What Redditors are Saying

Best Socks for Skating

TL;DR

  • Skatersocks: Highly praised for comfort and thickness [2:3], [4:3].
  • Bombas: Known for durability and comfort, with a variety of styles [3:3], [4:5].
  • FP Painkillers Skate Socks: Designed specifically for skaters with padding and moisture-wicking properties [5:2].

Popular Sock Brands

  1. Skatersocks: These are frequently recommended for their comfort and ability to stay up without being too thick or itchy. They come in various lengths, including mid-calf and thigh-high options, which many users find appealing for both style and functionality [2:3], [4:3].

  2. Bombas: This brand is noted for its quality and comfort, with several users mentioning them as their favorite skating socks. Bombas offers a wide range of styles, including fun patterns like their pride collection, and they donate a pair of socks for each one purchased [3:3], [4:5].

  3. Socco: Known for being padded and providing good cushioning, Socco socks are another popular choice among skaters. They are often compared favorably to Skatersocks and are appreciated for their durability [5:1].

Specialty Socks

  1. FP Painkillers Skate Socks: Specifically designed for skaters, these socks offer light padding around the heels and balls of the feet and are made from moisture-wicking bamboo charcoal material. They are highly recommended for long skate sessions due to their comfort and anti-odor properties [5:2].

  2. SmartWool Hiking Socks: Although not specifically for skating, these socks are appreciated for their light cushioning and odor resistance, making them a good option for those who prefer thicker socks [5:4].

General Recommendations

For those who prefer thinner socks, options like Ovation Zocks and Mondor knee highs are suggested. These provide a closer feel to skating barefoot while offering some protection and comfort [1:1], [1:2]. Regular cotton socks can also work well if you are looking for an inexpensive and straightforward solution [1:3].

Ultimately, the best sock will depend on personal preferences regarding thickness, length, and material. Trying out different brands and styles can help determine what works best for your skating needs.

I normally skate barefoot but I want to try wearing socks again so does anyone have any recommendations? I find tights to be a bit slippy

I like the Mondor knee highs. Not too slick nor too grippy.

They extremely similar to their tights so easy change over.

I usually wear the knee highs unless they are all in the wash.

I just wear regular cotton socks. Not too thick or fuzzy. That works just fine for me but maybe someone else has special socks they recommend? I would try a few different kinds of socks to see what you like best.

I always skated in knee high nylons. The kind they sell in packs of 10 pairs for like 3 dollars. They were as close to skating barefoot as you can get. Especially when they end up with a bunch of holes haha.

I just wear kinda thin socks, like the ones that come in packs at Target for like $6 (usually have cute designs on them like seals or wolves or stripes lol)

I usually wear Ovation Zocks! They're super thin like nylons but they hold up forever & you can get them in wacky prints.

What socks do y'all usually wear for skating?

Posted by MeepsNcheese · in r/Rollerskating · 5 years ago

Title :P I've lived in ankle socks for the past few years, so getting skates and finding good socks that are good for skates has been a journey of "oh my god some cute socks are more expensive/lower quality than I thought". Like man I just wanna rock around in some cute thigh highs that aren't too-too toasty, wear socks that don't roll past my heel and aren't sweat-logged after half an hour @.@ Plus I have tiny feet, so that's just another problem with wanting cute socks in general lol

Any help is much appreciated~! <3

Man, socks are a great question. I've also been looking for good socks.

My current experience has been based two major factors. The first one is thickness. I wanted a thick socks because I CANNOT believe how sweaty my feet get when skating. My skates are always damp after a skate, regardless of how thick my socks are.

I also got an insole for my skates because is have really high arches. This now makes thicker socks more uncomfortable. I find my toes often get tingly when I do thick socks with my insoles. So I've opted for thinner socks.

I will admit that I can get away with thin socks because my skate lining is really comfortable. I have Sure-Grip Fames, and the lining is just amazing.

I did try some knee highs, but I find that I didn't not wear them because I wear my knee pads all the time, and it's just easier to wear crew socks.

Maybe we could start a sock trade club for people who buy packs and want to try different kinds of socks!

i looove love skatersocks. i have two mid calf pairs, one over the knee, and one thigh high for spicy days lol. they are so comfy and thick compared to my regular tall socks.

I'd love to hear more details about skatersocks and their comfort. I'm always hearing that they're the best and see them around all the time, but noticed they look pretty thick.

How are they comfort-wise?
Do they wick away moisture pretty well on a blazing hot day?
Can you skate for over 4 hours in them without blisters/rubbing or any discomfort?

Thanks!!

From my experience, they’re very comfy. Thick / padded up until a little above the ankle and then thin out throughout the rest of the length. They don’t feel like they’re stuck to my feet and have to peel off after skating on a hot day like my regular everyday socks, so I think they’re pretty good about not getting nasty with sweat. I have a problem with my feet hurting from skating for other reasons but it is less so when I wear proper socks like these ones. I’ve skated for about 2 hours most and they weren’t a problem. Plus not very expensive! And no blisters, rubbing (and this is in my smallish beach bunnies)

I like Socco better than Skater Socks - I agree with drumsandfire that they’re too mushy and loose. I also really like the Edea socks, they’re super thin! May have to try some bombas I see them suggested a lot

I recently threw down for a 12 pack of calf length bombas for the same reason, hah -- favorite skating sock I've found so far. I also have a few pairs of Skater Socks that are just okay... I think they're thick in a too-loose way and find they feel kinda "mushy" in my boots. Fun colors though!

I have 1 pair of cherry blossom patterned knee highs I bought from Sock Dreams that I use to skate. I plan on ordering more knee highs in the coming months because wearing regular crew socks to skate is uncomfortable for me (the tongue of my skates rubs against them and makes them sink down into the boot).

I love these socks from Amazon. They are the perfect length so the stripes just peek out above the top of my boots. :) Plus they are inexpensive and durable - I've probably washed them a hundred times and they are no worse for the wear. Link

If you're planning long skate sessions, I’d highly recommend the FP Painkillers Skate Socks. They have light padding sewn in, especially around the heels and balls of your feet, and stay super comfortable even after hours. The Bamboo Charcoal version is also great moisture-wicking and anti-odor, which helps a ton in warmer weather.

They’re made for skaters, not just repurposed sports socks definitely worth checking out!

*if you're looking for good skate sock options, get hiking socks made of wool for great wicking and temperature moderation. I love Darn Tough brand- yes even when it's 100° and 70% humidity. I have seen cute knee high compression socks made with wool, rayon, and other breathable materials. Can't remember the brand but they would prob be a great option as well. Just no to cotton and polyester in booty-sweat summer.

I have tried to like skater socks but I can't stand them here's why': ➡️ They are tube socks and feel like to much material around my ankles. ➡️ They are not made of a fabric that dry well. They always are so damp and sweaty no matter what time of year I wear them.

My foot/ankle are long foot and skinny ankle so maybe that is why. I tried a 14" sock and they are too short. The stripes are at my heel. The 19" length works for me length wise but I feel it's too long for my taste. I have found I like Vans socks. They have cute socks, are super comfortable and don't get all nasty and wet like skater socks. They also have a heel and fit much better.

I really like them. I don’t wear tall socks ever because they’re always too tight on my calves; but the two pair of skater socks I have dont squeeze me! I got the 14 inch size in both pair I have.

I don’t wear them in the summer because I’m a sweaty bitch and I don’t like the extra fabric. I just wear thinner novelty crew socks from Target.

I do have a good stock of I guess what you can call “unisex” socks that are similar to men’s thin socks that come in like a million different cool designs… I was wondering if skater socks were a bit thicker, which might be what I want… also because I feel like it’ll be easier to match just plain white or black with singular color stripes with my different skate colors….

Skate socks come in different densities, the majority are just for aesthetics! I would say if you want to try thicker, just go for any thicker sock. And I agree about matching plain black and white which is why I love my men's crew socks, nice & simple !!

Skating socks? Recommendations, thin

Posted by rs1412_ · in r/FigureSkating · 5 months ago
post image

I usually skate with the ones pictured, but yesterday I forgot to bring a pair with me to the rink. So I skated without any on, it felt odd at first, but I had the best skating day yet. Spins and turns were so much better than even last week. I'm not sure if it was because of skating barefoot... but it feels kind of gross to do that every time. What are your favorite thin skating socks? Even thinner than the ones pictured? Or should I rawdog it forever? 🤔 I'm pretty cautious about buying things online, so please recommend only if you've personally used the product 🙏

Thanks in advance

My partner and her family (hockey and figure skating) swear by Thinees

https://thinees.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoq3MGmatvW1X7ad1nIJYRcegcqK_DoMxX1j1H2yofiubNObu356

They also have these deodorizer things to put in their skates which you’ll want to consider if you continue to skate barefoot.

4 upvotes on reddit
Milamelted · 5 months ago

I think it’s bc these skating socks are so slippery. It’s not that you need a thinner sock, just a less slippery one so that your foot stays in place better. I use the fox river ultra thin sock liners. If you’re anywhere near their size border on their chart size down, they run large imo

5 upvotes on reddit
Brilliant-Sea-2015 · 5 months ago

Some people just skate barefoot and that's OK as long as you have deodorizer inserts and really let your skates air dry after a session.

Your toes shouldn't be freezing at rink temp, your toes are most likely cold because of poor circulation.

I'll echo the comments from others about it likely being a circulation issue and not your socks.

That said, I have these Warroad socks and they're 'okay', but not worth the price IMO. At the 50% Black Friday price they're more reasonable, but at the end of the day they're basic socks really. Minimal compression, the 'grip' they tout is non-existent. They're nothing special. Especially not at nearly $30. For that price I'd start looking into something like Cut Shield.

The bare bones socks I always recommend are Darn Tough ultra lightweight running socks. They're thin and have no padding which is what you should want. They're wool so they regulate temperature well in addition to stink. Lastly, DT's lifetime warranty makes them a no brainer. The last pair I had lasted me 6 years.

best socks for skating

Key Considerations for Skating Socks

  1. Material: Look for moisture-wicking materials like merino wool or synthetic blends. These help keep your feet dry and comfortable by managing sweat.

  2. Thickness: Choose a thickness that fits well with your skates. Thinner socks provide better control and feel, while thicker socks offer more cushioning and warmth.

  3. Fit: Ensure the socks fit snugly without being too tight. A good fit prevents bunching and blisters, which can be common in skating.

  4. Cushioning: Some socks come with extra padding in key areas (heel and toe) for added comfort and protection against impacts.

  5. Height: Consider the height of the sock. Crew-length or knee-high socks can provide additional warmth and protection against skate rub.

Recommendations:

  • Darn Tough Merino Wool Socks: These are durable, moisture-wicking, and offer great cushioning. They also come with a lifetime guarantee, making them a solid investment.
