What Redditors are Saying

Best Running Shoes for Wide Feet

TL;DR

  • New Balance: Offers a wide range of models in wide and extra-wide options, including the RC Elite v2 [1:2], [3:5].
  • Brooks: Known for good wide-fitting shoes [1:4].
  • Hoka: Provides wide fit options [1:1].
  • Topo Athletic: Known for a wide toe box and zero drop options [5:6].

Popular Brands for Wide Feet

New Balance is frequently recommended for individuals with wide feet due to their extensive range of wide and extra-wide shoe options. They offer many models, including some carbon-plated racers like the RC Elite v2, which are available in wide sizes [1:2]. Brooks is another brand that offers reliable wide-fitting shoes, making them a popular choice among runners with wider feet [1:4]. Hoka also provides wide fit options, although they may not be as extensive as New Balance [1:1].

Specific Models and Features

Several specific models stand out for wide feet. The ASICS Gel Nimbus 26 has been noted for its availability in extra-wide sizes, though options can be limited depending on the region [3:1]. The Saucony Guide 18 and Asics GT 2000 13 were mentioned as lighter stability shoes available in wide sizes, offering more versatility compared to chunkier models like the Kayano [4:1]. Additionally, the Altra Torin 5 comes in a 2E width, but users have reported durability issues with the shoe ripping at the widest part [5:1].

Toe Box Considerations

For those whose primary issue is a cramped toe box rather than overall foot width, Topo Athletic shoes are highly recommended. These shoes are known for having a wide toe box that allows for ample toe splay, which can alleviate discomfort without needing an overall wide shoe [5:6]. This makes them a great option for runners who experience issues primarily in the forefoot area.

Alternative Solutions

If traditional brands don't meet your needs, consider exploring lesser-known brands or specialty stores. For example, Strike Movement offers lightweight wide shoes [5:5]. Additionally, if you're open to trying different lacing techniques or upsizing slightly, you might find more flexibility in regular-width shoes [3:1]. It's always beneficial to visit a local running store to try on various models and get a professional fitting to ensure the best possible comfort and performance.

ORIGINAL POST

So I'm a (kinda) new runner and my only shoes are pegs 38 but if I run anything longer than 4k I get blisters on the side of my feet and in between toes. I was thinking about Asics Novablast 2 but I don't know if they would help me more. Any suggestions on running shoes that are not very expensive and good for wide feet? Also I'm 15, 185cm, 72kg and size 45(EU)/size 11(US)/size 10(UK) if it matters

New Balance is your friend. Nearly all of their models have a wide option and a few are even available in extra wide.

They even have a carbon plated racer, the RC Elite v2, available in wide as long as you’re ok with the NY Marathon colorway.

Nike is usually not great for wide offerings. Check out New Balance - they offer most of their shoes in wide and some even in extra-wide. The specific model you need could be determined with a fitting at your local running store.

Nike are notorious for narrow shoes. I have borderline wide feet and can't even get them into Nike shoes. If you can get into Nike, but it's a little tight, you might have success with lots of other shoes in a regular width. Your best bet would be to find a nearby store and try some on, since different companies use different shaped lasts, and trying a few on allows you to see what works for your foot. I wouldn't jump to thinking you need wide just yet.

From my own experience you need wide less tapered shoes. The ones that came to my mind are hurricane 24, nb 880v14, ultraboost 5, hoka gaviota 5 since they are less tapered. Idk how wide is your feet but these are already slightly wider compared to normal shoes. And i think 880 and gaviota has wide version too even tho they are already wide in normal size but 880v14 and ultraboost 5 has medium stack which is lower compared to stacked shoes in the market in general iirc.

Running shoes for wide feet

Posted by mykittenisacunt · in r/indianrunners · 15 days ago

Hi fellow runners,

My feet are pretty wide, starting from the mid section till the toebox. I have always struggled finding good shoes for myself (both running and otherwise). There are so few options, it’s frustrating.

I currently use a pair of ASICS Gel Nimbus 26 (extra wide ones which I got from ASICS store).

The problem is - for extra wide size, the options are too few in India and discounts are non existent.

I was also planning to order a regular shoe (asics or brooks) as a training pair for my easy runs and see if a different lacing technique would help.

How do you guys deal with this?

I think people with wide feet are a minority in this sub hence, the lack engagement on similar posts:( I am also facing the same issue and as a woman, the options are even more limited(more like non-existent!). I saw some wide options on desertcart.in but possible custom duties/extra charges kept me from making any purchases. I know it's not the most convenient option, but my advice would be to ask friends or relatives traveling abroad to help you purchase shoes. I hope others have better suggestions.

Thanks for the response. I hope these brands start selling their wider shoe options in India one day. You can check out ASICS stores - I’ve seen they keep a couple of wide shoe options in stock (not sure if they do for women shoes though).

a lot of stores abroad have wider options but usually I am forced to upsize and then use the runners knot to avoid heel slippage, Novablast was decent for me, Nimbus yes has been too narrow, the new Vomero seems to be forgiving for wider feet too

Wide Feet looking for options that aren’t just the typical suggestions.

Posted by sbdbd- · in r/AskRunningShoeGeeks · 5 months ago

Hi! I’m a regular runner averaging around 45 miles per week. I ran my first marathon in the fall with another coming up late spring. I have wider feet and struggle finding shoes that work for me. I’ve run in ASICS Gel Kayanos since I was in high school and they’ve mostly worked. For my first marathon I ran in brooks Adrenaline GTS 23s. For a recent half marathon I ran in Mount to Coast R1s. I’m at the point where I need to replace shoes and feel like I’m missing out by just ordering replacements of what has worked. Whenever I look for options, including the FAQ in this sub, it just suggests the same wide feet options that aren’t great for speed or racing. Any recommendations for what I could consider or try? I’m looking for that right balance of shoes for training, workouts, and racing.

Unfortunately, there aren't too many options on the market for a fast and wide stability shoe. The Asics GT 2000 13 is a lighter stability shoe that is available in wide. They're lighter, faster, and way more versatile than the chunky Kayano. The cushioning is superior to the Adrenaline's firm ride. You can also check out Saucony Guide 18. I've run in each and the GTs are my favorite. Have you considered trying stable neutral shoes? That would give you more options.

Widest running shoe?

Posted by DeepArseThoughts · in r/running · 3 years ago

So I have extremely wide feet. To the point I've ripped every pair of soccer cleats or running shoes I've ever owned all at the same spot and can't find a pair of ski boots that don't make my feet go numb due to being too narrow - anyway my shoes always rip outside of the foot at widest part of the foot/shoe, just below the toe box. The best/widest shoe I've found for me is the Altra Torin 5 which comes in 2E, but even that shoe rips at same spot after about 200 miles, which is just over a month of running for me right now. I've tried others like the Hoka Clifton 7 but even that shoe which comes in 2E is uncomfortably narrow for me. I've only been running since July but am starting to put in a lot of mileage and replacing the Torin 5 every 40 days is getting expensive. I do prefer zero drop or close to zero drop shoes that are lightweight as a priority as well. Anyone with super wide feet have success with any lesser known or less expensive shoes?

They make 4E shoes. I've been running on 4E Asics Kayanos since March. They're harder to get, so you're more likely to be spending in the $100-150 range, but they're a joy to run in once you break them in.

I used to buy wide shoes, but they were a bit loose around the back half of my foot. My feet are not crazy wide across the heel or even the metatarsal pad, the problem is more that my toes don't taper down as much as most people's. In the standard shoe shape, my two outer toes get cramped, sore, and/or blistered, but topos specifically have more space for those outer toes. If you don't need the extra width through the heel, I'd definitely recommend them. (If you're in the US, REI carries them and has a really forgiving return policy for shoes.)

They make 880 New Balance in a 4E too. Also, go find a good bootfitter for your ski boots. It'll change your skiing life. They can do amazing things with reshaping shells.

Me-meep · 3 years ago

Do you recommend doing ski boots on the soopes so you can go back and get them adjusted? I’m always conscious I’ll burn up ski time, but buying them back home before I go seems silly as I think ppl in ski resorts must be more skilled at fitting since they do it all the time.

1 upvotes on reddit
S
superslomo · 3 years ago

I live out in the sticks and we ski locally... I never really do longer trips to any given place. Once you get them fitted properly by someone good at it, you should be pretty happy, but depending on your needs figure out where you'll find something good. We're near enough to the Catskills that going up to see The Guy up there is a manageable errand every year or two. If you're in Houston, though, or somewhere without any snow, it's a different matter. :)

It’s very frustrating not being able to get the shoes I want because nothing comes wide enough. I’ve just gotten into running and wanted to see if anyone has good running shoes for wide feet. I like Topo Athletic running shoes. My feet are a 2E and I have plenty of room in the men’s Atoms wide (I could probably get the regular width). The wider toe box really makes a difference for me, comfort-wise. I can wear a 2E in NB and Saucony but the tapered toe box makes them painful over time.

I agree with both points, but as mentioned below Altra are zero drop and most people have to slowly ease into that. If you actually need a wide size New Balance seems to be the best for having multiple widths available for most of their shoes. I suspect they may not keep much stock in store though.

Seeking recommendations for running shoes for flat and wide feet

Posted by Zrakk · in r/RunningShoeGeeks · 2 years ago

Hi everyone!

I'm seeking some advice on finding the perfect pair of running shoes for competitions that cater to both flat and wide feet. I've already tried out the Nike React (for long runs and threshold workouts), Nike Vaporfly Next% 2 (for races and VO2 max training), and Asics Noosa Tri (for long runs and threshold workouts) models. As a triathlete, I'd appreciate any recommendations that can offer great support during my runs while accommodating my flat feet. So far, the Asics Noosa Tri seems to be the best fit, as it provides substantial support for almost the entire foot. On the other hand, while the Nike Vaporfly boosts my speed, I can't help but notice that around 20-30% of the inner part of my foot hangs outside the shoe's sole, which looks quite funny! Any suggestions on other shoe models that might be more suitable for my feet and triathlon endeavors would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you've already tried the Asics Noosa Tri, then the best two alternatives that I could think of is either the Brooks Dyad 11 or the New Balance 990v5. They both support my flat and wide feet really well, super comfy, supportive, good cushioning, and stable/strong enough for a long running/jogging session. I've worn the Brooks Dyad 11 for both training and very long triathlons, and they've not failed me yet. Either way, can't go wrong!

HELP: I can't find running shoes that fit!

Posted by Prior_Finish_1161 · in r/AskRunningShoeGeeks · 5 months ago

My foot measurements: https://my.volumental.com/en/fleet_feet_rics/8fc51e71-7e1a-4d81-a9d3-e1007c685b16/?utm_medium=myvemail

I am so frustrated. I have wide feet (2E) and high arches. My ball width and girth and instep girth are off the charts. My running shoes are destroying my feet. After my latest run my feet had such terrible blisters that I could barely walk for two days. I have used Altra Torin 7s which received holes in the heel far too quickly. I recently tried the Torin 8s and found them to be too tight in the midsole. I had the Brooks Ghost Max in wide and had to return them because they gave me terrible blisters. I've tried the new Nike Vomero 18s because they were supposedly wide foot friendly but they didn't work out either. I have had some luck with Adidas Ultraboost Lights on the treadmill but they ripped my feet up when I ran with them outside. I LOVE running and I don't want to give it up. But I need a wide midsole and a wide toe box. My next hope is to try the ASICS Novablast 5s or New Balance in wide. It feels like every shoe I put on my foot is busting out of the side and I have the blisters and callouses to prove it.

They have shoes in 6E which would likely fit you but they are stability shoes and on the clunky side.

Cushioned shoes for wide feet, getting back into running for first time since high school?

Ran cross country in high school (was not fast by any means) and stopped running for the most part throughout college. Was looking at getting back into running 3-4 days a week, mostly mid-distance runs. Any recommendations for pretty well-cushioned shoes that are suitable for wider feet? Also, don’t know if weight matters much for shoe choice, but if it does, I weigh around 200 lbs.

Agreed, my first max cushion shoe and I love it. Helps me slow down and not want to go fast but also feels good in terms of energy return and makes me not feel like I'm plodding along like some max cushion shoes. Also probably a good shoe for heavier runners because the outsole is super durable.

best running shoes for wide feet

Key Considerations for Running Shoes for Wide Feet:

  1. Width Options: Look for brands that offer wide (D or 2E) and extra-wide (4E) options. This ensures a better fit and comfort during runs.

  2. Arch Support: Choose shoes that provide adequate arch support, especially if you have flat or high arches. This can help prevent injuries and improve comfort.

  3. Cushioning: Opt for shoes with good cushioning to absorb impact and provide comfort, especially for longer runs.

  4. Breathability: Look for materials that allow for good airflow to keep your feet cool and dry during runs.

  5. Stability Features: If you overpronate (your foot rolls inward), consider stability shoes that offer support to help maintain proper alignment.

Recommendations:

  • New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v11: Known for its plush cushioning and wide fit options, this shoe is great for long-distance running.

  • Brooks Ghost 14: Offers a roomy toe box and excellent cushioning, making it a favorite among runners with wide feet.

  • ASICS Gel-Kayano 28: Provides stability and support, ideal for overpronators, with a comfortable fit for wider feet.

  • Saucony Triumph 19: Features a soft, cushioned ride and is available in wide sizes, making it suitable for long runs.

Choosing the right running shoe is crucial for comfort and performance, so it's always a good idea to try them on and take them for a test run if possible.
