TL;DR For the best smart watch, consider factors like battery life, compatibility with fitness apps, and specific features you need. The Samsung Watch 5 Pro is highly recommended for its excellent battery life [5:7].
Battery Life Considerations
Battery life is a significant consideration when choosing a smart watch. Many users express frustration with watches that require daily charging, such as the Apple Watch [3]. Some alternatives offer longer battery life, such as non-Wear OS smartwatches, which can last up to 10 days
[5:4]. The Samsung Watch 5 Pro has been praised for its impressive battery life compared to other models
[5:7].
Compatibility with Fitness Apps
If you're interested in using your smartwatch for fitness tracking, compatibility with apps like Athlytic is crucial. Users have discussed the importance of syncing health data, particularly HRV data, with Apple Health or Google Fit [3:2]
[3:6]. The Amazfit Helio Strap was mentioned as an option but lacks HRV data sync
[3:1].
Water Resistance and Durability
For those who plan to use their smartwatch during activities like swimming, water resistance is essential. It's important to note that some warranties do not cover water damage, so additional protection plans may be necessary [5:8].
User Experience and Charging Habits
Many users find daily charging manageable by integrating it into their routine, such as charging while showering or having breakfast [5:11]
[5:12]. However, others prefer watches with longer battery life to avoid frequent charging
[5:6].
Recommendations Beyond the Discussions
Consider your priorities—whether it's battery life, app compatibility, or specific features like water resistance—when selecting a smartwatch. If battery life is your top concern, models like the Samsung Watch 5 Pro or non-Wear OS options might be ideal. For fitness enthusiasts, ensure the watch supports your preferred apps and metrics.

Not sure why people are saying you have to mail it in. Unless it’s different for the watches than for a phone, the Samsung store takes trades. I ordered a phone online, opted to pick up at the closest Samsung “experience” store and they took my trade in phone after transferring my data to my new phone.
But I don't think you have to do it at the same time. And I wouldn't. I don't like using the smart tamer because it messes up a couple of apps and makes them think my new devious is the exact same as the old one. I do it on my own.
No, the store and online are ran like two separate companies.
No, not true. I did exactly what OP is doing with a phone. The Samsung store took my trade in phone. I sat there with them to transfer my data and they took it to ship to corporate. What made you think this? Unless watches are different than phones, but that doesn’t seem likely
Unless things have changed since I last tried a couple years ago. My Samsung corporate store told me exactly what I mentioned. That was for any device. If you did the trade in via online then you had to mail it in to Samsung online center. Or you could buy from the store and trade in with them but online offers much better deals than in store. Like I said tho I'm basing this off my experience from a couple years ago.
But I will say if they did really make this change, that's awesome. Even the store I was at didn't agree with how Samsung did things between the store and online. So maybe they're finally getting better.
I've picked up both phones and watches (at Best Buy) and didn't have to do the transfer right then and turn it in. I think they would give you a choice. You can just let them know that you're not ready to that yet.
No, you have 7 (or 10?) days to mail it in with the label Samsung provides. You might have to print it from their website. Be sure to read the details of your trade- in to find out how much time you have and how to return it. Be sure to sign out of Google and Samsung accounts and reset to factory specs or they will deny the trade.
you will have to send it back. pack it carefully - put it in a zip lock bag, then wrap it in bubble wrap, and follow ALL instructions they email you for returning it.
No, the store is literally just acting like your mailbox.
For a franchise show this is really incredible, let alone a STAR WARS SHOW. I’m glad they got at least one win on the main broadcast too. We are really so fortunate to have gotten such an incredible production made by such passionate and outstanding creatives. I would be shocked if we see a Star Wars show even be nominated for an Outstanding Writing Emmy ever again. I’m rooting for that day and I hope Lucasfilm takes the right lessons from Andor.
Honestly in a lot of other Emmy seasons Andor would have won Best Drama. But going up against The Pitt and Severance? This Emmy's was a murderer's row.
Agree, I would’ve only been disappointed if Andor walked away with 0 wins during the main show since I think it deserves at least some recognition. Otherwise all the winners were absolutely deserved. The Pitt came out of nowhere and stole the year, I’m happy that Noah Wyle essentially got a lifetime achievement award and won for the show he helped write & produce.
Well, I suppose I can only hope that Andor leaves a lasting legacy on the creatives.
It may have not done absolutely amazing numbers, but the show is definitely going to have a very positive long-term effect on the franchise, and I think that's very important moving forward.
Very glad that the show won some well-deserved awards. I was slightly afraid this show was going to get the Better Call Saul treatment from the Emmys.
try watching it first. it has every reason to be recognized as exceptional, just like Andor.
Curious how’d you find your way into this thread as a non SW fan?
Pretty solid haul for a show that didn’t have a ton of crossover appeal in the mainstream and was going up against the phenomenon that is The Pitt (which is another outstanding show, hard to be upset about any award Andor lost to it).
I’m not disparaging Star Wars. Ive been a fan for essentially my entire life, so I know the average quality of the franchise and how great of an exception Andor is. I also know what these industry organizations tend to nominate, and it’s usually not installments in long running franchises like Star Wars. I like the MCU too, but I don’t expect any of those movies or shows to win awards outside of a tech category here and there let alone awards for writing. All I meant was to celebrate Andor as an achievement, and hope Lucasfilm allows skilled creatives play in the universe with similar freedom to what Gilroy & co got to do with this show.
I’m glad that Andor stood and found success on its own two feet instead of needing cameos from other well known characters like obi-wan, Ahsoka, Darth Vader and so on. It shows the power of good story telling and well written characters. If it were other star wars projects you know a well known character will just show up like how the mandalorian took over part of boba’s fett’s show.
Maybe a hot take, but I don't really like live-action Ahsoka. I feel like she gets duller as a character the more we get from her in the live action.
I honestly think she peaked in The Clone Wars Mandalore Arc and Tales of the Jedi and it's been downhill ever since.
If you asked me 5 years ago if a show about Cassian Andor was a good idea, I would've laughed at you. If you told me that it would one day be my favorite out of all star wars shows I'd be rolling on the floor laughing and think you needed a psychiatrist.
Well here I am, firmly claiming that a show about Cassian fucking Andor is up there with the best shows of all time such as the Wire, Breaking Bad, and Deadwood. It's unreal, and I love it.
I enjoy the space wizards as much as anyone, but I also enjoy stories of the rest of the universe. The average guy as well as the exceptional hero.
So, over the last couple of days I have fallen in love with Athlytic - it is the perfect balance of nerd and simple for my taste, and it gives me just enough insights to keep me motivated on my fitness journey. I have also, over the past couple of years, slowly fallen out of love with the Apple watch. I still like the hardware, but a bit of variety on my wrist would be nice, plus not having to charge the damn thing every day would be a bonus.
I would, in short, love to go back to wearing a (preferably) screen-less fitness band and a mechanical watch, but would also settle for a third party watch (e.g. Garmin) with a longer battery life.
My question to you guys in this subreddit is the following: which fitness bands and/or watches do you know of, that would sync all relevant data to Apple Health that would still let me take advantage of Athlytic? Specifically HRV, resting HR, wrist temp, SpO2, respiration rate, sleep (time is OK, cycles would be brilliant). Also doable are third party sync solutions, if those can also work.
Suggestions and experiences welcome and appreciated!
P.S. I know this is not directly related to Athlytic, but my focus here is to get an alternative hardware that would let me keep using Athlytic
Amazfit Helio strap
I considered that, but I have heard that it doesnt sync HRV data, which is the fundamental metric Athlytic uses. Do you have experience otherwise?
Apparently it syncs on the latest beta
Sorry I don’t know
I have this equipment too. It is ridiculously cheap. My only issue is that I would like to be able to see sleep scores on a monthly calendar view just like Athlytic.
Also curious to know if and when Helio Strap will push HRV data to apple health. Essentially that’s the key. Athlytic pulls what it can from Apple.
Bro I got so excited at that thread! And then one of the staff commented on it and watered down my enthusiasm
You and me both buddy. I mean, I get it that the manufacturers want to keep people on their ecosystems, but as an end user, having your entire data in one platform (whether Apple health or Google fit) just makes sense. Makes it easier to switch hardware without losing data, and this is even one of the areas where Apple even ALLOWS this integration and manufacturers still only use the bare minimum
I found a smart watch on the sidewalk yesterday at around 6:30pm yesterday. I have no idea if it’s an Apple Watch or some other brand of smart watch (look, I still have an iPhone 8, so I’m very out of the loop tech-wise). It’s either out of battery or dead because it’s not on and won’t turn on. I walked to a police station close by and they advised that it’d be best if I try to find the owner because if it’s left with their lost and found, it’ll just sit there forever. However, I don’t have a wireless charger to even see if i can get it working and find any useful info on the owner. So my question is twofold: where is the best place to post lost and found items for Chicago (found in Ravenswood, if that matters for this question), and does anyone have a wireless charger I could borrow to try to glean any owner info? I’d really like to be able to return it, and I also don’t want to just hand it over to someone who claims it’s theirs but it isn’t.
If you are a really nice person, you could take it to an Apple Store and they would probably be able to identify it
And OP, if you’re not sure what type of watch it is, maybe post a pic to the r/whatisit subreddit so people can confirm?
(Before going to an Apple Store, which I agree would be very nice)
Ah, smart. Yeah, I’ll try posting a photo of it there first to see if I can get an ID on the brand. Thanks for the suggestion
Good idea. I’ll try to take it in to a store soon
I world have asked at the station if they had a compatible charger in the Lost & Found. Lol
You're a good person for even attempting to find the owner.
If you have a phone with wireless charging, you MIGHT be able to use your phone to charge the watch.
I don’t unfortunately. I have a lowly iPhone 8. I can’t even update it anymore 😅
If they don’t pay for the cell service on it, it’s going to be pretty difficult to find them when it’s not paired to their phone. If you’re determined to find the owner I think some signs around the area would be most effective.
Go to a Starbucks with wireless charging pads on the tables.
Oh! I didn’t know that was a thing. Thanks, I’ll try to find one
I’ve seen them in a few. Or did when I occasionally went to Starbucks pre-pandemic.
I just bought this this moment, i'm planning to use 1 of this for a long time now. Can't wait to charge it everyday like a phone lol.
Any tips or review you guys can give me beforehand? I'll apreciate it.
I don't understand why you guys are so obsessed with the battery duration.
I just bought mine. It lasts more than a day with everything on.
I just wake up and put it to charge while I take my coffee , release the kraken and shower.
Why having an awesome technological device if you are not going to make use of it?
It's not like we don't have access to chargers basically 24/7.
This is just my opinion though.
I came from the Watch5 Pro. The battery life wouldn't be a problem if I was actually hitting 30 hours. My watch dies midday because I guess the health features are taxing. My AOD is never activated. It's annoying because I can't seem to get any consistency out of it.
Edit: I lied AOD was on. But I did drop the brightness.
I did notice the W5P having much better battery life than the W6C. 3-4 days vs 1-2 days.
Anyways, I'm getting into "oldschool" watches again. Having to charge my watch every other day becomes kinda annoying, especially when leaving it in the bathroom because that's where I put my clothes off for the night, and then forget I need to charge it.
The watch 5 pro is an absolute unit when it comes to battery life. I find no reason to upgrade.
On a 100% full charge I get exactly 3 hours and 4 minutes of Running logged with GPS, heart monitor and playing music from watch to wireless headphones ( no phone on runs) before battery dies.
I'd consider that making use of the watch and its battery sucks. Repeated this several times and get same battery life btw.
Hm. Are you sure you don't have a faulty watch? This is my first smartwatch, but your battery duration seems excessively low
If you started with 30€ to 80€ non-wear os smartwatches like I did, it takes some time to accept a 24h (or slightly more) battery duration.
Non-wear os smartwatches realistically last 7 to 10 days depending on the model, so you can charge it just twice a week if you don't want to drain the battery too much. This is very convenient. Whereas with a wear os smartwatch you literally have to treat it like a 2nd phone.
I'm now also happy with the duration of my GW7, but it takes some time to get used to the battery.
My 2 cents, as someone that swapped my W6 Classic to a OnePlus Watch 3.
Battery life could be better. There's no two ways about it anymore. I got my watch on Saturday, charged it up and got to 10% this morning (Thursday ). With everything on (AOD, HR, Oxygen, etc)... After hitting 10%, it switches to the 2nd chip, which is basically a "Fitbit-like" OS. And I could spend another week there, with no major lost in features.
My point is, yes, charging is not a big deal, but not demanding better devices from the leading brands is a disservice for you as a customer. They could easily implement the dual chip model or increase the battery size. It is not like 47mm is slim by any measurements 😂
Completely agree. I usually charge my Watch 7 when I'm taking a shower, sitting down for an extended time period (i.e. gaming) or just don't wanna wear it
Welcome, hope you enjoy it!
Samsung's warranty doesn't cover water damage. If you want to swim with it, then get Samsung plus. Just in case the waterproofing doesn't work. I lost my gw7 to this.
I charge my galaxy watch 6 classic 43 mm every three days because I can because I don't use all the features while paying in stores and using aod.
Never bothered me charging everyday. I get up in the morning and leave it charging for 30minutes whilst i get breakfast together.
This is enough everyday. Same for my phone.
When, during a typical day, do smartwatch wearers charge their watch?
I have a 9:00 meeting everyday that I charge my watch during when I sit at my desk I take it off and charge it. when the meeting is over I put it back on.
I charge mine when I take a shower
And give up your Watch’s ability to assess your Squeaky Clean score with its Shower Sensor?
I have a Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra and it's really not hard. It only uses like 10% battery during sleep tracking. So I go to bed at 100% battery, wake up it's at 90%. Charge it while I shower and get dressed, it's usually at like 95-98% by the time I'm finished.
Around 9ish it night it'll be at 70%. I could go another night/day easy but I'll just throw it on the charger while I'm on my computer for half an hour until it's at 100% again. Then rinse and repeat.
I have an Ultra 2. I charge it every few days when I’m at my desk or just not using it. I don’t notice the weight when I’m sleeping. But that’s anecdotal YMMV. I had my concerns when I moved up in Watch, but they didn’t last.
I got an ultra 2 and I don’t even wear it all day cause it’s so thicc and heavy. I got small and sensitive wrists from bouldering so I only wear it when I run.
Charge it every day when you are taking a shower or whatever in the morning half an hour a day and you are good for a long time
Bold of you to assume Redditors shower.
Before I switched to a Garmin I used to charge my Apple Watch in the car on the way to work.
It’s nice only having to charge once a week at the absolute maximum now.
Sleep quality and hypertension alerts are coming as software updates to older watches as well they said.
I usually charge mine when I take a shower. Or, if I'm at my desk at work and it's running low I'll usually charge it for 20 or 30 minutes.
Hasn't sleep quality monitoring been around for a long time? It's been included in FitBit for years.
Daft question because I seen good feed back here, I recently bought the Samsung galaxy watch 7 and the battery life is bugging the life out of my, how is this battery worse the 46mm which is many 5 watches previous if not more, I've seen the gt4 for £130 brand new, I'm a painter and decorator so no matter the watch it always gets covered in paint and dust etc so I much as Id love a expensive watch the gt4 seems to fit the bill for me, I am right in thinking I'm not going to regret it if I buy it? Thanks guys
Do you need Google apps and/or NFC (contactless)?
Because none of that is supported on Huawei watches.
If not, then it's a fantastic watch with excellent health metrics.
I get 16 days battery life with a power level 1 watch face and normal usage.
Literally only used my watch for seeing who's called me and texts, email and WhatsApp, and tracking workouts that's it.
Been using the GT4 for almost 2 years now . Still amazed how long it can last on a single charge
Brilliant thank you
Probably wait till the 19th since the GT6 will be launching so you could get the GT5 if that sees a price drop
The gt4 going for 100 pound on curry's and argos and Huawei direct Absolute steal I've had mine for 18months...no complaints I got the gt5 but sold it off cause they very similar.... I'm. Thinking I'll get the gt6... If this one ever packs up Loving it
Yeah I don't know whether to wait to see if the gt5 comes down in price this morning with the GT6 getting released
Personally I would get the gt4... For 130 it's a steal.... Then wait 5 months and flip it
I picked up the gt4 today, still getting used to it, but overall seems impressive, just wanted to say thank you for everyone advice
I've had mine for just a fortnight and best watch I've ever owned. My battery lasts over a week. I'll never buy a Samsung watch ever again after bad experiences a few years ago.
Brilliant thank you
What smartwatch you guys use with your phone? do you think it's actually worth the money you paid for?
I'm wondering which one to buy, want something with accurrate heart rate tracking, apps notifs, calls and messages. Other features would be nice.
What do you want to recommend?
Pixel Watch 3. The best smartwatch I've used by far. I've had Moto 360, Fossil Gen 3 and Gen 6, Galaxy Watch 4, Garmin Venu 2.
PW3 has real-time heart rate tracking, which is very important for me. Sleep tracking and other activities tracking is very very accurate. Battery life lasts 30 hours or so with all the bells and whistles turned on. I charge it once a day while I'm in the shower and that's good enough.
Me too!!@@@👍👍👍👍👍
Oneplus watch 3 is the best ive had so far
Pixel watches have better HR sensor than GW. And Pixel watch 4 is going to be a very good watch. If you are fine with it's aesthetic, I would suggest it.
Galaxy watch 6 classic
I purchased a GW6 and my wife purchased a PW2.. I am amazed how many more settings the Galaxy Watch has over the Pixel Watch.. for example, you can turn on/off always-on heart rate monitoring in GW, but not the PW. Don't know why Google hides some settings like this but Samsung seems to have lots MORE settings. If you're a power user, I'd definitely recommend GW.
So far, OnePlus Watch 3. Better than my Fossil Gen 6 in every way
I had a Gen 6 too and went Pixel 3, it's also miles better.
OnePlus and Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra seem to be recommended a lot on google, for those having used one, how's your experience with it? Are you happy with it? Or do you have any other recs?
I truly want to know your sharing to make a purchase. TIA!
I love my Tic Watch Pro 5.
does it have good battery life?
Ticwatch Pro 5 Enduro. 3 days too. Link to my other comment below.
I'm using a Pixel Watch 2 with a Pixel 7 Pro phone. Love it, although I almost immediately had to ditch the included sport band because the tail was digging into my wrist; Spiegen makes a great stretchy band that I'm currently using.
Happy to answer any specific questions you have.
Thanks for the band recommendation. I like the stock one but I was wondering what to replace it with when I'll want to swap.
I appreciate that it has an adjustment for how tight the band should be. It does loosen a bit over time, but super easy to tighten back up to your preference before slipping it on.
What are you looking for in a Smartwatch?
If you don't need all the bells and whistles of a Samsung Galaxy Watch, maybe look into Pebble?
They're releasing new models, Pebble 2 Duo, in a few weeks.
It's a Samsung Galaxy 5. I've had it for a few years now.
Love my Samsung! I can choose to highlight using as many or as few apps that I'd like. It's so easy to use.
I have had multiple premium smart watches, most of them were Fossil brand. However the one I am MOST happy with is just my LIGE smart watch I bought for under $70 AUD from Amazon. All I want is a decent watch face, good battery life and notifications coming up on my watch. Maybe the ability to control music as well. That is pretty much it. The LIGE does all of that, and even includes some basic health sensors. Battery lasts for 4 or 5 days on my usage.
And at the price I will just buy another one if it dies.
I don't really care for answering callls, messages or anything at all. All I want is:
-tells me the time -tracks my step accurately -'decent' enough job at tracking my exercise and calories burnt.
Thoughts? Heard about the Withings but keep hearing bad things about it, mostly quality control. So not sure. I got an old Apple Watch already but it hardly lasts half a day now.
AmazFit Balance 2 ticks all of those boxes.
Edit - as pretty much all of their other watches.
Depends on what health metrics you really want to track. Garmin are kind of the gold standard for sensors and all-day tracking. Apple is not far off from a sensor-hardware standpoint (in fact, they are kind of ahead), but something about their software and interpretations of sensor readings is kind of garbage....and battery life sucks.
I have the Forerunner 955 for a host of reasons - always-on display (much easier to see in the sun than newer LEDs), hella long battery life, mapping/directions (downloadable), music storage, great HR monitor, excellent sleep tracking. Also, the weather and sunset/sunrise functions are nice. I do not use it for calls or messages at all.
Bought mine during a sale for around $320 and have not regretted it one bit.
If price isn't an issue check the Garmin line. They have watches for runners, climbers, n daily life. I'm not a runner but I got the forerunner since it matched well with my life style. Just pick the one that u like the most based on its features. Battery life is from 7 days to 15 depending on the watch n use. If price is an issue get the lower end ones, less feats but still very nice battery life
Look into GARMIN. Desfit and DCRainmaker have a ton of reviews and in-depth guides and them. Plenty to choose from and all have CRAZY battery life.
garmin instinct 2/3 solar - very very long battery, good health metrics and very good tracking capabilities. Con - looks a bit like a casio g-shock.
best smart watch
