of that doesn’t include other stuff in it). Ginger Soother drink is also great in these situations.
I typically use peppermint for when I feel nauseated or gurgly, and ginger if I feel bloated or gurgly and I don’t have peppermint.
I use seabands if I’m going to be on water for extended periods of time or for short flights (the faster gaining and then losing of altitude can really get to me.)
Speaking of seabands, look up acupressure points for nausea. There’s one on the outside of my knee and one on your foot that helps me when that nauseated feeling just isn’t budging.
I learned this from a pilot - vertigo and that nauseated feeling is because your limbic system can’t identify your spatial orientation. Look at the horizon - that helps.
Also, split your vision - make your hand flat and align with your nose (fingers up, pointer finger along ridge of nose and forehead) such that you are splitting your field of vision. This will force your brain to reorient
Lastly, they have glasses that you can wear with water halfway filled in the rims that mimic a horizon and therefore support your brain in orienting your body. These are typically for kids who get car sick.
And, I would go to the doctor - you might have something else going on that is impeding your limbic system from functioning normally if it is impacting every part of your life. Just want to be safe!
Good luck!
Hi! Currently on a 7 day cruise and battling some serious motion sickness/seasickness. It’s only the second day and it’s been rough. What are some tips/tricks that could help me through this? I’ve got some ginger supplements for motion sickness but I’m thinking I need some other options as well. So far the first day I was fine, but today in particular has been a battle
Bonine. Works better than the patches in my opinion and lasts roughly 12 hours. I don't travel without it.
The ship store or doctor should have it. Doctor may be a heavy cost, so check the store or guest services first
Edit * Also, enjoy the rest of your cruise!
also non-drowsy dramamine has been great for me
If you opted for the cruise travel insurance the doc it may be fully covered.
Another vote for Bonine here! I take 1 every 12 hours on cruises and haven’t had any issues so far. Bonus that it doesn’t make me drowsy.
Green apples. Guest Services almost certainly has complimentary seasickness meds.
I second green apples! Sprinkle with a little salt if you can. I had major sea sickness on my first cruise years ago and the staff told me this tip. It's been my go-to ever since.
Worked for me as well. I didn't see them on the buffet, so I asked and they brought me several.
Dramamine and smelling cut lemons (they can cause heartburn or vomiting due to the acid, so don’t ingest them).
Where are you in the world? Hit up a pharmacy for motion sickness meds.
We’re heading to Bermuda, so far day 3 was starting to treat me better till it wasn’t
Oh no. Hope you got some relief.
Bonine
My wife has had trouble with motion sickness who entire life. She’s tried Dramamine Bomine ginger ale you name it. We thought we had something figured out with the patches for behind the ear and a relief band that kinda shocks you or something like that. We’ve taken several flights and a cruise no issue. We took a trip to Iceland and she got sick on the plane and sick the first day on the boat. She’s been fine the last couple days but she’s not feeling well again. Is there anything else at all we can try? Thanks in advance.
Also is this something that will get better the more she travels?
Strangely, this was my dad’s area of research.
Ginger can be very helpful. You can take it in capsules which are much stronger than Ginger ale.
When you’re traveling, it’s helpful to face the direction that you’re going and focus on the horizon. No reading.
It sounds like you’ve tried every over-the-counter method that I know about besides ginger capsules.
Maybe time to see a doctor.
Scopolamine patch (Transderm Scop): Most effective for severe cases. Worn behind the ear and replaced every 72 hours. Start 4 hours before travel.
Promethazine (Phenergan): Strong anti-nausea drug; also sedating.
Ondansetron (Zofran): Controls nausea and vomiting but doesn’t prevent motion sickness itself.
Diazepam (Valium): Occasionally prescribed when anxiety worsens symptoms
I hope she gets some relief.
I second the Transderm Scop (scopolomine). I’m a sailor and I use it every time we venture out into the ocean. Works like a charm, and by the time it wears off, something magical occurs: I don’t get seasick for the rest of the voyage!
As a perpetually nauseous girly myself, i can second all of these! I actually haven’t used the patch before however for me, zofran is the fastest acting and my go to when I’m about to puke. But Promethezine is the most helpful for me when I’m nauseous from anxiety or nervousness; it’s either a pill or injection and the pill has to be swallowed and digested so It can make it slightly more difficult than zofran to get down if that makes sense. Gin Gin candies by The Ginger People are godsend for roadtrips. BUT MY BOYFRIEND recently discovered these motion sickness goggles—That look ABSOLUTELY ridiculous and silly, i tried them out and they actually worked for me! I went on a 18 hour car trip as a passenger and never had to take Dramamine or zofran or promethozine. So cool!! You can find them online, i think my boyfriend got my pair for around $10 on amazon
I get horribly motion sick, have all my life. I take Zofran for normal, flat roads and small boat rides, Phenergan for mountainous, curvy drives (when I am not driving), cruises and plane rides.
There are these elastic bands that have a round plastic button. You wear them on your wrist so the button presses the trigger point that relieves motion sickness. When I hold the button and push on it, it seems to help more.
I've found when I get motion sick in a car wearing an eye mask helps. I think the changes in natural light and shadows makes it worse, completely blocking light helps.
When all else fails I take zofran/ondansetron, which is prescription. It always works.
Those work great the caveat is you have to put them on BEFORE you get on the boat, plane, car, not once you start to feel sick. Also make sure you put them on the correct acupressure point.
It's all placebo effect for people with minor motion sickness.
It's not going to matter when you put them on or how you wear them. What matters is you trick your brain into believing they're helping and then your brain starts ignoring the minor nausea. Because motion sickness is just your brain going a little haywire from sensory conflict.
For people with more serious motion sickness to the point they will easily vomit, those bands will probably not do much. No harm in trying, but probably much better off just talking to a doctor and getting a prescription for something that will actually work.
Lot of great recommendations so far. I'm going to add a weird one that worked for a family friend.
She would get intense bouts of motion sickness at odd times. Eventually she found a doctor that recommended daily pseudoephedrine and slightly increasing salt intake. After that never had a another episode.
Pseudoephedrine helps me as well. I was surprised to see it it so far down. I can't have any fluid in my ears if I'm going on a boat or anything with movement other than a car.
Looking at the horizon, never reading or looking at a map in a moving car, staying hydrated, all help too.
This all eventually morphed into a vertigo that got so bad I couldn't go downstairs in my house without feeling sick.
Obviously, any kind of amusement park ride is a hard no. I've had to give up skiing completely. The chairlift was horrible, but even going downhill was difficult.
The head exercises helped immensely. It doesn't seem like anything is happening but then the bouts of nausea are reduced.
She could talk to her doctor if she hasn’t already. There are some prescription options that may work better than OTC.
It may be helpful to know that motion sickness can be worse during menstruation.
There are at least 3 different formulations of Dramamine. (One that’s just ginger, one that’s “classic” that is more easily found in stores, and one that is 8-12 hours that I have to order online). Everyone is different, but the extended non-drowsy works best for me.
One of my friends swears by these glasses that have liquid in them. The idea is that the eyes/brain can recognize the motion accurately instead of interpreting the motion as being dizzy. I haven’t tried them.
As a lifelong motion sickness sufferer, unfortunately it got worse with age and not better with experience.
Those glasses look so ridiculous to me, but I wear them gladly. They absolutely work for me for motion sickness.
I had no idea menstruation can affect motion sickness.
I will be travelling in a few days and the worst part about traveling to me is the journey, it makes me miserable. I don't trust the hacks and I've tried everything, but nothing works for me - do you know of any over the counter solutions for that?
Dramamine. Available at most pharmacies. It works wonders but might also make you sleepy.
Wuzees motion sickness glasses. www.wuzees.com
Trust me, i am the same, if i am driving no problem if i am passenger i need to look straight on the road all time or i will get motion sickness fast so try to fix your head on the road and try it for a while
Hold a sliced lemon/a cloth with vinegar near your nose and keep smelling it
It counters motion sickness
will try this, thanks
I get terrible motion sickness on boats and buses. Things like Meclizine, wrist bands, and staring at the horizon don’t help much. Any newer meds or techniques that you have personal experience with that helped significantly more? I want to be free to explore on different transportation and enjoy my trips!
My mom, my sister and I get terrible motion sickness. A couple of years ago I tried a Relief Band and it’s like a miracle. We can actually go on small boats and twisty car rides without puking. (I have no financial interest in the company)
I have an EmeTerm band that I got for a cruise but it’s similar I think. It’s kinda uncomfortable but better than the feeling of motion sickness. I was able to take it off briefly for the spa/pool (though they sell a waterproof one, just didn’t want to commit to the extra cost not knowing if it worked). I have always had bad motion sickness even on short ferry rides (the TCC to MK ferry at Disney World did me in lmao), so it was also a game changer!
Also. No matter what you do, don’t forget to eat. Having a full stomach helps a lot.
Get the prescription motion sickness patch (scopolamine) and a prescription for zofran (antinausea). They are game changers.
Scopolamine is GLORIOUS. It does make me sleepy but I also consider that a win for jet lag and travel generally. Zofran doesn’t make me sleepy and also does an excellent job of stopping nausea
I’ll try asking about Scoplamine. How far in advance do you like to take it?
I’ve taken Zofran and it helps some without any noticeable side effects, though really difficult for me to get it approved by insurance.
Scopolamine patches work really well for me but they never stay on as long as they are supposed to!
Prescription zofran
I’ve taken Zofran for nausea, not motion sickness. It’s good, mild, but usually insurance is very stingy about covering it.
Helped me a lot. Try it at home first though to see how you tolerate it. I discovered that it makes me feel terrible if I take it on an empty stomach. As long as I eat something, even just a little, it really helps though. MUCH better than anything like Gravol / ginger etc
Tangentially related but want to pass it on. In my 20s I had to have several surgeries and always woke up nauseous from the anesthesia; it would take days to recover. Fast forward a decade+ to yet another surgery and I mention the nausea to the anesthesiologist.
He immediately asked if I'm prone to motion sickness. Big yes! He said, "That won't do," left for a moment and came back with a patch to place behind my ear. What a difference! I woke up feeling great and ready to go home.
I hope you never have to have surgery, but if you do, remember to ask for a motion sickness patch. It's a game changer
I’ve had a few surgeries, only thing that made me instantly throw up was morphine after a c-section.
Hello, my boyfriend is taking me on my first cruise in a couple weeks. I suffer from motion sickness really bad in cars and other situations with weird motion like video games. Everyone has told me to use Dremamine but I still wanted to be able to drink this trip, and the warnings say that you are not to mix that mediation with alcohol. Does anyone have experience with this? Any tips or tricks you have learned would help a lot.
Another endorsement for meclizine. It's non-drowsy and doesn't clash with booze. It's sold under the brand name Bonine but the generic version works just as well.
I'm very prone to motion sickness. One meclizine tablet a day starting a couple days before the cruise and continuing every day of the cruise lets me cope with the rough Pacific Ocean stretches of Alaska and Mexican Riviera cruises.
The one time I skipped taking the med coming back from Puerto Vallarta... oh, I paid for that complacency.
I will note that even I don't need medication in the Caribbean.
Is it less effective if you wait until you are sick? Not sure how it will go so I was considering sticking it out until the first port, unless it gets real bad.
I use meclizine and I don't worry about the drinking (nor does my pharmacist wife).
Ask at the pharmacy, it's over the counter but may not be stocked on the shelves. At Walmart it's something like 100 chewables for $10. Start a day or two ahead of time, one in the morning before breakfast, another before dinner in the evening.
I took it on the first couple days of a cruise and felt fine, so I thought I didn't need it... wrong. It happened to be a night we had big swells. I went to my cabin, took the medicine, took a 30 minute nap or so and I was good to go. Medicine + nap = reset my brain.
You can take it as a remedy. The relief won’t be immediate but it should work.
Yes, starting BEFORE the cruise is key! I also take Meclizine starting a night or two before the cruise, and then every night at bed time while on board.
Sea Bands or other wrist bands that use pressure to relieve nausea work for some and not for others, but in my experience, if they work, they work well. And since it is not medication, it will have no complications from alcohol. They are pretty cheap and definitely worth a try if you suffer from motion sickness and don't like medication.

Here is a link to the one that I use.

My recommendation too.
Don’t waste time with anything over the counter if you REALLY get seasick. Ask doctor for Scopolamine patch - it’s almost a sure thing that you won’t get sick.
I get seasick in a bathtub and yet have been on over 16 cruises without issue - plenty of drinking included.
Might make you a little sleepy and give you dry mouth/eyes… but worth not being sick.
You're also very likely to simply not experience seasickness on a cruise. Ships are massive and very stable. The motion, if discernable at all, doesn't have the chaotic motion of being on a small boat (like, on a fishing boat or whale-watching tour). Instead, it's just a gentle motion upwards for 8 seconds, followed by a gentle motion downwards for 8 seconds, repeated. No twisting or going from side to side. Most people get used to it very quickly, even if they have experienced seasickness on smaller boats previously.
Not the cruise I’m in In Alaska one very rough night had to hold on to hall rails (no drinking involved) doors slammed thing’s sliding all over
Going on a 10 hr overnight flight to Europe and I want to be CONKED out because I hate sitting still for that long plus I get really bad motion sickness!! I plan on taking magnesium + melatonin but if there’s a better option out there i’m open to suggestions 🤍🤍
Also need something for motion sickness in cars/boats that’s not an over the counter pill 🙏🏼
Ginger pills 💊 works for upset stomach and motion sickness!!!!!
They work like a charm!!!!
There are herbal patches they sell that you put behind your ear for 3 days for motion sickness. We just used them on an expedition vessel crossing the drake passage. Also, the motion sickness wrist bands. They work great for many people. Lastly, ginger chews.
Do you happen to know the brand and where I can buy them? Thank you🤍
Sorry I don’t know the brand! I live in Europe and probably have different stuff to where you are. I got mine otc at the pharmacy, but my friends on the same ship just bought theirs online. Google “herbal motion sickness patch”. Good luck!
For sleep, I’d probably consider passionflower, chamomile, and skullcap.
For motion sickness, ginger pills.
There's a tea from Bigelow called lavender chamomile that works great for me. In addition to those two herbs, it also has passionflower and poppy in it. I sometimes have it with one bag of tea to just help myself unwind a little, or two bags a couple hours before bed to really help me sleep. Just a word of warning if you're new to that, though: the first several times I did that as a sleep aid, I had some pretty weird, very vivid dreams, and I've heard othe people say the same about passionflower.
Valerian might be a good option! You could make a tea (blend it with other stuff because it tastes icky, I recommend peppermint & lavender) and bring the dry tea leaves and make it with some hot water from the flight attendants
Thank you! What are the notes usually like? Bitter/herbal/floral?
Valerian smells like a wet dog in dirty socks. It does work though.
Feet.
But be careful about dosage and I'd try it before you do this incase you react badly to it.
Ginger is a classic against nausea including for motion sickness- commonly sold in pharmacies in Europe for this reason. Also I suggest looking up some acupressure points for motion sickness- they help a lot
As someone who suffers from motion sickness in a car, train, plane, boat, I was reluctant to start my flying journey. First 4-5 flights were horrible and it ruined my whole day afterwards the amount of sickness i encountered. Drenched in sweat and ready to barf in the air. I read here that ginger was going to be my best friend. I bought the ginger pills and ginger candy to suck on and even got a ginger shot before learning power on and off stalls. What a lifesaver. Truly thankful for Ginger, it’s given me a whole new life to be honest lol, i love flying and i can’t thank the person enough who recommended it.
Ginger is great for this. Fun fact: the non-drowsy version of Dramamine is basically just ginger.
Incredible.... I wish I had knows this earlier in life, wouldve saved me on surf trips around the world.
I suffer from motion sickness too and was surprised by how effective the non-drowsy Dramamine ginger candies were
Yup. It's just ginger extract. 40 hours and I'm still taking them, kind of scared to test out a flight without taking them lol.
I tell all my students to get a bottle of ginger capsules. It was the secret for me getting through airsickness
Glad you're doing better! You are likely building up tolerance, too. I also got airsick when I started (though not as bad as what you've described). It slowly diminished over time until it vanished completely.
Me and my Russian CFII would chop down the crystallized ginger during approaches
“got a ginger shot…” I hope that was something you drank not an injection!
